[Q] The Best Rom For Me? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so most of the features I'd want in the rom would be ALL of the stock features working fine, possibly based on Gingerbread(So I can use Skype with the front-facing camera), but if not, Froyo is still fine, maybe good customization I guess, good battery life, and I wanna be able to use setcpu. Thanks for the help!

If you like stock and want gb then i would have to recommend Generation X gb stock v5. The current most popular rom which is a sense rom is Virtuous Unity. Try both and see how you like them.

RoyalGinger...best ROM hands down.

The best ROM for you, is the one you like. It's really easy for us to tell you what we like on your phone.
I would verify that you have a good eMMC chip and get familiar with Titanium Backup and start flashing ROMs. Cyanogen(mod) is a world leader when it comes to ROMs, but MiUi is starting to creep up that ladder as well. Not to mention we have many EXCELLENT developers here @ XDA.

If you do have a good eMMC chipset YES it's the most fool proof. If you have a bad eMMC chipset it can cause a headache down the road.

But don't I need to permroot to find out if I have a good eMMC? If that is true, then should I just root with Visionary first, find out if I have a good chip, if I do, then unroot, and then root again with gfree instead?

Cyanogenmod 7 and RoyalGinger 3.0 best roms with out a doubt so smooth and stable amazing battery life i love them throw on a Faux or Demonspeed Kernel and your good to good! Sense roms are pretty good i love unity but battery drain is ridiculous some of the people say they get like 20 hours and post all these screenshots of battery life time but if u look at the usage its minimal im a pretty heavy user so for me to say battery life is good its good! lol most ppl could get 14 to 18 hours i got 14 with pretty heavy usage non stop texting music, vids, couple pictures soo i vote for either of those. Cyanogen is easier to use and comes with Adw as stock launcher. pretty kewl.

Yeah, but doesn't CM7 not have some of the stock features of the phone?

Ohhhh, I thought you needed to root to setup adb at first. I'm trying to find my eMMC serial, but this is what happens.
Code:
md-iMac:~ md$ /adb devices
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
SH12JRM01408 device
The above code means adb is running right? If so, I get this when I type in the first code to find my eMMC.
Code:
md-iMac:~ md$ adb reboot recovery
-bash: adb: command not found
md-iMac:~ md$
Btw, I used this link to setup adb, on my Mac.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928370

Read the end of the thread.
There's a single command, cat /proc/some_long_path_to_virtual_device
Execute it and you'll see.
Plus, I'll go against most recommendations in this thread. "Pure" Android/Cyanogenmod ROMs might be good for some, but for me they're awful, visually and functionally inferior compared to Sense ROMs, especially to Sense 3 (Virtuous Unity). And I've been AOSP/CM user for a long time, but got tired of the ever-present quirks and lacking functionality.

Ughhhhh, I used the terminal method, and got the bad one sadly.

Well, the choice is still yours. You can take a risk and root, if you have warranty, and see if your "bad" eMMC holds - or you can avoid rooting, but you're still risking, since the "bad" eMMC, if it's really bad, will fail nonetheless from normal use - just a bit later. Just that if you're not rooted, you'll probably have less worries exchanging it.

Does T-Mobile or HTC replace phones with a bad eMMC, I got the extra monthly pay warranty if that helps.

Just to be clear... Nobody has proven beyond a doubt that the emmc will fail if it's the bad one. It's just a strong theory at this point. I say enjoy your phone the way you want to. The good chips have failed too.

I'm guessing it took a fair amount of work to get CM6 up and running on the G2... so I'd say it's a step forward. There are steps between the beginning and the end.

What I'm doing is bringing in all the necessary modifications to *userspace* to build from source and support all the hardware. This is not simply pushing files around. There are a lot of changes for 7x30 required since much of the audio and video output works completely different than what we (and AOSP partially) currently support.
It's not a step forward towards a real root, but a step forward towards having something you can build from scratch and do whatever you'd like with.
Because of cyanogen's work, when the real root happens we will have his amazing rom to use =D

Those are the people I like to call ass-amistic... They see no glass at all, they see no good, and only some negative. They argue about everything and think they are right about everything...
I think that summed it up! Oh and great work Cyanogen
May not be progress towards root, but it's progress towards having a stable rom as soon as a permanent root is available.
Keep up the good work Cyanogen.
They just hate the fact they have nothing to contribute to "forward movement" whay cyan is doing is far more productive than "why I don't has root yet"....
I have nothing "real" to contribute besides my gratitude and as soon as the "code guru's" who make these phones so much fun do crack the root issue I will buy my G2....
Ignore the haters and lert them be "right"

this is quite OT, but I was wondering how come DHDs overclocked to 1.5Ghz can achieve 3k+ Quadrant scores but the G2 needs to be OCed to 1.8 or 1.9Ghz to achieve similar scores? The extra RAM of the DHD makes so much difference?
Well its a different processor, not just lower clocked.
I dont know the specs off the top of my head but i would guess it has smaller caches. That does make a difference. I doubt ram comes into it for most of the benchmarks.

Not going to lie, I had NO idea what I was doing... but I think I just stumbled through it all.....
are the kernels dangerous.... how can I test/check to see if it is worthwhile.... will they drain the battery even more so? thx
Depending what kernel and what clock speed you set, you should be able to underclock to around 700 +/- mhz and not have any noticeable slow downs.
Just make sure you set a lower speed when your screen is off and you battery will last upwards of 24 hours.
thx, I just that 1.51 one for now.... seems to be working well, I put a profile in for screen off.... dropping it to 256-756 or whatever it is! did some light benching, angry birds, no lag or issues so far.... woke up and the phone is still alive, lol

Should I Root?

I'm comming from the HTC HD2 so I know about the whole process and how everything works. I love to mess around with my phone and see what it can do but the Evo is so fast already and runs smooth. Im not afraid of breaking the phone because I have insurance and I always take special precautions. Is it worth me to root? I love sense and would love to have GB + Sense 3.0.
Also Ive read into 4G keys, does CWM backup the WiMax partition automatically?
This is my first time working with a CDMA phone?
thanks for any input, also if anyone is using a GB+ Sense 3.0 build is it worth it?
You sorta answered your own question
You should just get amon ra recovery. No problems but you have to flash everything manually. Meaning you can't use the rom manager app that downloads and flashes automatically for you.
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
Just go to the Development section, find a rom that fits your criteria (Virus comes to mind) and flash away!
Make sure you back up first, so if you are unhappy you can revert back. Only you can decide if it's "worth it"

You all have convinced me I'm rooted now just exploring builds!!!
I knew i couldnt stay away from the Development section long
i'd try cm7, mikfroyo, myn's warm twopointtwo, and a sense 3.0 build. if you decide you like aosp, try more aosp roms. if you decide you like sense, try koni's and other sense roms. have fun, and welcome to the forums (evo side at least)

Question: what kernel is this rom carrying? I'm back and forth from Froyo to GB because of two issues: BT calls breaking occasionally when I answer, and camera stability. Wondering if you're having issues with either.

All right smart asses. Jcase pulled his ROM since he knew it was using an alpha radio that bricked phones. Using any gingerbread ROM with a connection to data (I.e. Using the alpha radio) gives you a chance to brick your phone. No one knows why this radio causes issues but it does.
Happy now?
I am not trying to defer people away from this ROM I am as happy as anyone else that we have another toy to play with but people need to now there is a serious risk that cannot be avoided by making sure you flash correctly or don't mess with the wrong thing. It just happens. Again Zarboz thank you for the ROM I just want people to have a heads up about the issues.
And just so everyone knows I am currently using this ROM and don't plan on jumping ship anytime soon.

Do any atrix roms that are out run vanilla android?

I'm looking for a rom that runs basically vanilla android? does anyone know of any that are completed? essentially, the slowness of blur it's what I'm trying to get rid of.

Is this your sneaky way of asking if cyanogenmod is completed yet?
I voided my warranty.
Not at all. I know there are a bunch of roms out there now, and didn't know much about them. So I was just wondering if any run vanilla android.

Nope. Cyanogen is closest we'll get. Atrix didn't come with stock and source was recently released.

well your best bet to learn about them... is to read about them. every ROM has a huge list of features and screenshots. do the homework and make your choice that way.
This thread I believe has all but one of the ROMs available for the Atrix listed in it if you scroll down, it's near the bottom, then you can go through each thread, look at screen shots, requirements to flash, etc. When I was trying to decide which ROM to flash first I used this thread as a guide, kept it open in one tab and opened the threads for each individual ROM in another tab.

I'd say flash Alien ROM along with the Alien theme. But, that's just my thinking. Good luck in your research.

Congratulations on an effective thread-crap.
OP: Alien seems pretty good to me. Snappier than stock, been stable for me... I am personally waiting for a touch more polish before putting CM7 on my daily driver.

I agree that Alien is a great ROM (I'm using it), but it's not a Vanilla ROM as the OP has asked for, and it's not as de-blurred as, say, Ninja or something. I dunno how usable Ninja is now, as Sam had to temporarily leave it for CM work...
@OP, you could surely flash the CM7 pre-beta, as it's quite stable. The only major thing that doesn't work as of now is the Camera, I believe...
