So I went to copy a ~5gb movie over to my new 32Gb 10.1 tab and it said I don't have enough space... I thought huh? Then I checked properties on the root and it only shows like 2GB free??? Then i went to astro file manager on the tab and it shows all 31Gb free??? whats going on?
I'm running ubuntu linux on my laptop, connecting through supplied usb.
I don't think you can copy files larger than 4gb.
4gb file is the max you can transfer when using Windows Explorer. Its a fat32 limit.
I'm using nautilus...

Can you still download APK files amd install them on the SGT 10.1 even though it does not have a micro SD card? If so, how?
Yes, it still has got up to 32gb of internal memory.
Yes you can. Make sure you enable side loading of apps. Go to settings, applications then check unknown sources.
Now you can download apps and install them. use a file browser to find your downloaded apk and just run it.

How do I sideload thee? Let me count the ways ...
1. Dropbox.
2. Mount Tab as MTP device and copy-paste to internal memory.
3. FTP from remote server.
4. Mount network drive through SMB and copy-paste to internal memory.
5. Email apk file to myself through Gmail as attachment.
6. Bluetooth file transfer.
7. Download directly to Tab through internet browser.
8. ADB file push.
9. Copy from thumb drive using USB adapter.
There's probably a few more, but I think I made my point.
(For what it's worth, using a SD card to transfer files to a device reminds me of the good-old days of using floppy disks to "network" files around the office. Its basically the same thing. Used a lot of floppy disks recently?)
its surprisingly easy

If you use included 40pin to USB cable and attach to a computer, the tablet internal storage *should* show up as a drive. Not tried it myself.
Alternatively if you can download to tablet, you can use a file browser to find the /downloads folder and launch it to install.

I can see my 16 gig usb stick and move and use files. When I plug in my My Touch Slide 4G and put it into "disk drive" mode, it cannot see it. Is this an issue with 32gb card too big? Or is it an issue that the files I want are "seen" differently than a standard memory device?
When I connect the phone to my computer that way, it looks just like any other external drive.
Thanks
I personally have my g2x plugged in and it mounts sd too, have you enabled debugging?

USB Storage from phone to tablet
My My Touch Slide 4G works just fine as a disk drive when connected to my Windows 7 desktop or my XP laptop. USB debugging is on and it is set to work just like a memory device. I have tried a 500 gb external drive and a usb stick drive.
When I connect the phone to my tablet, the usb and debugging icons come up on the phone. The sd card is inaccessable because it is not mounted to the phone. When I use either Astro File Manager or Root Explorer (I am not rooted) I get no files on the USB storage "folder". Blank. No files. When I tried this on Root Explorer, it just shows that I don't have root access. I'm thinking that if I had root access that I could get at the files.
My phone is rooted, which is why I have Root Explorer. Since I got the Slide as a replacement for the my G2 I no longer have any custom rom in the phone.
So, anyone know why I cannot get to my phone files?
Thanks again
We have the same devices!
I would just use Bluetooth File Transfer. It's free in the Market and works fast. Just install it on both devices. I use it to transfer files from the A500 to my MT4GS and my wife's G2.

I just purchased a the tab 2 10.1 and installed a 32gb card, that I purchased with it. I run Linux mint on an aluminum Imac. When I connect the tab with the USB cord, it says "unable to mount GT-P5113 Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device". I ended up transferring my mp3's by using FTP server into the music folder on the card. I uploaded like 10GB then said it was out of storage. Under device memory, it shows me that the available space is very minimal and under SD card it shows the available space is the same as the total space. When I check in es file explorer the /SDCARD directory has all my music files. I'm confused as to where these files are really saved. I'm also trying to gain root and have been having problems. Any help would be appreciated.
First things first. Do you know where the 32g card came from? If it's not a name brand from a known good company it could be fake. i would put the card in your Mac and format it and also run a test on it to make sure it is a real 32g. I forget the name of the sd test program but you can google it.

its h2testw on windows.
if you are transferring to the Music folder on the tablet, then you are transferring onto the internal memory of the Tablet, which explains why you ran out of space....
You need to connect to whatever mount the tablet uses for the External SDCard. I use windows, so i cannot tell you how to connect to External SDCard of the tablet using Linux,. However, when using file Explorer on my P5110, it shows the EXTERNAL SDCard mounted as /mnt/extSdCard
If I've helped, click Thanks, if not, good luck I hope you find a solution
Patriot is the brand name, I purchased it along with the tablet from tigerdirect. It seems the problem is Linux is not recognizing the tablet by USB.
Thanks, it works. Phones that I have rooted had /sdcard as the root of the sdcard

I woud like to know answer to thise too.

Yup, if the phone says blank drive or unsupported format, it's probably in NTFS. You can format it to either FAT32 or exFAT.
Fat32 doesn't slow down your disk, but you have a 4gb file limit which is annoying if you have HD Movies or other large files.
what u mean by 4gb limit? each file?!
btw i dont wonna use that a got a 32gb sony flash and i can use it IF i got out of storage or some times for diffrent uses just wonna know

I know, but I like to have everything in as few files and folders as possible. Just my personal idiosyncrasy.
me too
btw i hope they add ntfs support in the other versions
Or you could use one of the multitude of apps on Play that allow you to mount NTFS-formatted drives. Chainfire's StickMount works pretty well for me on the S4 (requires root).

Hi all, iv tried mounting my wd passport 1tb to s4 i9500 5.0.1 via otg but the app plugin stops working for some reason i dont know. Iv read that it is only achievable with rooted phones for i9500 but that was sometime ago now..
Does any one know an efficient way to do this now with an unrooted phone?
Or if i need to root phone to open this wd 1tb ext hdd, what specific mods work best?

wow that was years ago! i got rid of that phone for a nexus 4. I loved it
anyway
I suggest that you try to use es explorer if you still have it. it can recognize NTFS unlike the stock browser

Yeah shes an oldie lol, in the last year iv destroyed 3 phones due to tough working conditions so i cant afford to keep replacing nicer new phones I'll try es explorer as you suggested.. so far iv tried total commander with the paragon ums plugin, that does pick up smaller usb drives ie. My 16gb transcend stick. Other reports mention to root & cm11 does the job.
Anyway I'll give es explorer a shot and report back :good:

Ok tried. Es explorer at first recognised the wd passort 1tb ext hdd but wasnt able to read any files showing 0% after i still tried to open the folder but phone crashed.
Not sure if the cause was due to only 35% battery life or a clash of paragon ums plugin wanting to start up too?
Unless someone has better ideas i might just use a pc to transfer the files from the wd 1tb to the smaller recognisable 16gb usb. Or use the pc to copy in the phones micro sd.
If i go the root option for i9500 5.0.1 to use otg with the wd 1tb ext hdd what flash files are most suited?
Hello there.
So I am using Moto X Style with newest 6.0.1 (May patch). I found a nice price for a OTG usb memory, SanDisk Ultra Dual USB 3.0 with 16 GB of space. I ve got it formatted to FAT32 with default allocation unit using my Windows 10. When I connect this device to my phone - it is recognized correctly and I can acces it using built it file manager. As you know, this file manager really su*k in functionality, so for a daily use I am using ZArchiver or Solid Explorer without ANY problems. I am also using SD Card (SanDisk Ultra 32 GB UHS-1 with 48MB/s max speed of write) formated as external memory and yes, it works very well without any issues. I can copy any files from internal memory to it, and delete without problems.
Unfortunatelly, mentioned above Dual USB drive did not work properly with my phone. It is recognized by my phone well, I can acces memory using built-in file manager. But in any other application as ZArchiver or Solid Explorer (or many more) and problems are very random - I can write a data to it (creating a new catalogues, files, copying files from internal memory or from memory card), I can open files saved on it using Solid Explorer or built-in file manager, but I cannot delete files or archives or catalogues using ZArchiver and Solid Explorer. In ZArchiver notihing happens, in Solid Explorer I have an error mentioning, that file cannot be deleted (without any details).
Also there is no information about free space or all available space in ZArchiver and Solid Explorer - this data is available for my SD card...
On my Windows machine I can do whatever I want with this USB. Also on my Meizu M2 Note. So I just wondering if there is an issue with my phone olny, or with that Dual USB Drive...

It looks like something was changed now, but why? I am now able to delete files from my two USB stick (one is that mentioned earlier) using Solid Explorer 2.2.8. I am now on 7.0, and some time ago (still on 6.0.1) I perform a full system restore (from recovery). Maybe some system files were broken or changed, and now, after restoring (or after updating to Nougat) these files ale fixed now.
If you have a possibility, try to restore your phone. Otherwise wait for Nougat update, meanwhile use this application:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.droidkitchen.filemanager
I used it in needed of delete files from USB stick, while I cannot perform this action in other apps.
