Yep! With 3.1 at least, IconiaRoot works, Gingerbreak doesn't.
How's that for a benefit?
Im running latest HV and kernal and Gingerbreak. But wil add IconiaRoot to my collection for maybe later thanks.

I'm sure this question is posted somewhere on here but I couldn't find it. This is my first post.
A friend of mine has a rooted Droid X with 2.1 right now. He wants to get updated to 2.2 but he doesn't want/need a new ROM or anything like that. The only reason he's rooted is so he can get free wifi hotspot.
What's the easiest/quickest way to get him updated to 2.2 (preferably without having to wipe)?

He can do the 2.2 OTA update, but he'll lose root. Of course, you can find a handful of 2.2 rooting methods on this board, so no biggie.
Best rooting method
Ok. Thanks for the quick response! What's the easiest way to root 2.2? I'm really new to all this (if you can't already tell).

I followed these instructions. Not sure if they're the easiest, but I can confirm that they work. Helped a couple of friends root after OTA with these steps, as well.

Easier
Even easier than that, go check the Droid 2 forum for the 1-click root by DarkOnion and Faceless... the 1 click method works for both the D2 and the DX.

Which model do u use...?
The a500 or the a501?
I think a downgrade would be the safest alternative =P

I too am having this problem. Unfortunately, every time I try to downgrade using a stock 3.1 ROM using the stock recovery it will not boot and since CWM is gone I cannot restore to backed up ROM.

this is a prime example why it is always best to wait until the devs get their hands on the update. You are just going to have to wait till the root programs and CMW are updated to work with the new build. Early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese

@amburke178
Yeah its true u better should be patient...
I dont know whether the devs are working on it..but a downgrade to 3.0.1 or3.1 would solve the problem... there are various ROMS/ custom ROMS..
To my sorrow i almost used every rom they offered in the dev section..
One Rom should work..if not try to be patient... =D

i think it is because of the new bootloader. Your best bet at this point is to just wait for the new root program to come out. Shouldn't take them that long for it. Don't know about the itsmagic update that could take time, but everything would speed up if anybody would upload the new build so the devs can start looking at it.
I captured the 3.2 update when it came in to my tablet, I have the update.zip and would gladly share it if it helps get root faster.
Not entirely sure the best way to share a 350meg file though!
File I have is an update from 4.010.38 (3.1) to 7.006.01 (3.2) (file claims to be Acer_A500_4.010.38_7.006.01_COM_GEN1)
I can probably put it on some webspace for someone, but I'm afraid if I post it publicly my bandwidth limit will be quickly exceeded.

Of course that occurred to me about 10 seconds after I hit submit...
So I have uploaded it to megaupload...
Unfortunately this forum won't let me post external links... so I can't tell you how to find it!
edit: ok, finally I can post links, so I'm updating this: www.megaupload.com/?d=UXOVADAS
This update comes from 4.010.38 to 7.006.01 so you'll need to be on 4.010.38 first to do the update. (that one can be found in the master ROM list on this site at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 )
---------- Post added at 04:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:25 PM ----------
Hopefully this allows some of the developers to start playing with rooting 3.2
Additionally for anyone who has managed to brick their tablet trying to downgrade to an earlier version, this file can be used to get you back up and running (at least it worked to get me back up after I tried to downgrade to 3.1)
Thanks for the upload

Ahh! Thanks so much I was using an A501 3.2 update since I had bricked it earlier today. This will help much with the stupid wifi dropouts.
Made a mirror : http://vache-android.com/v1/download.php?fileID=91
no problem, please feel free to share to anyone who can help make root a reality for 3.2!
(I miss my root... and downgrading doesn't really appear to be an option right now...)
I also note that you maintain the list of packages and updates at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
maybe add this one?

I was trying that on a virtualized version of Windows and could not get it to work.... This was using the same method that you referenced on the link. I guess my real issue is that I don't have a real Windows machine in place.

The method this person posted also includes the engineering hBoot, which is not required to flash anything.
and if the one line code is interned incorrectly you will brick your device

Hello
All my setting are correct and when i load up gingerbreak it just runs when i click root and doesn't do anything is there away to fix this?
Thanks For the help
Did you downgrade?
It won't run on 3.2. Be sure your running anything older than 3.2.
What have you done so far exactly?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
I personally used the 2nd method. I don't really like using adb.

Gingerbreak only worked on HC 3.01
Iconia Root for 3.1
And downgrade first before rooting if you're on HC 3.2

You need your serial number from your USB and will have to flash it. That is currently the only to root 3.2x.
Hope this helps,

If you've downgraded to the unstable version, that's where you want to be, root it, install Acer recovery, which you will install CWM with, then install a "pre-rooted" 3.2 or custom 3.2 ROM.
FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER FROM WHEREVER YOU'RE GETTING YOUR DIRECTIONS TO DOWNGRADE!

Just flash it to 3.2.1 and be done with it, why downgrade and waste your time? The instructions are in the readme.pdf I sent you.

Like kjy2010 says, read up a bit before you do ANYTHING. That search on the top right? Its your friend

I think if you just read through the forum you'll find your answer. If after you read those and need some help, we'll help. Most of what you need is posted.
If you can't read up then PLEASE for the love of everything, DON'T flash your tab... It gets soooooo annoying reading the threads created saying that someones tab is "bricked" and they can't fix....
So easy a thing to do when you are prepared, hell for everyone when you aren't...

I mean yes the root works. Everything is good. Xposed and etc but the performance on it can be better. You can make it the best root you can ! Use the Echo ROM if you can. This the only way you can root is by using the Engboot so take it or leave it. You can still use it as a DD with this root method. Not the best way to root but does the job
