I rooted my friends mytouch and I can't get cwm to work. I've tried through the app and using the terminal method. Rom manager says its complete but it still has stock recovery.

You can try this. Open rom manager, menu, clear download. Try the flash again. Better is on wifi or a strong 3g signal.

Are you sure you are rooted? Theres some apps that will check for root and you can always open terminal and try su, otherwise try to clear the app cache and reload/reflash?

S is on after using visionary. But it stays rooted after boot without temp root. I don't understand it. Lol
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
It doesn't stay and you're not rooted. Having superuser app doesn't mean you're rooted, it might be installed on /data and not on /system, and won't be functional.
Open Terminal Emulator, type "su" and see if you get a Superuser prompt. Or open any root app (like Titanium backup) and see if you have toast notification "the app has been granted Superuser permissions".

OK you need to turn Security off on your bootloader ok that's what S-on/S-off is.
Extract the root.rar attachment to the root of your sdcard. Temp root with visionary again and install Terminal emulator open Terminal type (su) then hit enter you'll have to press menu then toggle keyboard then type (cd /sdcard/root) hit enter the type ( sh root.sh ) wait for it to finish when it's done it will say check bootloader for s-off. Now go to settings applications and uncheck fastboot power off the phone wait a min then hold down vol - and power it should go into the bootloader check for s-off. Now you can root again and flash cwm.

I stalled visionary from akaskriller.com since it wasnt on the market. I installed rom manger, titanium back up. Uinstalled some bloatware etc... But how do I know if im temp or perm rooted?????
Uncheck "run on boot" option in Visionary, pull your battery, restart the phone and try running su in terminal emulator. If you get permission denied - you're temp rooted.
Ok km going to try it now

Manual method is soooooo easy I don't understand the desire to use VISIONary+ for permroot. Its not even real permanent root.
S-OFF is NEEDED for custom ROMs... so if you don't want to use custom ROMS, stick with temproot with VISIONary+
If you DO want custom ROMS and true R/W access, do the manual method. I see 0 point in using the one click permroot.

Not really, you have have s=off and not be rooted. all s=off means is the security protocol will not check to see if the phone has been tampered with. IF you have s=off and you go to visionary and click "temp toot" then "perm root" your phone will be rooted until you unroot it. Since the security protocol will not remove the SU access.
Hello all, newer android user here. I used VISIONary to perm root the device and all superuser permissions are working fine. But when I try to go in recovery mode a red triangle error with an exclamation point comes up. Did some searching and still no luck.

Sounds like you still have the stock recovery installed. Go into your hboot mend (power button and down on the volume rocker) and make sure that you have s-off, then download Rom manager from the market and flash clockwork recovery.

Thanks for the response. S is on - what do I do to get it off? The reason I used visionary is because I have no access to a pc - just a macbook.
Also, I have already downloaded clockwork and flashed

Flash the Recovery ROM again. Your first attempt must have failed. The red triangle -is- the stock recovery (which only shows that screen, nothing more).
couldnt say it better, Would recommend using computer to go through process just to understand the details of rooting. Very helpful,

You do not need a PC to root you phone. IIRC Android does have an SDK for apple computers
any who you can turn s=off via a script. The Unlockr has a kick @$$ walk through for doing it. The Unlockr
Basically you download This file
and
extract the folder from with in the .zip
then you store that folder on the root of the SD card
Download "terminal emulator" from the market
then from within the Term. Emul
$ su
# cd/sdcard/root
# sh root.sh

And it will push/edit the files needed for "s=off" on your phone
after you've done that boot into BootLoader (how down the volume down button and power button when you turn on the device) make sure at the top it says s=off.
after you do that Flash the Clockwork ROM Recovery Image.
Instructions worked great.
Except now I have flashed iced glacier on - and every time I try to use the internet, the page fully loads then immediately closes and returns to home screen. Mini Opera works fine though.. ?

That's the link to the thread to the leaked rom. I was wondering if I have to be rooted to install and if not how do I install it?? Many thanks.
You have to be rooted because you have to be able to get into recovery to wipe everything before flashing, none of which is possible without root. although in all the root guides it states that it's difficult blah blah blah it really isn't. I rooted with gfree and visionary.
download gfree and visionary
temproot using visionary
unzip the gfree files (androzip) to data/local/ (you must have a root explorer)
after you've done that go into terminal emulator (free from market)
type su to gain superuser permissions
Type "cd data/local/"
then hit enter and type: "chmod 777 gfree"
Then after that type in "./gfree -f"
All of which you leave out quotation marks then reboot. after that go to visionary and check set system R/W and hit "attempt permroot now"
This is essentially the stickied thread in the development section just without the warning signs everywhere although you MUST be careful and if you don't understand any of it feel free to ask a question. Welcome to the forums by the way
Basic Disclaimer: I'm in no way responsible for you getting fired because your phone crapped out and your alarm didn't go off or you are now a proud owner of a brick due to not following my directions.
You need to get rooted
S-off your phone.
Root your phone.
And then get your phone engnieering bootloader (0.85.2007)---strongly recommended.
Isn't this a 2.2 mysense(froyo) rom? So basically is stock. Why wouldn't it be able to be flashed through the stock 2.2 mysense(froyo) recovery? Just wondering.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
Because the one that's being distributed by faux has root and well honestly I don't know about the leak...you could try naming it Update.zip and putting on root of sdcard then booting into stock recovery. If that doesn't work keep it named what it was when downloaded then try. But I must ask why don't you just root?

You do not need to have s-off. Look in the dev section and there is a thread with a link to the Rom to flash through hboot.
You will only need to rename the file and copy it to the root of your SD card. Reboot your phone into hboot. Profit.
Hope that helps.

The ROOT Permissions need to be enabled via SuperUser app (Superuser app is found in Tools folder).
While in SuperUser app, go to Settings by pressing menu button, then turn on ROOT Permissions.
That's all....................don't worry about the root access..........
Oh lololololol that it is. Thanks guys
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
After turn on ROOT Permissions, I do a reboot and that do the trick
when I first read this I thought about the super user from the app store. I dont know who posted this suggestion but yesterday I had the same problem. I didnt know that the superuser came with the ROM.
So for the newbs, like me, that are still having problems make sure to go to the "tools" folder which should be on the left wall screen. I wasnt used to folders cause I used CM7 for a while.
Short story:
go to "tools" folder on left wall after 1st install to find super user.
funny thing is i knew that since i'd installed miui before but switched to faux rom. musta also forgotten to read that from the OP in miui thread :|, good learning experience
you live, you learn.....READ CAREFULLY bro lol
When I saw the port for ICS come out I got really excited and flashed it right away. Then I realized for whatever reason I didnt have SU permissions so I couldn't tether to my computer. I was disappointed but I thought, "no biggie, I'll just restore from my back up." When I flashed my back up the SU app was in my app drawer but I still couldn't tether. As a matter of fact I can't do anything that requires SU but the bootloader still reads unlocked. WTF?
I can't flash a new recovery either. I tried installing from ROM manager, I tried pushing it from my computer but I can't get to the recovery any more. ROM manager says that I have CWM 5.0.2.0 currently installed but I can't get to it at all. Again, WTF?

^clearly the phone is working perfectly fine with the stock ROM from the back up but obviously I want my SU back.

Thanks for not answering my questions. The bootloader is unlocked but I don't have root and I don't have access to recovery mode even tho ROM Manager says I have Clockwork Mod 5.0.2.0 currently installed. I cannot access the recovery mode AT ALL. I cannot flash or push a new recovery but it fully boots into Gingerbread w/o any issues. What is wrong with my phone and how do I fix it.

Try from rom manager to reinstall a previous recovery version.

That doesn't work either. It goes through the prompts but it doesn't actually reboot do the installation.
I just tried unrooting and then re - rooting but that didn't work and I think that actually wiped my phone completely. I don't even know where an SD card would get into this thing.

No suggestions have worked so far. It does not matter what the recovery image name is, whenever I try the flash it Terminal says that it cannot load "***.img" or if I try an install command it says that it cannot find "***.zip" I'm on a snow leopard iMac so I don't need drivers n such.
Let me pose the question like this, what would I do to completely restore the phone to factory condition and try to root it again? Like I said before, the bootloader says that it is unlocked but I do not have any root privileges, could not access the recovery I had before nor install a new recovery after having locked the unlocked the phone's bootloader again.

go to the link above and follow the directions for returning to stock.
find yourself a one-click root method on XDA that includes superuser, busybox, and CWM.
EDIT: Also, double check the md5 sum for the CWM .zip. use
Code:
md5 recovery-aaaaaa.img
in the terminal and make sure the output matches whatever is given on the CWM site. if they dont have one up, ask for it
NS4g one-click root app:
