I have used Nexus phones for the longest time but as I got a tablet (first Galaxy Tab and now I have a 10.1 coming) I find myself using the smart part of the smart phone very little. That said, my thinking is I am sitting on several hundred bucks I do not really use in my Nexus S so I sold it on E-Bay and took advantage of a T-Mobile deal that got me the MyTouch 3G for free (well, for extra $10/mo for contract cost).
So now I am back to a phone with Android hacked up by carriers and even though I do not use it as I once did there are several very annoying things (apps I cannot uninstall, MyFavs instead of starred in Android, and other stupid carrier crap). Anyways, i was thinking of just going with Cyanogen to try to get back to Android my way, or at least not T-Mobile's way. Any suggestions on if Cyanogen is the right MOD for this phone - all I really want is something as close to vanilla Android as possible with the least hassle possible. Also, I know there are many methods for flashing ROMs - recommendation on the easiest and most reliable?

Cyanogen is pretty good and bloat free if you like sense I would go with virtuous unity a near perfect rom.

Methods for flashing ROMs? The only way to flash anything is in recovery mode. You have to root your phone and install ClockworkMod recovery, then you'll be able to install ROMs.
Once that's done, I would try CyanogenMod or RoyalGinger, since you want the plain Android UI.

you are aware that this is the MyTouch4G department. They are two completely different phones. Rooted two totally different ways.
1) if you are still on Android 1.5/1.6 you need to download/install/run Universal Nandroot. It will root your phone. Then download Clockwork ROM Manager and flash the recovery image and flash away. CM stopped development @ CM6. But due to RAM requirements for that phone and 2.1 you'll need to install and run SWAPPER2. It's a good app. and you'll be good to go.
2) if you are on the 2.1 updated version. you should be able to download Super One Click Rooter and do it that way. then download CWRM and flash the recovery image. If that still falls short you can always visit the MyTouch3G section of this forum, and you should find something there.

I saw that too, but the thread title says 4G, so I assumed it was a typo. Who knows with some people though...

you hit the nail on head. I know they are still selling the Glacier, but they are giving away the Magic. So when i saw free i assumed the Magic and the 10 bucks is for the data pack.

i used the method found on theunlockr.com it worked first try and ive never rooted a phone before and have no prior knowledge about how to do it. i used a few roms. iced glacier first then a few others but have stuck with Faux's AOSP rom. its been by far the most stable and the best performing. i get the best benchmarks as well as the best battery life. your best bet is to read read and read some more. then when you think you've read enough, read a whole s**t ton more.

Typo on my part - I have myTouch 4g.
I looked at Virtuous Unity and it seems nice and clean - anyone have any warnings about that ROM?
So I got it rooted easy enough and loaded Cyanogen 7. Going to load up Virtuous Unity now that I got the process down and see how that one looks. Thanks for the info - it is much easier now than it was a few years back when I last bothered with customer ROMs.
All the sense roms have to much bloat. Try cm7 or fauxs AOSP.

Absolute easiest and safest way
You don't have to flash a custom ROM to get rid of the bloatware on a MT4G and beat it back to the simplicity of a Nexus One (almost). Because the MT4G is still on 2.2.1, Visionary will still work to temproot and then you can use Titanium Pro to "freeze" the bloatware you don't want to see. Once you've frozen the apps they stay frozen whether you temproot again or not. If you want to use some apps that require rooting though, such as Quickboot, you can set Visionary to temproot whenever you boot. Visionary r11 seems to work better than r14 on the MT4G.
Using the above simple and reversible method, plus a custom launcher, I've got the Apps drawer and home screens to look pretty much as they do on my Nexus One on 2.2.1. You are stuck with the HTC idiotic phone screen ("faves") and the useless Genius button but you get in return a front facing camera and 4G speed.

You can flash Virtuous Unity. It's an excellent ROM. And MT4G is powerful enough to run anything, and not resort to AOSP-style ROMs.

I plan on buying a HD2 from a friend and unlocking it and putting andriod on it. Can anybody tell me which is the best version of android to put on it? and where to get it? Also does the HSPL2 unlock so I can use on any carrier?

this question has been asked several times over. I dont want to come across smug or anything and sorry if i am but this all boils down to opinion. The reason being is what you like and want on your phone may not be what i like.
With that being said do you like sence ROMs, cyanogen ROMs or miui? they all are very different. here take a look at this page, it lists just about every android build for our beloved hd2 but lists them in a much easier way to find them. The site is updated daily and also gives some basic info on each ROM as well as links you to them.
If your friend wouldn't mind calling T-mobile for you he can have it unlocked for free, it wouldnt cost a penny. The only catch is he has to already have a account with T-mobile. They will give you the code and then all you need to do is have a at&t sim card to punch in the code, really easy actually. Ebay sells them sometimes for cheap also. I've seen them as low as $10 on there but that was several weeks ago now.

Someone with a active T-Mobile account will need to be the one to call to get the code and yes, you'll just need to give them the imei#. All I said when I called was I would like to get an unlock code for my phone and they gave it to me.
When you place the sim card in the phone and turn it on you'll just need to punch in the numbers T-Mobile gave you and that's it. Takes just a minute really.

I just got my hd2 last weekend from Craigslist. I got an awesome deal. I unlocked it from eBay for exactly $6.24 and received the code in about 12 hours, I ordered it Sunday night. Weekdays it would be faster. I currently have cyanogenmod by typhoon on it right now its really fast.

Hello, Guys I just got my GNote International today, I'm fairly well at the rooting and getting things going after I get a push in the right direction. My Current devices are only the Galaxy Note and Asus Transformer Prime, HP Touchpad, But in the past Ive done rooting with The original GTab from Viewsonic -First tablet, Nook, Streak 7, ZTE warp, Galaxy Tab 10.1, HP Touchpad, Asus Transformer Prime- Current Tab. I have never rooted a phone before besides the Warp and it was very simple, one click deal, The GNote seems very complex it is a different beast. So I really need some help with This bad boy, If you can help thank you very much.

1. I wont get my Straight Talk [email protected] Sim card until tomorrow, I was told to order the att straight talk Sim Card is that right. I had the option of unlocked or ATT and on the message board most responses said get att, so you don't get stuck on EDGE and t-mobile.
2. Should I let it update and root before I get the Sim in it. I'm ready to get started now but like i said I wont get my Sim until tomorrow. Its already asking me to update but I haven't done anything yet because I know update can ruin rooting methods, etc.
3. I live in the US this phone will be fine as working right it was the only white one and I wanted a white one with the home button. I don't think it matters just making sure I didn't jump the gun, and that this will work with straight talk ATT Sim.
On my current version and rom, kernel etc. what would be the easiest root method for me. So I can put CWM and start setting it up to my liking.
If you need anymore info just let me know I haven't put this thing down since I got it. My Asus Prime aint been out all day. It seems like the Phone are way more complicated to root and get set up with Sim Cards. Maybe its just because I'm new to the phones, my Warp was a 4.3 Boost Mobile and I thought that would be all the bigger I would need but I like Samsung products and this is just so much bigger than it sounds like it would be, and the use of a tablet and phone is what made me jump.
My tech knowledge is decent at least 7-8 so I will figure it out. I just don't want to skip important steps. I want to make sure I do everything in order, that's why I asked if I can root and all that before my sim card gets here tomorrow, remember this is my first root on a phone that is unlocked. If anyone can help me make sure I don't do anything out of order, I will appreciate it a lot. Thanks for any help in advance.
It doesnt matter if you root with or without sim card. Probably need to find the apn settings for your chosen carrier.

For APN, download APN backup & restore from market, then backup your current APN, then even if you flash official or custom roms, you can always restore your son if the from doesn't have it

You can set your apn first/middle/last, it doesnt matter. Just like your previous devices, your apn is always available in your settings option. You can change it whenever or add one whenever. Root just gives you access to system files and will not effect your apn.
Stop thinking so hard lol. But make sure you read, read, read before installing ics. I would recommend downloading a few stock gb roms and making backup of your current rom before going forward. Its extremely hard to brick a samsung device, but make sure you have something ready before installing.
Root now..the sim card is just your service..you set apn on any new rom.just jump on wifi for data...don't ever update the phone through settings..unless you want to lose root..always install rooted roms so you may wait a day for a rooted version.
Personally Samsung is a different animal then what I'm use to which is HTC.
I have not used Odin for the PC at all..I've only used mobile Odin pro from the market or cmw.

Yeah I know that is true I have only rooted one cell in my life and it was one click job, simple! This seems to be a lot more technical but I will figure it out. I have rooted many tablets though right now I have a Asus Transformer Prime, HP Touchpad, ZTE Warp-Phone, Nook Color all rooted. In the past I've rooted plenty other tabs but just one phone and it was with one mouse click, and done.
When you first get into something new its like **** man this is crazy, then after about a week it gets easier. I hope that is the case with this phone. So why not ever do an over the air update? So I need to uncheck this RIGHT NOW So if the original ICS comes out don't do it over the air? Wait and do it another way correct? My phone already did one first boot, it was already check marked to download and install updates in the settings when I turned it on it did an update. I really didn't even have time to see what it was but it was a small minor update I think so. I used the settings for straight talk from here in the thread and I get around 3-5 MB down but have only tried it like 5 times in my basement.
The weird thing is that it thinks I'm in Kansas or something because speedtest.net app says finding the closest server and it finds one in Kansas and says I'm like 30klm away from the server and its the closest one? Anyone know why this is, or WTF is going on? I gave them my correct ZIP when I ordered the ST Sim Card. Most of the time it stays on HSDPA mode but I never see where it says who my carrier is, edit I see it says HOME I guess that's my carrier? so far that Ive noticed. I don't understand the location issue. maybe I should set up my GPS I don't like it on if I don't need it.

But I got super slim TPU style cases so it don't get much bigger I don't want to really add more bulk to it its getting hot outside, time for shorts, and that means no jacket pocket, I wear mostly loose fitting jeans/shorts nylon sports type. so I should be alright. Do I need a screen protector I saw one that strengthens it suppose to anyways. Alright enough questions I just don't want to ruin a $650 phone I just got, that's all.

you never do OTA updates because you will lose root and possibly the exploit that gave you root has been patched so you may be stuck without root..
The latest stuff will always be available very soon after its released so don't worry.
You're on prepaid so it will show Home as your carrier even though you're on AT&T and thats what you're on if you have a AT&T sim.
I would imagine if you use too much data they would throttle you instead of cut you off...that appears to be what at&t likes to do..I am almost always on wifi so its no biggy..
I would consider ICS ROM's advanaced so if this is new I would stick with gingerbread for the time being.
I'm used to ICS on my Transformer prime and I got it on my HP Touchpad, using CWM clearing old data caches and data etc. Then install my new rom so I don't think ICS would be that new to me. Is that what you are referring too. Or something else specific?
The question I have is that wont OTA Rootkeeper work while doing over the air updates, I use it for everything almost?
Basically, I have the option to trade my AT&T HTC One X for an Acer A501 and $200. Does this sound like a good deal? Sounds like a good deal to me but I don't know much about this tablet. I already have a Samsung GS3 so I don't really need the phone. The A501 is factory out of the box. Does the A501 use all the same rooting methods and stuff as the A500? Is there anything that would prevent me from being able to root this tablet and flash ROMs on it?

No Problem Mate.
Sounds like a fair trade to me. The 501 is a pretty good tab. If it's brand new out of the box. What I would make sure of though, is that it's not one of the ATT 501's where you are locked into their network. It's almost impossible to get ATT to unlock the device. And, there is currently no way to unlock it via hacks. You would be stuck with ATT for data access.
As far as rooting and installing roms, it can be done. But be advised, as with all rooting and flashing bootloaders, there is risk involved.
Yes, it is virtually identical to the 500 (except GSM and GPS), so what you can use on one, you can use on the other.

Yeah, I know all about the risks involved, this isn't my first rodeo, so to speak. I just didn't know if there was some of the tablets that weren't rootable or something. Thanks very much for the info. I'm getting it today, but I decided to keep my One X and trade my GS3 for the A501 and $300. I'm pretty happy with the deal.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I'll be on here looking for methods for rooting because I know the A501 is completely stock. I may send ya a PM if I run into any issues. I actually ended up selling my GS3 instead. I actually like the One X better and I'm getting $300 and the A501 for my GS3. The A501 has a little damage to one corner of it but I've seen it in action and all seems good. He's even going to let me swap back if something is acting screwy with the A501 within a couple of weeks. Seems like a straight up guy so I'm sure it's fine.
Since I know it's stock, I should plan on using this tool, correct?

Mr Moscow Desire did you how i can unlock wig AT&T and 501? This is my problem, i live in Brasil and a friend bought this a501 on Paraguay and i don't know if i really can use the internal 3G because its always ask for pin network unlock code. Sorry mate if i ask in the wrong place and thanks for your time.

This is my problem, i live in Brasil and a friend bought this a501 on Paraguay and i don't know if i really can use the internal 3G because its always ask for pin network unlock code. Your only chance to Sim unlock the ATT version of the tablet, is to first email Acer Support, then e-mail ATT technical support, and explain your situation. Explain that you live in a different country and that ATT service is not available, and you didn't know 3g wouldn't work on non-ATT Networks when you bought it.
You should always include your Tablet Serial number AND your IMEI number with EVERY communication. You will find this either on the Factory box, and also on the SIM/SD cover of the tablet.
Eventually, ATT will hopefully give you the unlock code. Each code is different and based on the IMEI number.
You may have to e-mail them several times. Always remember, BE POLITE in your mails. And go to a higher supervisor if needed. Hopefully they will understand the situation and give you the unlock code.
This method has worked for a few other people who bought the ATT/Rogers a501,but live in other countries.

I have a Sprint S6 Edge + that has been unlocked and I'm using it on a Tmobile network. Is there a way to load the stock Tmobile firmware on this phone to essentially make it a Tmobile phone instead of Sprint?
It is a stock SM-G928P, running stock Android 6.0.1

I am being very logical if you had bought tmobile in the first placr you would not face any issue because even if you succeed in flashing tmobile firmware on sprint phone[emoji23]

Oh, the time travel paradox. I haven't brushed up on my Robert Heinlein lately, but if I remember correctly, it was something like...... If I had bought a Tmobile phone in the first place, I wouldn't have this problem, but I didn't, so I must go back to a time where this Sprint phone does not exist in my current personal multiverse and instead I choose to buy a Tmobile phone thereby eliminating my need to find assistance in the form of a helpful answer to my question. But I have to assume that I'm never able to travel back in time where your answer would apply, otherwise I wouldn't be typing this message, because the problem would have solved itself before ever existing. Got it! Let me stuff some banana peels into my flux capacitor and see how quickly I can generate the required 1.21 Jigawatts.
In the meantime, any Non Marty McFly's that might be able to share any working knowledge of a solution?

Removing all jokes you can try to flash tmobile firmware and try on your sprint phone the phone theoretically should boot but since very few ppl use carrier much about sprint and tmobile bootloaders and modems are unknown so they are either similar or very different [emoji29] this is why many devs don't support carrier models of Samsung because of all this **** so all i or i am sure of it anyone would say is try and hope you can have basic functions working if that happens then if some bugs exist you can ask devs who by the way work in their free time to help you fix it
Primary suggestion is still sell sprint and buy tmobile phone i am actually serious
Or download g928t latest firmware from sammmobile flashing instructions are provided on download page download programs which they say are needed and see the video of how to install there is everything mentioned in detail but dont come complaining if phone does not boot

Thanks for the helpful suggestion. That's about what I was thinking. My biggest concern is that I flash the Tmobile rom, it doesn't work and I can't flash it back. If I was sure I could still flash back to stock Sprint as a last resort, I'd be more comfortable taking the chance. Admittedly, I was surprised that the phone would unlock for Tmobile in the first place. For the longest time it was either CDMA or GSM and not both, so this is a new one for me.

Chances of bricking device is real still suggestion loose bucks and buy a tmobile or dont buy a Samsung phone with carrier i am serious

It is fine with AT&T logo... Try flashing unlock file over your sprint carrier maybe it will help
