[Q] Which ROM are you using and why? - Acer Iconia A500

There are quite a few Iconia ROM's floating about, which all seem quite similar from the eyes of a newbie. I thought I'd start up a general discussion thread about the perceived merits of why you are using a particular ROM.
I've had my Iconia for a few weeks - I upgraded to 3.1, played with it for a few days, then went Minimalist 3.2.1 and have been using it ever since. It's based on the Xoom ROM
My thoughts:
* Generally feels quite snappy - I didn't notice a massive switch between the OTA 3.1 and this however
* 3.2 means there's the "zoom" button which is nice if I ever need it
* The stock Honeycomb clock is there which I prefer to Acer's Simi clone
* I have the occasional application crash - generally without a warning, I get plopped back to the desktop. This has happened across quite a few apps, mostly within the browser, and I lose all my tabs which is a bit irritating. Don't know if this the ROM or Honeycomb in general.
* Love the dropping of all the custom apps which are generally useless to me.
* Would like some customisation options since it looks and feels very vanilla but don't know if there's a lot in that way on the Iconia yet.
So what are you using? What do you like and why?

also a minimalist 3.2.1 user here. I've added a few things to my aresonal such as thumb board, ADW EX (as a launcher replacement) and a few tweaks like setcpu. Great tablet after removing the crap... but at least it isn't as bad as my phone started out.

my $0.02 USD
Stock Acer a500 rom - running 3.1 with richardtrip's custom kernel, rooted, crap Acer bloatware disabled, CPU set to 1.4 ghz via set CPU app and I am blown away. More responsive then most desktops/laptops I have seen.

I'm using taboonay 1.1. It is based off iconia stock rom 3.1. So far it is fast and smooth compared to stock. Dev removed most of the bloat. The only problem I have with it is the random fc I get in market when I check "my apps". I like running custom stock Roms because I like knowing all the features on my tablet works.

I'm liking LightSpeed, its definitely smooth running and i'm not having any video issues like i did in other roms i tried. It's fast without a OC kernel and all the bloatware was removed from the beginning.I'm able to install the honeyvillain game addon.Just an all around good rom.

I just switched to the Taboonay 1.1 with Richard's kernel from Virtuous Galaxy and I am very happy that I did. Altought VG is quite fast and has the touchwix UI there were problems with the youtube app (unable to seek) and also the sound was not Dolby. So far I am very happy with Taboonay 1.1.

I use the stock 3.1 a500 rom different kernel, btw its fun modding stock and adding the mods/tweaks that you like its also a great learning experience
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk

I'm running LightSpeed as well; my only gripe is that for some reason on this ROM I'm not able to install Facebook for Android. It won't even show in the Market!
My other main gripe about tablets revolves around the external SD card not being more intuitive; I can't see to find any settings to tell apps like Google Music to use the SD card for storage instead of the internal memory.

the best rom and i have tried theem all is wihout a doubt the thor galaxy rom with thor kker.nel 1.15. Itt is fast, support 3g modem and the browser is without ripping effect..... I hate that on other rom...dont forget to use the adw launcher ex...

People on here do not talk about that often but it is important to those of us music lovers. I always thought Dolby was mostly just marketing BS but there is a dramatic difference in the sound.
Taboonay 1.1 with Thor's kernel works great for me and since it is built on the stock rom it includes dolby.

I tried Virtuous Picasso and Virtuous Galaxy. Both were fast and I liked some of the apps that came with the Galaxy. However, they were both a little buggy. I had to reboot the Iconia a couple of times during the short period that I tested them.
I have been using Taboonay 1.1 for almost a month now. I don't remember having to reboot the device or anything fcing on me. My only complain (if you can call that), is the app selection that comes with the ROM. I don't see going to any other ROM anytime soon.

Currently using Honeycomb 3.2 stock from with Asus Netflix patch best benefit Dolby digital small loss 1.5 ghz overclocking. Also running minimalist 3.2 with Asus Netflix patch best feature overclocking and UI and video playback much smoother loss Dolby digital
Acer A500 3.2 AsusNetflix patch FTW

[Q] Stick with Tiamat, or do the 3.1 upgrade?

Have been very happy with Tiamat 1.4.0 since it lets me use my Bluetooth keyboard with no issues, and it did give SD Card support.
I gather if I do the 3.1 upgrade I lose the Tiamat kernel, and so may gain some things and lose others.
So, would you recommend the 3.1 upgrade anyway, or stick with Tiamat and 3.0 until there is a 3.1 compatible version of Tiamat?
Thanks!
3.1, it's worth it. Plus look in the dev section. I have my sd card working on 3.1.
Sent from my Thunderbolt using XDA Premium.
OK, I have done the deed. Will have to see if my Bluetooth keyboard problems reappear going back to stock or not.
Anything in particular I should look at to convince myself this was the right thing to do?
Thanks,
Ewan
Well other people have reported on the general forum that 3.1 actually does is worse on the keyboard than 3.01
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
I haven't installed 3.1 because I love the speed that overclocking gives me. For me, there doesn't seem to be an awful lot to gain from 3.1 worth giving that up.
I'm interested to read your opinion, since you were also on the fence about it.
Well, for me it gives me in stock the two main things I installed Tiamat for - Bluetooth keyboard that works, and SD card support. I hardly ever use the stock browser, so the changes there don't really affect me. Hopefully I will see some improvement in video playback.
FWIW...
I'd recommend going ahead with the update (which I think you already did, but I'll write this for future users who have the same question). The reason is because the whole system feels snappier and more responsive (to me anyway). Scrolling is MUCH smoother and feels more like my android phone, which I love. I'm still getting a bit of stuttering when playing back HD flash files, but I had that when I was overclocked to 1.5ghz too. Once the next version of the Tiamat kernel comes out for 3.1, and we'll be able to overclock, 3.1 will be far and away better than 3.0.1. These guys are normally pretty quick about coming up with new kernels. I'm kinda surprised we haven't seen a few already, but I'm sure they're working hard on it.
Either way, you're gonna have to upgrade eventually, so you might as well get it over with. That's basically the way I saw it.
Best of luck to you with whichever you decide.
I also recommend upgrading to 3.1. It's just so smooth that I don't even miss the overclocking on the hacked kernels. Also, two days with no FC's on the stock browser etc. Smooth HQ youtube videos, and no problem with BT keyboard either. Everything to gain and nothing to lose. 3.1 with SD support from BRD FTW!

Best rom for my iconia

Currently on the flashable .22 3.1. What in your opinion is the best rom for this device.

I just ordered this tab myself and I'm interested in opinions on the ROMs available. Are there many developers at this point?
so far now...
- Galaxy
- Picasso
- Xoom (3.2)
from the virtuous team
with kernel UNITY
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Honeyvillain (Stock Acer improved )
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taboonay (Stock Acer improved )

the best??? hummm should better try them before.
Ya I couldn't say which one is best either but I do love the functions on Virtuous Galaxy. Personally I'm going to wait a few more months or a year before I play with any ROM's -
Unless of course that Galaxy ROM gets perfected. I'm twitching for it.
I myself tried both Virtuous Galaxy and Virtuous Xoom and I have to say I really like the Xoom one better. It's smoother, and I experienced odd input lag on the Galaxy one. Both are however several notches better than the HC 3.0 by Acer!
just messin...
Just now messing with from mods on my iconia. Do the zoom or galaxy roms support the USB drive?

That's a bummer. Nothing about the Xoom version interests me.
Here's hoping the Galaxy version gets better *crosses fingers*
running stock 3.1
CWM installed and ready to go - but have not flashed any custom roms, as the system running stock 3.1 works great for my purposes. If this changes I will consider going the custom ROM route

Im using the xoom and usb is working I use the NTFS mount program and I am still able to sync up my 500 gig WD trough USB.
No problem with this rom for me. Wireless is working great wireless teather to my droid inc phone and everything else working so far. Just put this rom on today about 6 hours ago.

You say that now, but flashing is addictive. Once you realize what else your device is capable of, you will continue to modify it to fit your needs. My Galaxy Tab is far more than it was when I purchased it. I will continue to use it due to its voice capabilities.

I would say...
I tested every rom on XDA for A500
Xoom : no improvement, actually I felt like a downgrade rather than something else...not because a bad rom but maybe just because not fit to my need.
Galaxy: I love the UI, but.... feel like an overall slugggginess... the widget are maybe too much... I didn't checked the latest latest version so maybe it's improved... (the 5Mpx was not yet fixed...)
Picasso: Dunno... didn't see like a better things
Taboonay: this rom satisfied all my needs but lately maybe because of kernel... felt like some problem happening
ALL those rom have a common point I do not like it's the "automatic" 3G support... well I didn't buy my tablet to get 3G on it from a third part things or modified things... I just tether with my phone and it's really enough.
latelly I restocked my tabletS (both of them) one run the .40 and the other .38 well I am satisfied
maybe later I will return on custom rom
I rooted my tablet, that is at this moment fit my needs.
it all comes to your own personal preferences. I would encourage you to just try out a few and see what you like best. The virtuous team does do a very nice job with their roms though. I'm currently using virtuous zoom 3.2 but I do like the virtuous galaxy too but it needs a little work.
Honeyvillain (Stock Acer improved )
is best for me, more over, richardtrip is my favorite dev. since HTC Desire appeared.
I have a 3.1 that works and has least no. of FCs and odd things, comparing to stock rom by acer
My tab has a problem that it shut itself when in sleep mode , i would say 50% chance.
Tried most of the roms and no rom solve it 100%.
Now, Im with xoom3.2 ,,, so far so good (but just 3 hours ago)
Any idea???? Is it hardware or soft ware problem????
Of the ones I've tried:
Honeyvillan: was the best for me for a while - everything worked and was stable.
Virtuous_galaxy: I like the UI extensions, but external SD card could not be accessed via file manager. Keyboard didn't work, and I believe video camera didn't work well. Also exchange didn't work.
Virtuous Xoom: appears to be the best now. The things that need to work for me are:
cifs
exchange email
sd card access
video camera
gps
All these above things work. I did see one hard crash/reboot so far but seems basically stable. Its also overclockable, which Honeyvillan didn't seem to be.
The basic reason I like the Virtuous Xoom best is because HC 3.2 has pretty much fixed the orientation lag issue, where the UI wouldn't be as responsive if the tab is not in default orientation. I velcro it upside down on the dash in my car (for certain reasons).
The USB keyboard does not work, but I see there are instructions in the forum for getting that going. I actually don't need it very often anymore, thanks to the swiftkey X keyboard.

[Q] Best Rom and Kernal For Transformer

Ok so I know this is somewhat personal preference but I just got a transformer today and it is now rooted with recovery what is everybody's opinion on the best rom and kernal.
Thanks
It's kernel not kernal. Use revolver 0.2 with clemsyns kernel or the kernel that comes with the rom. Lookout for prime 1.6 when it comes out.

+1 for PRIME! ROM, lots of people use it so if you get problems with it you should get answers relatively quickly.
Revolver looks great but I'm waiting for the next version. Supposedly the volume is unbalanced and.... there was something else that made me decide to wait. They both were minor issues that should be included in the next update.
Also Prime 1.6 will be good.
I get SoD using Prime. Not so much while in standby but when coping from my internal to SD memory, which I do often. It locks up every time. Running his v2 kernel which helps it from getting the SoD over night.

Prime v1.5, I found the most stable. however certain apps (for me atleast) won't show up in the Marketplace. Not sure what the issue is, maybe something in build.props file.
However, using Clemsyn's OC Kernel is a pretty good combo with Prime v1.5.
I didn't have luck with Clemsyn's ROM due to Overclock issues, my Tegra 2 can't run at 1504 mhz. So it would get stuck in an infinite boot loop
But there is another rom I want to test, Revolver which is built off of Clemsyn's ROM so that might be a good one to test.
As for different kernel, the only one I have tried is Clemsyn's.
Clemsyn @ 1.4 very smooth no probs. rom, not sure i just used stock, rooted, inst titanium bkup, removed crap bloatware. all done its very good with high speed, LOOOOOOOOOOOONG battery almost 18hrs (with dock) now with videos ... still going I dont know how other roms are, but im more than happy with this one.
I have rooted every phone I ever had to gain additional features or functionality. But, I have not felt the need to do so on my TF. What functionality are people gaining from rooting and/or running alternative ROMs?
I use the netformer 1.5 kernel with prime 1.5 rom. Super stable for me.
Optional things I did:
I use the thrive boot animation, pcb theme (very sharp looking), and revert back to transformer launcher buttons as I don't like the Xoom ones very much. I also changed the system font to ubuntu. If you search XDA for this stuff you should find it quickly.
Good luck!

Same as you would on any other Android device . It depends on what you use your tablet for I guess. Perhaps there are some 'additional features' you feel the need to use on a phone but not on a tablet?

IMHO - Overclocking kernels help me out particularly when watching videos. Setting governors via apps like Setcpu help a lot with conserving battery life. Prime makes the transformer buttery smooth and eliminates some fluff that can bog down the system - plus some extra goodies like cifs, terminal, and spare parts. Additionally, you are able to create backups and use apps like titanium root.
Don't get me started on the customization portion of why rooting this device is crucial. Too many neat things you can do with a little bit of of research to talk about.
Hope this helped!

fastest rom ?

Hey i just got my tf yesterday and i would like to know which rom is the fastest
There is no fastest. Its all subject to what you are doing, how many apps you have and your perceptions. There is no source for hc so everyone is basically modifying the stock firmware. Try them all and see what works for you.
ah okay I forgot al about the source code^^ okay then I will give it a try.
Thanks for the info
Like frog said, there really isn't a "fastest rom." Even if we had the source, that doesn't matter. Speed of a rom is really perceived by the user. One rom may handle a lot of multitasking while another one opens apps in a flash. Based on how you use your tablet, the slow but really nice multitasking rom may feel faster to you than the one that opens apps quickly.
could you guys suggest me a rom?

get prime 1.9 and flash a clemsyn kernel on it
ARHD is nice. Really snappy, for me anyways. I find multitasking smoother on it than Prime. Haven't tried Prime 1.9 yet, but I'm running HD 1.1.0 with Clemsyn's kernel v12..(lol haven't updated)

I use Prime 1.9 and [Kernel] Clemsyn-Blades-CPAjuste-supercurio OC kernel for 3.2 elite ver 16
OC at 1.4 = smooth sailing..
Used prime 1.4, 1.7, 1.84, and now on 1.9 with clemson blades v.17a and it runs great. I suggest the clemsonblades kernel for the gpu OCing and voodoo support. Used Gnufabio 2.5 (i think) but flashing the clemson blades kernal made me lose the Honeycomb button bar and reflashing backups wouldn't fix it. Had to nvflash to fix it. But to be fair it might be rare. Think I only saw one other person report this.
Thought about android revolution because of more crapware taken out and integrated ad blocking, but don't want to superwipe and set everything up again. You might want to try though, since you're starting fresh. Think I've seen people using it with the Clemson Blades kernal v.17 just fine. Might have been v.17b though, without voodoo sound.
trouble charging
Also, one more reason to use clemson-blades is that people are experiencing a charging issue with (i think) all of the more recent versions of prime, android revolution, and gnufabio. Basically, charging don't work properly after a certain amount of uptime and only comes back with reboot.
clemson-blades v.17 fixes this by forcing usb charging.

Best Rom/Kernel?

Just picked up my acer today for 200 dollars new!! thank you craiglist! Came from xoom & transformer. I was just wondering what the best setup everyone is running with the iconia?
I think so far the best one I've tried is [ROM][15/09]Lightspeed_1.0.4[HC3.2] [Fixed Huawei, 3G, superuser, everything] although 3g doesn't work with huawei e1820.
I've also got mine today.
I wanted to know the main differences of using a custom rom for tablets please?

High speed with OC, more features with root and cus.kernel such as faster browser, better video performance, wifi problem fix...
Taboonay 2.0 is the most popular and most people tend to say its the best currently.
although all roms have their own unique benefits and 'best' is subject YMMV
I've tested almost all ROMs.
For me the HoneyVillian 1.1 (i did not test 1.2 yet) is the best one together with Richard's Kernel 3.4. The 1.2 as based on the posted 3.2 Stock ROM should be even better.
Everything just works and works fast.
With Taboonay i was issues with Mail Client after configuring exchange account - all the time Force Close. Additionally for me it was slower than HoneyVillian.
All ROMs not based on ACER Stock ROM you can forget. It will not work as it should - maybe it will be prettier, but some apps will not work at all, or you will get FC - because even if the tablets are very simillar in hardware - they are not the same - using different hardware sollutions.
true I agree, I prefer custom roms that are based on the stock A500 rom, I'm pretty sure vache will be basing the next taboonay on stock a500 3.2, so I'm just going to wait for that and try it out.
The only problem ive had is the known superuser incompatibility with taboonay 2.0 aside from that im surprised how well it works on my a500 given its based off the A501 rom.
if I had lots of problems i would have changed to something else ages ago. I havent tried a lot of the roms anyway, I picked taboonay based on its similarity to a stock rom and wanted 3.2 without waiting for the official a500 3.2 to be out
now that it's out it opens up more choice for me if i choose to change later on.
I tried today Taboonay 2.1 and HoneyVillian 1.2.
I don't know what is the reason but there even nothing to compare.
Taboonay on my Iconia is even slower than Stock ROM with 3.0 - and even if overclocked to 1400 !!!
HoneyVillian just works awesome.
Before both flashes - wiped everything so there should not be such a difference.
No idea - because as i see Taboonay is pretty popular and no one else is saying that it is so incredible slow. But on my Iconia it is. Even browsing the home screens looks creepy - slow and like the tablet would work with 300 Mhz.
What is for sure better in Taboonay - configuration directly after flash - there is done it in proper way - first WiFi then google account.
HoneyVillian has it still in the same way as the stock - first Google account and then networks - which doesn't really makes sense.
But this is nothing - the rest just works beautifull in HoneyVillian.
Both ROMs have the same kernels - Richard's V3.4
Honeyvillain 1.2
I have my iconia with honeyvillain right now, and i like that it's fast and long battery life. I also used to have taboonay 2.0 in my iconia, and i didn't notice any lag. It ran fast also on my iconia. But i liked more honeyvillain. And as far as i know i'm going to stay with honeyvillain 1.2.
taboonay 2.0 and richardtrip 3.4 are butter smooth and super fast. I love it.

Stock 3.1, cause I like everything to work and tired of costom problems.
I use rhe taboonay 2.1 and richardtrip 3.4
very good speed and good battery life, much better than stock.
Using Taboonay 2.1 with Thor Kernel 3.4
Stable, fast, good battery life. Prefer it over HV 1.2..
