how come gingerbreak doesnt work vzw play? trying to root without unlocking bootloader
It doesn't work on the vzw version cause they patched up the exploit before putting the phone out
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
Is there any way to root it?
I'm on 2.3.2, not 2.3.3 if it helps.
It's rootable but takes a bit of work. They're working on a more permanent solution.

Oh really? Can I see the thread?
You need to unlock the bootloader. After that, go to the development forum and read the R800x root thread.

You eventually gingerbreak or super one click will work
So all I have to do is unlock my bootloader, then root it with Gingerbreak or SOC? Or should I wait for a better alternative?

You should go read the thread on rooting the R800x instead of asking here.

Verizon fixed the Exploit that gingerbreak used before releasing the phone. There is however an active discussion going on over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098131
There are a few of us working on a possible bootloader unlock for the Verizon play. Also there are details of what we have tried to gain root and failed.

Hi, I'm going to root my brothers dx for him tomorrow, it's running the aforementioned firmware, so what options do I have to root it? Will gingerbreak work?
Thanks.

Seriously, it's stickied man.
You're going to have to SBF him to .340 first and then follow that thread.
I suggest backing up his apps with this https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackup&feature=search_result
first...but he'll lose all of his app data since he isn't currently rooted and can't use Titanium.
If you're super crafty and patient, maybe you can try using ADB to pull the data for him...and obviously push it back once he's up and running again.
Sorry, I sent this from my phone late last night, I haven't rooted a phone in a while..
I am a noob, what is ADB? I know the term, I just forgot..

Edit: also, if I do the method posted above where I downgrade to froyo, then manually upgrade to gingerbread, will I be rooted once I'm back on gingerbread?

My assumption is he has a new stock X fresh from VZ running 4.5.596... You can sbf back to froyo from an OTA? huh... news to me!
Sbfing is the equivalent of swinging a mighty ban hammer. (in response to the above)

I'm looking to root a droid X with gingerbread. All i really want to accomplish is to be able to use the hotspot for free and also to get rid of adds and bloatware. Is there a generic prosess to use. I'd like for it to have the same look and feel as before.
Any advice would be helpful.
thank you

Is rooting really needed for the kf? I am not super computer suave, but I did root my X10a. What I really want to know is will I need to root to be happy with the kf?

If you want the android market you will want to root it. But with burrito root it's pretty easy.
Thanks
I was looking at some of the videos and I just get nervous about bricking it. I will give it a shot when I pick one up.
It's not "needed" but it totally turns into a full Android tablet, once you put CyanogenMod on it that is. It's great.
No need to be nervous. Just follow the guides that are in the Development section and with some patience, everything will go smooth.
I will try it out when I get it.
Who will unbrick it when things go wrong lol

If I don't get the CM7 rom will the OTA updates from Amazon kill my root access and Google Android Market?

I've heard just about ANY OTA updates kills root access. So if I were you I would totally not take anything from Amazon after rooting and putting CM on it.
Edit: if you don't put CM on it and stick to stock Fire, then to answer your question, yes it will probably kill root access. All depends on what the OTA consists of.
I am really just wanting the Google Android Market. Will the OTA updates kill the market along with root access? I couldn't find where it said that it killed the market also.

I am not so sure on that one, I'm sorry. I would think Stock Fire software wouldn't play nice with Android Market installed as well, I could be wrong, not sure.

Not sure if the RZR link is needed/or a mistake. Thread is closed http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/t...r-locked-devices-on-91878/page-21#entry395007
because of the xda / hidden link that follows.
