First Kal El is Asus Transformer 2 - Eee Pad Transformer General

Just saw this article and figured you guys would be interested!

I hope the dock works both ways, because I'll definitely be getting one (instead of *maybe*).

for a second there it sounded like you picked up your TF 3, weeks ago before returning back to 2011 from 2012, so you can use it longer before the world blows up.

Thats what the hispanic guy said at the back of the truck. Seemed Legit

As I just brought mine last week. What should I do?

Nothing.
The device you have does what you bought it for I assume, so why worry?

Bought mine 4 weeks ago... and it is almost outdated? Damn! Can't keep up with this!

TF 2 could be buggy as **** so hang on to the one that works well. That's my rational behind keeping the one that i just bought a few days. That and I sell things on craigslist often.

Hopefully the new TF wont be as poorly produced as the original one.

Yeah, god forbid a mass produced piece of technology produced over seas have any flaws just like every other piece of technological hardware out currently. We Americans want what we pay for gosh darnit!

Nice. Just another reason for me to not go get akeyboard dock. If it doesn't work with the TF 2, I'll be pissed.
It's been said earlier that it will be the same price as the OG Transformer. Hopefully that $399 price tag stays true. I think that if it is true, Asus should have a trade-in program, we give them our TF1, they give us the TF2. Am I right or what?

Maybe in a dream world. That would be beneficial for us, but no one else. It would raise the price for everyone else since they don't make much cash off it any way.
I was just going to gift my TF when the TF2 comes out.
The keyboard not working would be sad because they said it should continue to work with the TF line. However I bought the TF because I wanted it. If they replace everything, well, that's how this works isn't it? I will probably just whine until I can afford to buy a whole new set up and give the old one to my sister.

I'm pretty happy with my current TF. I'll let the TF2 come out and bugs be worked out before I hop on that train.

Will definitely wait to purchase another tablet. The TF is my very first tablet so its been a learning experience. This forum has also taught me plenty.
Not sure if Asus is my next buy, but whatever i choose, i will do so only if it has great video playback, netflix, great Quality ASsurance, etc.
Plus, i wont be first time adopter again..
Ill practice some patience next time.lol

Pretty happy with the TF, probably won't upgrade until Fall of 2012-2013. By then the TF3 will be out haha

Don't worry, and don't hurry!
There is a reason that all current android pads are based on the Nvidia chipset, Google made honeycomb on the Xoom as reference platform.
This will be different next year.. This time Texas Instruments will be google's partner. The first tablets will come Q1\Q2 2012...
Ok, Tegra3 will outperform the Tegra2 by far ...
but the advantages of a TI tablet will probably be way better than that , think of features and compatibility with upcoming android version(s)
This is why Nvidia is rushing with the tegra3 platform! They want to be first...
It's not smart , considering all the stores have tons of tegra2 devices in stock, they won't be sellable for a decent price within a few months. (tegra3 devices will be sold for the same price as current tegra2 devices)
Anyways, some serious price-wars next year... i will wait for the TI vs Nvidia rivalry next year
Let them fight first, we will win the battle (cheap hardware! )
http://tabletroms.com/index.php/2011/08/05/google-and-texas-instruments-partners-for-ics/

Asus said the dock would work with future version somewhere. i cant remember where exactly but it was a question when someone asked them when they first released it

One thing is certain..
dont buy HP touchpad.. (well..actually as a media only device at cheap price....hmmmm)

[Q] Should I keep my Galaxy Tab?

Hey there!
First post since making my account close to two years ago
I just recently purchased a Galaxy Tab through Rogers w/o a contract. It was pretty much a impulse buy. After going on here and reading what I could do to the device, I caught glimpse of some threads saying to hold off for the Xoom and some other tablets that are coming out.
I own a iPhone4, Macbook Pro (13") and a Alienware M17x (17").
The thing I love most about the Galaxy Tab is the form factor. I find the size comfortable. Reading about the new tablets with dual core processors and 10" + screens is exciting tho. Currently in Canada the Tab's are not cheap I paid $755 including taxes. I do have 15 days to return the Tab.
Should I return it and wait for something new? or do you think if or when honeycomb is ported over it will still be able to compete with the xoom or some of the newer tablets of 2011.
Thanks! Sorry for the long post, thought I'd make it a good one to break my XDA cherry
-Geby.
prices will drop. return it.
yeah, return it and wait for the next new shiny thing to be released, but then hang on because the next even more shiny and even newer thing will be on the horizon so best wait for that. Oh, don't buy that version because it will be out of date when the next new bit of kit comes along.
Enjoy what you have, so if it's out of date in 18 months sell it then and buy something newer.
I reckon that my 'tech fund' for phones etc costs me about £10 a week - money well spent.
Just for the record, there is no way I'd part with my Tab or my X10
keep it, it's always best to buy "newer" units after 6 months since its release. (better prices, no more bugs, updated firmwares etc)
dont even think twice take it back i just got 2 of them 3 days ago and find it to get boring seeing that it does not work as good as it should esp iu had 750 in 2 and decided to f it there will be the tab 2 in june plus the moto xoom

$755??? WTF!!! Return it, drive across the border and buy one for $300
Yeah- at that price I'd take it back and scout around for a cheaper one. If you don't find it in a month or so then wait for the next version.
You can always argue that the next one will be better, but with an upgrade cycle now for most phone-tablets-electronic devices of about 6 months you have to draw the line somewhere and get something. Otherwise you will be like the couple that keeps putting off having a child until they can afford it, or have the time for it. It never happens!
Or, if you wait to long to make up your mind and the return period runs out you can always send it to me. I could use a nice gift right about now
I agree, got mine at Tmo about 3 weeks ago for $350.00 on contract; went back to the store tdy and got $. 50 back on my ccard and $ 50 mail back rebate: = $ 250.00 total cost I figured will use it for 6 to 9 months and by then the prices of the new models will be way better than at launching...
I bought one today for $533 new from Best Buy. I didn't sign up for a plan cause I have free hotspot on my EVO, so it doesn't make sense to pay Sprint $30 a month for what I have free. I've connected it to my Evo and it works great....BUT I am wondering if I should have waited on the tab 2 or spend a little more and get the Xoom.
Hey guys and gals. The money wasnt a huge issue with buying the tab. The main thing was if i should wait a month for something better. Looking on ebay i see that you guys are dead on about the prices. Which carriers are compatible with my rogers 3G?

[Q] Will this be obsolete in 6 months to a year?

I've been hearing rumors that tablets in 6 months to a year will make this tablet obsolete. Apparently tablets will be coming out soon with almost twice the processing speed as this currently has, is that true? I have to make a decision on a tablet to buy that will last me at least 2 years before I can buy another one, do you all think that this will last that long? Should I wait another 6 months and buy a better tablet when they start rolling out? I know the developers will keep this going, but like with my HTC Hero, as soon as the next big thing came out, everybody left that device in the dust.
It's a common joke in the tech world to say that by the time you buy your device it's obsolete.
Sadly, it's true. Qualcomm already announced some beastly processors at CES this year, but said they won't show up in devices until 2012. So that's already going to make your device obsolete within a year or so.
I'd say find a device you like now, and buy it. After you buy it be sure to look the other way as other devices get announced.
Also, don't buy into Best Buy's Buyback program, it's a ripoff. You have to sell back within 6 months, and can only get at most 50% of your purchase price back.

Are you ****ting on me? No really I think it smells funny in here. Of course it will be
Computers and similar products like tablets and smartphones follow the same rule. The motorola Xooms performance will be outshadowed in a year, just like the Evo's performance is already outshadowed by the latest phones coming out.
To expect a technology product of this type to be relevant a year later is not gonna happen lol.

The quadcores will be coming out (and the IPAD 3 is rumored to come out) at the beginning of next year.
The end of this year, that quadcores will be SAMPLING - meaning prototype devices will be shown, with release schedules in the beginning of the next year around this time.
With any sort of device, you are looking at a 6 month doubling time in technology. Recently that has been speeding up.
To be fair, the google nexus one (also a flagship) still gets regular updates first - the Moto xoom should be similar.
After one year, quadcores will come out - but your tegra 2 will still be usable.
its obsolete already....save ur money...don't buy anything...
Depending on what you mean by obsolete.
As with Android phones, there are severe competition within the Android platform. All big manufacturers refresh their flagship models every few months to take advantage of newer faster better components. If you want to always have to top of the line, the highest-spec Honeycomb tablet, the Xoom may not last for long. It's already been said that the Samsung one may have a better screen and the LG one does 3D... and how knows how many more Honeycomb tablets will be announced at CTIA by the end of this month.
But if you are considering getting a high-end tablet to won't be obsolete in the sense of not getting updates, or the hardware can't keep up with the softwares. You don't really have to worry, for at least a year or more. Your experience with it will only get better as Honeycomb platform gets more mature, for the next year at least.
This is always the case with Android. The faster, nicer looking, longer lasting device with the latest firmware and the newer manufacturer technology is always right around the corner.
Ultimately this is why I chose not to subsidize with a 24 month ($480 dollar + tax) contract.

I would like to introduce you to Moore's Law.
Moore's law describes a long-term trend in the history of computing hardware. The quantity of transistors that can be placed inexpensively on an integrated circuit has doubled approximately every two years. The trend has continued for more than half a century and is not expected to stop until 2015 or 2020 or later.

What he said.
Obsolete is such a funny word. People interchange it with top of the line. There will be some games that come out in a year that won't look as good on the Xoom. They'll probably be/are tablets that are better able to decode video. But the Xoom won't tell stories of processing 4 times harder in the snow for a while.
Disregard.
Well, it wont be complete obsolete but NVIDIA already announced that their new quad core processors will be out on tablets by August of 2011. So, thats twice the performance the xoom has now. I'm expecting a Xoom 2 of some kind. I would wait honestly. thats what imma do.

Contract is for a data plan. You can always buy another off contract (full price) and switch them out.
This is something thats frustrating me aswell. £500 is alot of money these days, especially with cost of living increasing, the price of rice etc.
So you kinda want to get a good few years use out of it. And not have to worry about upgrading within 12 months.
And likewise expect adequate support and updates as quickly as possible without feeling abandoned.

It won't be obsolete but it won't be top of the line anymore. Really, you should buy what makes you happy now, skip the next generation of tablets, and then refresh with whatever 3rd gen comes out in a year or so.
You'd be broke if you tried to keep up with the latest technology. Unless you have that much disposable income...

Yeah but if you have that attitude you'll be waiting forever. When the iPad came out I wanted to wait because although it's a great product, I don't like Apple's ethos. When the cheap aPad type tablets came out I wanted to wait because they're a bit dodgy build wise. When the Galaxy Tab came out I wanted to wait because I'm not a fan of the 7 inch form factor. Now the Xoom is out and I'm supposed to wait again, for another what 5/6 months because there MAY be a quad core tab out before the end of the year? No. The Xoom has everything I was waiting for, a proper tablet OS, open ethos (I was dreading an unlockable bootloader), good build quality and 10 inch form factor. It's what I've been waiting for. I'll be damned if I'm going to wait again just for a performance boost that I'm not even sure it needs right now.
Anyway, when the quad cores are out there will be another reason to wait. I can imagine it now. "Oh you're going to buy that quad tab are you? Why don't you wait until Icecream is out next Jan, then you'll be able to have glasses free 3D." Or some such other benefit for waiting. Nah, I'm done waiting, I'm jumping on the tablet train now.

Completely agree with you. There is finally a quality tablet out there and thats why I picked it up. I'm sure this is plenty fast enough, and you'll always be waiting for something better.
Just pick a comfortable one and stop evaluating new ones, but treat them as candidate for 2 years later.
That's why having a 2-year contract helps sometimes. It help to set the mentality right.
Sometimes it sounds like, to be married or to be single and availe for better girlfriend/boyfriend ,
which one is better?
Just in this case, the contract is just 2-year. The inappropriate analogy is life-time (or at least hopefully for many's cases)
I think the reason the xoom will not become obsolete as quickly as other tablets do is due to the software, not the hardware. I owned an htc hero and saw the nexus 1 get multitudes of update and my poor hero get only 2. The xoom is much like the nexus 1. Even though the hardware will not be the latest and the greatest, your software will always be up to date. Something you may not see with the LG device (due to 3D) or the Samsung device (due to Samsung being Samsung).
Just something to consider.

[Completely off topic] HP Touchpad is selling for $99 16gb and $149 32gb

In case you aren't paying attention to the interwebs, the HP touchpad is on clearance sale right now. I got two 16gb. Hope a dev gets Android running on this!

(Read the wiki under the first post. You need to create an EPP or Academic account).
I'll be at Best buy at 10am.
I walked into Staples here in Vancouver after work today to see if they had the 10.1 in stock yet (they'll have it for sale on Monday, the Samsung rep was just leaving). Walked out with a 32Gb Touchpad.
It's mostly crap compared to my 10.1. Seriously cheesy engineering, cheap feeling and heavy. Really heavy, my 10.1 in the Samsung Bookcase cover is far lighter than a naked Touchpad. Display isn't the best either.
That said, webOS has some neat features, I like the way multi-tasking is handled, the browser isn't bad, and sound quality playing media files doesn't suck either.
I'll either give it away or use it for my bathtub and motorcycle camping trip tablet.
Does it have GPS?
I've always been a fan of webOS and it's pretty sad to see it ruined
im thinking of loading her up with video and mounting it next to the bed or toilet
so much potential...so much idiocy at upper management...
You can get a 32gig Xoom for $399 on 1saleaday.com right now. I'd rather have that than WebOS obsolete stuff.

I've already got a 10.1 and a Tab 7 and a Nook Color...Android tablets are pretty well covered.
There's a few really neat things about webOS. Tell you what, if the Touchpad had slimmer, sexier hardware like the 10.1 or the iPad2, and didn't use an old and busted Snapdragon chipset, it would have put a dent in the market. Frankly, it beats the pants off of Honeycomb's half-assed interface as far as mass-market appeal goes (HC is still too "confusing" for the mass market). Don't get me wrong, I love Android, but it's not "there" yet for mass-market consumer tablets. WebOS was much closer to being "there".
Hell, if it were even as well-built as the Xoom, it would have done much better.
Shame they didn't go that route, these are upscale devices, nobody wants cheap plastics at that price point (talking to you too, Acer, Toshiba, Lenovo, and even you too, Asus).
What's even sadder is that HP knows how to make slim and sexy when they put their mind to it, look at the Envy line of laptops.
Heh. I will also probably be down at the local Best Buy tomorrow right at 9AM. I'm a sucker for a bargain. If they let the accessories go for pennies on the dollar that would be even better.
I was thinking they wouldn't slash the price so quickly just yet, but I suppose they just want this thing to die as quickly as possible.

You do realize it does all the basic tablet stuff just fine, and there's a fair collection of applications for it as well...it's not like it'll be non-functional, just somewhat orphaned.
And with the entire nearly 1 million unit inventory likely to be sold and in the hands of consumers soon, there's going to be some (if not a good bit) of 3rd party development, not to mention a fairly decent mod/dev community already.
It seems that they were pulled from the shelves. None available locally in Houston. Alas. It would have been nice to have a spare tablet.

BB asked HP to buy back the stock. This happened before HP kills off the webOS. Stores like Walmart is/was selling TouchPad for $99/$149 today and basically sold out everywhere.

Is the Xoom really worth buying right now? I love the sound from the unit but...

The unit itself has been on the market since February and its had its shortcomings...
It seems whenever I go to the store to play with tablets they all have their faults...however, the Xoom just feels like a real slate (great build quality)
My gf got me a Toshiba Thrive for my birthday. I didnt do any research before (testing them out in person) and I was really unimpressed with the build quality so we returned it.
Asus Transformer has great screen and decent build quality, but the sound is TERRIBLE. The IdeaPad was pretty nice as well - but the display was dimmer then the Xoom and its build quality was so so (lots of flex in a tablet - no go for me)
My real struggle is that the Xoom is still $499. It really is worth more like $449 and at that price I would get one.
Thoughts? Opinions? Please share.
You get what you pay for. If you want an android tablet, the xoom is still the standard. If you can wait until the fall there should be more options.
Shop around. They are turning up for $399 from time to time in some places.

Yes, for my money, it's also the best tech investment I've made in years.
Thanks for the replies so far guys!
Ultimately these tablets will always be getting better - like cell phones.
But after a year or two im sure I can get something else if I really wanted it. At work I have an IPad 2 just for document purposes and display presentations and I dont like it at all.
Just wanted to see where everyone stands and if they are happy with the purchase...you do get what you pay for and the Xoom seems to have fantastic build quality with no flex.
I paid $399 for mine and I love it. I would deffinetly consider worth it for another $100 if you cant find it for that. I love it more than any device I own, including my phone. I even have my texts forwarded via bluetooth to my Xoom and use it for texting. I'm a student working part time minimum wage retail job so I don't have much money, yet I still don't regret dishing out the $400 for it.
Cheers!
I picked mine up for $399 refurbished from woot and I love it. As others have mentioned, there have been a few places to have them new for that price, but I would definitely be willing to pay the extra $100 if there's not a place to find it for $400. I was always a little skeptical about how useful a tablet could be but the techie in me took over and I kind of impulse bought it when it showed up on woot. I have to say that I'm very glad I made the purchase. I've been using it a lot more than I anticipated and I love it. I prefer the design and feel of the Xoom more than the other available tablets and from what I've seen, it has the best development so far. Though it's only been about 1 month or 2, I'd still pick the Xoom over any other tablet available.
The biggest question would come down to whether or not you think you'd use a tablet. If you think you'd use it, then I'd definitely recommend it, even at the $500 price tag.
Still you can get one on ebay for like 250-300 if you don't want to pay 400-500$.

i got mine 10 days ago from amazon for $429, a new wifi one, not used or refurbished...plenty are available for $440-$450...3g models r a lil higher...+$50-$60...but ask urself do you realy need a 3g model...i personally dont mis it...i hav a dell streak 5 as a phone n do wifi tethering wen i need to...i got a belkin slim folio, zagg shield n alupen stylus from amazon itself...altogether cost me about $495...i consider it to b a snag....m in india, n here the xooms market price is still $700 so i got a steal...my fiance's in the US rite now so i just asked her to get me one... seriously i promise you, you wont regret it...its still the best... just go with xda n no galaxy tabs 10.1 or otherwise or even ipad2 comes close to it... i'm a happy camper...
What I also forgot to mention...
My GF bought me a Thrive and we returned it. Build quality was subpar - not stylish nor ergonomic at all.
NO Development community, although the tablet is new and that is to be expected.
Xoom seems to have custom ROMS and Kernels - although Im more of a purist anyway (AOSP on Phone) So I would probably be more interested in Kernel Dev than anything else.
I paid 750 for mine when it first came out. I'm happy with my purchase. Custom kernals and mods make it even better...and yeah,I could've waited and paid less...what's the fun in that?
I picked up a Xoom from Newegg last Thursday and I must say this thing is awesome. Newegg is currently selling them for $479 with free shipping and a $40 Newegg giftcard.

Im gonna buy a xoom I just cant decide on if I should get the wifi only or with the 3g ?
I thought it would be good to have just incase im in a area with no wifi
PS I was at Best Buy and there was a older lady playing with the tablets and got so frustrated and tossed her hands up in the air and said screw this I cant figure these things out
yes its worth it.
i started with a gtablet just to see if i would use it. wound up using it more than my desktop or notebook. i used the gtab for about 3-4 months
the screen on the gtablet is horrible. so i decided to buy a hc tablet with a better screen. my first choice was the acer iconia onsale at target. after 2 swapouts due to faulty hardware i bit the bullet and got the xoom. that was a week ago.
it blows any other tablet i tried out the water. i so do not regret it.

If you have an android phone you may be able to bluetooth tether it to your xoom.
If you google "xoom tether droid" there's a how to several results down from androidcentral (since I can't link)
Android phones with Gingerbread installed support WiFi Hotspot tethering. You can turn your phone in an access point for your Xoom tablet.

lol I actually did , she couldn't get the keyboard to pop up, I dunno if she bought the xoom, but last year I helped a lady buy a Toshiba laptop and I dont even work at best buy
don't think the sales man was happy I talked her out of having the geek squad making her back up disks for a extra 75 bucks ... I thought that was ridiculous of best buy to rip people off like that so i wrote down the instructions for her on how to do it her self for nothing lol

FYI, TF+dock=$399

Wow! Think suppliers are attempting to clear current inventory for possible TF2? Or at least Christmas shopping?
Wow that's an even better deal than when Staples had their $100 off coupon. The $199 Kindle Fire is going to beat up the prices on every tablet.

I'm still convinced the TF 2 isn't that near by. If anything, this sale is a response to the kindle fire.
Why do I think this? Because I heard about the TF a whole year before it finally came out. And back then the rumor was the TF would arrive any day now. Yup, any minute, actually. Well, that any day turned into a whole year.
I'm just not convinced it would take them less than 5 months between the time the tegra 3 is released and when asus could ship in volume devices equipped with the tegra 3.
Transformer $399. Dock $149. $549.00
Asus Slider $479.00
So....

I'm a little bitter at Nvidia as well for crying wolf too, but Tegra 2 was there first Android chip. There were a few non-honeycomb tablets that came out before Zoom (Elocity A7 & ViewSonic). I think Nvidia was late on hardware and blundered on the Tegra 2 by not being ready for honeycomb. I think they were originally targeting 2.2. Hopefully, they have learned from both mistakes.
I'm on the sidelines for the moment. My wife thinks she wants some sort of tablet and the Fire is an option. There are a ton of good looking gingerbread tablets coming soon (I'm assuming fire is gingerbread under the covers as well) in $200ish. I'm liking the Lenovo A7 from a specs standpoint. The Arnova G2 10" might be nice too.
Anyway, benchmarks from the TF201 have been seen. So it exists in some form.
I have a Nook Color running CM7 nightlies.
I ordered a Transformer from Target when they had them for $399 but my order 'got lost in the system', sigh.
I saw this deal and jumped on it.
I doubt that Target will have any inventory to even honor my order. They issued a UPS tracking label but UPS has yet to receive the package and it has been several days. They are sold out so I doubt I ever get that one hence the order with Newegg.
I can't wait to get my hands on this device.
I wonder if we will be able to root this one?

Yes, and it's a valid point. I'm sure Asus has figured it out that $550 for the Transformer+keyboard dock is hard to justify when they're selling the Slider for $479. Plus, we know that Asus must be making some nice margins with the dock at $149. Couple that with the inevitable decrease in component costs for the TF, and suddenly it's probably quite feasible for Asus to drop the price for both and still make a decent margin.
I picked up this deal today. The gf wanted a tablet for school, so I dug around a bit and almost bought it on Amazon for $400 without the dock.

I have picked one up on this deal, but wonder if I would be able to root this or not? I wonder if I am going to get with serial number B70 from NewEgg?
I wonder if all of the new Asus TF have locked bootloader which prevents them from rooting?
If I can't root, it is deal broker for me, and I am not sure if Newegg will take it back or not?
Goddamn, this is frickin' awesome (but heartbreaking..). Anyway, if I didn't have one, I'd totally buy this. I don't think root capability would affect my decision, as the stock version is pretty awesome already. Pre-Netflix, I would have needed the root, but now.. >_>
Just ordered one.... very very legit deal.
I found the sale by accident... there was some ASUS reps on MSU's campus for the Sparty LAN Party... if they read this you guys sold me on it. I loved playing with the demo unit

I was afraid of this, but I went ahead and bought it because it's such a great deal. If anything, you can resell the TF and dock on ebay and still come out good. I think I'll be happy with the stock ROM for now anyways.
But, newegg, by some miracle, could have some older stock of the TF and some of us could get lucky...Here's to wishful thinking
Just because it's not rootable now, doesn't mean it won't be rootable later. But it could take a long time.

I kind of thought the sale might have to do with demand for the dock. The TFs have been relatively hard to find, but New egg's stock indicator was showing 9999+ of the dock last night.
Anyway, this deal was a perfect storm for me. I've been shopping around for a while, waiting to see what was coming out and at what price points. Skype was a big want for me, and having heard it works reasonably well with the new update, and then finding the free keyboard deal put me over the top.
