I have been trying to get my work email set up on my phone. My company only supports the bb phones that they provide for certain employees. So, I am on my own to find a solution. I do have access to check my email via OWA and have been able to do so on my phone using Opera. I have read several places that I should be able to use the OWA credentials to set my email up using the default email client. But, I can't get it working. It allows me to complete the set-up without issue. But, when I try to send/receive it gives me connection error. Based on what I have read if I can login via my mobile browser I should be able to connect using the default client (i.e. IT has allowed mobile access) I am going to post what I did during the setup to see if you guys can identify what I may be doing wrong.
Domain/username: I put the username I use to login to OWA.
Password: my password
SSL is checked
Email adress: my email address
Server name: url for OWA, with https:// taken off. The address is webmail.mycompany.com
When I hit "next" it gives me an error and asks me if want to turn disable certificate verification, I hit "yes"
It then goes to the next screen which says "Success!" at the top. Then I hit "done"and setup should be complete.
But, when I go to that email and try to refresh, it says connection er
Anyone have any ideas?
Have you tried other email apps from the market? I use K-9 mail and it has been solid for IMAP. I know it supports other email systems too.

I tried one (might have been k9) and didn't have any luck. I was hoping someone had experience with a specific app. I tried Googling it, but all I could find was people recommending touchdown.

I have an xda2 and was always able to collect my email from our Windows SBS2000 exchange server using VPN. Now we have upgraded to Windows SBS server 2003 we cannot get mail.
We are able to log onto the VPN.
We can even use the terminal services and see the server screen, but we cannot download mail.
If we try to get mail we get the following message:-
"Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and your e-mail account settings are correct . Then, try to download messages again"
The email settings we are using are the same as those that worked with SBS2000 server.
Can anyone help please

From what you wrote I have gotten this...
1. Using VPN to connect to work network.
2. You can access resources on work network, proving the VPN is working.
Now, how are you connecting to get your mail? POP, Exchange Mobile???
I am going to assume you have a reason for not just using Exchange Mobile via Internet, such as don't want external access to Exchange box etc. etc.
sbs2003 mail access
I am using pop3 to access.
This was the way I accessed with SBS2000 with no problems.
The settings of my XDA2 are:
email address: [email protected]
user name: [email protected]l
password: mypassword
account type: pop3
incoming mail: servername
outgoing mail: servername
When I ask it to get mail GPRS is loaded and then VPN is loaded
then I get "connecting" then after a period I get the above error message.
If I leave the email prog and go to Terminal Service I connect and see my login and I can log in.

pop3 isnt enabled by default in sbs 2003, check settings in exchange admin and in services to make sure youve got the pop3 service running

Thanks for your help. Pop3 was not started, and WILL NOT START I do not know why. It says look in the Event viwer but no errors appear there.
I have started Imap and that has worked and I am receiving my mail. Thanks for your help.

PS in your first email you refer to Exchange mobile via the internet.
Isv this a big deal to setup and what are the advantages.

I had it working pretty much straight away, OMA is another thing. Ultimately, we moved on from Exchange Mobile as it didn't offer real-time push capability (unless using SMS).
We now use Pylon Anywhere and couldn't be happier. Not only does it do everything you want, it only costs $654 US for five users. It works with Pocket PC, Palm and Symbian (amongst others) based devices.

I was able to access my Gmail on XDA II. I now have an XDA IIs with 2003 se. I used the same parameters as on the XDA II 1.72 but I am unable to access my gmail. It seems to log on but stops in the downloading process.
Sorry, but I just realized that the problem I was having with my gmail account was not due to using 2003 se but because apparently (I don't know how) the settings on my gmail account had changed.

Update: Using Gmail from Pocket PCs
Earlier I had written here about how Google has started providing POP access for their Gmail email service. This week my account was enabled for POP access, and since then I had been trying to get it working with my Pocket PC. My efforts had been stymied by an error stating that email could not be downloaded to my mobile device. Today thanks to some assistance from Ed Hansberry got it to work. The trick is to enable POP only for new mail rather than for all mail.
If you have a Gmail account and want to access it using your Pocket PC, here is the information that you need:
Your userid and password is the same as what you use to access Gmail via a web browser
The incoming mail server name is pop.gmail.com
The outgoing mail server name is smtp.gmail.com
You need to configure the account so that the Outgoing e-mail server requires authentication
The account also requires an SSL connection
If you read Google's instructions for setting up an account you will notice that they specify port numbers for the incoming and outgoing mail servers. The numbers they provide are the standard port numbers for SSL access, so all you need to do is configure the Pocket PC account to use SSL.
You specify the authentication and SSL connection information on the 2nd account options screen. To access that screen tap Options on the fourth E-mail Setup screen and tap Next to display the Options (2/3) screen.
Since Gmail is free and provides 1 GB of online storage for email, it is a very useful email service. What makes it even better for Pocket PC users is that it requires SSL, which encrypts all your email as it travels between your Pocket PC and Gmail's servers. Keep in mind that when you use regular email servers that don't use SSL via a wireless connection, your email is floating through the airwaves in clear text. That means that anyone with the ability to capture wireless traffic can see the contents of your email. I highly recommend that since most people access email via wireless connections today, they use some form of encryption, whether that is provided by VPN or SSL.
I have done a search on this site and HOFO and cant seem to come to a solution. I'm about to go crazy.
I know my company uses Microsoft Exchange. I also have webmail access for my email as well as VPN access.
At this point, I'm unsure what to do with all of the info. I was hoping some of you could help me out. it's pretty easy.
*IF* your company has an Outlook Web Access (OWA) Email Server setup so that you can access webmail from the net, you should be able to setup your outlook/exchange email as well.
I bought my 8125 a few nights ago - and while sitting in the store, entered my OWA info and, boom, had my contacts, email, etc. within a few minutes.
Open ActiveSync on your device and click on menu/configure server.
enter your server email address - it should be in the format of mail.doman.com. so, for example, it could look like one of the following:
mail.xda-developers.com
inetmail.yourcompany.com
The point is it will use the same web address that you use for webmail from outside the company. If you use https://mail.xda-developers.com to gain access to your OWA, you'll use mail.xda-developers.com as your server address. You'll likely need to select the SSL connection.
Hit next.
Your use name is your Active Directory user name. The password is your corporate password; and the domain is your AD domain.
You may typically know your user credentials as domain\user name, yet you do need to keep the separate on this screen. Enter user name, passowrd, and domain. Click on the save passwork box.
Hit next. Select your preferences and hit finish.
that's it. you're done.

The key question is which version of Exchange is being used, and what has been exposed to the Internet.
Browsing to Outlook Web Access is the usual clue. Exchange 2003 OWA looks very different from the previous versions - it is very similar to Outlook.
First thing I would try is OMA - Outlook Mobile Access. You can try it from a desktop before you start playing around with your handheld.

You should get a prompt with username and password.
Enter your username in the format of domain\username and then your regular domain password.
You should then get a list of options in plain text. You can now read your email etc.
Move over to your handheld and enter the same URL and the same thing should happen.
If that doesn't work then you will have to speak to your Exchange administrators to see whether the options have been enabled. There are a number that aren't enabled by default which can stop OMA working.
As Exchange Active Sync works through the OMA virtual directory, if OMA doesn't work then I would be surprised is EAS works.
Exchange ActiveSync setup is as previously posted - but without support enabled on the server, it will never work.

The best bet is for you to call your help desk. They may not know but they could probably open a ticket to the Exchage team and you will get a correct answer from them.
There are many different ways to expose the Exchange Front End server to the internet that just guessing will drive you crazy. Some companies expose the whole exchange web directories and other only expose OWA
With all the Firewall Settings Web Proxies and ISA configurations out there it will be hard to tell if you can use Active Sync.
URLs follow this method of connecting to the different IIS Web inerfaces of Exchange
mycompany.domain.com/exchange = OWA
mycompany.domain.com/OMA = WAP based OWA
mycompany.domain.com/ActiveSync = is for ActiveSync
So they have to expose ActiveSync to allow you to use it.

Hi all, i have a GE account email and i would like to sync it with my phone. I kept getting the "unable to connect" message when i tried with the "email" app. Does anyone knows of any app that could allow this to happen? I ask the IT guy at work and he told me that usually Blackberry has an app to allow this to happen.

yes, go to apps -- choose the Email icon. Then it will ask you to setup new email account, after you put email address and password, click on manually manage to provide info such as pop3, exchange, etc. You will have to do it sitting to ur IT guys so you can ask him how to fill out the settings.
Are you able to use Outlook web access at your job?. If so, try that address as your mail server in the email app. Also, make sure you put your login domain in with your user name, like mydomain\myuser

Make sure you check the box to accept all certs as well. If your company uses a self signed SSL cert, you wont be able to connect otherwise.
After having been connected to my company's MS Exchange server on my HTC EVO for over four months, I was prompted to change my password on the domain (on my PC) and since then, I've not been able to re-connect with the new password.
I tried deleting the account and rebooting my phone and re-creating the account from scratch, but whenever I try to re-connect, I get the following error message:
Setup could not finish
Unable to open connection to server
The IT guy at work put in his own credentials and had the exact same problem.
The interesting thing is that I downloaded a trial of Touchdown for Exchange which uses the same credentials, and that seems to connect fine. I have no idea why one works and not the other.
Does anyone know what might be happening when I try to connect by adding a new account?
My suspicion is that there was some change in the Exchange server settings that impacted me once I changed my password to reconnect, but would like to hear other theories.

If your company made any changes to their exchange server, then you need to figure out exactly what is needed to connect. I have setup 10 different android phones on our exchange server, and the settings to connect were different on 5 of them. We also had 3 of them that were on exchange 2010 instead of exchange 2003, and those settings were even more different.

+1. I've spent hours with IT and with Sprint and nothing. I got this from Sprint to help my get it going, so I will post here in hopes it will help you. They sent me this link:

The info on the link I was not able to try because it required changes being made to the server that my company would not allow. The email info they sent me did not apply to me because the server at my job was already set up that way.
Good luck. I gave up getting the native app to work right. I don't know why something that should be so simple is such a mission.
Not sure if this will work or if you have tried it but. Clear the application data/cache from the applications menu in settings.
For you server, did you put in "owa.mycompany.com" or "somethingelse.mycompany.com"?
It sounds like this might be the problem. You need to have your owa server listed there instead of the exchange server for Outlook.
