Not sure if anyone has seen this, but it is really really nice. I like the look and feel of it.
Fusion Garage says that the Grid OS was built using Android code, so I was wondering if it could be ported to our TF once it's released. We'd use some features, like the integration with the Grid phone, but that's fine, and since that is also based off of Android, maybe it can be ported to phones as well. I think it'll be a great addition to our trusty TF and just be another reason why our tablet is the best.
Watch it here It's a little laggy in the video, but that's probably a pre-production model..
Ehhh, I'll stick with Android for now.
At least it appears to be better than their last effort.

I thought it'd be a nice idea. Now that I think about it, this OS would look great for a media center.
it seems like all they did was implement a launcher and apps. dunno why they needed to create a completely new OS to do that.

Although I would nvr buy a joojoo 2 the grid os seems cool, would be nice if someone made a launcher replacement versus porting the whole thing as it is not based off of honeycomb
read through the entire engadget post. apparently grid is based off of android and can run android apps there is just no access to the android market you have to use the amazon one or sideload them.
"The OS also has Dalvik virtual machine built in, so all of your favorite Android apps will work on the Grid 10 and Grid 4, but there's no access to the Android Market and it doesn't come with Android's normal bunch of Google goodies -- you'll have to go to Amazon or elsewhere for applications. That's why I thought it would be a nice OS to port. I'm sure some dev could give it market support like they did on the GTab which doesn't natively have android market.
But sure, if someone could remake/port the launcher to us and the multiscreen browser it'd be nice. I really like the launcher on it. The "clusters" is meh, but the design and way you move around is a nice change.
looks nice and smooth to me. I like it.
And i respect them keeping their chin up and admitting their last disaster.
Fusion Garage
I read somewhere that not only is the Fusion Garge OS built on Android, it is using some sort of java interface as well.
I think the interface is clean and I like the specialty features . . . the volume control, and a few other options . . . I know it isn't much . . . just saying . . . you know?

I love the speed of my iconia tab but I honestly thought swiping through honeycomb would be a little faster. Does anyone use alternate home launchers with their tablet? I don't know if this is possible or not. I love the interface so I'm content but just wanted to get people's opinion on this and any particular launchers they really like.
Sure is possible. I loaded go launcher ex just to try it out and it worked fine. I would like to know if anyone is using a launcher specifically for tablets though, if there is even any available.

Yeah, that's what I was really interested in. A launcher built for tablets would be something fun to mess around with. I feel like it could be tailored specifically for tablet functions. Possibly something like new windows 8.
ADW Launcher EX works, and is updated for honeycomb.honestly, though, its nothing revolutionary, none of the launchers are. I went back to stock. It may not be really fancy but it works, and well.
Have you checked out spb shell 3d for tablets? I don't think its out yet, but they have a concept video, and it Looks amazing. There's a thread on here with the link, in the general section.

The one in the video doesn't exist, and the one that is out now doesn't work on the iconia. And you're not missing much, I messed with it on an X and it was just plain laggy
I'm using Launcher Pro with great results.
I 've got ADW Launcher on my phone so I tried it on the Iconia. Even though it's a great launcher, for me it didn't cut it. It made the tab look rather like a big phone. It would be nice to have a launcher that preserves the tablet feeling.
I'm sure it's only a matter of time for Tablet specific launchers to roll out.
Personally, however, I feel that they got to step up their game to make something that adds more functionality and is more efficient than what the stock HC launcher provides. I'm not into all the eye-candy - its function over form for me. (pointing my finger at SPB)
It was easy to raise the bar with Eclair on up to Gingerbread as those OS' were built for the phone and those environment were rapidly evolving (and in some cases, differently from manufacturer to manufacturer) - with Honeycomb and the tablet environment third party launcher developers have had the bar raised on them (in terms of usability, efficiency and hardware) so in my opinion, it could be tougher for them to step it up.
Time will tell.
If anything - I would like to see support for skinning the tablet. 1 skinning app, developers build skins - release skins - users downloaded skins - use skinning app to apply skins. Done.
So I just came over to the galaxy android side of things from the ipad. The so far, (and with my verizon 4g mobile hotspot in hand), I'm mostly impressed. It's really a beautiful device and I really enjoy honeycomb.
However, my stock tab is incredibly laggy in normal use. This manifests most notably when moving App icons around. Another good enough example is angry birds which runs MUCH smoother I on the ipad. Honestly, my galaxy s2 feels much more responsive in normal usage also. What's going on here I thought tegra was supposed to be better than that? So far I'm a bit underwhelmed with the performance.
Also, what the heck is up with the lack of sd card slot? I'm absolutely baffled by this missing feature as I foolishly assumed it would obviously have one. 32GB is nowhere near enough storage for what I plan on using it for.
And what's up with the lack of netflix?

Hmm... First of all,ios does have a smoother build than android. Android has been released like tero years? But ios has been here for more than four years. Android needs time to catch up. well, then samsung's own tweek about android does slow down the system quite a bit. however about angery birds I myself feel it's about resolution.i feel the one on ipad has lower resolution than the one on android(this is my own observation,i have absolute no evidence to bakup my theory), anyone can confirm or correct me please.
Would any of the dev made launchers work properly with a Honeycomb talent and would it likely help with the lag? It is bothersome especially when my galaxy s2 feels much smoother. Thanks guys.

Suggestions
1. If you want to stay stock honeycomb and it starts to lag between screens, click on + symbol on top right of homescreen, then click other or wallpaper or one of the other options, don't do anything else, then just click the home button to back out. Lag should be gone. Don't know why it works but read it on one of the other forums and it works.
2. Spend $3.50 and buy ADW EX in the market and make it your default launcher. Spend a day tweeking the settings to your liking and you will not see much lag. There is also Launcher Pro Plus but the new update makes ADW EX better IMO. Many forums here will help you set up or tweek ADW EX. Leave your lag behind!
3. What else are you doing while playing Angry Birds? I have never had an issue with a game except for the ones that aren't optimized for honeycomb and are made for a phone. (Which I don't know how anyone plays these games on a phones screen)
4. For typing I absolutely suggest Thumb Keyboard on the Market. I don't know how I went that first week with the stock keyboard. Worth the $2.
Happy Tabbing!
Thanks for the tips! Unfortunately I need another. I just performed that system update thinking it was a good idea but it put that god awful touch wiz ui on my tab!!! Is there any way to get stock honeycomb back??

But you would have to do too many things above my pay grade to get it back. Not sure if a factory reset would do it, pretty sure you would have to root the device and flash a honeycomb 3.1 rom.
I like the touchwiz, I'm just hoping somebody comes up with a way to make the task bar black so it doesn't look so bad while watching Netflix. That is my only real dislike. And the innability to switch apps on the swipe up. A world clock, wtf am I going to need that for?
Everything you need to get your tab exactly how you want it is here. Including getting back to stock 3.1 as well as putting a black bar on touchwiz, or overclocking your processor, or yes even using custom launchers from the Market or from some of the great devs we have. The whole beauty of Android, IMO, is that we don't have to accept what the manufacturers give us. Everything you need, files, instructions, and further reading is in the "Look here first" sticky in the development section. The key is read read read, read some more, search, read read, and read. I love my tab because I can make it my own.
A factory reset will not remove the TouchMyWilly update. Honestly, it seems like you rushed into this purchase, especially given that you didn't know it doesn't have a MicroSD slot prior to buying it. 32 GB is actually quite alot if you use cloud storage. You can also get the USB adapter and transfer files that way.
But, it seems like you're not pleased with the Tab. There's no reason to force yourself to like a gadget. If you're still able to return it and give yourself some time to properly shop around for something that fits your needs then maybe you should consider that.
You can also check out the Android Dev forum a few links down from the General. That will show you how to root and flash a pre-TouchWang ROM. I didn't like the update at first, but it's grown on me.

Not as bad as it seems. But it would be great if Samsung published a sdk to make use of their customization of the Android shell. For one thing I love to see more of those apps that are able to stay on top of other apps and still let you use the other apps. Would also be great to get dirty with the launchbar

Yeah, I have read a little of the forum for the black taskbar but I am not that well versed in android to go messing around with folders. If it was on a PC I would be good to go, just need a simpler solution, hopefully an update. At least the taskbar matches my keyboard, just looks awful when watching Netflix.
Thanks for all the responses.
The tab itself is definitely growing on me. I still find it perplexing Samsung left out the micro SD slot; it's one of Apple devices worst "features" and for Samsung to copy that seems bizarre.
To be honest, I have no idea how to go about setting up cloud storage. I'm just used to old fashion storage methods. I have Google Music but really don't know how to get it set up as a network sharing player. I know I'll have to read read read, but I simply don't have the time right now to get into such an endeavor.
Really, don't let some of my negativity fool you. This tablet is awesome. It's just a bit of shell shock coming from my comfortable experiences with the ipad and my knee jerk dislike of the Touchwiz UI I had no idea would pop up in that update.
I'm very much a fan of stock OS's. Especially Honeycomb, I feel like if it ain't broke, why fix it?

Because Honeycomb IS broke. It's a beta, an interim build, came out of the oven months and months before it was ready. The TW update is a partial attempt to address some of these problems, and add some extra functionality.
As for looks, for a lot of people, Honeycomb is an eyesore in stock form, color-wise. The very cold color choices are not welcoming.
I daresay most non-geek people aren't fans of neon blue on black, or of faux-retro computer fonts, and above all else, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was meant to compete in the mass market, so it needs mass market visual appeal.

Hey, I totally understand.
I actually really liked the neonish theme of stock honeycomb. It matches very well with the neon color of swiftkey keyboard and just gave a very futuristic vibe.
The added functionality is nice, but that can always be addressed through widgets and apps.
As an aside, what is the name of that app that organizes widgets by grouping similar ones in the widget menu?
Like all of beautiful widgets would lump together into one until you click it?

Ooh, ooh. When you find that, please postback! My collection of widgets is getting unwieldy. Takes quite a while to scroll from left to right thru the whole collection. Its begging for some organization.
I had a Superclean ROM running on my Fascinate phone that collapsed widgets into folders (ex: all the Beautiful widgets into ONE).
I'd love that on my Tab.

It's a matter of preference. I like the TouchWiz update as it eliminated the worst feature of HC 3.1... the typing lag in forums. I also like the Quick Access panel in the bottom-right corner. One or two clicks to get to what you need, unlike the 4-5 clicks it takes to get to the same things on HC 3.1/3.2.
I am also wondering if this was a rush purchase for you if you didn't realize the Tab 10.1 doesn't have an SD card slot. Not picking on you, please don't misunderstand, but if an SD card slot was important, you could have picked up a 32GB Asus Transformer ($460) instead of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 32GB ($600) and used the savings to buy SD cards. I don't have money to burn (says the guy with a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and an Asus Transformer, lol ), so I do a lot of research before I drop $600 on something.
You can't "uninstall" the TouchWiz update once you have it. Wiping the Tab with a factory reset does not remove TouchWiz. You'd have to load a custom ROM to get rid of it.
And as far as Netflix, just head to the Themes and Apps part of the Galaxy Tab forums and grab the Netflix .apk from there. Easy to install, even for an idiot such as myself. That's the only thing that's making me want to keep the Galaxy Tab over the Asus Transformer at the moment.

But without touchwiz you will lose important hardware features of the tablet. Stock honeycomb is a highly incomplete OS and touchwiz fills in many of the gaps.

Tee Hee that made me laugh.
I am disappointed at the lack of dev activity though. I too prefer AOSP to TW and was hoping for a huge dev scene.
Im honestly amazed at how little education people here have about TouchWiz.
TouchWiz is by far the most advanced software you currently can get on a tablet. The user experience it provides is light years ahead of anything else out there, even Honeycomb 3.2.
Not only that but TouchWiz gives you access to specific hardware you cant access without it. The ability to change color temperature of the screen is a HUGE feature you can only have with toucwiz.
Here are just a few of the features you get from TouchWiz that you cant get anywhere else :
1. REAL multitasking just like in Windows. You can have TWO apps open at once on the same screen and not have to switch back and forth. There is nothing like this available in the market or in 3.2. HUGE props to Samsung for doing this.
2. Ability to change color temperature of the screen.
3. One touch wifi file access to tablet from PC <-- AWESOME
4. Sluggish menu scrolling in vanilla Honeycomb are gone! It looks like
Samsung devs used video hardware acceleration for scrolling which creates a smooth experience compared to Vanilla honeycombs laggy jumpy scrolling in may menus.
5. Awesomenew notification/settings popup menu. FAR superior to stock Honeycomb.
6. One touch screen capture button in the task bar takes a snap shot of the screen and automatically saves to a folder.
7. Lots of cool QUALITY widgets not like the junk you find in the market.
8. Motion gestures
9. Superior App Manager/ RAM manager which can run ON TOP of any app you are running.
10. BEST Music app and runs super smooth. Much better than stock H.C. or anything in the market
11. BEST Ebook reader app you can get.
12. Your tablet will run FASTEST with touchwiz. Samsung is using hardware acceleration for menus like Apple. Stock HC uses software rendering which is why its so slow and laggy. You cant get hardware acceleration if you dont have TouchWiz. No the Devs here will not be able to add it as its beyond their capabilities.
The list goes on and on. TouchWiz is simply a superior experience than stock HC. I would even dream of using my tab without it. Your tablet is incomplete and missing features to access hardware if you dont have TouchWiz.
Really? I guess it's a personal thing then. I used TW for a week before deciding I COULD do without out LOL.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought TW was JUST a GUI and nothing else! It shouldn't offer superior app management and ram management... and as for the apps you mention, well we all have choices via the android market.

1. 6 predefined apps, you call this REAL multitasking!? I have no use for these apps, except maybe calculator that i have used once.
2. I have no need for that. And i think there are apps in Market that can do this?
3. How? Has this something to do with that thing called Kies? I refuse to use this ****.
4. The menu scrolling has never been sluggish on my Xoom, so i don't know what you are talking about.
5. Awesomenew notification/settings popup menu? Yeah, design is little different.
6. I have accidentally used that screen capture button a few times, other then that i have no use for this. There are lot of apps in Market that can make screenshots.
7. I really tried to use those "cool QUALITY widgets" just to give Samsung and Touchwiz a fair chance. I couldn't stand them for longer then a week. Then i downloaded the same widgets i used on my Xoom.
8. Motion gestures... yes, this feature bugged me also until i chose "never ask again".
9. I have never used or needed a App Manager/ RAM manager on Xoom. Why would i want to use this on GT10.1?
10. I must admit, i have never tried the BEST Music app. I use Google Music.
11. I have never used the BEST Ebook reader app either, so i can't comment on this.
12. Your tablet will run FASTEST with touchwiz? Maybe my GT10.1 has a hardware problem, but i don't see that it runs faster then my Xoom.
So i don't really see what touchwiz added, besides that gray bottom bar, which really bothers me the most. If i could get a vanilla 3.2 ROM, i would be very happy.
Of course this is my personal opinion and i'm not saying that GT10.1 isn't a good tablet.

It is recommended to read the white papers on TouchWiz to understand why its so important if you have a Tab 10. Lag of hardware acceleration without it is one feature alone that should have everyone on board with TouchWiz. Not only that but samsung is releasing an api to allow you to add any app into the mini launch bar.

There are no apps in the android market that will give you true multitasking like touchwiz.
There are no apps in the market that will allow you to change the color temps of the screen.
There are no apps that will allow you to obtain a superior notification menu
There are no apps in the market that will allow you to add hardware acceleration to the GUI.

Do you work for Samsung, or did you grow up at a time when they still used lead paint on childrens' toys?

Yeah, I'm sorry, but TW doesn't improve my experience.
As a matter of fact, TW seems to have been designed by Samsung to lock users in to their proprietary ecosystem. Unfortunately, I do not believe software development--on the scale that Apple and Google, and allegedly Amazon is building out--is a part of their core competency. I am not sure Samsung has what it takes to build an ecosystem that provides the user experience on the level that Google already provides--so I do not want Samsung's Social Widgets, Music Hub, or whatever other service they are trying to push on me.
The only reason I purchased the Galaxt Tab 10.1 is because of the superior hardware design and quality with respects to other Android Tablet manufacturers, and quite frankly, their TW software just gets in the way. I really dislike having their proprietary software forced down my throat.
If their interface and software bundle is so great, why doesn't Samsung let users choose to install their software via the market or some other option?
--my two cents.

Been using it since yesterday. Love it lots, although don't like that I can't do a 10x10 grid anymore. The options relocation to the top is great though.
I like this launcher and realize it is still in beta but I can not seem to get it to set up more than three rows. Am I missing something or is this a limitation of the beta or of the Fire itself? Thanks
Not really a big fan honestly. Feels and looks a little clunky for me.
The MIUI patchrom was updated today to support the MIUI 4 (ICS) base. According to the README in the MiCode repo it looks like we meet the prerequisites to use the patchrom. I've used MIUI on my handset before so I wouldn't deny it on my tablet to say the least. The features are great and there is no end to customization of the ROM. The launcher isn't optimized for tablets but I guess Trebuchet or the stock ICS launcher is still usable. Hopefully a dev will hook us up (or if it doesn't require building the whole OS maybe even I can do it).
So I guess the question is: Would you use MIUI on your Iconia?
Hells yes

as long as a tablet launcher works, i would try it. i didn't spend all this money on a tablet for it to be a gigantic phone.
No. I want to use Android, not an iOS wannabe.

I couldn't disagree more. Miui is one of the most customizable roms available, ios is built to allow almost no customization.

Yea I agree it may share "some ios similarities" but all in all it is a very customizable android Rom I've used miui on my inc and inspire plus my old nook but took it off my nook after 24 hrs of use because sizing was terrible and it was a huge phone. But if a dev manages to create a miui masterpiece as well as the devs over at miuiandroid/miui.us bring it on!

If you think the UI is all that is different (or at the very least, all that MIUI has to offer), you've probably never used MIUI. Or at least not long enough to discover what it has to offer.
Let's not forget it's still Android at heart. And as far as Android goes, the level of customization is far beyond any other offering. You can turn off whatever you don't like theme-wise and use whatever launcher you're currently enjoying. If you're going to judge it on UI alone, then you're missing out on a whole lot.
EDIT: Of course, I have no idea how well it even works on tablets. I don't know if the MIUI team really considered the tablet aspects of ICS when making version 4. But like I said, any suitable tablet launcher should still work perfectly fine.

While MIUI does allow for you to tweak the way icons and the lockscreen look, the base functionality and user experience are heavily influenced by iOS. A fresh install of MIUI looks strikingly like an iOS device, with the addition of a clock widget.

But if I was to turn off all of the MIUI UI options and use a different launcher, why would I want to use MIUI at all? Why not use a stripped down version of a stock rom?
Personally, I didn't see the appeal of MIUI. Sure I could download a ton of themes but they never were well designed. I wind up making my own themes anyway, so I would rather have a ROM that was as lean as possible and theme it as I need. If you like MIUI, juice by you.. but I've tried it and it wasn't for me.

My favorite thing about android, if you don't like it you can change it, it has something for everyone.

i would give it a go, i might look like IOS until you start applying themes.
MiUI = iOS wanabee ????
I think some people does not use or never use MiUI....
but anyway...
MiUI on tablet I am not sure that will be that good... Since they are more PHONE DEVICE oriented...
PS:
Acer Liquid Metal running 2.3.9 MiUI perfectly, nothing iOS like on it...

I think what FloatingFatMan meant was that MIUI feels like it is trying to mimic iOS. I would have to agree with FloatingFatMan on this point...it feels too much like an iPhone interface.

Please could you show me how it's iPhone interface like ?
because I don't see the iPhone feeling on my MiUI.....
-> and by the way iPhone copied the Samsung interface as well....
if it's just about square icons on a grid and a ribbon on the lower part A lot of phone interface so are iPhone(samsung) like...
Just to be clear I am not an iPhone hater, I just bored about people who think iPhone (Apple) is a revolution and are the one create all.... nope... they just improve, or copy and got a strong marketing behind that's it.
So if I take my MiUI interface I got
- Widget (iPhone does not have that)
- A neat slide swipe animation between each screen (with effect or not)
- A way to can change really everything inside (wallpaper, starting animation, lockscreen, etc...)
- A music player directly accessible from the lockscreen (double tap on the time)
- no slide to unlock from left to right (but can be installed via a theme named iPhone...)
- etc..
well I got more than expected on my stuttering Liquid Metal... miUI give it a new life, and memory freedom.
so let me know how it's same I will be pleased to see.

To me, the overall layout just reminds me of iOS, and I'm simply not a fan of that style. I'm not saying it is bad, just not my cup of tea. I understand it is still Android underneath it (AOSP) and it is customizable, but I guess the way the launcher is laid out just has the feel of iOS, at least to me.
But everyone has their preferences.

How is miui an ios wannabe? You realize you can change the theme to whatever you want, right?
I use miui on my phone and I love it. I'd really like to see miui on the A500.
Edit: didn't read the posts above me, I agree

iOS and MIUI are not same.
maybe a very old version of miui theme was with the same background (wow that makes all the feeling... iBackground?)
Similarities or Same ?
Similarities... Oh my god yes there is ... but since Apple didn't created the "User Interface" of phones neither "Icons" we cannot compare MiUI with iOS... they got idea from something else before as well.
stop comparing all against iOS or iPhone... that will be better.
1) it's not iOSlike
2) it's android
3) we can change everything we want in Miui... and make it looks like iPhone if we want just by applying a theme... but the default theme is not iPhone like at all.. really not at all..
Please people, use the things before making statement...
