Buy a Better damn MicroUSB. I forgot my good cord at friends so i decided to try using the crappy one and well, it failed to connect half way. (wth?) but really many user's know there only good for charging.
waste of a thread but seriously, today i officially found out the stock ones just suck ass. You'll have like a 200% better ODIN rate after getting a good new cord.

As Dave would say.... Yuuuuuup! Monoprice has some very nice ones for cheap. I picked up like 5 or 6 so I would never be without one.
Someone should of made a warning sticky a longtime ago saying...
"Sprintsung's stock/OEM usb data/power cable blows major donkey peenor!"
Would of saved a lot of users a hard learned valuable lesson.
I've been extremely lucky then; I have only used the cable that came with my phone and have never had an issue ... <knock on wood> my next odin will brick my phone now
I've used an old palm pre cable from day one, it just seemed so much more stable. Never had a problem.
If I was as prone to user error as the average user, then I would say that I'm one of the lucky ones... But I also see a lot of people blaming other user errors on anything but user error, so I'm still not convinced that the cables are really that bad (I've flashed three different Epics several times with their own stock cables without issues)

Nah I learned the hard way that the stock cable really sucks.
A long time ago my phone just stopped connecting to my pc. It wouldn't install any drivers blahblahblah, and since my cable was working the nightbfore, I thought it wasjust my phone.
So I worked with it for a few weeks and I was confident my phones usb port got f-ed up, but then while I was in my friends house, I plugged my phone into his pc (using his HD2 cable) and suddenly, drivers automatically installed
When I got home I tried on my computer and it didn't work so I started blaming my wack ass computer. But then I lost my cable and had to use a family members Blackberry cable and now I can't get my phone to stop having sex with my pc

I aways use blackberry usb for transfering files, its thick and fast.
But when I used it with Odin it got me to where u at-stuck with fully yellow, white or blue screen. But I could alway get it back into recovery mode.
So I got my old Samsung Memoir usb cord(my Epic usb cord went dead some time ago).
When I used mt Memoir's usb cord with odin BOOM!-No more getting stuck, everything went through, but I had to repartition,i think repartitioning is good idea after odin gets stuck.
To make it short,i think that there is something special about Samsung usb cords,i only use them for Odin(recovery mode) and for everything else blackberry cords are probably best quality. And its $3 on ebay new.
While I've purchased multiple Monoprice cables, I've used them only for charging. Not only do I have absolutely no trouble flashing via the stock cable, but I keep it rolled up in a bag in my pocket wherever I go. It probably gets drastically more abuse than is reasonable. Still never had a single problem flashing with it.
For you user's who seem to like the stock cable, yes it can work. However the build quality of the cable is cheap. If you'd rather not spend 2-3 bucks and save urself some possible hassle's, then that there is user error.

No issues...
I've used the stock cable a handful of times with no issues, as well as i have a couple blackberry cables that i got from amazon a while back for about $1 each.. never seems to be a cable issue so much as a pc/driver recognition issue.. windows throws a fit, my linux laptop sees my phone with any cable every time..
I love my Logitech mouse recharger cable. its very high qualty and are 10 feet long.
Ok. I've got four usb cables. Each of them look different. Where did I get them? Who knows. All I know for sure is one came with my Epic. How can I tell which one that is? I don't think Samsung is stamped on any of them.
Ideas? Or did I miss the Samsung stamp.
Samsung one is one with fairly stiff thin cable, with microusb end that looks like its offset to one side.
Just an FYI. LG cables are not vary good. My GF has a few from old phones and the phone she's using now. And you can't USB tether with them your lucky if you can get UBS mass mode working. I'll give the crapy samsuck cabel about 65% ~ 75% on tethering.

This is in continuation to this thread.
I believe that we should demand a recall from HTC of their junky chargers. As of a couple days ago, my charger stopped working. In order to get it to charge my phone, I need to unplug and plug in my phone 20-40 times and get the physics of the connection PERFECT... if my phone moves 1mm, it will stop charging, so I need to have the phone somewhere that it will not move...
This is not the case with my Car Charger, so I know it is simply the phone charger itself that comes with HTC... they supplied us with $0.10 charger cables to save money, and we should demand a higher quality cable be supplied to us after buying their "Flagship Device"
Anyone else experiencing this problem?
Yes. My charging/USB cable has gotten loose. The Radio Shack one I bought with the phone works great. I doubt a cable recall will occur, however.
Yes mine does the same thing and I HATE it. I thought I was the only one

Apple did something similar, so this might work.
I had an iphone, and got a notice that I needed to get a new wall plug due to defects in the ones that were released with the iPhone. So my new wall plug had a bright green dot on it to indicate it was new.
HTC could do something similar, couldn't they?
Wait, are you complaining about the charger plug or the USB cable? Replacement cables are, like, a nickel on EBay. Or you can get an adapter and use your old micro USB cables.
If it's the charger itself, you may get some sympathy from OEMs, but I wouldn't even waste the stamp (or email) for a cable. Just my opinion, of course.
both me and my buddies cables have done the same thing their super weak
I took a chance and bought 3 (I have 3 EVO's) of these adapters:

It's weird. I also have charging issues, here they are:
1. Occasionally, after charging for a period of time on the home charger, the EVO will light up and stop charging. I check the battery info and temperature is in the 20s, so i know that it's not a temperature issue. Then, after about 30 seconds or a minute, it will light up again and continue charging. I never touch the charging cable or connection and it does it on its own.
2. Using the car charger, the EVO seemingly decides that it doesn't like the connection. When i plug in the charger, the EVO will begin to charge, then after two or three seconds, go back to discharge mode. It takes me pulling the plug and reinserting (into the cig lighter port, not the EVO) anywhere from 3-100 times to get it to accept the charge demand.

Then pins that hold the cable get pushed in when this happens you dont get a good connection. I have seen a few come in to my shop. usually give them a cable I have laying around. Leads me to wonder what others are doing differently. I havent had any issues with either of my chargers and I will test and play games with it plugged up so I know I put a little stress on it.

The physics of my connection are perfectly fine.
It's not the charger it's the port. There was a bad batch and it was fixed. Mine had the same issue and I couldn't charge my phone.
I've already apologized for coming off an iphone, but these little things are mounting and I feel the need to share. The input of this cable is a constant struggle. I find myself trying 3 and 4 times to actually get it in the bottom of the phone, and then.....nothing happens. At least the iphone jack had a press in on the side to get it in and out. So no charge, or it shows it charging and 5 mins. later nothing again. So that's coming from the outlet, but if I plug it in my pc it goes crazy with the sounds and asks what i want to do. So, you think ok some loose pins on either end? NO! I've checked and both ends look secure and neither simulate the problem when shaken or tugged or moved around. I have read all about soldering, but I am not able to do that yet, and with no ability to buy new wires in the US I am living on a dying charge. Are these wires so tempermental for everyone?
Ive had no issues charging but I know how you feel about getting the charger in in the first place, takes a couple of goes thats for sure!

After the whole day of wiggling and changing connection from usb to wall and even car usb the phone said battery error. Either your charger of battery is malfunctioning. Please check immediately. So the battery registered full, but then said 89% and then only 81%. I'm hoping to get a new charger and battery when the dell USA comes online.
I have 2 cables. 1 works correctly but the other charges when it feels like it. I have a support request in with Dell have yet to hear anything. The sooner cheaper 3rd party cables become available the better as I would keep more spares then.
that sucks. I've been considering the streak, well really wanted it and now that they've finally announced it, not sure i want it anymore cuz of its proprietary port. Why couldn't they have just used micro or mini USB like everybody else?
Everyone's house i go to has a micro/mini usb cable laying around so i never have to take a charger with me anywhere. And since my past 3 phones all used micro or mini usb, i have a bunch of those cables and chargers all over my house. Now with this crap i'm gonna have to buy several cables, 1 for the office, living room, car, etc. that is if i do get the device.

Take it to the store to at least set them in motion to get you another. Also, another store might have one. Possibly a drive, but worth it. In any case the best thing to do is to let them see it and know about the problem.
my brothers and my phones were doing this as well. turned out it wasnt the usb port but it was his cable. the cables htc sends are pretty weak. ive gone through 2 so far. you could try a new cable. my evo has bungee jumped off my night stand a few times...wont charge right unless i put side pressure on cable...after new cable charges fine.
ive had the same thing just recently happen to me. i bought some cheap cables off of ebay and they worked for a week or so then my phone stopped charging and being recognized as being plugged in then i tried the cable supplied by HTC and same thing! Now, its very sporadic. None of the cables i have work in the front usb ports (1 in a separate installed card reader and 2 infront of the case), SOMETIMES the HTC cable will work with the ports in the back and the only time i can get a consistent charge and data signal to the computer is through a powered usb hub(power cord to the wall) with the HTC cable, one of the cheap chinese cables i shortened fro 3 feet to about 2 and another small cable (maybe 1-1.5ft) cable i got in desperate times at microcenter. The fact that in consistently works in the powered hub tells me that somehow, something with the amperage needed to register as plugged in or charged has changed or gone wrong on the Evo side because my machine is a well built custom build computer and i tested it in 2 other high-end custom builds i did for friends of mine and i have the same problem through all of their usb ports as well, so i know its not my motherboard giving me lip. i would like to here another statement from HTC soon about this as more people start becoming more vocal about this issue.
BTW, this literally started happening to me 2 days ago and i got mine on release day. HW REV: 02
It seems all too strange to me that this little incident surfaces on the internet basically the EXACT same time i experience it. Sounds like a little quality control in some parts used in the charging circuit got over looked and we have the same part going at about the same time for alot of people.
Wow, you are the first person that I have seen complain about this:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/23/htc-evo-4g-suffering-occasional-micro-usb-port-issues/
I must change the comment I made there now.
Evidently on the last update they changed something vital. Mine won't charge via the computer at all. It just stays at whatever percentage it's presently at. It won't drain either though. I've tried three different batteries too. All the same thing. The only way I can charge is by plugging it into the wall socket.

Ditto the included cable stopped working within 2 weeks, and I've gone through 3 car chargers. I have yet to get a good micro usb charger/cable they are all junk
Wouldn't you know it... As soon as I post something about it, it starts charging again. It charges really slow though. It's taken four hours to charge from 62% to 82% via the computer. It's not even worth it. I'll just have to charge it via the wall plug.
I kind of had the same issue today after installing a new ROM. I removed the HTC Sync earlier to get Revolked 3 working. But after that my phone USB cord wouldn't charge, or even connect. It would for a few seconds, then it would just act like it wasn't plugged in. But installed the HTC Sync again, and was back to normal where my PC would charge the phone.
Hopefully this insight helps someone.

It's not just the stock Samsung cable, its stock cables as a whole (with a few exceptions) that are very poor quality
I've always been a supporter of the stock cable, having used it for mass storage or flashing dozens and dozens of times since September without a problem.
Yesterday I went flash the EB13-EC05 tar and it barfed about 10 seconds into it, soft brick. No big deal, just start over, I've had soft bricks before... no dice. I spent the next hour trying various things with no luck, different cable, reloaded drivers (probably 5 different versions), different PC, nothing.
Finally I was able to flash it using the advice of someone here, by leaving the (non stock) cable attached but the battery out and that worked.
Went back to it this morning and same thing, no communicado... put the other cable on, works fine :/
So yes, now mine is a POS too, and nearly poofed my phone. Another one bites the dust
I actually had alot of success with my stock samsung USB cable.... It worked for transfers and charges and everything in between up until last month, where my computers couldn't recognize the phone anymore.... I thought it was my computers, so I uninstalled and reinstalled all my drivers, ETC ETC, still no go.
I got this Micro USB cable which is made for Blackberry's for $1.50 with FREE SHIPPING off amazon.
AMAZON LINK
I also ordered another one of Samsungs OEM Micro USB cable for about 80 cents.
Both cables work PERFECTLY for charging, and data transfer, but I prefer the Blackberry USB cable. Its VERY thick, sturdy, and clicks into the MicroUSB slot on my phone with NO wiggle or loose-ness. It transfers data perfectly, and in general is about 1000% better than the Samsung OEM bulls***!
Yeah, you can get great usb cables for under $2
All I use it for is charging in the bedroom. When I bought the phone I went to amazon.com and found 4 cables for $10 including shipping. Now I can keep one in the car, one with my laptop, one with my desktop and one in the living room. On the other hand, all the cables have worked fine.

lol. Exactly what happened to me. Except I didn't go to sprint. I tried my gf 2nd cable and ir made odin react different. Instead of getting colorful screens, it would let my pc detect the phone at all. So I went out and bought a good one. Now instead having to reflash odin for over 2 hours, it takes one 3minute flash with no crashes.
Amazing how the cable fooled me. It charges fine, but odin data tranffer is dead.
Mine is bad too, I use my old blackberry, moment, and pre cables, depending on where I'm at.
im aware theres cheaper cables online for about a dollar or 20 cents. But I don't want to have to rebuy another 1 dollar cable after it fails cuz it was super cheap. I went to best buy and picked up the best quality in there. Now no more worries about a cheap POS from the web that's probably gonna fail like the samsung. Think about.. Samsung most likely bought the cheap cables like everyone in here from that website. And sure, the 20 cent one from online works, but give it a few days... Youll be running our to buy another.
what fooled me was how alot of members here said to reflash again if odin crashes. Or to try a different pc cuz it don't detect the epic. Or reload the usb samsung drivers if it dont work. I did all the steps. It lead to either a 3 crash odin attempts to a 4 hour frustrating color odin crashes. I would put the epic on its back, standing up, on the ground, on top of my pc tower, on my lap. One of those would eventually make odin flash all the way thru. But as days wenr on, the more crashes odin had. It got to the point where I would have to try for 4 hours to finally make the flash go thru. That was the hint that made me believe that the wire was bad.
I just wanted to share my story so that others might learn from it. You will read in almost every thread about flashing via ODIN, one-click rooting, etc. that if you have any issues you should try a different cable. You might also read in various threads about how the stock Samsung cable is a piece of garbage, yada yada yada.
I heeded that advice long ago and replaced my Samsung cable with some quality and yet inexpensive cables from monoprice.com and went about my flashing/rooting way.
Flash forward a year. Gingerbread started leaking and after a long time of being on midNIGHT my flashing/rooting activities started to pick up again. After some initial success I noticed that my ODIN flashes started taking longer and longer and that the percentage of successful flashes was falling. I chalked it up to leaky Gingerbread.
It started getting worse and worse and at one point I thought I had bricked my Epic. That when I noticed that my cable was no longer attaching to the phone with that satisfying snap. It was easily sliding in and out. It had started doing this after I had inadvertently pulled the cable and the phone fell off the table. So I went and grabbed another cable, fired up ODEN and voila... ODEN raced through the flash like The Flash and I was up and running on the leak of the day.
So let that be a lesson to you. You may read "try another cable" over and over and store it in the back of your mind but never really know what the symptoms are that would lead you to know that it's time to do so. Hopefully my story may add some color to those simple instructions and maybe, just maybe you might save your Epic like I did!
I completely agree...but for some reason the stock cable hasn't failed me. Never. If you take good care of them, I don't see why not use them.
Stock cable never failed me either but I just received BB cable from amazon for 2.50 and the quality difference is very noticable.
The stock cable fails on my wife's epic but not mine. Same with her cable. I have since been using my old palm pre's cable and even it's wall charge adapter. It works for both of our phones.
I wonder if the reason is due partly to the cable and partly to the port itself.
Stock cable never failed me either, but I copped 3 BB cables in case **** happens!

Same thing happened to me, could never odin my phone or use usb mass storage. Other cables would not work. So I went in and sprint gave me a new phone. It still wouldn't work untill sprint gave me a new samsung cable. It worked right away.

The OP speaks the truth. I can odin with the stock cable anymore so I've been using the one that cam with the gf's G2 and it works like a charm till I wear it out too.
My intent was not to disparage the Samsung cable. Mine was great for quite a while. I just wanted to let people know some symptoms that might point to a bad cable. I haven't tried the BlackBerry cables but the ones at monoprice.com fit well and work great. Until of course they fly across the room with the phone attached and get bent.
