ICS will not need physical buttons (hard or capacitive) since they will be onscreen like Honeycomb. Handsets made for ICS (like Nexus Prime) will take advantage of this by giving us bigger screens - e.g. 4.6" in the Eo form factor.
Of course it will run on current devices, will no longer be the best way to experience ICS.
No, a real button or a capacative button is always better, the space that ice user with the on screen buttons is already made up for with our real buttons

Nobody knows for sure if ICS will remove the need for hardware buttons. If it did, I am sure ICS would have legacy device support.

I've seen somewhere that most devices released within the last year or so should be able to run the update
My guess would be that on devices with physical buttons, it'll hide the redundant buttons.
I'm inclined to agree that it's going to be a non-issue. Android currently handles phones that have hardware keyboards and also phones that are screen-only. Both work fine and there's no reason to think that the same idea won't be applied to deal with absence or presence of hardware menu buttons.
I dunno about others, but I VASTLY prefer actual buttons to software buttons. If I wanted software buttons only, I'd have gotten an iphone. I prefer real buttons to capacitive ones as well. God I hope ICS retains the physical buttons, be they capacative or clicky.
Yes, ICS will run on current devices, and it will hide the software buttons. But onscreen buttons are the future IMO, because they can adapt. When you rotate the screen, the buttons move so they are always where you expect them. It gives more screen real estate for everything else.
Physical buttons are controlled by software anyway. If the OS hangs they stop responding.
I'm pretty sure its confirmed ICS will go this way.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
Another thing, the bar can show extra buttons. e.g. on HC, it has the apps button which opens a list of all running apps. No need to long press Home anymore.
This is context sensitive, using API's apps can add their own functionality to this.
When I first heard about the move to virtual buttons, I wasn't thrilled, as I really like having those 4 buttons there consistently. I'm still not totally sold, but as others have mentioned, especially with capacitive buttons, there's not much of a difference between a spot that's silkscreened on the phone and one that's just an icon on the screen. As long as they are there when you need them, I think it'll be OK. And as others have said, there may be some useful adaptive behaviors that could be done with that (as long as things remain relatively consistent for the core buttons).
Also, my approval would only be if the screen takes over that space AND phone gets a bump in vertical resolution to match the space (not just stretching the same resolution or even worse, losing the space physically).
The real question should be will the evo 4g actually get ICS update offically? Or are we going to have to hope for a dev to make us a rom. I personally prefer a rooted stock rom with a moded kernel(overclock undervolt) to a custom one. So i hope we get an offical release of ICS.

Doubt it guys webOS supports Multitouch (I could be wrong about it being able to be ported but logic would have it that it can't). And our WinMo phones don't.
Well I guess losing out on a portion of the UI isn't too bad right? Chances are that it could be configured to work with different gestures along the lines of TouchFlo and Opera

I don't think you'll miss out on a portion of the UI. I know the gesture area at the bottom exists but there is no reason you'd cut it out due to multitouch support. We have plenty of gesture related apps on WinMo.
I think the problem resides in the fact that the entire OS supports multitouch so if it requires more than one touch to do certain things, you simply won't be able to do them. Which could hinder usability massively depending on how multitouch is implemented. Plus getting our screens to run webOS could be a massive issue, it's designed for a capacitive screen just like the iPhone OS. We have resistive screens. Unfortunately.

When i was referring to "a portion of the UI", the portion i was referring to was multitouch itself. I should have worded it differently. Thats a good point though. It would require a ton of customization and rewriting in order to work. Although android was also a challenge, and they've come pretty far with that also.
So, who's about to watch the Samsung and Google event in Hong Kong? I'm watching for a timeline of ICS on our tabs. Should be fun.
http://www.youtube.com/android
Oh and the Galaxy Nexus will be cool too.
I'm watching with you as well! Hoping they will say there's an ICS update avail right now for our Tabs. lol
They say the developer SDK is available right now. Is that enough for ROMs or just apps?
just apps, we need the source code and drivers(?) for roms
Cool new intuitive changes borrowed from the android community.

Im guessing because theyre going to show it off on a new motorola tablet and its a samsung event. Hopefully motorola shows something on their razr event.

I think that new calendar will look really good on tablets. I only hope that if there will be a dedicated tablet calendar, the font size will be enlarged to some degree when you use the pinch to zoom function.
I absolutely love the "SWIPE ALL THE THINGS" idea, but I'm sure it takes some time to get used to. Getting rid of notifications in HC is something i find a nightmare. Where is the friggin "Clear All" Button?(Devs?)
Any thoughts about camera shutter response improvement with ICS on "older" devices, like SGS2? I mean, SGS2 is quite fast as it is, but there is always room for improvement.
The voice textmessaging seemed extremely accurate...in english. Hope it will be as accurate i Norwegian
The new browser, calendar, launcher and gallery seemed solid, so probably no need for any 3rd party replacement. Also, I like the transparency and the darkness through the whole stock theme. The new font also looks very nice!
What devices do you guys think will be ICS compatible? Minimum hardware specs? Still sittin' with an ol' SGS1, but i highly doubt I will ever see it running ICS.
When do you guys think ICS wil be available for our Galaxy Tabs? Q1 2012 maybe?

so nothing for this year i am guessing?

The current range of tablets (10.1, 8.9, XOOM etc) should be compatible and will probably get the ICS update. At least I hope they do.
It's a little more tricky for existing phones which have hardware buttons -- if the manufacturers want to release an ICS update for those, they will probably have to disable to onscreen buttons otherwise it will be just plain confusing.
Andy Rubin said most devices running 2.3.x shouldnwork just fine with ics. Seeing as the nexus s will get the update first, that sets the min speed at 1ghz single core. Our tabs should have no problem running 4.0.
I would expect source code to be released just after the nexus s update. So some aosp alpha stuff around Xmas. At least that would be a nice present.
Let's go through the improvemens:
- clean lock screen (already available as 3rd party apps)
- face unlock (first consumer implementation, though not new tech)
- notifications in lock screen (I am sure someone has done this, but not cyanogen)
- quick text respond (3rd party lock screen?)
- swipe away notifications (cyanogenmod)
- honeycomb app switcher w/ swipe away (finally!)
- data usage monitor (wow! I hope there is something like that for battery use)
- photo/video/gallery (some much needed improvements bring it up to the competition)
- cleaner ui experience (nice changes should make it competitive with apple out of the box)
- gv voicemails in call log (nice, but not a major uprade)
- native screenshot support (no more icon on lower bar! But already available for some devices)
- Google beam (doesn't really do it for me...)
- talk to type and keyboard improvements (we'll have to see if the can compete with 3rd partys)
- disable apps (already in titanium backup as freeze app)
- device encryption (already supported in honeycomb)
Personally the only other thing I really would like to see out of Samsung is an open api for their multitasking mini apps. Those are a major step forward in multitasking (at least on tablets)

no, they can also use the hardware buttons and disable the software buttons. will be no problem at all!
but whether they will release it for old devices (except nexus devices) or not... that's another question.

It occurred to me that the best way to gain KF compatibility with all the android software out there would be a simple (in concept) app that reproduces the four standard android hardware buttons (home, menu, back, search) on screen. I do not have the dev chops to know if this is feasible, but in theory it seems like an excellent idea. Thoughts from the more knowledgeable folks here?
//Tapatalk//
Install this: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.smart.swkey&hl=en (either get it from market or find an APK and sideload it). You need root, but provided you are already rooted, it should do what you want.
When it comes time for custom ROMs, they'll probably include on screen buttons, but this should do the trick in the mean time.
Huh, cool. That is a good start. Thank you. I'll try it out once my KF arrives. I'm hoping for something that can consume permanent screen space at the bottom, and adjust available screen space to running apps. At the very least have a fully customizable appearance, location, and behavior. As this requires root, it means I can't have Amazon streaming and the buttons... But, all in good time.
Again, thanks for bringing this to my attention.
//Tapatalk//
As I said, when custom ROMs come, they'll have on screen buttons like you described (the buttons that are in Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich by default, Cyanogen Mod has similar buttons available in most recent ROMs too I believe, can be enabled from CM settings under "tablet tweaks" by my understanding; regardless of whether there is an ICS port or a CM ROM port or any other ROM port [including the tablet tweaks from CM], it should be possible)
take a look at zMooth/zMooth Pro. It's a gesture area that is pretty minimally intrusive compared to some of the existing softkey overlays. I've been using it on the NC running MIUI, and it's a great tool. http://tinyurl.com/7znwtul
Sifjar, I'm sure they will, it's the meantime that's my concern. I did not ignore you, even thanked you.
Chuffy, thanks for that tip as well.
Looks like some good interim options.

So what exactly would you all like to see? Stock, or AOSP? If so, what would you like out of either of these? Leave me some feedback, and let me know what you all would like to see. ^_^

I'm getting this beauty in a few months when I pass by the US, so I'd love something for it. But seems like 4.2.2 for it is just around the corner, so you could wait a bit before doing anything based on stock...
And, on 4.2.2, PLEASE do one of these hacks that bring the 4.1.2 System Layout back. I hate the 4.2.2 one (status bar at top, buttons at bottom). Suck a waste of screen space...

Yeah, I'll likely be waiting on 4.2.2. And that's also assuming that Sony didn't go ahead and rectify that on the 4.2.2 build. (As that's a rather offsetting UI change.)

Thanks. As I've been reading with some people with info, they are finalizing the software. Also, seems like you're a really good dev. Coming from the Samsung Epic 4G and the LG G2x. Can't wait to get my hands on this tablet and also seeing your work here.
See ya another time, bro
i would love you if you could do something similar to slimbean
+1 for something stock based!
Because I definitely want the special features (MHL, IR blaster, Small Apps etc.), and in AOSP-based ROMs it seems rather unlikely that we will get these...
yeah, stock based would be awesome. do not want to miss out on some cool features like the remote control etc
do people look in the development section. Apache; a contest winner is making a ir blaster for aosp roms so we can use tablet as remote
Sent from my SGP311 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, honestly I was thinking something stock based as well, unless I can port some of the features to a CM or AOSP based rom. Truth be told, I actually prefer the Sony interface over AOSP; and I'm a huge AOSP supporter. Sony did it right with their interface. Minimal additions, but all seemingly add to the appeal of the interface. The small apps are quite nice too; and those would be rather hellish to port to AOSP.
@skiwong20 ; That's fine and dandy, but the application is far from mature at this point, and it's hardly the most appealing looking application at this time. No disrespect to the developer, as he's done a great job. But the maturity of the application simply isn't there, yet.
The ROM style I dig is best summed up with a look at the Viper ROMs on HTC devices. Mostly stock, but with an external mod supplied app that allows to toggle all the small and nifty tidbits... Changing app drawer grid size, modifying hardware buttons and the behavior of the soft buttons.
Adding stuff like: quick double tap on task manager icon does not bring up the app list but just toggles back to the last used app. Double tap Home goes directly to Google Now or something else, user-configrable, etc.
If its unclear let me knoe, and I will elaborate, its late here, need to sleep

I'd like a port of the Nexus 7 Ubuntu desktop ROM to this tablet. I know folks like android, but this thing is basically an HD-res desktop PC. That's thinner than a pencil.
The main hiccup is the Xorg driver, but I think this has some probability of working: http://freedreno.github.io/
Anyway, I'd be willing to collaborate on it, but I'd like to see Ubuntu Core working on this without all the Ubuntu Touch bits...

Not so much developement in this section, definitely recovery for locked bootloader is missing, I don't really need it myself as I'll unlock it soon when more stuff will be available but some have requested.
An Advanced Stock Kernel would be cool too, for now only DoomKernel is available.

I don't know exactly in Tablet Z, but if you decompile some apps from Xperia S, Xperia Z, there are stuff in bools.xml, for example, that activates some nice stuff. Sadly, no one managed yet to deodex the stock ROM, that's why there is no stock based ROMs around. You need a deodexed ROM to make some mods...
Tough choice, dev. Stock looks really cool and keeping the functionality of the multitasking windows and the IR blaster would obviously be great, but isn't the lag quite bad in simple scrolling of home screens? I would say pure Android would be better on this device but that is just my humble opinion :cyclops:
Looking forward to seeing your great work.
Well I'm running CM10.1 on my Xperia Z Tablet SGP311 - works pretty well, no GPS, no IR Blaster
Although it has the horrible navigation buttons in the middle - I'm always hitting either home or back or multi-task when I'm typing away furiously - but I must admit that I like the top use for notifications. Seems logical to have it up the top.
Either way OP all I'm after is the something regularly maintained, with good communication. I know thats a lot to ask, but its critical if people want to use your hard work.
Thanks in advance mate.

How do I know? I just played with the 4.4 skin at best buy on the Pro models. They seemed to have fixed nearly every design issue I had with 4.3 on my 2014. It really feels like a tablet skin instead of a phone skin. I'm glad Samsung fixed it but why do such a terrible job in the first place? Was my $600 not worth their time?
Incredibly excited for 4.4 update. It will be like getting a brand new device! I really hope they have some kind of option to remap the menu button to a task switching button. That would be the ultimate.
Two words:
Nova. Launcher.
I checked the pro series 4.4 skins in best buy too. Although the skin seems to be more tablet oriented, the TouchWiz lag still exists. The device was still not snappy enough
Agree... Nova launcher fixes everything. Buy it once and you'll have it on every device you own.

I played with a N12 at BB and came away with a different opinion. Most of the differences between it and the N10.1-14 were pretty minor and aesthetic. M-UX is of course new but did you look at the number and type of widgets available? Pretty sparse. What used to be My Magazine is now broken up so each category in what was the "News" section are now individual widgets. There's no Facebook for the Social widget either just like My Magazine. There's e-mail, calendar, and all the S Apps like Hub, Apps, WatchOn etc. There's Hancom widgets but we're probably not getting it (unless you side load it as explained in the apps section of the forum). Not much else. And at CES there were mini tiles shown that acted like shortcuts to a bunch of common/popular apps; gone. Unless Samsung's got big future plans for stocking M-UX with widgets and shortcuts I'd be fine without having a mandatory page of it on my home screen.
In terms of TW (now "classic") the settings menus and some others have been freshened and the notification panel drop down has been reformatted/resized so it's more appropriate for a tablet. There are more Pen Window apps and the way you launch multitasking's been revised to "swipe from the side" which now conflicts with other apps (EG: Astro) that also swipe from the side. You can now also cascade (overlay) Multi View windows which was a N10.1-12 feature that got left out of the N10.1-14 launch ROM.
What other major changes or differences did you notice that I missed?
As for Samsung's interpretation of 4.4 over 4.3 I've been using an "official" AT&T 4.4 ROM for about a month on my N3. The only functional changes are the location and wireless control panels have been re-worked so they are much clearer and easier to interpret and the lock screen has a "one app" option that's set to camera by default but can be changed to any app. It can also be set to "4.3 style" which I chose because there are more options including launching five apps from the lock screen. The notification bar icons are white (wow! ), there's a new slightly revised default system font, and there are some minor UI graphic changes. You have to look pretty hard to see the differences between 4.3 and 4.4 as designed by Samsung. The biggest difference I've seen is my battery life went up and the N3 which was already fluid on 4.3 became more so. Having played with M-UX and come away meh, performance improvements are what I'm looking forward to most in our update. That along with some of the cleaned up menus and new Multi View functionality.
I don't even know anymore what touchwiz looks like even though i have a samsung smartphone and the note 10.1 so many great launchers around.
I'm still looking forward to 4.4 because of the redesigned settings and notification. And hopefully bug fixes. And i think it would be the first time i actually have the most recent android version on one of my devices...

I don't give a flying crap about the launcher. I use Action Launcher. I left Nova a long time ago. Don't miss it one bit.
The task switching actually being at the bottom instead of the middle of the screen and the notification drawer not being a phone one anymore plus it having multiple sliders instead of one giant huge slider show Samsung put a lot more thought into 4.4.
Those two things drove me nuts. Anytime I have to use a phone app on a tablet I die a little on the inside.
I also like the icons in 4.4 way better than 4.3.

Didn't get a chance to play with the multi-tasking tab. So what side do you swipe from? Please tell me it's not the left where every single side menu is?
I hate nearly every Samsung app and use none of their widgets. I buy the Note for the S Pen which I use with non-Samsung apps. I'm just incredibly tired of using a 10.1" phone so hell yeah I'm excited about 4.4. It looks like your priorities are quite a bit different than mine so it makes sense your take away is different than mine.

Here's how it works now. If it's like the current set up you can, when it's open, drag it from side-to-side if you want.
Here's the Tab|Pro 10.1 manual. I'd imagine everything in it will be similar to what we're getting. Jury's still out on how Samsung's going to deal with the "menu" vs. "tasks" capacitive button issue. A pic of the soon to be released VZW N10.1-14 still shows our menu button so it wouldn't appear Samsung's planning any physical changes for the N10.1-14 down the road. So we'll either have a capacitive button that says one thing and does another (menu=tasks) or the s/w for the N10.1-14 will be adjusted to still support the menu button. Even though Google's killed the menu button in 4.4 Samsung's revived it because it still works the exact same way on the N3 4.4 ROM.

Google's the one to blame for the phone UI. The unified UI works fine on a 7-8" display that's primarily used in portrait mode but looks goofy on anything larger. Like this...
The Nexus 10's not a hell of a lot better than the N10.1-14. The only glaring blunder on Samsung's part was the full-screen notification panel but other than that there's not a big difference UI treatment wise between the Nexus 10 and N10.1-14.

Kind of polar opposites. I use pretty much all the features (that work well) in TW and have most stock Google apps disabled in settings. We totally agree about S Pen being the purchase driver for a Note though.
I'm running Buzz launcher, it's good on battery life and smooth, apex is good as well, a new update will be coming out in a few months for 4.4 let's hope they give us the new pro features when it comes out. I would also like to go back to the virtual buttons like the last model, I keep hitting the back and menu button in portrait.

I keep hitting the back button in portrait too. But I doubt virtual buttons are coming to this tablet.

Agree... Nova launcher fixes everything. Buy it once and you'll have it on every device you own.

Have it on all my Android devices. Note 2014 rocks with it.
Nova + spen is king!! I have nova on everything I use. I have put slide from the side apps on before but I always forget that I have them. I bought the note 2014 for the spen and snote (I format a basic chart for personal training sessions to fill out) and when I get my 12.2 it will be that much better. I would prefer to have the old notification bar in the bottom corner though :/ I used to use that mod on my note 2 and I loved it!!!!

what features are you using with nova prime over nova free? i have about $75 in google credits but just can't bring myself to spending the $4 or whatever it is for prime...it seems like the free version has everything i need...i don't use gestures or care to increase icon size or have folders in the app drawer...i'm curious to find out, thanks!

My favorite thing to with Nova+ is get rid of the app drawer shortcut and make the home button open up the app drawer. Not sure if that is a plus feature or not.
