[Q] Possibility of Cyanogenmod ROM on HC tablets? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm planning to grab an ASUS Eee Pad Transformer + Dock this Christmas (Mom said she'll get me one!). I'm a big fan of Cyanogenmod 7 and have been using it ever since I had my NookColor. Just thought I'd ask if Cyanogenmod team would be continuing their -EPIC- work in honeycomb tablets and releasing a Cyanogenmod 8 ROM or something?
Just curious.

AFAIK Google hasn't release Honeycomb sources publicly and hence there will be no CM for HC till that is true. Maybe for IceCream Sandwich, after Google release the source code.

I think you've said backward of what she asked.
Basically, she wants the reverse direction
@OP, I wouldn't want to do that.

This forum is for the Nook Color. Please post the question in the general sections: "Android Development and Hacking"

Don't buy the newer versions of transformer. B70 models, the most current transformers have a NEW locked bootloader and cannot be rooted yet. The older ones where unlocked because the keys where leaked. We even rooted it before the boot loader was done. So even if cm was available, no way to flash it currently. Check to see if it gets unlocked first. I hope they do, because future transformers are in my future.

When was the source dropped?

Since you think it dropped already go ahead and make one
What's the time frame they have to release the HC Source Code? Don't they HAVE to release it?
The Honeycomb sources will never be released. Google announced that at Google IO a few weeks ago, they will only release source code for Icecream Sandwich, which will unify phone (2.x) and Tablet (3.x) Android.
The reason they gave is Honeycomb is a hacked together version kinda rushed out for tablets, and they don't want anyone to see what a mess it is. (ok, that is my interpretation, their actual explanation is "this isn't a proper Android release as we took shortcuts to get it shipped ASAP for tablets, and we don't want devs to rely on these").

So is it for sure that we are not having custom roms for honeycomb 3.0 or 3.1? I remember someone (i believe it was bigrushdog) saying that the custom roms were just around the corner....and that was 1 month ago....
I believe some people were able to make some kind of homebrew ROMs based on the SDK. How that works exactly I don't know, someone with better Android technical knowledge than me might know.

They were able to port for other devices. But ports usually aren't the most stable things around - also no need for us to port...we have HC. We can't deodex and zip align without source. So anything a dev could do right now would be limited to some minor themeing.
You will never see a Honeycomb based custom rom (other then crappy reverse engineered SDK ones) because Google's not going to release 3.0 or 3.1 source code... You're gunna have to wait till Ice Cream Sandwich in Q4 to see any AOSP based ROMs (like CyanogenMod)

Seeing as how Google said they will require manufacturers to support their devices for 18 months if they wish to use Android on their products at I/O this year, I'd assume so.

And if Motorola does't... Source code will be available then for homebrew Icecream Sandwich if needed.

They better do that, atthe moment Transformer is not a whole ecosystem, and the fact that honeycomb will ceasse to exist, indicate any future update, which was officially promised to extend to an 18 month period by google, will make me deduce that Ice Cream is indeed in the future of my beloved device
I don't understand Honeycomb, there was and is much talk that Honeycomb needs more time to mature and have more apps to rival IOS but it seems they switched gears to ICS. It looks like Honeycomb is an aborted baby or some band aid solution until they release ICS in the fall, that would be less than a year for HC.
The app developers have no real incentive to push out apps when a new OS is around the corner and with the new OS it would be even more time for teething issues. I think Android tablets users are getting the short end of the stick.
Honeycomb and ICS are not different OS's. ICS is simply an update to Honeycomb, like how 3.1 was an update from 3.0. It will be the update from 3.2 to 4.0. It is the same thing as how phones got updated from 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.3. Next up for phones is the jump from 2.3 to 4.0, because ICS is the unification of the tablet and phone sides of Android.
If a dev is waiting on ICS to build an app, then they are both wasting time and potential revenue from selling the app, because the app will work perfectly fine on ICS. Google does everything they can to ensure that apps can scale and evolve both through various devices, and OS versions.
TLDR;
ICS is just an update to Honeycomb.
Edit: Also, Google has stated that ICS will be open sourced, and since we have root on our devices, I would say with absolute certainty that we will be able to have ICS roms. I wouldn't worry too much if there is an official update or not because of that. You'll get your Ice Cream and YOU WILL LIKE IT!!
You are true AstroTrain. Honeycomb was hacked together from the phone versions to quickly rush out a tablet pltform. Ice Cream would be a true tablet OS along with a phone OS.
The transformer is a very hackable device. If there isnt an official release there will be a dev release. All of the iconias are locked and some of the 10.1s are locked, which is why the transformer is the best honeycomb tablet on the market rightmost.

Will the a500 be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich?

is a very good question.. any "official" word?
No. No official word but I highly doubt it. Also on the Facebook page where acer mentioned the 3.2 update they said it will be the final update, sort of.

not anything official but i dont see why acer wouldn't do it, it's a great tablet but i will kinda miss the exclusivity that comes with honeycomb

I'll bet a nickel that "unofficially" there will be roms for our device for a couple years forward. Ice cream sandwich and beyond.

The final update they are talking about is this is the last Honeycomb update, not the final Acer a500 update. Google has said that Ice cream will be for all phone and tablets, excluding some older hardware. Also Ice cream is made for dual core systems

It doesn't matter what processor ics is made for. I highly doubt the a500 will get ics. When it comes out acer will introduce a new tab to make more money. It doesn't matter if the a500 could run it or not. Now we may have custom roms but I'm 99.9% sure nothing official.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
there is one reason why ACER might not port ICS to the A500, the A500 is not a phone, the A501 is possibly more into getting updated to ICS.
From what I understand (read somewhere), is that according to google policy, vendors are supposed to support their devices with new versions of Android for 18 months. Since the A500 was released in April, it should still be getting updates until Oct 2012 and ICS is supposed to be out by the end of this year.
If Acer doesn't provide ICS for the A500, they are going to have A LOT of unhappy customers which would hurt them for future products.
My bet is that we'll get it sometime early next year.

But you're just speculating.
Google has already stated that ICS will be AOSP'ed, so worst case scenario we'll at least be able to get native 3rd party ROMs for our A500's as long as the developer community remains strong.
Am I the only one smelling a troll around here?
However, the 18 months update policy is for the Android Alliance Partners only, which unfortunately doesn't include Acer AFAIK.

You had to be part of the Open Handset Alliance to get the source code for Honeycomb. Google wanted more control on this particular release to keep vendors from trying to use it on a regular phone.
From the "leaked" photos I'm not really impressed with the ice cream sandwich update. It might be nice on phones but I love honeycomb on tablets. Yes there could be some improvement but overall honeycomb is great.
ACER could get alot of good geek buzz, if they update to ICS and open the bootloader up.

Ah, but an update to an OS and a NEW OS version are two entirely different things. Updates are point releases and bug fixes. You confuse the two, methinks. I deal with a lot of business contracts and I think I can speak with a bit of confidence that there's no way Google would force vendors to do major updates. Besides, if they did that you would now have Honeycomb on some phones... Obviously they can't because you can't even guarantee the same hardware will run the next major release.

Again I disagree - sure there might be some irritated people on these forums, but the average consumer is now buying this tablet from Wal Mart of all places. That means they ain't all geeks anymore and probably won't even know when ICS is released.
The real trick is to buy like the manufacturers intended. Buy a tablet that does what you want RIGHT NOW. If you can't do that, don't buy because there's absolutely no guarantee that it will do what you want later.
It's like buying a Ford hoping for a free update to Jaguar before your warranty expires. Okay so it's nothing like that. But it is.

Cyanogenmod

Is it possible to port Cm7 to galaxy tab 10.1v? Would be great. ;-)

CM7, MIUI ... all great but without source for honeycomb not really
With the release of the Ice Cream Sandwich source they will get on the tablets for sure!
Questions or Problems Should Not Be Posted in the Development Forum
Please Post in the Correct Forums and Read THIS
Moving to General
While it is probably possible to port CM7 to the tab 10.1, someone would need to do the work.
And I doubt anyone would want to port a phone OS to a tablet OS.
CM7 is gingerbread only, which is phone only (those 7 inch tablets running gingerbread don't make very good tablets to me).
I doubt honeycomb source will ever get released and thus not viable for cyanogen mod.
I would not be suprised however that cyanogen will port ice cream sandwich though, for which the source will be available. That might be called CM8 then.
This future CM8 may be ported to the tab 10.1 then...
However, if it ever comes, it will not be this year.

[Q] Android 4.0 ROM for Acer a500

That's from Acer, hopefully our good developers will have it rooted and available soon after the OTA drops.
I sent an email to acer support and this was their answer:
Thank you for contacting Acer America. My name is Abin and Badge Number GWSI661. I'll be happy to assist you.
As per your mail, I understand that you would like to install ice cream sandwich.
I have verified the serial number and found that it is covered under standard limited warranty.
Mohamed, your system does not have an option to update ice cream sandwich.. This option only available on Smartphone and Iconia A200.

Officially it is true, so you will need a custom ROM for ICS on the a500/a501 as it stands today. I think I tried telling everyone that already, but just got flamed on the threads for saying it. But, that's not the point now.
Currently, let we only state what has been made public so nobody does the flaming again:
ACER has officially said that the only tablet that will be getting ICS currently sold with HC is their new a200/a700 models. ACER also stated they are scaling back the Engineering staff that currently works on the a100/a500 by 60-70%.
So read into it what you want. If you think this means 'currently' as of today doesn't mean that in the future they won't therefore this by no means closes the door on getting ICS via OTA then you can. You are free to believe what you would like.

Actually you got flamed for stating that the hardware in the A500 wouldn't support ICS, which is one of the most ludicrous things I've heard to date in this forum.

Not worried
If not A500 then another of its peers will get ICS - Transformer anyone? Porting will be a breeze as the hardware on all current tablets are essentially the same
It just the waiting sucks :-D
Compared to HTC who has decided that gingerbread couldn't been properly installed on his HTC Desire neither, I undesrtand the decision of Acer.
This is business. Acer creates new models because the firm is in competition with the other manufacturers and, in order to sell their tablets, they must propose some new things on their new models.
Why to buy the A200, knowing that its hardware is very close to the A500's one? ... Because it runs under ICS when the A500 doesn't.
Since months, we can find dozens of custom roms on XDA running Gingerbread fine on the Desire. Even ICS has been ported successfully on the Desire.
So, I guess that everybody who wants ICS on his a500 will get it too in the near future.
sir you are 1 big troll
timmyDean You will always be a noob....
The rumors and news items that were spread seemed to be a scam... Acer clearly stated in front of the world (cnn I bellieve) that they are NOT cutting down on their tablets. Acer made it really clear that they will do a lot to bring acers tablets to the top of the market.
Stepping out of the tablet market would also be a much bigger mistake since the new version of windows (code-named windows 8) will be targeting tablet devices.
To clarify your topics regarding ICS needing higher end devices is a ****load of crap. The first target in the ICS development was to make a Honeycomb update that would be completely compiled, faster and more lightweight.
it actualy needs much lower specs to run than Honeycomb....
next on our list is the official mail you will get from Acer as fast as you ask them "are you planning on releasing android 4.0 on our devices?". In an e-mail to me they actually said that they were currently in contact with Google to test the new android 4.0 system on Acer Iconia a500 tablets.
If you are planning on spreading more rumors regarding devices or whatever. add the sources where you actually got this information to it.
Otherwise get out from xda or any other forum for that matter and trow your tablet away if you are so unhappy with it.
My Iconia Tab is fantastic, and knowing that the new release won't add much new to android 2.3.1 I can life another few days without the pressing need to root the device and pirate android 4.0 to it.
please know that ICS is just a compiled (little bit faster) version of android with a few new functions (including an easy to hack face recognition system).
So Timmy: Stop Trolling or bring that behaviour to the forums and message boards that actually allow that.

For you to claim I do not know what I'm taking about is just wrong and I never said anything about ACER getting out of the tablet business. If you'd read, you see that I stated we cut support by half on all twlighted hardware which the a500 is part of. Since when does "currently" not mean current? Of course I would believe ICS is not currently available on the A500, ifthat is what they said. It is believable because we don't have it now. To extrapolate that to mean it will never be available from Acer, is quite a leap. Samsung Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus are the only Samsung phones currently available with ICS, does that mean that there are no former or future Samsung phones that will have ICS? Use your head...
