Stupid Question "G2 ATT 3G" - G2 and Desire Z General

I'm looking at getting a G2, long story short, its a T mobile version and I have att. They told me if I unlock it, I can get att 3g. However, I had read somewhere that you have to have a bell desire z to get att 3g. I really like the phone but I also don't want to give up my 3g. Is it true I just have to unlock it to get att 3g?

whoever told you the g2 will be able to get 3G from at&t has no idea what they're talking about.
You need to get the bell canada Desire Z (A7275) since its hardware 3G uses the same one as AT&T. Tmo uses a completely different set of spectrum for their 3G.

Thank you. I've looked and looked. I knew the frequencies were different and I searched and searched with no luck on finding a method. I really want a G2 and have for a long time. I just can't give up anymore than 3G. I get H+ on my Captivate.
Looks like I'll be sticking with the Captivate, I don't want to pay the inflated price for a Desire-Z with AT&T 3G.

The T-mobile G2 won't work on AT&T for 3G. You can get EDGE and that's it.

Yes, I also get H+ on my DZ in Northern California on ATT.

You do pay a premium for a DZ with the 3G bands but you can also use a 'Media Net' data plan in place of the smart phone plan (as long as you aren't tethering) I pay $10/month for unlimited data right now. Compared to the $30 they charge for unlimited (if you were grandfathered in) or $25 for 2GB, you will make your money back over the course of the typical two year contract we'd have to sign to get a subsidized phone from ATT.

On the Captivate, you can get H+ but it has to have a ROM that supports it. It doesn't come with support out of the box.
A person offered me a G2, a sidekick, and a mytouch 3g for my Dell streak 7 tablet. I really like the G2 and I'm thinking about it, however, I probably wont due to the 3G issue unless I just resell the stuff.

gbarayah,
I have an HTC Desire Z (a7275) unlocked from Bell Mobile, and I'm currently on AT&T's $10/month unlimited plan. Only problem is I'm stuck on Edge like the G2. Are there special MEdia Net APN settings which give you access to AT&T 3g?

That'll explain why the G2 doesn't get 3g on ATT's network. But as for my Desire Z
a7275, looks like there's something wrong with my Phone's hardware. It's supposed to pull in 3g 850mhz and 1900mhz bands, which my area is smothered in (I live right outside Philadelphia).
I shouldn't complain because I'm still on a &10/month unlimited plan and I've already surpassed my previous 200mb cap just on EDGE and WiFi.

Its not his hardware. The A7275 (Bell Canada version) of the DZ has the exact bands (850/1900) to work on AT&T's network nationwide. Its the phone I have, and AT&T is my carrier. Bell Canada and AT&T use the same 3G bands.
I use the APN settings below. If that doesn't work, its the plan. Pretty sure its the plan, as I seem to recall other folks on here on the $10/month plan mention that they are limited to EDGE.

Precisely what I tried to explain. Its not your device. As like I said I've used my canadian DZ on att 3g before.
If u look at it from the carriers point of view...10 dollar unlimited data?? For sure it'd have to be locked to edge....at least that's how it works up here in the great white north. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!
I would say everything is working normally, but on the bright side you'd get a lot better battery life on edge only...at least I do when I go edge only
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium

it's the plan. 10 buck plans are limited to edge. you dont get 3g with that. as long as you do not have the g2, you can get 3G on the bell canada DZ

ehh I'll take it
I'd pay $10/month for dial-up speeds, let-alone 2.5g unlimited. 100kbs/s is what I'll settle for when I'm not on WiFi.
Thanks for the help, guys.

I am on a $10/month media net plan and I get H+ speeds on AT&T. I have had the feature on my plan since they first switched to 3G in my area.
I get comparable speeds on my Bell XT860 as I did on my desire z. See speed test results in my signature.
Sent from my XT860 using XDA App

That's rather interesting, I didn't know you could force an "EDGE Plan" on a Desire Z/A7275.
I'm currently on the A7275 with AT&T, using $10/month dumbphone plan with the unlimited messaging feature (select that first to get unlimited dumbphone data). I get HSDPA/UTMS without issues, EGDE is only when I'm in a bad area.
And yeah, generally I get anywhere from 1, 2-4Mbits/sec depending on the day and time.

At&t 4G SOC code

Did you have it done over the phone, in a store, what BS did you feed them, etc. Did it have a noticeable effect on your speeds? I do know that one needs a 4G IMEI, which I have but I found it through a Google search so I don't have the physical phone that it came from.
I have tried multiple firmware/modems (KE7,KF2,KF3,KG1), APNs (wap, phone), build.prop mod, and still the best speed I can get on average is around 1.5 Mbps. The only thing left to try is the SOC code. I live in the Washington DC area and am certain that we have good 4G coverage here.

Before I had the 4g plan, I was hovering around 2.0mbps. I switched to unlimited 4g with the help of an old phone, and now I sit around 4.5mbps. I now have HSDPPB. Do it over the phone. For convenience, find the IMEI of a 4g AT&T phone before you call.

Just call AT&T up and tell them that you want to change your phone and give them the IMEI #. I transferred my unlimited 3g to 4g that way. I'm getting max 6mg in Dallas.

The problem is getting the HSDPPB (4G SOC code) added and maintaining the grandfathered unlimited Smartphone Personal plan. I've tried in-store and over the phone and each time I've been told that they can't add that code to that plan - they have to switch me to a 2 or 4 gig capped plan. If anyone knows a way around that, I would be very happy to hear it.
As I understand it, the benefit of being on the HSDPPB 4G plan is being able to connect to the "ATT phone" APN, which provides faster speeds than the wap.cingular APN.
There are two reasons that you'd need to provide the IMEI of a 4G phone to AT&T.
1) You're on an old grand-fathered unlimited plan and want to be moved to a 4G plan.
2) You're registering for one of their 4G plans.
For all others, giving them the IMEI of a 4G phone will cause them to flag you for not being on a 4G plan as they do track plan usage/assignment by IMEI.
There's been some discussion as to whether being on a 4G plan gets you better speeds. The OP in the thread below claims having a 4G phone and a 4G IMEI and a 4G plan routes you through different (faster) gateways. Looking at the mixed results I'm not sure its true or matters.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109983
I'm on a dumb-phone plan and have gotten as high as 8MB down as I've traveled the country so I'm not sure there's better to be had. AT&T's continuing to upgrade their backhaul and there have been reports of bad performance while it's going on. I don't know if that or congestion is what's causing poor performance in DC. OP, I'd find someone with a 4G phone and a 4G plan to see what kind of speeds they're getting before changing your plan.
Once again I am getting up to 6Mbps in the DC Metro area on wap.cingular and no 4G feature.... so I really don't think you need the 4G or the att-phone APN for good speeds.

Those of us using dumb-phone plans got them in different ways. Some people are using old iPhone plans, some are using grandfathered 3G plans, some switched saying they replaced their smartphone with a dumb-phone, and some started service that way (me). The last two categories seem to be getting the best performance from posts I've seen. In addition, some are using old SIMs from other phones/plans and some new (me). I think all of this has to be considered when talking globally about dumb-phone plan data performance.
I'm in the Dallas area and many times i get 6mps down and I'm only on the $10 unlimited media net plan...I really think you guys are just confusing At&t's crappy network speed with the fact that something is wrong with your phone but in realty everything is working fine. Blame At&t...
I'm still on the old DPPB 3G unlimited smartphone plan, and I've gotten 7+ Mbps on HSPA+ on occasion, using the wap.cingular APN. So far, I haven't seen a need to switch.

Europeans...
We're not idiots. We'll also have the largest LTE networks in the world soon. It's easier to speak in terms of "4G" as very few phones in the U.S. have radios that support HSPA+ even though it's an extension of existing technology. Go back to your conversations about how your networks drain the phone's battery, can't maintain a connection, and don't support fast dormancy.

You might try swapping your SIM at an AT&T store first. My account's new showing no phone assigned to it and they over-nighted me a SIM. Maybe someone else can comment on their experience using a SIM from a previous phone/plan and whether they had to anything afterward.
I have 2 s2's sitting here. Both with litning rom 2.2, both on the same att account, and both are in the system with the same atrix imie.
One is getting 6-8mbps down the other is getting 3-4mbps down. What would make one slower than the other?

Thinking about going with Simple Mobile...

So I got my Vibrant and used t-mobile and loved the service but unfortunately I got it just before a change to pricing plans and now I have some other options. I am actually considering moving to Simple Mobile, right now they will give a 3g Unlimited talk/text/web for 50 a month (no clue data cap but I do mostly wifi at home and avg 2-3gb streaming at most). Comparing plans and coverage It looks like Simple Mobile might be a good option for me right now but I just found out about them today at the mall.
So the first thought I had was to come here and see if others have any experience with the Vibrant on their network and if so how it worked out for them. So what do you guys/gals think of them?
back to the front page with this...
Simple Mobile is really good.... its month to month so no contracts...just bring your vibrant and buy the sim card and plan and ur set. Ive been using simple mobile for about 4-5 months using the unlimited everything for $60 and had no problems once you set the APN settings. If you tend to flash roms all the time, you should download an app called APN Backup and once you set the APN you want on the phone, you can back it up for easy restore after you flash a new rom.

So if I have gotten to where I use the data away from WiFi only on rare occasion the data cap would not be a factor. thinking I might give it a try, if i don't like it i don't have to "re-up" i guess. anyone else have anything to say about them?
If you want unlimited data, you need to go with Sprint. They're the only carrier that actually offers unlimited Data.
Also, Sprint is pushing to remove bloatware from their devices, something the other carriers won't even think of (and that's a factor for some people).
Don't even think about it.

What he said... only I've only been trying it for about 2 weeks. So far I've found that T-Mobile's 3G/4G networks are juuuuust out of range of my house. The 2G speeds seem better than ATT though as long as I stay on the device and don't try any ToS violations with the laptop. The data caps don't thrill me either but as was said they all have them. If you have a T-Mobile branded phone or phone that supports 850/1900 MHz (both), you should get 3G. 4G (HSPA+, which is really also 3G) is 1700 MHz/2100 MHz.
I just realized that after going into the tmobile store they have a $50 plan prepaid also for unlimited (up to 2gb).

Actually I read somewhere that buried in the fine print, Simple Mobile reserves the right to terminate your number if you keep going past 1GB of data a month.
I was with simple mobile for two months and it was painful. I just loved being threatened every day to have my account suspended because I hit the 2gb limit in the last week of both my months. Texts from them everyday. I don't teather either.
Plus I had to hack the mms apk to have the user agent changed for it to work. They never tell you they block it without the hack. They just keep you trying same settings over and over. Did the hack and default apn worked work mms immediately.
I am with t mobile prepaid and much happier. More data I barely even get close to capping and better customer service.
Simple mobile didn't even care to try keep me when I had then verify my account info so I could do a transfer. They asked me why I wanted to verify it. Stop I told them
With calling mart discounts I only pay 4-5 bucks more. At most.

Anyone Running Their Nexus 4 On AT&T MediaNet?

I've been running phones on medianet unlimited for over 7 years now. In the past I saw threads where the original Nexus and Nexus S were detected by AT&T and were forced to use smartphone plans. Before purchasing this phone I wanted to check if this version of the Nexus was also detected as a smartphone. I've been using an international galaxy Note for a year on the $10 medianet plan and was hoping the Nexus 4 could also work on medianet.

There are some that are using medianet with their smartphones.. You need to change the apn settings to whatever they are for medianet.. If I run by the forums with the information I will post it here for you.

I think the question is not in th APN used, but if AT&T recognizes IMEI number as smartphone - if it does, it will force data plan on you.
I've been usin Nokia phones for several years across the family and haven't paid more than $10/month for unlimited internet...
Wonder if the same trick will work with Nexus 4...
Anyone n the know - could you please post?
when I get my N4, I plan on switching to medianet $15/month unlimited data. Hopefully they wont recognize the IMEI
Medianet plan does not work with nexus 4..just came from att store..and rep put medianet plan for me..but when i got home..i recived text from att that i have smartphone.
Been running MediaNet all day on my N4, got a smartphone prompt on my GNex a few times...a quick call into customer service fixes it right away.

That's great! I was wondering if you could report here occasionally for a few weeks to keep us updated on whether you still have medianet or if you got switched. Would be much appreciated!

Will do, I am sure that even if they change it I will be able to get customer service to change it again. Never had a problem with them questioning me.
i call att and got medianet back...does anyone if it runs on HSPA+? any APN setting for it?

It is, you can find it by going to settings>about phone>status and look under mobile network type.
If your connection is idle it will say HSPA:10 but fire up Pandora or any music service and check, it will say HSPA:15
Just ordered the gn4 for the gf, hopefully the dumb phone data plan will still work for it
Yeah definitely hoping this will not get flagged and continue working. The phone has amazing specs and is dirt cheap. Definitely much cheaper than the HTC One X and has pretty much the same specs but for half the price.

Thanks for the info about calling customer service! What do you usually tell them? I just got flagged on my gnex and will getting my nexus 4 soon. Should I say something along the lines of "I don't have a smart phone."

AT&T doesn't seem to know this phone's a smartphone. When I switched my SIM from my Nexus One to the Nexus 4, my 2GB DataPro plan was removed and changed to whatever their dumbphone unlimtied plan was.
It was a pain in ass to get them to switch it back to a 2GB DataPro w/ LTE plan. Without the LTE plan, you don't have access to the HSPA+ APN, so you'll be limited to 1mbit downstream max. People have been getting ~3-5mbit (or higher I think) on the HSPA+ APN.

Where'd you hear that the MediaNET cap is 1Mbps? AFAIK, it's 7Mbps. That's what the GSIII forums say. I can't even run Speedtest.net (says I'm getting 0.8KB/s...) so I can't verify, but I'm pretty sure I'm getting over 1Mbps. In fact, the Galaxy S came from still gets 400KB/s (~3.2Mbps) so I'm pretty sure that MediaNET goes above 1Mbps.

I didn't hear that MEdiaNet was throttled, but I did experience something similar to your situation. While on "wap.cingular", Speedtest.net would act strange(9kbps downstream, ~1mbit up). I went to the store and got a new MicroSIM I couldn't get anything faster than 1Mbit. I called in, told them the Nexus 4 was an LTE phone so I could get provisioned for the HSPA+ APN's. They told me to power cycle (I just switched APN's from "wap.cingular" to "pta"), and I immediately saw 3Mbit.
So given this, I can only deduce that whatever plan I was provisioned for when I was taken off my 2GB DataPro was capped at 1Mbit. Given your findings, I'm concluding that anyone that had 3G service(MEdiaNet) before they rolled out HSPA+/LTEhad an unthrottled 3G service and anyone that gets it today gets throttled("Featurephone Data").
Also, the fact your Speedtest.net app is acting funny is usually a sign you're on the gimped plan that I got auto-switched to("Featurephone Data").
I can only guess and share my experiences -- since it seems the AT&T monster and their inner workings are far more complex then I gave them credit for. The same wap.cingular APN I was on, doesn't seem to be the same one those GS III guys are on.
Tbh, I don't really care for this thread. I can see that I'm getting HSPA+:15 when I use cellular data, and my transfer speeds are as good as they were with my old phone. I'm only paying $10 for almost 3G (US 3G is the worst 3G...), and ~400KB/s is fast enough for my usage. I can even streaming HD Netflix; I don't, but it's a good benchmark.
Also, the MediaNET plans are not monitored for consumption at all, so I have a true unlimited plan. When I first moved into a new apartment last October, Comcast was being stupid and couldn't get me internet for 3 weeks. I tethered for myself, my roommate, and all of our many daily guests. >10GB down during that time, at least 2GB up, and not a word from AT&T. Until AT&T gets a Nexus 4 variant, I'm not worried about my IMEI being recognized as a smartphone and automatically jacked up to an overpriced 2GB plan with faster speeds but marginal real-world benefit.

Are you sure you have 4G (HSPA+) or even 3G AT&T service for that matter in your area? A lot of rural areas are only 2G on AT&T's network. And a word of advice on ST AT&T running a lot of speedtests in one day will cause you to go over their daily limit resulting in you getting throttled down to 2G speeds for the reminder of your month. The daily limit is somewhere between 50 and 100 MB and one speedtest alone can use up to 12MB. People also report being throttled after hitting 1.5GB of usage in a month.
Edit: sorry just saw the H in your picture so it would appear you might be throttled by AT&T if your settings are right. Not sure if the H would still show up if your throttled as I've never had it happen to me. So not really sure.

Are you on AT&T SIM, or T-Mobile SIM?
First, I would go to APN settings and try "Reset to defaults" from the options menu.
If you still have issues check the settings against http://www.straighttalksim.com/support.php #4 Update Settings.
Lastly, check one of the many threads already posted in the Nexus 4 General forms;

Then I would think you're being throttled.
That's horrible then. I've only used a total of 663Mb of data (3g/4g) .. Use WiFi mostly
I think I need to contact straight talk then.
I would use T-Mobile Sim . but about 4yrs ago I had T-Mobile. & It sucked in my area

I have confirmed calls from straight talk.
I am throttled to 0.26 MBS (avg)
They are now throttling after 1gb or a unsaid amount per day.
Paying your bill will not lift this.
Supposedly letting your service expire. Then paying your bill will lift the throttle until the limit is hit.
I am getting a T-Mobile Sim to try now.

i think AT&T has been tightening the reigns for their MVNOs. pretty much all of the ones that offered unlimited are now suddenly limited.
I told straight talk they need to send me a T-Mobile sim card for free. Lol
If they don't. I will be dropping my service!

I dumped ST and went with AT&T's own GoPhone plan for $50 a month. Its only 1 GB of data a month but at least I know the limit and its not some arbitrary number. Plus I was afraid of losing my phone number which I ported to ST for violating some obscure rule of theirs like streaming video. Also their customer service is abysmal to say the least. Would love to go to T-Mobile but it sucks everywhere in Michigan and their new LTE ain't going to fix that as the state is 99% rural and will never get it let alone HSPA.
is there a way to bypass throttle?
So I have seen in some threads that turning data on and off as well as airplane mode tricks the system. But it does not work for me. Any one know how to do this and how can I stop them from knowing how much data I'm using?
Get T-Mobile Truly Unlimited
30gb this month so far and still getting 14mbps
[LG NEXUS⁴] [LIQUIDSMOOTH] [MATR1X] [POETIC BLK BUMPER] [APEX PRO] [TAPATALK PRO]
Lol nice..
Ajay note their is no way to "trick the system"
Your just sol

Dreadful Data Speeds on AT&T

I have been experiencing very awful data speeds (around 0.30mbps download) on my Nexus 4 with AT&T. I contacted AT&T and I am on the "Data plan for 4g Smartphones". Every other AT&T phone around me hits about 7mbps. I've changed my APNs and I just have no idea what to do right now.

Are you on a grandfathered unlimited plan? And if so, have you gone over 5gb of data? If so, you might just be throttled right now till your new billing cycle starts.
If "no" to the above, you got me.

When I contacted the AT&T Live Chat Support they told me that I was already on the 4G (HSPA+) data plan but not the LTE one. If you contact them and make sure they have the correct model number for your phone and the correct IMEI they should just switch it for you.

You can try to give them the IMEI for a 4G LTE phone and just tell them you're using that phone and that they need to switch you to the appropriate data plan.
