Looking for At&t users who have had success adding SOC code HSDPPB to their data plan as mentioned in this thread.

Did you have it done over the phone, in a store, what BS did you feed them, etc. Did it have a noticeable effect on your speeds? I do know that one needs a 4G IMEI, which I have but I found it through a Google search so I don't have the physical phone that it came from.
I have tried multiple firmware/modems (KE7,KF2,KF3,KG1), APNs (wap, phone), build.prop mod, and still the best speed I can get on average is around 1.5 Mbps. The only thing left to try is the SOC code. I live in the Washington DC area and am certain that we have good 4G coverage here.

Something's not right... I'm in the Washington DC area as well, I do NOT have the 4G feature added, and I'm getting as high as 6Mbps/2Mbps...
Before I had the 4g plan, I was hovering around 2.0mbps. I switched to unlimited 4g with the help of an old phone, and now I sit around 4.5mbps. I now have HSDPPB. Do it over the phone. For convenience, find the IMEI of a 4g AT&T phone before you call.

Just call AT&T up and tell them that you want to change your phone and give them the IMEI #. I transferred my unlimited 3g to 4g that way. I'm getting max 6mg in Dallas.

The problem is getting the HSDPPB (4G SOC code) added and maintaining the grandfathered unlimited Smartphone Personal plan. I've tried in-store and over the phone and each time I've been told that they can't add that code to that plan - they have to switch me to a 2 or 4 gig capped plan. If anyone knows a way around that, I would be very happy to hear it.
As I understand it, the benefit of being on the HSDPPB 4G plan is being able to connect to the "ATT phone" APN, which provides faster speeds than the wap.cingular APN.
There are two reasons that you'd need to provide the IMEI of a 4G phone to AT&T.
1) You're on an old grand-fathered unlimited plan and want to be moved to a 4G plan.
2) You're registering for one of their 4G plans.
For all others, giving them the IMEI of a 4G phone will cause them to flag you for not being on a 4G plan as they do track plan usage/assignment by IMEI.
There's been some discussion as to whether being on a 4G plan gets you better speeds. The OP in the thread below claims having a 4G phone and a 4G IMEI and a 4G plan routes you through different (faster) gateways. Looking at the mixed results I'm not sure its true or matters.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109983
I'm on a dumb-phone plan and have gotten as high as 8MB down as I've traveled the country so I'm not sure there's better to be had. AT&T's continuing to upgrade their backhaul and there have been reports of bad performance while it's going on. I don't know if that or congestion is what's causing poor performance in DC. OP, I'd find someone with a 4G phone and a 4G plan to see what kind of speeds they're getting before changing your plan.
Once again I am getting up to 6Mbps in the DC Metro area on wap.cingular and no 4G feature.... so I really don't think you need the 4G or the att-phone APN for good speeds.

Those of us using dumb-phone plans got them in different ways. Some people are using old iPhone plans, some are using grandfathered 3G plans, some switched saying they replaced their smartphone with a dumb-phone, and some started service that way (me). The last two categories seem to be getting the best performance from posts I've seen. In addition, some are using old SIMs from other phones/plans and some new (me). I think all of this has to be considered when talking globally about dumb-phone plan data performance.
I'm in the Dallas area and many times i get 6mps down and I'm only on the $10 unlimited media net plan...I really think you guys are just confusing At&t's crappy network speed with the fact that something is wrong with your phone but in realty everything is working fine. Blame At&t...
I'm still on the old DPPB 3G unlimited smartphone plan, and I've gotten 7+ Mbps on HSPA+ on occasion, using the wap.cingular APN. So far, I haven't seen a need to switch.

Because American wireless companies don't offer that level of service. They prefer that customers only use phones locked to their service.

We're not idiots. We'll also have the largest LTE networks in the world soon. It's easier to speak in terms of "4G" as very few phones in the U.S. have radios that support HSPA+ even though it's an extension of existing technology. Go back to your conversations about how your networks drain the phone's battery, can't maintain a connection, and don't support fast dormancy.

You might try swapping your SIM at an AT&T store first. My account's new showing no phone assigned to it and they over-nighted me a SIM. Maybe someone else can comment on their experience using a SIM from a previous phone/plan and whether they had to anything afterward.
I have 2 s2's sitting here. Both with litning rom 2.2, both on the same att account, and both are in the system with the same atrix imie.
One is getting 6-8mbps down the other is getting 3-4mbps down. What would make one slower than the other?

12/28/11 UPDATE:
The reason for the better speeds on the Skyrocket is that it uses the 'pta' apn instead of the 'phone' or 'wap.cingular' ones. The only way to use that apn is if you have an LTE sim card and you have an LTE data plan on your account (you won't get a data connection if you try to use that apn without the sim and data plan). So, I went to my local AT&T store and got a new sim and had them switch my plan and now I am able to get pings in the 50-70ms range and my download speeds have doubled. I'm sure this varies a lot from area to area but we will all need to upgrade to an lte sim and data plan eventually so you might as well do it now and try out the new APN. It made a significant improvement for me in central New Jersey. Good Luck!
Here are the apn settings that I copied from my wife's Skyrocket. Again, YOU MUST BE ON THE LTE DATA PLAN AND HAVE AN LTE SIM CARD FOR THIS TO WORK.
Name: ATT pta
APN: pta
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: None
APN type: internet + mms
Any fields not mentioned above should be left blank.
Original Post:
So yesterday I bought my wife the SGS2 Skyrocket (she wanted an iPhone, I wouldn't allow it). I started setting things up for her and did a speedtest to see how it compared to my i9100. WOW, that phone is blazing fast! And we are in central New Jersey where there is no LTE available so this was on HSPA+. I have only tested in a few locations, but at my house she got 6 mbps down and 2 up. I tested mine right after and I got around half that (and I have NEVER gotten 6 mbps down since I've owned my phone). These tests were consistent as I ran them multiple times. Her ping was also consistently around 60ms in many different locations with many different signal levels. My ping never goes below around 110ms. Needless to say, I'm displeased about this. I know there were a bunch of threads from months ago with some ideas about AT&T data speeds (I've read them all) and I've tried some of those ideas but nothing gets me close to what she is achieving on the Skyrocket. Here is what I've tried so far:
1) I noticed her phone is on that 'pta' apn whereas mine was on the 'phone' apn. I tried copying her information over but my phone would not establish a data connection when using the 'pta' apn. I researched it and found out this was because my phone is on the HSPA+ 4G plan and not the LTE 4G plan. This might have something to do with it but I doubt it. Last night I tried switching our sim cards. We were in an area with bad coverage but from what I could tell, her phone was still pulling better speeds. I was even able to use the 'pta' apn on my phone once I had her sim card but it still didn't improve much. I am going to try this again tonight at home where we get good signal. This will confirm that it is not the LTE sim card, the LTE data plan or the 'pta' apn.
2) I tried switching modems, flashed about 5 of them but there was not a significant difference in my speed between any of them. I even tried flashing a modem from the AT&T GSII (not the skyrocket), it still didn't have a noticeable improvement.
3) This thread talks about making some changes to the build.prop file to improve your HSPA speeds. I have tried these changes with no improvement. Perhaps there is some special configuration in her build.prop but her phone is not rooted so I can't look to find out.
I'm not sure what else to try at this point. Something very fundamental must be wrong because I expect an AT&T phone to be slightly better on their network (because the software is optimized for that network only), it shouldn't be twice the download speeds and half the ping time. I would be curious as to how the AT&T SGSII (not skyrocket) performs. Maybe the skyrocket has better hardware for the modem than our phone?
Any feedback is appreciated and if you know anyone with the AT&T versions of our phones, go ahead and compare your speedtests to theirs and report your results. Needless to say, I can't live with my wife having a faster phone than me so I need to fix this ASAP! Thanks in advance!
The maximum theorical HSPA+ speed supported by hardware on the SkyRocket is 42mbps while the S2 is 21mbps. The processor on the SkyRocket is a Qualcomm because our Exynos chip doesn't support 42mbps.

Thanks for the reply. Interesting thought but according to this page, the Skyrocket is also 21mbps HSPA+, same as our phones.
Hah ! I'm not sure, cos the SkyRocket amd the Tmobile s2 are supposed to be nearly identical. Can't find an exact quote by AT&T regarding this as well

Ok I just tried the wap.cingular APN, I got the same performance as on 'phone'. What is your ping like? The Skyrocket was getting 50's and 60's consistently and I never approach pings that low in my i9100.
I have gotten as high as 8Mbps down and 2.2 up with the KL1 modem using the "phone" apn.
In fact at the office my GT-I9100 (the international version) is generally faster than my colleagues SkyRocket when testing download/upload speeds.
Dan
Wow, really? Do I have defective hardware? I know speeds vary a lot by location but the Skyrocket has consistenly been faster everywhere I've tested it so it proves the network is capable of much more than my phone is achieving. Also, I've never wiped my phone since I got it, could that be a factor (I doubt it because I don't have a single issue but I'm just throwing it out there).
Anyone else able to test their i9100 vs a skyrocket or at&t gs2? BTW I am currently using KL1 as well and don't get the results you are getting.
Compare tcp reveive window size and window scaling settings, also if there is a proxy defined in apn, sgs2 is not following it unfortunately....
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
If there is a huge difference in ping it could indicate that skyrocket apn is "optimized" via special proxy. And as i mentioned, even u tried your wife's sim, sgs2 is ignoring it due to it limitation...
Only guessing...

You should put your SIM in your wife's skyrocket, then call AT&T and ask them to put you on the LTE plan--assuming they don't charge more for this--then switch back and run some more tests. It could be that the pta apn isn't allowing the I9100 whatever increased throughput it is granting the skyrocket because you're on a different speed plan.
It's also possible that the Qualcomm HSPA+ hardware is just better (please don't lynch me for this suggestion).
Ok, thanks all for the input. Tonight I am going to try her sim in my phone with the pta apn. Then if the speeds improve I'll know thats the issue and I can work on getting my sim provisioned to the LTE plan as well. I know her sim is set up on that plan and will work with the pta apn so I'll be able to test it that way. I'll also put my sim in her phone and set up the 'phone' apn and try that, just to see. I'll report back late tonight or tomorrow with my findings.

I'm interested to see how this turns out. I've been wondering the same thing. I know LTE is definitely faster but I still think that my speeds should be faster than they really are. Later this week I'm going to go to the AT&T Corporate store in my area and compare my speeds against some of their other "4G" devices and see where I fall.
So I tested my phone with my wife's LTE provisioned SIM card and got the same slow speeds. But, I then was able to change the apn to pta and try again and that did the trick. I started getting ping's in the 50-70 range and much higher download speeds (hit 6.5 around my house for the first time ever). So I can confirm that the Skyrocket gets better speeds because it is using the 'pta' apn. And to use that apn, you have to have an LTE SIM with the LTE data plan. I went to my local AT&T store today and upgraded my sim and switched that plan and I am now enjoying consistently better data speeds.
I will update the first post to reflect my findings so everyone will know how to get the better speeds.
On a completely different topic, we were in Brooklyn NY last night where AT&T has LTE coverage. I did a few speed tests on my wife's Skyrocket and WOW, its insanely fast. With just 1 bar of signal it got over 10mbps down and with 4 bars it got 58 mbps down and 17 mbps up. I couldn't believe my eyes but I ran multiple tests and all were incredibly fast. I don't know if AT&T will be able to maintain speeds like that once the network gets saturated but the idea of having substantially faster internet on my cell phone as compared to my FIOS internet at home is really insane. I can't wait for them to expand the LTE network, hopefully they get it up and running in New Jersey right in time for my next phone upgrade.
Just went to the AT&T store to get an upgrade for my dad. Did his upgrade and then was in the process of getting my LTE sim but their system wouldn't let them process the request. He told me to just come back tomorrow and he'll try it again.

Cool, let me know how it works out. For me, they had to play around with the imei to get the system to allow the LTE plan on the account. I just told them that I sometimes put my sim in LTE compatible phones and I need it to work for when I do. Took him 10 minutes to fight with the system then he was able to get it to work. They did it for no charge and I was able to keep my unlimited data plan.
OK cool, I know there was no issue when I first did that for HSPA+ when I got my GSII. I'm going to try it again tomorrow. The guy that helped me out was cool and I told him he'd have to probably get the IMEI from one of their LTE devices to "activate" me. I also have unlimited so that's good to hear.

I updated my APN and can successfully connect to the "pta" APN. Ran it twice so far and ping is between 50-70 which is better than I have gotten so far. Thanks a lot for this btw. Hopefully speeds will improve slightly overall.

I have AT&T and I just got the Nexus 4. My previous phone was the Samsung Galaxy S II and I was getting data speeds of about 8Mbps. Now that I switched to the Nexus 4 it is acting like I am capped. I am getting data speeds of 7kbs down and 1.2Mbs down. For some reason every speed test I run results in 7Kbps down.
Why is this happening? On the galaxy S II I could flash different modems. Does the Nexus 4 have modems and could that be my problem?
Do a little searching and you will find your answer. I recently made a thread about this myself.
It has to do with the way the Nexus 4 shows up in AT&T's system. Call them and tell them you just switched to a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket (an LTE phone) and give them this IMEI: 357288040480105. They will reprovision your data to the fastest allowed speeds including LTE and HSPA+ when LTE isn't available. After you get off the phone with them go to you APN settings page and go here. Add the APN 3 on that page and combine APN 5 with it (MMS). Delete any other APNs you have after you save that one. Restart your phone and you'll be good to go!

Its not about lying to them, its about their system needs an IMEI to determine what plan to put on your account, i.e. the reps cant just 'pick' from a list of data plans, they input an IMEI and the system tells them 'you get this plan'. You need to have a smartphone 4G or LTE dataplan on your account to get faster speeds.
Obligatory:

Just create your own "4G" IMEI, call AT&T, give it to them, reboot, enjoy HSPA+.

Pat Simpson: So, I see on the internet that IMEI is the one to give AT&T to get a Nexus to work on our network.
Me: Yes.

I would suggest going to an AT&T store to do this now. They want to sit back and rob us of our full experience with their network
If you're on TMobile, try the APNs found here. They may work, they may not work. Also, go into your MyTmobile account and make sure your phone is listed as a Nexus 4

I am getting on avg 6mb down and 1.5 up is that normal for HSPA+ in the Boston area? The phone does change to HSPA+15 when data is being used.
If this is normal or "good" should I bother with calling At&t and change my imei back to my old Inspire 4G?
Thanks for you help on this....
After calling AT&T wireless and providing them an IMEI number for a 4G LTE device, and created a new APN (Listed below are the settings), my device is working amazingly better. Not only is the Speedtest.net app working perfect now, I am now reaching download speeds of 9359 kbps, and upload speeds of 608 kbps.
APN Settings:
Name: AT&T HSPA+
APN: pta (NOTE: IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN LTE PLAN, CHANGE THIS TO "PHONE")
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS Proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80 (NOTE: IF MMS ISN'T WORKING, CHANGE THIS TO "8080")
MCC: 310
MNC 410
Authentication type: Not set
APN type: default,admin,fota,mms,supl,hipri
APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN roaming protocol: IPv4/IPv6

Hope this helps folks who are having data speed issues.

Hey guys. I have the same problem, my Nexus shows me 3 kB/s download speed — which is slow even by 1996 year standards. I'm using prepaid $25 plan with a data package on it. I wonder, would this «new IMEI» trick work with my prepaid plan? Or have I switch to a slavery commitment plan first? Please answer because this is the only thread on the internet I have found with some sense on the topic. Thanks.

That sounds about right for AT&T HSPA+.

This doesn't work, I have a 4g provisioned plan and my phone keeps connecting and disconnecting from hspa plus over and over again. I cannot get 1 damn APN to work the correct way with AT&T. I've had issue after issue and no fix. I cannot get this connection issue corrected. I've had an LTE plan with LTE APN nothing, a 4G plan with 4G APN and nothing. The only thing that works is the default settings but speed test errors so I'm not even sure what speeds that is now.

Hi,
I've read pages and pages of APN threads and still can't get decent speeds on ATT (nor can I send MMS).
Is anyone in NYC getting good speeds as well as MMS capability?
If so, would you mind listing the APN settings that you're using?
Thanks,
Chris
What APN are you using? And what plan are you on (dunno if it makes a difference as IMO it shouldn't).
What speeds are you getting currently also?
I, too, am in NYC with AT&T. I have used both the 'phone' and 'pta' APNs and all variations thereof and have settled on the 'pta' APN.
The best speeds the N4 managed to get with any of the APNs I tried was probably close to 1600kbps down/ 250kbps up and 225ms ping. This is in Midtown Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights. Although the phone consistently connects to HSPA+ 21.1 network, I am just not seeing the hypothetical speeds everyone is talking about.
In any case, this doesn't concerns me all that much. Data speeds are still sufficient enough for my needs and at home I have it connected to wifi anyway.
Never tried MMS since I dont message over cell networks.
Oh and my sim and data plan is LTE provisioned. I think the recommendation is to use 'phone' APN with non-LTE sims and 'pta' APN with LTE sims. I'd recommend just set it and forget it. No point obsessing over it.
Another tip I've heard is to try to restart the phone after every APN change for the changes to *really* take effect.

Today I switched to the non-LTE 4G plan.
My APN is as follows:
APN: phone
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
APN type: default,mms,supl,hipri,fota,admin
APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6
I'm lucky to get 1.5mbps. Seems pretty awful to me.
AT&T has been having outages in Manhattan today, so I'm hoping that has something to do with it. I had to really drill into the guy to get him to give me a non-LTE provisioned 4G plan, hoping that would help. It obviously hasn't.

Not that I have a ATT sim directly, I use Straight Talk - ATT sim. I was able to get 4-5mbps download and 1-1.5mbps in Flatiron district. Approximately the same in Jersey City. Park slopes it was a little slow.
Again I am on a MVNO based on ATT so orignal ATT phones should get better speeds. I use the APN att.mvno

Do you know if non-LTE 4G plans/sim lets you access the HSPA network? I was told by (rather rude) sales reps at my first attempted AT&T store that they will give data plan with 4G access only to their "branded" phones.
AT&T hasn't given me issues thus far, but man, getting service working on the N4 has been such an ordeal! I have had to storm out of two stores because the sales reps wouldn't even agree to do anything with my phone because "it is not an AT&T phone" and were downright rude. One of them even suggested "there are always other networks you can go to...". I had to use my friend's 4G phone to get myself a free LTE capable sim.

Yes, they have two 4G plans. One is Smartphone 4G LTE and the other is Smartphone 4G. The non-LTE 4G plan supports HSPA+.
I had to argue with a tech support guy over live chat for ages and eventually ask for a supervisor. The chat log kind of makes for funny reading.
Unfortunately, after all my needling, I feel kind of like an ass. It didn't seem to help at all.
Also note, if you get a non-LTE 4G plan, you have to use the phone APN. The pta APN will only work with LTE plans (so far as I know).

I believe so, yes. I do find AT&T's variety of data plans a bit confusing though.
I've seen this come up on several threads and I get chats about it all the time. I work for Consumer Data Support at AT&T. This is not an official AT&T statement, just trying to help out my fellow Nexus users. This will only apply if you have an actual AT&T account, not pre-paid service or third party service. When you get your N4, you need to have an AT&T microSIM that is either active or new. Any SIM that was used previously and taken off of an account is no good.
Call or chat in to AT&T and tell them you need to update your equipment. Give them the IMEI (dial *#06#) and the ICCID from your SIM if it's new. Your IMEI should come up as an LG E960. Tell them to update your data plan to HSPA+. If you're already on an android-based LTE or HSPA+ data plan then you're good to go on all this so far. Changing the data plan will not kick you off of a grandfathered data plan (ie unlimited data). Oh, and of courese, you will only get HSPA+ speeds if you are in the right coverage area.
The most important part is the next step, the reason everyone's getting crappy speeds is the APN. LG programed the default AT&T APN as wap.cingular, that's an old APN. Use the following settings and restart your phone. You should be all set.
Name: AT&T
APN: phone
Proxy:
Port:
Username:
Password:
Server:
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS Proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type:
APN type: default,supl,mms
APN protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified
*On another note, if you're trying the LTE hack, you will need to have an LTE data plan on your account. Which means you need an IMEI for an LTE phone (one that AT&T will recognize) on your account for them to add the LTE plan. Once you've got that use the same APN settings, but change the APN from 'phone' to 'pta'.
I'll be happy to answer any questions on this, however if you want AT&T policy info or to ***** about your service I'm going to tell you to go to the AT&T website or to call 611.

Hey man...this kicks ass. I'm REALLY hoping this solves my odd network issues. I can surf the web and use Spotify/Pandora, among other things, all day no problem but Facebook rarely works (yet I get notifications...), I can't SEND email (yet I receive it...) and the speedtest app errors out after the ping test.
Can you get me that MMSC? PM...text message...whatever, I don't care. Hoping this would fix these couple issues and make my phone perfect!
thanks so much...i have like 5 apns and i will try this one.:good::good:
Thanks for posting this, it's appreciated! These settings have been floating around the forums though, with some slight differences. For example, the settings I'm currently using came from the "how to get 4g speeds on AT&T" thread in the general section. They're the same as what you posted except for these entries:
APN type: default,admin,fota,mms,supl,hipri
APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN roaming protocol: IPv4/IPv6
Will the differences in these particular settings actually make any difference in the real world?
Oh, and the MMSC setting is: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net

I don't see the IPv6 making a difference unless you're using something that requires it. As far as the APN type, what I posted is what I've been using, I'm not really sure what function those other types imply.

I've been trying every combination available and the typical data I get is 3M down and 1M up. Occasionally can get up to 5m down. Coming from a Skyrocket that got 20+ this is a real bummer.
Is there any advantage to running the APN at "phone" versus "pta"? Doesn't seem to change the download.
Setting IPv4/IPv6 was what was causing my data to drop out when leaving WiFi. The phone would be in this constant loop of data on/off until I toggled airplane mode on and off. One I changed the settings to IPv4 only, I haven't had an issue in weeks.

If you still have the LTE plan on your line, the PTA APN should work fine. I haven't personally tested it though. You can always change it to phone and test it out. The other settings are the same between the two.

I did have problems using IPv4/IPv6 as well, that was on StraightTalk. Not sure how it effects devices on AT&T, based on this though I would recommend keeping it on straight IPv4 unless 6 is needed.

That doesn't quite work. I'm on a shared data plan (unlimited everything), but AT&T will not (or cannot) upgrade the data plan for 4G unless you have an IMEI number of a phone they recognize as 4G capable.
After I got my phone I went into an AT&T store to get a new micro sim card and activate the phone on the network. When I got home I noticed my download speeds were only 0.01Mbps!!!! Did some research and found the APN was for a 2G phone. I created new APN configurations for both "phone" and "pta" with all the proper settings. I can now see a gray H above the signal bars, but download speeds are still below 3M because the data plan is throttling me to 3G speeds.
I called twice to AT&T's call center and went back to the AT&T retail store to ask them to update my plan to HSPA+, but every time I give my Nexus 4 IMEI number, they say they cannot change the plan to say Smartphone for 4G... all they can give me is a smartphone data plan for 3G. AT&T's database for IMEI numbers does NOT recognize a Nexus 4 as 4G capable so their system will not allow reps to change a customer's plan to 4G. I've reported this to Google support and they are checking into it.
Kinda sad to think all these Nexus 4 customers getting a great phone, but then having poor data speeds when using AT&T. Even the need to create new APNs is impossible for most people... how would a normal person even know to do that? So they are using a fantastic phone, but with a wap APN and 2G speeds! How stupid is that?
If you work for AT&T, can you explain how to get AT&T to recognize that a Nexus 4 is a 4G phone and allow setup and configurations to support the phone properly on a HSPA data plan?

If your previous phone was a skyrocket(LTE capable device), I'm assuming your plan is provisioned for 4g. You do realize you wont get the same speeds with the N4 vs skyrocket no matter what settings you try.

I'm on the DataPro plan with my N4. If they can't switch your plan to an appropriate HSPA+ here's what you can do;
Walk into an ATT store or Best Buy(BB) and grab the IMEI number from one of their 4g capable phones(demo unit). Call them back with that IMEI and they can switch it.

Right, the IMEI must be recognized by the system as HSPA+ / LTE / Etc to get the right plan.

The H data tag is for HSDPA, it's still 3G just better, but not quite HSPA+. I usually have H, and the phone will cycle between H and H+ depending on what I'm doing.

This is odd, how long ago did you try contacting us? Back in Dec when the N4 came out, we did not have the IMEIs, so this would definitely happen. LG has since sent us the IMEI range though, so all of the N4's should come up as LG E960s and have the right data plan. If you're on a Mobile Share account, then as long as the phone is listed as 4G you're all set. Try chatting in via the website and request to talk to someone in CDS, the data support team is your best shot at fixing something like this.

I'm aware of that "hack" and even mentioned it to call rep, but they said it was illegal to do it. I also had a heated discussion with an AT&T supervisor over the issue... even though I'm paying for 4G speeds and have a phone they didn't need to subsidize I still can't get them to accurately update their N4 records nor just change a data plan setting in their system to allow me to use what I'm paying for... extremely frustrating!
Google and LG really should take some responsibility for resolving the problem since they are selling the phone.

Does your H stay gray or turn blue like the bars? I'm assuming the gray means HSPA is available, but blue means it's actively using 4G.
I contacted AT&T yesterday... got the N4 on Thursday two days ago. The phone does show as LG E960 on my account online, but my data plan just shows "Smartphone", not "Smartphone for 4G" like my son's One X+. Both my son's phone and daughter's iPhone 5 can pull data down at 5M each while mine is lucky to get 3M... all in the same location in our home.
We're on a Mobile Share plan... and I asked both the tech and supervisor if I could be sent to higher level support... no can do they said... told me I need an IMEI number for a 4G phone to change the data plan. Will a rep just send me to CDS by just me asking?
Bottom line is something is STILL not set up properly within AT&T for N4 customers. Why was there only one APN for the phone and it was wap 2G? Why can't someone configure my data plan for a 4G phone without me tricking them with false IMEI numbers? These are things your average customer will never even know to do.

Well, I would call back and speak to someone else. I'm using the IMEI number from my SGS2(i777) without any issue.

Does your H stay gray or turn blue like the bars? I'm assuming the gray means HSPA is available, but blue means it's actively using 4G.

The data tag does not turn colors, it will still be grey on H+ as well.

Those are both LTE phones, the mobile share plans have less complicated codes. The only two options are LTE and everything else, if you are on the 'smartphone' plan then it should be right. 3mbps down is low, but it's still an 'acceptable' HSPA+ speed.
and I asked both the tech and supervisor if I could be sent to higher level support... no can do they said... told me I need an IMEI number for a 4G phone to change the data plan.

Yea, if you ask to transfer they should sent you over. The only time transferring becomes a problem is if you have a company / school discount code on your account. Don't ask me why it matters, something to do with the agreement I imagine. But, it limits transfer options. The APN that LG defaulted to is still in use and works, you can pull 3G on it.. it just doesn't work as well as phone. Like I said in the OP, I have no idea why they used that one. Every N4 chat I've had though, my customer has reported better speeds immediately after switching to the phone APN.

To your last question, the answer is simple. Because you didn't buy the phone from ATT and sign another 2 year contract, they could give a crap about wasting energy to properly resolve your issue.
I went through something similar when I first got my N4. A supervisor basically told me, "because the phone wasn't built for their network(didn't buy from them), they could not guarantee results regarding data". WHAT?? I simply told them, it has absolutely nothing to do with whether the phone was "built" for your network, it accepts the SAME bands, as YOUR NETWORK, end of story!!

Thanks! I've gotten more information from you than several calls and visits to AT&T. Oddly, I just did a speed test and now I'm getting 5M downloads (matching the One X+ and iPhone 5) so maybe a APN change finally is working for me. I'm using the "phone" settings. I'll be satisfied with these speeds, but it still doesn't resolve a bigger problem that other N4 newbies will experience. I had to create the APN myself... and even knew to check these forums for help... something most customers will never do so they will be stuck with poor data performance on a great phone.
Anyone using att/straight talk ?
What are your APN settings ?
My data is unbearable Slow!
I have to use WiFi to do anything!
On my old HTC inspire I avg 5-7down...

Are you sure you have 4G (HSPA+) or even 3G AT&T service for that matter in your area? A lot of rural areas are only 2G on AT&T's network. And a word of advice on ST AT&T running a lot of speedtests in one day will cause you to go over their daily limit resulting in you getting throttled down to 2G speeds for the reminder of your month. The daily limit is somewhere between 50 and 100 MB and one speedtest alone can use up to 12MB. People also report being throttled after hitting 1.5GB of usage in a month.
Edit: sorry just saw the H in your picture so it would appear you might be throttled by AT&T if your settings are right. Not sure if the H would still show up if your throttled as I've never had it happen to me. So not really sure.
Here are the APN settings I use

Are you on AT&T SIM, or T-Mobile SIM?
First, I would go to APN settings and try "Reset to defaults" from the options menu.
If you still have issues check the settings against http://www.straighttalksim.com/support.php #4 Update Settings.
Lastly, check one of the many threads already posted in the Nexus 4 General forms;

Then I would think you're being throttled.
That's horrible then. I've only used a total of 663Mb of data (3g/4g) .. Use WiFi mostly
I think I need to contact straight talk then.
I would use T-Mobile Sim . but about 4yrs ago I had T-Mobile. & It sucked in my area

I have confirmed calls from straight talk.
I am throttled to 0.26 MBS (avg)
They are now throttling after 1gb or a unsaid amount per day.
Paying your bill will not lift this.
Supposedly letting your service expire. Then paying your bill will lift the throttle until the limit is hit.
I am getting a T-Mobile Sim to try now.

Just for a call threatening to shut off my service.
This is fn bullshish !

i think AT&T has been tightening the reigns for their MVNOs. pretty much all of the ones that offered unlimited are now suddenly limited.
I told straight talk they need to send me a T-Mobile sim card for free. Lol
If they don't. I will be dropping my service!

I dumped ST and went with AT&T's own GoPhone plan for $50 a month. Its only 1 GB of data a month but at least I know the limit and its not some arbitrary number. Plus I was afraid of losing my phone number which I ported to ST for violating some obscure rule of theirs like streaming video. Also their customer service is abysmal to say the least. Would love to go to T-Mobile but it sucks everywhere in Michigan and their new LTE ain't going to fix that as the state is 99% rural and will never get it let alone HSPA.
is there a way to bypass throttle?
So I have seen in some threads that turning data on and off as well as airplane mode tricks the system. But it does not work for me. Any one know how to do this and how can I stop them from knowing how much data I'm using?
Get T-Mobile Truly Unlimited
30gb this month so far and still getting 14mbps
[LG NEXUS⁴] [LIQUIDSMOOTH] [MATR1X] [POETIC BLK BUMPER] [APEX PRO] [TAPATALK PRO]
Lol nice..
Ajay note their is no way to "trick the system"
Your just sol
