[PSA] EVO Shift Gingerbread Root Status. - EVO Shift 4G General

I've seen A LOT of people ask the same question... "can I root my Shift if I took the Gingerbread update?" or "Can I downgrade to froyo and then root?"
Just to eliminate any confusion
Update: Thanks to otaking71 and scaryghoul you can now downgrade your hboot and use the froyo root method

I'm waitin for that temproot app you talked about the other day joeykrim said it should be pretty simple to write a script to run it at boot or just after the phone boots up so it's just a wait and see thing.

What's best way r00t for new Evo

Well I've read through the wiki and I'm still lost... what's the best way to root a new Evo for 004 hardware? I've been told Unrevoked is good but I've also read threads that it doesn't work with 004. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

I heard they updated unrevoked to root 004.
Search the dev section. You will find the root guide.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
it is not the easiest way.. but it will teach you want you are doing at each step and why.
uses unrevoked and amon_ra
these are solid.. and will be great for future mods.
Unrevoke is the easy way off rooting, but make sure to have hboot drivers install( windows only) before rooting
sent from my evil evo!!
No worries
I use Unrevoked all the time and it works flawlessly on Hardware 2 through 4 phones. Just make sure you download the latest version at:
http://unrevoked.com/#evo
Other methods as mentioned above work too but can be somewhat complicated. In the end, they all use Unrevoked to achieve S-OFF.
Add one more vote for Unrevoked.

the all in one root method. search the dev section for it. very easy & simple.
Ha... I'm familiar with Adb, have Android SDK setup on ubuntu and windows, but the sheer amount of info here for the Evo, its overwhelming, a lot of defunct procedures and conflicting info, I just didn't want to start down the wrong path. I'm seriously considering getting the Thunderbolt, I'm in the 30 day trial with Sprint and although I like the Evo with all the development here, the Thunderbolt is looking
awfully appealing... Cheers to everyone for your assistance...

Answer to question: NO!
There is a proven root method already available and its "stickied" right at the top of the forum. Only use Unrevoked if you plan to give your girlfriend a rather expensive paperweight.

But right off the hop it's highly probable that the current rooting method will be closed. There are a few ways we may be able to attain it so here's to hoping. We'll just have to wait and see what the devs can deduce once it's available.

Given how much better the new blur appears over the current one, I'd gladly give up root for the update.

Nope, nobody has found the exploit in it yet. if you do the update, you are stuck without root for now...neither perm nor temp work. I totally screwed myself.

The only thing I really NEEDED to be rooted for was tethering. So, for now I'm using PDAnet. It's only USB and Bluetooth, but good enough until somebody fixes the rooting problem. Otherwise i actually LIKE Gingerbread.
I just got a new shift from Asurion this past Friday and it did not have the update pre-installed, had Froyo

I just got a new one due to a bad speaker, and it's a refurb. Doesn't have the update installed, so if I get the ambition I'm going to have to root the new one today, and run the RUU on the old one later tonight lol.

Pay for the wifi hotspot?
i already pay 90 a month.. sprint gets enough. i tried tethering with usb using pdanet and then once it was connected i set up my computer as a router.. unfortunately pdanet's mtu setting is inadequate. wish i could revert to 2.2. but don't know how. just hope someone can break 2.3.3. i can still access bootloader. just remove the battery and volume down and power and that loads it but i can revert.and suggestions?
i did. im friends with the tech at mine and he said it wasnt a good idea.
You are going to have to be patient and wait for an exploit to be found like the rest of us. I'm about ready to re-activate my old Palm Pre and use it until this gets figured out...the wifi tethering works GREAT on it and it was EASY to hack/install and OTA updates don't kill it.

It's the tablet that's on par with the evo 3d in specs, and was released shortly before. Probably has some of the same programming as the evo 3d and the sensation.
Regardless, there are plenty of devs working on finding root for the evo, but it's not something tangible and it takes a lot of time and hard work. Sit back and be patient, and root will be found.
