New Galaxy SII owner on AT&T. - Galaxy S II General

So I bricked my Infuse 4g two days ago to my complete and utter dismay. I really loved that phone, but saw it as an opportunity to pick up the elite Galaxy SII i-9100. I purchased from Amazon and the phone should arrive Tuesday.
I'm VERY excited to receive this amazing device. Is it worth installing custom roms on this beast, or because of the horsepower under the hood would you say it's pretty much flawless out of the box? I really don't want to gamble bricking another phone I paid $500+ for.
Also, I've never used an unlocked device before. On At&T everything functions properly?
Lastly, I don't know much about phone hardware. How is the graphics chip on this phone for playing 3D games? Is it top of the line? Better than Tegra 2?
Thanks guys.

Got mine from Amazon last week. Hated it at first due to short battery life, but after a few cycles, it calms down. With an unlocked phone, you just put your SIM in and go. Everything just works.
I have not totally decided if I will keep it since I have a Nexus S coming this week, but it certainly is impressive.
I'm pretty sure you will love it.
Here is an HD video I took yesterday of a fire by my house. Pretty amazing stuff...watch in 1080p.

The phone is very hard to brick, as long as you don't mess about with pits and put a sgs1 pit in (3 times and counting that's happened)
The phone is good out of the box, custom roms are mostly for theme customisation, and other nice tweaks.
As far as the gpu, it's more powerful than the tegra2 but lacks support for some of the texture and shader types that some games use (aka they use non standard ones), chainfire 3d can work around this, and there are lots of threads on the issue.

I'm on dumphone Att $50 unlimited everything prepay.
So Internet data speeds are just crap.
Got a $35 Sprint Mifi and ride they're Wimax network.
SGSII flies...probably unlike any upcoming sG2's on the carriers.
Battery's a challenge, no doubt tho.
Need extended one to survive.

Right said. it's pretty much flawless out of box and custom ROMs are a go only if you want themes, that is changed looks. GPU is far better than Tegra 2, and if fact, the best on mobiles.

Yup! But depending on what rom the phone comes with you may want to flash a upto date stock rom as the newer ones do improve battery life quite a bit

That is what I noticed with my Infuse. Flashing one of the better built ROMs for that phone increased battery life a solid 30-40% over stock and it was very noticeable in day to day usage.
I've heard the SII is a MONSTER when it comes to battery consumption. So I guess on that front alone it's worth installing a ROM.
I'm telling you though, I'm admitting my n00bishness and sharing my concern over possibly bricking the device.

The SGS2 is virtually unbrickable, just don't put a .pit file in, or flash a SGS1 rom and pit (has been done, 3 times!).
There are really good guides to flashing roms using odin.

That sounds great. I saw Lite'ning ROM on the list and I really like the look. What do you guys think of that one?
Thanks everyone for the responses.

Question.
So I received my Galaxy SII and it's pretty much a work of art. I performed the APN settings fix and notice that my H+ icon is not always on. More often than not, it shows a 3G icon at the top.
My Infuse did not exhibit this behavior, it always displayed an H+ icon.
Does this mean the Infuse did not properly display when it was using a 3G connection and not connecting to the HSPA+ Backhaul network, or does it mean my Galaxy SII isn't properly connecting to H+?
Which is it?
Thanks guys.

Also, how do I know if I have the correct data plan for 4G?
I selected the 4GB data plan when I got my Infuse. 2GB isn't enough for me.

The SGS2 will swap between 3G and H+, dropping down to 3G to save battery life, and up again when needed.
Depending on the modem, it will swap more or less.
Its as intended, its a battery saving feature.

If you are getting H+ you have the right plan, AT&T "4G" is H+

Also does anyone have a link to the S2 USB drivers? I'm so far unable to find them.

Download the Kies...
I think it'll install your USB drivers

Working as intended It drops the HSPA+ connection when you're not using it and defaults back to UMTS (3G). It's meant to save battery, but depending on your usage pattern, it could actually negatively impact battery life with the constant disconnect/reconnects

I also came from the Infuse (selected after I destroyed my Captivate) believe it or not I really enjoyed the Infuse and I didn't realize it until I got the SGSII. I had loaded the Ginger flavor of the Infused ROM and things were great to me even stock with Froyo things ran well - decent speed and smooth (better than my overclocked Captivate) I am in the process of either returning the Infuse before 30 days or selling it after picking up the SGSII.
Now that I have the SGSII I miss the huge 4.5 inch screen but I am impressed with the speed and experience of TW4 as I have never used Touchwiz in the past. I got mine from Newegg (didn't have a seal on the box like others have said they noticed too) Less than an hour I had DG's Cog ROM on it since there were already a few things I didn't like (I'm picky) If I had to pick one to leave stock out of the box to enjoy it would be the SGSII hands down. As posted previously these are hard to brick and become a lot of fun to ROM, customize, and theme which turns into addicting. Enjoy!
*edit- I am also on AT&T - in my area the Infuse did stay on H+ more but I notice the same speeds from the SGSII (about 1 hour south of Atlanta Georgia) also the Infuse was better at retaining signal & seemed to drop in less areas where I normally drop a call. While I have both phones in my hands I do plan on making a video about them - NOT to compare but to point out a few pros and cons & share some experiences as I'm sure someone else will be in this boat too.

There in my 4shared, hit the icon in my sig.
Or you can get them from kies.

The switching from H+ to 3G is normal; it switches to H+ only when the connection is actively transmitting/receiving data. At least that's what I've seen & read here.
What kinds of speeds are you getting? In my neighborhood in suburban Atlanta, I usually get around 4 Mbps, but have gotten as high as 7.

I made a new topic as I accidentally forgot about this one, but my network speeds are pretty poor.
I'm averaging about 1-2 mbps where I averaged 5-7ish on my Infuse. This is with the APN fix and in the same areas in central NJ.

What modem are you using? As I have found huge variation depending on modem, from Down/Up 50Kbps/200Kbps (odd) to 400Kbs/215Kbps in the same place at the same time.
Here is all the data I have collected on modems, note this is for the 3UK network in the UK, but it shows what I mean.

Nexus One Experience with Rogers in Western Canada.

Hello Folks,
I am posting this thread after a very long time on XDA as I was not using any HTC device.I was using Iphone since it was launched in USA.Now I bought 3 nexus one for me and my family with very high hopes but after iserting my simcard into it since last week I am very much disappoined.beside other samll issues like less responsive touch screen the problem I am having is a cellular signal. I am using this phone in the same area where I was using my 3gs phone and it was giving me full bars. And with nexus one I am having a really hard time to get signals some time even no signal and my calls are being missed/droped.I believe due to this problem battey life of the device is not impressive. And that was the main reason of quitting Iphone as I wanted multitasking device with better bettery life.I spoke to nexus one support line for few times their response was good but I it did not help me as I am having same problem although they offered me to replace device.but the thing is I already have 3 devices and if they are giving me same problem.
All I am hopping is a new upgrade to fix this issuse and I have no idea if this gona be fixed with the software upgrade?.
Idea of this thread is to get feedback from other folks using ATT/Rogers version of Nexus one specially in Canada/Western Canada. And any advise /help form my experts folks in this respect.
Your taking time in reading this is much appreciated.
May Almighty Bless you all.
Thanks.
Unfortunately what they're saying is:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/22/google-no-longer-investigating-fix-for-nexus-one-3g-issues-ad/
I'm in Manitoba, Canada, this is my first 3G phone so I don't have much to compare to. I've had maybe a couple calls dropped, but doesn't seem that bad...
However, I did try using the app called Antennas and everywhere in my city it always says "3g support is very limited"
I'm in western Canada using the Nexus One as well, and I too switched from an iPhone 3G. My initial impression was similar to your's where I felt like the touch screen wasn't as responsive and signal not as strong. As time passed I quickly forgot about all that and with the exception of the awkward response area of the bottom buttons, I'm starting to think that the N1's touchscreen is actually better for some stuff. I still wish Android had inertial scrolling with the snap-back effect like the iPhone though.
When Opera Mini came out for the iPhone I put my sim card back into it so that I could try it out, and after the end of the day I couldn't wait to get back to the N1. I don't know about your usage, but when I have push Gmail setup on the iPhone I can't make it through a day without on a single charge, so I think the N1 battery is much better.
Signal strength felt poor at first, but I think that's just because of how it's reported by each phone. The iPhone seems much more generous and will show more bars for the same signal strength as the N1. The only thing that still bugs me now is how much effect my hand has when holding the phone near the bottom. Never did I have to think about hand placement with the iPhone, but I've adapted to that now.
Im from western canada too, medicine hat to be exact. I, as you all, came from an iphone. I had a 16gb 3gs. Where i work the receiption is horrible. With the iphone i would have to have the phone placed on a certain corner of my desk to make sure i got signal.
With the nexus, its slightly better. I get minimum signal but its constant thoughout my office.
Compaired to a iphone, this phone is the cats meow. I love the nexus and will never be returning to an iphone again. It has a better screen, more responsive touch, is fully customizable and i get ~28 hours of battery. Thats right, 28 hours. Not 6 if im lucky like the iphone.
I have the AT&T N1 which also supports Rogers and I am on Fido in Vancouver,
(it also uses Roger's network) ,
Mine experience with the signal is awesome in my case, 95% of the time i am getting H, and 5% of the time it drops to 3G (mostly when I am doing nothing) but will quickly switch back to H when I start to use it again. I have not seen it with E yet.
I have tried it with WCDMA perfered, WCDMA only, now I am on GSM Auto(PRL) and it doesn't make any differences on internet speed according to my speedtest app, it's usually around 1Mb ~1.4Mb....occasionaly it drops to 600kb for one test.
The only problem I have is I am unable to achieve the 1% / hour battery drop rate some people are claiming even with the help with juicedefender and UV/AVS kernels......
Hi Folks ,
I really appreciate all of you for your feedback and advise.I hope that more peoples will share their experience here. One thing I would also like to share is that I am using home rom and did not go for bootloader unlocking and on my phone problem I have is with the cellular signal.my data signal is always on 3g as I am in city of Calgary. My son got his nexus one bootloader unlocked and installed ceynogen 5.06 rom installed I used his phone aslo for a day and only difference I noticed is that it shows "H" when u do browsing on data and otherwise is stay 3g.but with home it always show " 3G " sign and never to to "H" .but when you check details of connection it tell you that it is connected HSDPA.
If anyone else noticed the same? or anyone else getting H sign with home rom?
your views/experience regarding Home vs Ceynogen rom are also appreciated.
I am still looking for the actual benifit of having ceynogen rom over home?as I did not see any difference.
Thanks once again.
My Bell service sucks, but it's Bell so it normally sucks anyways.

No, that's been discussed a lot. The stock rom never shows an H. And the custom roms only show an H when actually downloading data. Otherwise it always idles on 3G.
On your stock it does the same, idles on 3G, and switches to H for download. But there is no icon for it.
Why are you posting the same thing it two different forums?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=676479
Anyway, on the stock ROM the 3G icon doesn't change to H like it does on cyanogen and others. It still connects at the same speeds though.
yeh, I am posting in two different forums, as I was not sure where to go.Thanks for your feedback. Its helping me a lot.
Thanks once again.
Only other phones I have to compare to are my Curve 8900 and my HTC Magic. With ANY phone in my apartment there are areas with shoddy reception due to having concrete walls in an older building. To be honest with you my N1 has been the same, if not better than any of my other phones in this building. In the hall, it's inevitable that it will cut off. In my apartment I can get reception anywhere, which is more than I can say for my girlfriend's Samsung and some other friend's phones in the building. We all use Rogers, by the way. And I'm in Toronto.
Not that there was a whole lot of differences, if any, in manufacturing as time went on (aside from the whole dust under the screen issues), but.. when did you get your N1's?
Jim

I have both in hand and am willing to answer questions comparing the two if anyone has any.

If I had a video camera besides the phone I would do a walkthrough demo'ing it, but omg it is beautiful. The default home launcher that comes with it is as horrible as it gets so I used Launcherpro to remedy that. Other than that though, how the phone dialer is laid out, the contacts screen layout, and even simple things like text messages are unbelievably polished. You will not be dissapointed with the Sense UI on the mt4g.
EDIT: Ehh, what I was gonna show in the video was pretty basic and I thought someone must've done this already so before doing anything I looked up videos and found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNr-ku3-O0g It is exactly the same software I would've shown you except he's running it on the Nexus One and he goes a lot more in depth than I would've

Well when I bought it, it came out of the box with only 30% charge. So I went to a Starbucks before class and it charged pretty well in about 45 mins (don't know the percentage but maybe like 75%). I used that from 5pm til 11pm when I got home. At that point it was giving me low battery warnings, but I'd say that was fair after some pretty heavy usage. I spent the whole day mesing with settings and trying to get a feel for the phone. I downloaded about 20 apps on HSPA+ in NYC and about 4 or 5 full length albums on Thumbplay over wifi in school. I also browsed the web and ran speedtests (got about 4Mbp/s down, 1Mbp/s up). Overall the battery did pretty well and so far is the least of my worries, if I could think of any.. I'd take the mt4g battery > Vibrant battery any day.
How is the overall feel of the device? Weight wise? Does it really look like a device for a 14 y.o. or it is a decent design?
How is the screen? Does it really make a lot of difference b/w SAMOLED on the lowest brightness vs MT4G on auto?
I am sure the OS interactions feel faster on it, but is it really noticeable in the everyday use?
Well, would you trade/sell your vibrant for the mt4g?

The actual device is a lot sexier than than dummy displays of it and better looking than photos do it justice. It is a bit heaver than the Vibrant (but what isn't lol), I think it's the perfect weight. It doesn't look like only a teenage device; I think it could appeal to anyone of any age.
Now the screen - a lot of people say the Vibrant's screen is better, which it is and I love it, but I think it was overdone. Why? Because the entire 2 months I used the phone, I used it at the lowest brightness which was still too bright. The mt4G's screen can get REALLY dim, which is nice at night because it doesn't hurt your eyes. I'd say the Vibrant's screen at the LOWEST brightness setting is about the mt4G's display at around 30% brightness. Not a bad thing. The colors are beautiful - they're as good as you need them to be and not overly saturated.
The difference between interactions so far is notable. Everything is so smooth that I don't worry anymore about hitting the buttons too fast and the phone not keeping up.

Lol. I made that decision last night after using the device about 4 hours. I sold my Vibrant and it's in the xda marketplace right now. Definitely keeping the mt4G.
I was thinking about waiting til Nov. 8th or 11th to see what Samsung has in store for us, but I'm very disappointed that their priority seems to be putting out new devices over supporting their current ones so I went with HTC and the mt4G here.

So essentially "HSPA+ upgraded" phone but same speed? Doesn't sound like a winner for me. Can't wait to see some upgraded HSPA+ networks able to push out that type of throughput to phones which support it. Kinda makes a 4G phone moot at this point if you can't take advantage of it.
Good to hear about the responsive UI, although we can achieve that with any ROM from Sombionix or Eugene. But it's a plus to have that experience out of the box for what...95% of the people who don't know what a ROM is. Anything that can get more people on the T-Mobile bandwagon = more money to T-Mobile = more money for infrastructure = happy people.

I wonder about the usefulness of speedtest. Yesterday my brother and I were at dinner and we tested our phones, his Nexus One versus my Vibrant. I was pulling down 3+ mbps and he was getting half that, even though in theory we should be pulling the same speed.

In theory is correct but the antenna assembly and the radios are different, therefore it's not exactly comparable and speedtest most likely has it correct. One thing that I have noticed is that my IP will be assigned to LA, San Fransisco, and even once Pittsburgh randomly. Don't know why this happens, but a reboot puts it back in the correct IP range for my area. That might have affected the test that night.
I've got this site bookmarked on my phone if I need it: http://whatismyipaddress.com/
If I ever do a speed test and find a low throughput the above reason is usually why.

Ordered mine yesterday, I am disappointed at the level of support the galaxy series has received from Sammy, I believe after this froyo update Sammy will wash their hands of this devise and move on,
I am told that the mt4g has an upgrade waiting right out the box, Now that’s what I call Support. Also rumor is mt4g will be the first to get Gingerbread upgrade.
Did it come with the new tether app? The TMO one?
If not, that might be the OTA that is being rolled out.
I was actually thinking of getting an HTC device, seeing how they got it pretty much under the belt the Android, but the new tactics with the provider that locks the phone down from root, and RW NAND keeps me at bay.
Wish I was a bit bolder when Nexus One came out, and got it, I just didn't like the marketing pitch that it was an iPhone killer, but it did nothing to decrease the popularity of the Apple product , it did increase the popularity of the Android though hopefully Vibrant is going to staying with me for at least 2 years.

As far as I can see, the app fixed a glitch with the address bar in the browser and that's it. Maybe there's some other bugs it fixed that I hadn't even noticed yet, but that's a good thing. The wifi hotspot and wifi calling apps were on it out of the box already.

I'm not a fan really, but I tried it and it's not bad at all... Pretty addicting and the graphics are nice. The Monopoly game that comes with the phone btw is sick! The graphics are as good as I've seen in a game and the gameplay is smooth. I was impressed because at first I just looked at it as bloatware to ignore, but it's "keepable." The game is by EA btw.
I had the opportunity to play with 4g, the phone is very nice. Personally I can't see myself with a phone that I can't root or flash, I mean that's why we come to forums like this. If we get root for the 4g I will be the first to get it. But as of right now I love what we can do, and what's coming with the vibrant.

Atrix, vibrant, or captivate which one should I get

I currently have an iPhone 4 but want to go back to android which should I get? I am on AT&T but looking to buy out of contract from selling my iPhone so I wan the atrix but I love the screens of the samsungs. I would get the nexus s but I am going to switch to tmobile in like 2 or 3 months. So I will just wait till I move or get the galaxy s 2 in that time
And I believe the vibrant can work on AT&T 3G so any idea which phone I should get for these 3 months
I can get the captivate for 150 but I want to know if it is worth dishing out 400-500 for the atrix and yes I did got to AT&T today and mess with both phone but still ify so anything can push me over the edge

Atrix (10 char)
My custom mod captivate blows this atrix out of the water. It literally does nothing my captivate cant already do. Not to mention my captivate can produce the color YELLOW... Oh and my captivate can actually use the HSUPA network... unlike this phone which was a bait and switch 4G phone that produces half the network speed of my iPhone and captivate. Capped upload speeds of 180kiloBITS per second is dial up age speed. Yes thats kiloBITS not bytes...
This phone is a gimmick piece of junk to be honest. I wanted to love it... but there is nothing about it that I want to keep.

Well my opinion is going to be pretty much the opposite of the first reply, but I think it depends on what you're trying to do ultimately.
For someone who does a lot of heavy, and I mean heavy usage with the phone over a variety of applications, the Atrix is amazing; I love everything about it.
Amazingly fast and it doesn't slow down it close applications when I'm using a lot of things at one time.
The pixel density is great as well; everything is more condensed and compact.
The build is great, and overall I'm pleased with the phone coming from a rooted and ROMed Captivate.
Rooted/ROM Captivate
Rooted Atrix
Out for 2 days but has a locked boot loader. Not to mention you only get 30 days from purchase to decide if you want it. It hasnt done anything out of the box but disappoint. And trust me, I really wanted to love this phone. It did a great job of turning me off.
The decision is ultimately up to you. However, I love my Atrix compared to the Captivate (Brother-in-law has it) I use my Atrix heavily over the day, using the mobile hotspot (with the custom APN), browsing, playing music, etc. My battery is still good by the time I get home from college or work.
Moto seems like it will be addressing our bootloader problem (for good or bad I have no clue, but any response is better than none). So hopefully those troubles will be over soon.
Also, psufan, I don't know where you live but I'm getting 320 kilobytes a second. Constantly.

Unless you are on an actual 4G enabled market (there are 6 of them) its impossible for you to be getting this since HSUPA is turned OFF in the modem firmware. You are getting 320 kiloBITS not bytes. iPhone 4 gets 1.5MB for comparison. If you were getting kilobytes you would have one of the fastest uploads on the market - which you dont.
I would just wait for the Galaxy S II but if you're going to be switching to T-Mobile soon then you may want to consider the Nexus S as well.

Got the atrix on launch day. I will be returning it tomorrow and going back to my vibrant until the galaxy s2 is out. I like this phone don't get me wrong but there are just more things that I dislike about it than I like about it. This phone is definitely not worth keeping and extending my contract for another 2 years thats for sure.
I agree I like my customized Captivate much better. I understand the dual core is buggy and there will be fixes with no doubt about that but the deal breaker is Motorolla's OS interface and screen. I like captivate screen and OS interface much better. Once you go AMOLED it's hard to go back to a regular screen.
I'll maybe returning my Atrix and wait for the Galaxy S II. I did take in consideration the Atrix has a faster processor and will get faster with newer OS but Galaxy S II will have a bigger and better AMOLED screen. By the time they make an Android OS to take full advantage of dual processor there will be newer and better dual processor phones, hopefully with the AMOLED screen.
If I had to choose between the 3 phones you talked about, I'd go with the used Captivate if I was with ATT. If I was with Tmoble I'd go with the Vibrant. I'd save the upgrade option for up coming Android phones. This would my choice but not everyone is the same.
Id go with the atrix.
90% of the problems i keep reading on every forum come from Iphone users who dont know how to use android,
or people who do not want to take the time to find answers to their questions.
people who complain about moto blur are usually complaining about it because someone told them it isnt good. Moto blur is pretty much stock android with a different dock bar and some icons skinned differenly. Other than that is pretty much normal android. Any replacement launcher will do the trick is need be
the only real thing is the HSUPA ordeal, but thats on any AT&T phone, and as of right now but most people dont really need it anyways

Your custom Captivate still lacks processing power, 1080p video, HDMI port, GPS that works, readable text, true WHITES (non oversatured colors), front' facing camera, HSPA+, 1/2 the ram and only DDR (instead of DDR2), official release beyond 2.1, decent docks, crap battery, etc. The UPLOAD cap is not because of the phone and it is temp thing anyways. Wait until applications start requiring dual-core processing/ram requirements and we will see how well your Captivate holds up.
So back on topic.... Ya I say get an Atrix.
Wait for SGS2 -- the screen will be *much* better and the locked Atrix kills half the point of Android (true customization).
galaxy s is so 2010. get the atrix or wait for the galaxy s2.
I think the Atrix is a really nice phone, but I too think I am going to return mine and go back to the iPhone 4 until the S2 comes out.
If I were going to exchange it for a phone now I would get the Inspire 4g. 2 of my friends have exchanged theirs for the Inspire 4g with custom roms and are very happy. They have all the animations in the world and are smooth as can be. They have full upload (unlocked hsupa). 4.3" screen with some better colors (personally I compared them at AT&T and did not like the over saturated colors. It reminded me of turning on Digital Vibrance on a video card). Slightly lower battery life, but it also doesn't take forever to charge, and of course a slew of custom roms.

something the Atrix (and every other phone out there) can do that the Captivate (or any SGS phone) cannot: reliable GPS turn-by-turn navigation

The SGS II isn't even out yet, I'm sure the GPS issue will be addressed on it.
i most likely will get a captivate till GS 2 comes out i am still considering
I have both phones and the captivate does not win in anything. I have no issues with my atrix screen. It looks just as good and has better colors then my captivate. It really depends on what you want to do. If you like flashing roms then get the captivate. If you want the fastest phone out with webtop features then get the atrix. The atrix will have custom roms in time but is it really needed? I use launcher pro on my atrix and it runs faster then any phone with custom rom. The cativate sucks stock. You need custom rom with lag fix to make it run good. The atrix does not need a custom rom to run good.

Wifi performance.

I used to own an Atrix and got rid of it because of the Wifi performance and a couple of other minor things. I'm wondering though, if I loaded a custom rom, could it literally improve the Wifi performance?
On my Inspire, the Wifi strength got better when I loaded cm7. Has anyone that's loaded cm7 on their Atrix noticed an improvement in Wifi performance?
I would literally have to hold the Atrix in landscape orientation to pick up signal at work where my iPhone 4 and Inspire can pick it up regularly.

I'd have to say that your particular phone had a problem. Mine has awesome wifi strength. Way better than my Tilt2 or iPhone 3GS....and way faster since it's "n".
Maybe I should use the term range not performance.
I had 3 different Atrix's and they had the same range and were all dead in the same spots.

Haven't noticed a difference in roms and wifi performance....
My 3gs hasvway better range then ny ATRIX ... so sad.
Still ... its not an issue since I have pretty good 3g coverage in my area.

Yes, unfortunately the atrix wifi range isn't that good. I have trouble picking up signal where others do so easily.
I wonder if the antenna is too small... would it be possible to "embed" a wire inside the back cover and connect it to the regular antenna to create a makeshift range extender?
Edit: iI think the phone's radio has influence over wifi reception, but it can only go so far. Might not be 'improveable' as much as we'd like to.

Very sad yes. I work in a lead lined building and have no service whatsoever, I completely rely on Wifi.
Sent from my microwave
That'd be your particular device's problem. Atrix got best wifi performance IMHO. Very fast and responsive. SpeedTest.net results shows that with the wifi at my home, my XT720 returns a speed of 7~8 Mbps where Atrix always returns 12~16 Mbps of speed.
I'd say the reduction in range is due to the improvement in speed.
My Atrix get's my wifi signal about 20m through 4-5 concrete walls, occasionally I've also noticed it get's it through 3 levels in my apartment building, though I don't have anything else to compare it too.

I doubt a ROM will significantly improve the wifi range on the Atrix, more of hardware thing IMO.
Same behavior for me at work too. My old BB 8900 can hold onto the weak wifi signal (around 80-90dbm) better than my Atrix. If I run too much data on wifi on the Atrix, the wifi will throw too many errors and disconnect. I ran logcat to see all of the fun stuff going on to figure this out.
Fortunately work is upgrading the wireless network soon .
There has been several radio firmware packages released since you got rid of yours I think. The latest AT&T one (1.77.30P) definitelly made things better all around for me.

The new radio helps the range a little vs the radio in 2.2.2 for me. The wifi disconnects less frequently, but it still disconnects from time to time. If you rely solely on wifi it's not worth it IMO.
My wifi is awesome and all I have are access to g routers. Speed and distance.
I voided my warranty and your mum.

Can someone compare their Evo 4G to a GSIII?

I am now out of contract and thinking about moving to Verizon (for the LTE network) and the GS3.
But I'm actually pretty happy with my Evo, with roms like CM9 and MIUI its a totally new phone. So if someone has used both the phones, I'd like a little feedback about the GS3-
does it feel much faster than the Evo?
how does signal strength, gps compare to the Evo? I saw this thread - http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/443782, which doesn't give me hope for the Samsung radios
is battery life better? Currently I can get 2 days with light use on MIUI
Basically, its get the GS3 now or wait for the next Nexus phone in Dec which will have JellyBean.
I have never had the pleasure of using a GS3, but overclocking Team D.I.R.T's Remics ROM, which is based on the GS3, is a very nice substitute.

The speed difference is pretty big in my opinion. Coming from the evo, things like scrolling and going in/out of apps is a big difference. Scrolling in the browser is so nice after using the evo. I'm still holing strong with my evo too, my roommate just picked one up though and its a great choice. The galaxy nexus with JB is a good option as well. Just through a JB rom on and your good to go. I know its not exactly what you wanted but just thought I would share......
MEZOCLONE
Due to poor battery life I never used my EVO for much more than phone, email, and texts.
My S3 battery is much much better, the phone is quicker, etc etc. Having said that touchwiz takes some getting used to, the Samsung keyboard sucks(using Swype beta now). If you enjoy running alternative ROMs then start on your EVO for now. If you enjoy having new fast hardware then pick up an S3 or oneX.

Do you have a G S III? The S III has comparable battery life and just a smidgen better than the LTE. Despite the polycarbonate body, the build quality is there. The device is smooth, solid in hand, and doesn't feel flimsy. In addition to not having an aluminum backing, it'll be less prone to signal issue, unlike I have seen with the LTE.
You cant even compare the two. Its like comparing a 1975 Cadillac Eldorado with a 2010 Nissan GT-R
All silly comparisons aside yes its WAYWAY faster GPS locks in fast and works great, and the battery is way better then my evo. I use both every day.
Evo=work
GS3=personal
Don't get me wrong, I loved my evo. I have had mine since Google IO when they gave them to us free. But come on the GS3 is current technology.

apples and oranges. my co worker has a GSII running cm9 and its stupid fast compared to my evo i can only imagine the gsiii is even better.
Picked my gs3 up today. There really is no comparison in terms of speed. Touchwiz blows hard, so I loaded up nova launcher right away.

I played around with my friends GS3 today and it is ridiculously fast and smooth. I tried overloading it with apps running in the background and it would not slow down. I will definitely pick one up for myself eventually.
I own both — just traded up
I actually on both phones. Contract on my EVO 4G just expired, and I decided to quit Sprint because the coverage just wasn't there in my neck of the woods. So I got a GS III with AT&T, and hated it for two days because it was giving me constant, nasty Wi-Fi dropouts. Then AT&T pushed out an update — which some people are avoiding because it nukes unified search, for legal reasons — but what's not getting much press is that it also solves a lot of connectivity issues. I suspect those issues were created by some kind of power saving attempt. In any case, I have LOVED the GS III ever since that update.
Unlike some other users on this thread, I really don't think that it "blows away" the EVO. But it's way faster and the screen is quite amazing. And it sounds like you're really tempted (just like I was). So let me just share my own feelings:
I'M SO GLAD I GOT THE GSIII! The Evo is still a way cool device, don't get me wrong. But the GSIII is the new world champ, and there's just no denying it. So go ahead do what you are longing to do anyhow, and nab it!
P.S. I've kept my Evo, by the way, even though it has no phone reception, and I joined xdadevelopers so I could learn how to root it and install CM9 like you did. So let me ask YOU — what thread or post should I go to first?
Check out hipkat's guide to the evo. It is in the stickies. Check out the smelkus amon ra recovery and if you go with cm9 you will want to partition your sd card with an ext4 partition. Do lots and lots of reading before you jump into all of this of course. Have fun!

You don't NEED to partition, just user preference really. Never felt like partitioning and never had a problem.

I'd have to disagree about the Evo LTE being "far away better" than the GS3. My sister has one, and as much as I love the screen (it really is as good as they say), I prefer the way the GS3 feels in my hand (except that it feels a little more fragile), and the extra gig of RAM will make a huge difference when I flash MIUI on it. The camera seems to be about the same quality judging by reviews, so that's a wash. The kickstand would be nice, but even when I wanted to use it on my OG Evo, I was barely ever in a place to set my phone down. Speed-wise, I have yet to see either phone stutter or lag (except that the XDA Premium app lags on the GS3 when scrolling through threads; seems to be a problem with cached/caching images, but I never had a lag problem on my OG Evo), and they use the same SoC, so they should be about equal anyway. As for UI, I'm going to put MIUI on my S3 ASAP and would have done the same with the Evo LTE, so that doesn't matter either. Things I like better about the Evo LTE are the capacitive buttons and lack of a menu button. Not a fan of the S3's home button, especially the fact that it wakes the phone.
As for comparisons to the OG Evo, it's a different experience altogether (crazy to say since they're both Android phones), not only because of the new hardware, but also because of TouchWiz. I could compare them feature-for-feature, but we all know the S3 will win or at least tie for every spec (except HDMI, I think; a proprietary MHL adapter complicates things, but since MHL is standard now, micro-HDMI cables are harder to find and expensive). The things that impress me the most about the S3 are the speed (obviously) and the battery life. 6 hours of screen on time is normal with the S3. My Evo died around the 2.5 hour mark. It makes a huge difference.
This is off topic, but I was curious exactly how long the Evo's battery might last with no use at all, so when I got my S3, I gave my Evo one last charge and set it aside. I turned on airplane mode after a couple hours but left Wifi on (more out of habit than part of the test), then turned Wifi off after another hour or so (when I remembered it was on and draining the battery), and it's been in complete airplane mode ever since. Well, it's been 9 days and 16 hours since I took it off the charger, and I still have 50% battery left. I honestly didn't think the li'l ol' Evo had it in him, even if it is just sitting idle. I'm pleasantly surprised, but I can't help but wish the battery lasted at least a tenth as long when using the phone as it's lasting now.
I was going to switch to Verizon since I'd rather have LTE speeds for the same price, but the locked boot loader is making me think twice.
gs3 kicks real arse, how can i compare them. evo is outdated afaik.
