Root/Upgrade to Custom2.2/Keep PRI 1.4

*******
Here is the latest just in and probably the best way to do it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748021
This thread claims they can roll back the PRI from the 1.3x to 1.4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748335
Below is the old way to do it and helped to get point in the right direction but do not use
This is huge if its true!!!
IF you did not root yet and did not upgrade to 2.2.
Then using Unrevoked 3 you can root, and then use simple root .2
upgrade to a custom rom for 2.2, keep your PRI 1.4 for the best 3g speeds, and get wifi tether!!!!
The post is at

New info from DeathBySnuggles post #4 below was able to after using unrevoked 3 then used simple root .2 and was able to keep PRI 1.4
This is HUGE

....... groundbreaking ..

Can I go back??? I want ROOT !!!!!!!!! Bad OTA 2.2 Froyo, BAD! I want to hit "undo"
I am personally running Ava's V3rA froyo rom and am running pri 1.40_003. There is a discussion about it in the development forum. I'm not sure if its an anomaly but I orginially rooted with unrevoked 3 then simpleroot. Not sure if it was just a glitch or what. I will know this weekend when I do the same to my wife's phone.

Enjoy the non full root of unrevoked. This is NOT groundbreaking right now. Unrevoked alone does NOT give you full root NAND access to write the system which is why some Roms will NOT work with it.
hUGE

Sorry to correct your ignorance, but from Unrevoked 3 and later, full nand unlock was added.....That's why in the OP it says
Code:
"Then using Unrevoked 3.1 you can root, upgrade to a custom rom for 2.2, keep your PRI 1.4 for the best 3g speeds, and get wifi tether!!!!"
. Pay attention bud.....

If this is infact the case then why do Devs still say Unrevoked is not a full root. you can do unrevoked and still upload some custom roms, but some will cause errors if not fully rooted.
I'd believe if it did in fact give full root then you wouldn't see every dev saying that if you dont have NAND then do one of the many manual unlocks in the dev section.
This is from the kernel thread directly:
netarchy said:
An important note for UNREVOKED users:
Unrevoked is not a full root, and there is a very good chance that if you're not fully and properly rooted you may run into issues not only with this kernel, but quite possibly several features in other custom roms.
I personally have no confidence in unrevoked, ESPECIALLY after unrevoked 2 screwed up 4g for a lot of people.
I highly advise fully and properly rooting your phone, complete with nand unlock.
For windows users, you can use SimpleRoot to root your phone.
Linux users can use Bash SimpleRoot.

If unrevoked did give full root accesss it would of been much more widely talked about on here and not just 1 person saying they noticed it. The 2nd person that reported keeping the pri, used simple root AFTER unrevoked and even still has an error at times though as its being discussed in another thread now.
I could NOT flash the fresh rom until after I used simpleroot. Unrevoked 3 was not enough.
The "error" that I still receive is when entering the bootloader there is a message that appears three times saying "no image found". And forgive my naivete but if the zip image is supposed to live on my SD card, it doesn't and never has. I've looked.
Despite the error, I have had no issue at all flashing roms, themes, kernels, boot animations, fonts etc.
Again, my process was root with unrevoked 3. Lived with that for a while. Then did the ENTIRE simpleroot process, step 1 included. Then I started successfully flashing roms. I'm on pri 1.40_003, prl 60669, and the latest .28 radio.

I used Unrevoked 3 based on step-by-step instructions found at unlockr.com. However, little did I know, even though one of the steps said I would have NAND unlocked if I followed instructions, I didn't have full NAND unlocked. So I went back and used toast's step 2 found in the development forum to unlock NAND. Now I've flashed Fresh 3.1.0.1 along with netarchy's froyoized-3.7.6b kernel and have 4G, free wifi, the works. So far no problems other than draining battery. My PRI version is 1.34_003. Phone is working super stupid fast at 4G speeds.
FYI the only downfall of the netarchy kernel (which I needed to get the wifi to work) is the camera goes back to 3mp, but who cares...that's still huge in my book.
Hope that helps

Was your camera set to 8mp before flashing netarchy's kernel? If so take a picture and check the details. Chances are the resolution is 3264x1952 which is 8mp. Lots of discussion about it in that thread.

im on fresh 3.1 with netarch 3.7.8b pri is 1.4 used unrevoked 3
RESULTS REPLICATED!!
I just followed the same process on my wife's Evo and she is now running Ava's V3rA themed with PRI 1.40_003.
Exact process:
1. phone was stock with the 2 previous OTA's installed.
2. Rooted with Unrevoked 3 (not 3.1)
3. Installed wireless tether, titanium, rom manager. Superuser = super good
4. Ran simpleroot .2 ALL steps
5. After each step I checked and the PRI was still 1.40_003 each time
6. Ran ROM manager and flashed Ava's V3
7. Ran ROM manager and flashed V3rA
8. Ran ROM manager and flashed themes and radio updates.

DeathBySnuggles: I had indeed had camera setting before flashing netarchy of 8mp....now with new kernel, I'm getting 2048x1216
But I'm not going to complain....with these settings I was able to take about 30 pics plus 5 4minute videos at a concert last night without running out of space on my sd card
Thinking about trying his new kernel, but I"m very happy with the way my phone is running right now, but will keep people posted if I do

Strange. Most people are seeing whatever they were set to before the kernel is what the camera is actually shooting. In fact, people are flashing the stock kernel, setting the camera resolution, then flashing netatchy's with success. But if you are happy with 3mp then no worries. I'm one of those I paid for 8mp I want 8mp dammit people!

OC the stock rom

Anyone who has done it or knows for sure a kernal to flash on the stock rom for perm overclocking. I tried on i thought was right and it soft bricked the phone until i figured out the correct kernal back to stock.
I had OC'd the stock rom before the bad flash using g script. Now i cant get that to work.
Im perm rooted s-off and subsidy unlocked.
Im sure ive missed it somewhere. But im so tired of searching and reading for days and not finding a direct answer to this.
hi matey, have you found a way of doing this yet matey?
Yes I did. I followed the g script instructions. Doesn't stick. On reboot though. Have to run the g script. Have mine clocked to 1.57ghz.
Stock T-Mobile G2 or Stock Desire Z? They have different kernels. Plus, the 1.72 Sense ROM has a different kernel from the 1.34.
I used the Godspeed kernel (along with SetCPU) on the stock Desire Z ROM (Bell Canada) and it worked perfectly. Used it for a couple months before I went over to CM7. This is for the Sense 1.34 ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847724
If you are on the Sense 1.72 ROM, this looks to be what you want (no personal experience with 1.72): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967153
If you have the G2, I believe a lot of people use pershoot's kernel. But I don't personally know if it works, since I have a Z.

Alright just gave this a shot and it work on the stock. Yes it works
No boot loop or soft brick+
Oh and you also can choose diff OCs between 806 and the max, unlike with g script

Its hard for people to help you if you don't give proper information, such as what kernel you tried, or even what version of the phone you have.
And if the guy that suggested baconbits helped you, how about thanking him?
Baconbits is the only kernal that works with the stock G2, I have been using it for 3 months, and it works great. You need to have a custom ROM to have the other OC Kernals.
I experimented more today with underclocking, and I pulled 16ish hours with medium use. I was amazed.

Yes, you should already be using SetCPU, its what I use. Others use "CPU tuner" (I think thats what its called). With either you can set the max-min ghz of your cpu from 245-1497.
Thank you to everyone who helped or offered help.
Sorry if i didnt give enough info. Guess I figured the experienced hackers would ask the new guys for more infor if it was needed.
good to hear baconbits worked for you. I remember trying to help you in another thread and thought I just made things worse for you, haha, so I'm glad you got it going.
now you just have to try and stop yourself from getting the custom ROM modding bug.. good luck with that.

Different kernel or no?

So currently im running the following.
Device: MyTouch 4G Black
Root: Permanent Root/S-OFF
ROM: Cyanogen mod 7.0.3
Kernel: Stock that comes with cyanogen
Radio: 12.52.60.25_26.08.04.30
Bootloader: Engineering bootloader
Yes I don't post here often. I actually had a MT3G i was going to root, decided i didn't know enough about it so i wanted awhile. Well a friend had JUST gotten his MT4G from an upgrade then gotten out of the contract with t-mobile and was able to keep his phone so i bought it for $100 seeing as i still had a slow MT3G and wasn't wanting to sign another 2 yr contract. Anyways i read enough on it and learned enough so i rooted it/flashed it.
Anyways I was wondering if I should flash a new kernel or not? I was thinking maybe faux's LV krnel? Any input is appreciated

If you want to change the kernel then check out demon speed kernel. Big selection of different governors and very quick and good on battery. If you're unsure about how to flash, just remember to wipe both caches only.

Permaroot and stuff, questions

OK first off:
Alrighty.... here we go. I am running Gingerbread 2.3.4.
The of the permaroot method says:
How to get S =off and superuser permissions
Make sure you are on 2.2.1 software and fastboot is turned off, usb debugging is turned on and phone not connected to computer via usb cable... before u attempt this.
Soooooo.... can I successfully permaroot and s-off running gingerbread using the permaroot threads information or do I need to do something else? Do I need to downgrade to froyo? If so how?
The reason I ask is I got my MyTouch 4g 2 months ago. Followed this thread to what I thought was exact. I ended up with fail pu and total brick. (Very very noob at that time, I am much more capable now.) HTC fixed the beast but I got it back with gingerbread. I really want to root this beast as I want to putz with the custom roms. I have an atrix so this phone is a spare (edge baby) but don't want to brick it again.
How (if at all possible) can I tell if I have the "bad chip" (which happened to me already with a bad eMMC)?
Primaraly I want to just get rid of the bloat and get a more streamlined phone. I really just want to dump all the bloat. So... should i get permaroot + s-off, is their a rom similar to an ASOP or just a vanilla gingerbread rom for this phone.
Any help is appreiated. Thanks to everyone out there.
Thanks.

S-OFF IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR GINGERBREAD 2.3.4 ON MYTOUCH 4G. you must downgrade to 2.2.1 to obtain root access.

VU is one of the most popular out there sense-wise. Really good battery life and smooth for a sense rom, afaik still on 3.0, but still very good, i ran it for a little while, if you want sense 3.5 tdj's runny remix is good, i got pretty decent battery and it's pretty smooth as well, and it comes with demonspeed kernel, always kickass

yes, it's possible, just need a way to root gingerbread 2.3.4 and get clockworkmod recovery on there.

I need some ideas for best set up plz

I'm coming over from CDMA hero forums.
My Hero setup was:
koushs hero deck ROM
jaybobs kernel
Juwes optimization tweak
What's the easiest root and unroot methods?
Basically I'm looking for best gingerbread ROM setup with a good kernel and any tweaks possible.
Id appreciate ur input, thx

I'm thinking you should wait for ICS OTA so the you can flash a custom ICS ROM. Unlock you boot loader now though as it wipes Storage. The you'd be all set and can put files on without worrying about them disappearing like my photos from when I first got the phone. Oops.
The are plenty of guides stickied in the development section. Just read those. It's all really easy to do on the NS.

Hey, welcome to the NS!
Follow this guide for unlocking your bootloader and instructions on how to root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782
The best GB setup is, as on any device, a personal thing.
I prefer MV ROM, it's a Cyanogenmod extended ROM with additional tweaks; together with franco's kernel. Many people like Matrix's kernel as well.
Some people like the MIUI ROMs because of their graphical capabilities (ie; the way they look).
I think the best you can do is play around and have fun with all the different flavors. You can even try the ICS alpha's, they're getting good and definitely good enough for daily usage.
Good luck,
Greetz

Since fastboot isn't included in the latest SDK download, if you don't have it already it can get kind of confusing trying to follow those instructions.
Here's a one-click root tool you can use:

Thanks to the three of you for taking some time to respond. I do appreciate it.

As an aside, if you have a nexus 4G, aosp's Ics ROM is amazing. Everything works well and I haven't found any bugs
