external drive / gamepad - Acer Iconia A500

I've been thinking of getting an android tablet for some time. This one (a500) is definitely top #3. I was wondering if someone could give me a definite yes/no if you can add external (usb) devices like thumbdrives and gamepads?
I have an external drive I keep my main media on. Problem is its a ntfs partition. Can it be rooted and a kernel module added for support OR is it supported out of the box? (at least read only)
I also have an old logitech gamepad I'd like to use on emulators/games. Can it be used, or maybe a ps3 controller?
I'd appreciate any help or suggestions. I've googled this and haven't found anything specific for this tablet itself.

USB accessories including gamepads should be supported on 3.1.
If not, use your bluetooth ps3 with "Sixaxis Controller" apps from the market. Try their compatibility checker first.

Download Drive Mount from Market and use it but your device must be rooted first.

I was able to use a sega saturn usb controller (also compatible with pc and ps3) on my acer. Nothing custom necessary.

That setup will be great when you need to be wired (on airplane). I'm going to try my ps3 madcatz controller too. It uses a usb dongle and 2.4 ghz wireless. The wiimote also works, but the base wiimote doesnt have nearly enough buttons

There was a thread when 3.1 1st hit the iconia. Xbox 360 wired and wireless (with dongle) work, the mad catz sf4 controllers work fine ( both pads and sticks), Saturn USB pads and clones, and well, that's what I tried myself

This method worked perfectly for me. My 1TB portable drive works perfectly.
I rooted with Iconiaroot and it was very easy and fast. One click to unroot too.

[GUIDE] USB Gaming on Nexus S

Greetings,
The purpose of this post/thread is to describe how to use a USB gaming controller on the Nexus S, which is now possible thanks to the work of fellow XDA member sztupy. Before proceeding, I highly recommend that you read his Galaxy S thread, especially the first few posts (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450298).
First, some demonstrations:
Using USB Host Controller app and Super Mario 64

1.) FLASH KERNEL AND DOWNLOAD APP
First things first, you will need ICS and to flash a kernel that has USB OTG support in it. At the time of this posting, some kernels with USB OTG are:
-steve.garon’s kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427352)
-mathkid95’s Matr1x kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1361477)
-Ezekeel's GLaDoS kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1336529)
If you do not know how to flash a kernel, please Google it. You will also need to download sztupy’s app “USB Host Controller” (https://market.android.com/details?id=hu.sztupy.android.usbhostcontroller).
2.) ACQUIRE USB CONTROLLER
Next, you will need a supported USB controller. The following should work:
-wired Xbox 360 controller
-Logitech DualAction controller
-Logitech WingMan RumblePad
-wireless Xbox 360 controller WITH wireless receiver
-wired Sony Playstation 3 controller (not yet tested)
...probably many others
3.) OTG SET UP
Thirdly, you’ll need a working USB OTG set up. Sztupy’s thread shows you a few ways of accomplishing this. Below is a (crappy) diagram of MY current working set up.

I think this is the best set up because you don't have to buy any fancy OTG cables or USB hubs. But that's just my opinion.
In terms of the order for connecting things, I find it works best if you connect the phone LAST.
4.) FINAL STEPS
Once everything is connected, open up the “USB Host Controller” app, select the “Settings” pane, and set the Operation Mode to “Auto-host” (if you are using a set up that involves an OTG connector/cable, then you'll likely need to select OTG mode instead). If everything went right, the app will close automatically and you should be able to navigate your phone with the controller. You are now ready to game!
Just a note with the 360 controller. The middle button will always flash on and off, and will not stay lit on one quarter of the circle as on an actual Xbox. AFAIK there's no way to fix this (unless you use tape heh).

I know it works perfectly on the mainline Linux kernel, but I'm having no luck finding how the drivers were implemented in ICS. I can't test myself just yet, still waiting for the otg cable and download mode jig to come in.

I can't say for certain, but I think it should work. I found another thread here: http://www.acertabletforum.com/forum/acer-iconia-tab-accessories/1014-what-game-controllers-work.html for the Acer Iconia tablet, and one user claims their original xbox controller works.
I suppose the only way to know for sure is to try it out yourself. Once you get your OTG set up and running, let us know how that works out for you.
Nice thread, very useful for me, I sold my wired 360 controller, and i thought i will buy a new one when i asked at sztupy's thread if the 360 controller would work with this method, he mentioned me about this thread, and i saw on the 1st page that a wireless controller would work with the receiver...luckily i have one of those but on the op says only it was not tested...so could anyone give me some info about that?

Well the reason I suspect that it will work is because I saw this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrTmsZIb0a8&feature=related. Since we now have OTG it is reasonable to assume this would work for us as well.
I tried looking around for a wireless receiver to test but unfortunately all stores near my area only seem to sell it with the controller.

hm...i'm gonna try it, so, i didn't understand the diagram show in the OP (from the dropbox link, i'm not too good in this), but would it work, if i use a USB Hub, connect the hub to the phone, a usb charger to the hub, and also the receiver?

Read sztupy's post here for some ways you can connect a hub: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21503413&postcount=2. As you can see, it is indeed possible to power the controller/receiver from the hub if you have things connected properly.
When you're setting up USB OTG/host for the first time, use a simple device like a USB flash/thumb drive to verify that your connections and everything else are working properly. Then you can try hooking up other peripherals like the 360 wireless receiver.
To be honest, I haven't had much luck getting USB OTG/host to work with a hub, which is why I went and created my own 'Y' cable. It really isn't that difficult to make, and it's cheaper than using a hub, provided that you have soldering equipment already.

Word of caution, the 360 controller wireless adapter draws a lot of power, i recall there being high incidences of it dropping out when plugged into PCs, so be sure to power it adequately.

woah...i really don't know anything about this electronic thing how should i do?
Just look at your charger and check the output rating. It should say something like: 5.0 V, 0.75 A. Ideally you'll want the second number to be higher (like 1 A for example).
As a point of reference, my wired 360 controller works fine on 0.7 A. But as tiuk pointed out, the wireless receiver may be more demanding.
But really I think you should be okay if you stick with the standard Samsung Nexus S charger. If you need more current for your peripheral, you can simply disable the current draw of your phone with the USB Host Controller app. This way, all of the current from the charger will be directed to the device instead of being split between the device and your phone.

Will Ouya support USB hubs?

Would be nice if could use a hub to run game controllers (USB arcade stick as example), thumbdrives and USB drives at same time.
Also nice if the device had built in support for NTFS.
Even better if the power line to the USB port could power the hub like a laptop, but that is probably being too greedy.
Update: I can find nothing that says it will or will not. I am leaning toward will, since makes not sense not to- in theory.
It should support USB hub, you can buy a hub that accept wall adaptor for extra power. As for NTFS not likely official support due to being a Microsoft propriety format, but there can be apps or modules to install that enable it, same as Android phones (Stick Mount + NTFS Mounter).

I think USB support is build into Android 4 and later. So if you have a power USB hub, you'll be fine. The rest, is just want does Android support or Ouya have build in. I think controllers, keyboards, and mouses will be fine. They may not support all keys or functions, but they'll work for the basic functions.
I just can't say about NTFS support. I think more than likely it may so that larger files can be stored and used for games. It'll possible we could have large and long games available.
The good news, we'll find out in about a month's time.
USB hub would be helpful, my only thought is for me the common user the only thing I might use it for would be an external HDD just for additional game storage space. I suppose though for the ability to also have a keyboard and mouse or other components connected we would then need a hub.

It will certainly not support NTFS out of the box, NTFS is a proprietary Microsoft format.
There might be kernel or use Stock Mount + NTFS Mounter.

I think it should, I don't see why not, though it might not work fully with some controller, especially analog and touch buttons, but I can't be sure. Knowing Ouya designed this for gaming they will probably make sure it work worth variety of controllers.

I am wondering if any controller will work besides their own. They are already apparently locking out the Play store and will lock out the Ouya store for rooted devices. Seems logical they would find a way to allow only their $50 controllers to work, since more expensive than most other options. If not, most people will buy cheaper options.
Perhaps they will allow keyboard map type devices and only analog control with their controllers. Kind of hard to lock all controllers out, unless they also do not allow keyboards.

Bluetooth controllers should work just fine. They just won't have all of the features that the OUYA controller will have.
Controller Specs:
Two analog joysticks, each with their own “button” (i.e. L3 + R3)
A D-Pad
Four face buttons (labeled O, U, Y, and A)
Two digital shoulder buttons (L1 + R1)
Two analog triggers (L2 + R2)
A menu button (to open the OUYA menu at any time during a game)
A touchpad (to mimic mouse/touch controls or to be used in games)
Player LED indicators (so you know which player a connected controller is set to)
Don't expect the two in red to be on aftermarket controllers for quite some time (and even if they do have a "menu" button, it likely won't work until someone makes an app for mapping).
The touchpad will make a functional difference if you're playing a game that requires touch input if you're using an aftermarket controller. You'll likely become rather stuck if it requires touch input.

The PS3 does not support NTFS. Even Microsoft's own Xbox 360 does not support NTFS. If the Ouya supported NTFS it would be the first console to do so.
So would a USB hub allow me to connect multiple N64 USB or multiple SNES USB controllers to the console? If not, what would I need to do this? Thanks

Well that's what we have the wonderful people of XDA for! :victory: :laugh:
Just my two cents... I have several droids that I've rooted and used Stick Mount with, and they all play very nicely with NTFS formatted USB drives. I also use a nifty little USB hub that has a plain jane USB plug on one side of it and a micro-USB plug on the other end... it works with either end (OTG adapter for USB A) and I haven't had any trouble with it on any of my devices. One other item of possible interest is the variety of common devices that Android will support with little or no extra effort from the folks at OUYA; I have a G-Box Midnight, which has a very crude firmware, based on ICS, and I keep a USB Mouse, USB Keyboard and Microsoft USB WebCam plugged in at all times, and they all worked with zero configuration on my part (the webcam captures 1080p video and even has a microphone built-in and that works too). Before I bought the webcam, I did some reading to make sure that my idea for it would bear fruit, and what I gathered was that a "universal" webcam standard had been developed and that most big manufacturers now conform to it for driverless functionality, along with Windows, MAC and Linux. My experience has been consistent with that explanation, so I am anticipating that my OUYA will be equally kind to these USB devices.

One other thought that just struck me... an NTFS file system (at one point in its development) was the only FS that supported persistent data for an Android x86 system installation. At the time, you were stuck operating as a LiveCD if you formatted ext3 or ext4. It's been a while since I fooled around with that, so I have no idea where they're at with that now, but it struck me as odd that I would have to format NTFS for a Linux-based OS installation, instead of ext(x), although I've also used Linux on NTFS partitions in other situations in the past. At any rate, I'm more surprised now when NTFS ISN'T supported than when it is. I could be completely wrong this time.

Are modules on the software side? Do you mean modules that allow the controllers to work with an emulator, or is the module for telling the ouya that multiple devices are connected to the one USB port? Thanks again

see i find this weird since i have used ntfs formatted hard drives on the 360 and they worked just fine, just plugged in and was good to go. the console did say it wasnt supported but still let me use it. so i dont really understand why it says it and they claim it is unsupported when it clearly has for me on more than one console :/

yeah its been years since i have had issues with ntfs and linux playing well, infact it seems standard to have it out of the box on most flavors. even our cable boxes support it now without a second thought
i remember the days when i need it 2 or 3 libraries in linux to be able to read ntfs, writing was a whole other issue Thank god those days are gone

Well, you're the only person I've seen saying that it works. Googling "xbox360 ntfs" will get you about fifty people saying that NTFS does not work just on the first page.

USB hardware working into OUYA

Good night. I started this post to share with you all hardware usb devices that i have tested and worked without problem into OUYA.
First, i get an usb host with 5 usb ports , because ouya just have one standard usb port,
Usb .host worked without problem, and connected to it:
Keyboard and wireless mouse: i have tried 3 different models of keyboard + mouse wireless combo and all worked very well. Instant response and now i can navigate trought ouya like in Pc hihi
Usb memory sticks: I tried 1gb capacity, and also 4,8,16 and 32gb and all worked witount problems. Take note that you first need to install any file manager to get into usb contents.
Xbox 360 wireless controller: as its seems not to pair, if you use it into any emulator you can pair and configure buttons with it
I tried to use my Logitech g930s and it actually detected it and it allowed to Moro reduce and increase the system volume. Sadly I couldn't hear anything out of them. I might try again some other time.
Glad to hear that multiple USB Devices are working with Ouya.
OP, the Xbox 360 controller is NOT Bluetooth, though the Wii/WiiU/PS3 controllers are.
Sabrent 32' active USB extender works
Logitech Trackman Wheel works
Logitech unifying receiver and MX515 couch mouse work, but is registered as controller 1 at boot. It locked up the OUYA when first tried hot plugging it in to extender. Works when installed before boot, and had been paired by PC.
Belkin 4 port USB hub works plugged in to active 32' cable with trackball and 2gb USB stick. Hot swapped after wireless mouse was unplugged from ouya. wireless Mouse works connected through hub on reconnect. Pushed it with a 32gb stick, which was not recognized. Rebooted and 32gb stick was recognized but not 2gb. Both mice worked but controller still shows up as 2 even though I turned off the mouse when booting.
So what is a good USB game controller available cheap? It is now the end of two business weeks that I requested a replacement controller and I still haven't received it

Toshiba 1tb capacity, in NTFS format and helped by an app called "Paragon NTFS&HFS+" worked witout problem, so ouya also has compatibility with high capacity ntfs formatted hard drives ))

Best USB controller hands down is the wired version of the Xbox 360 controller. In the UK its about £20. Very long cable on them with a breakpoint which is handy for kid sisters running through your room. Functions fine under android and windows, can be gotten to work on other Linux systems and Macs fine too. £20 from other brands seems to get you nothing in comparison. Also makes a good club for hitting people when they beat you although the wireless controller has more heft to it so is a bit better there
Nkte, common mistake I have seen people do. Do not buy the play and charge kit for a regular wireless controller thinking it allows you to use it via USB, it doesn't. Also the proper USB reciever for a wireless 360 controller doesn't work correctly on android systems.
Otherwise, Logitech might be your best bet but I personally swear by the wired 360 controllers. Hopefully when the one is released the 360 controllers will have a price crash, I'll probably stock up on a handful more.
I can confirm the PS3 Sixaxis Controller is working!
EDIT: Bluetooth & Wired-connection works fine.

I have a ps3 media remote but cant get the ouya to see it. Anyone else try this yet?
Update: I was able to see the remote under bluetooth devices but it asks me for a pin number. didnt see one in the manual
Does the xbox 360 wireless adapter (for PC) work for Ouya ?? I got one queued up in my Amazon cart but trying to get some feedback first. Wired 360 controller works great, acts just like an Ouya controller. Wiimote with Wiimote Controller is hit or miss on my programs. Don't have access to any PS3 controllers, but have lots of 360 controllers lying around.

Can you be more specific? So many threads are filled with poor information or redundant information. It would be great if we could all provide as much information as possible. The point of this thread is to inform others of what does and does not work so that they we don't all have to repeat the same trial and error process.

Wired 360 controller works great, acts just like an Ouya controller. Wiimote with Wiimote Controller is hit or miss on my programs. Don't have access to any PS3 controllers, but have lots of 360 controllers lying around.

Yes it does. I cannot compare with a wired one, but for me it is working. The support on the games is not 100% but I dont think that this is a a receiver fault more than a implementation thing. AFAIK there are different input management APIs on ODK. It seems that some games uses hardcoded keycodes instead of new OUYA API for controller compatibility.
For exmplae, in Stalagfligt, none PS3 nor Xbox works, Ice Rage only works with PS3 controller and SCi-Fi fighters with Xbox one.

Did you try 1234 or 0000? Those tend to be standards for pairing.

Hi guys, does anyone know if there's a way to alter the button functions of a USB mouse? I'm using a standard Dell mouse and left, right and middle click are all set to tap, it'd be nice to map right and middle click to different functions if possible, like back and menu.
Are the button functions baked in to the ROM? Or does it depend on which mouse you're using? I had a quick look for mouse button mapping apps but couldn't find anything, it was all virtual mouse apps for controlling PC etc.

[Q] OS and BT questions

Okay, the first question is aimed at Mad Catz Rich as from what I gathered he is a Mad Catz rep.
Can we expect an OS update to the MOJO? An update to at least 4.3 is important because of FSTrim which seriously affect performance in the long run.
The second question is about the bluetooth and aimed at anybody who can answer. Supposedly the MOJO supports bluetooth but I've also seen mention of a dongle. Do you actually need the dongle to use the controller or is it only for when connecting it to a PC (if it's a requirement it eats up an entire USB right?) So does bluetooth on the device work without the dongle? Can you easily connect devices such as a mouse and a keyboard?
I'm interested in the MOJO but gaming is only third on my list. I want it more as a low power (HT)PC running android so I want to know if my logitech K810 (great for only using one keyboard when switching between the phone, tablet, and PC) would work on it and an actual mouse would be nice since it might take a while to get accustomed to using the mouse mode on the C.T.R.L. (plus I saw some comment somewhere where the person was concerned with the durability of the switch as it would get constant use and a mouse would avoid the need for constant switching).
I'm not sure whether to wait or not as game compatibility is only semi important for me for me (plus I have several humble bundle android games which might avoid the need for play store compatibility). But video playback is important as is the keyboard and mouse. If those work then despite the limited game selection it might be worth it for me.
We have connected a BT keyboard and mouse with no problem to ours. Logitech keyboard, Microsoft mouse & both work well. Neither use a dongle.
I do have the controller's dongle taking up a USB port, but not sure if it actually needs it...I just sort of plugged it in because it was there and I'm a fan of sticking things into other things.

Controller has built in blue tooth. Just flip the switch the the far left(blue tooth) and hold start button for 5 seconds. Controller will light up and seek nearby Bluetooth devices and sync.

I use this mini BT kyboard/mouse:

Works fine, a bit treaky to get used to but very functional.
I haven't tried removing the BT smart dongle, I would say it does need the dongle for the controller only because of android 4.2.2 doesn't support it.
On the new egg TV vid, there's confirmation of Android 4.4 kitkat coming, so I guess that's coming, and when it does the dongle wont be needed on the mojo, as from 4.3 it does support BT smart natively.

Unfortunately, the Android OS won't be able to take advantage of this until KitKat is made more widely available. So, in the meantime, the USB dongle is included to make up for this connection. This will be similar for other Bluetooth Smart devices that don't have the OS/hardware matching up yet. The Bluetooth 4.0 built-in, however, is backwards-compatible with all Bluetooth Classic connections.
Regarding USB ports, using a USB hub should be just fine for connecting additional USB devices. Ie, wired keyboard, wired mouse, usb dongle wireless keyboard or mouse, xbox 360 controller, external hard drives, thumbdrives, etc.

Just to clarify this even further, whilst 4.3 adds Bluetooth Smart support it doesn't have support for all Bluetooth Smart profiles. 4.4 adds support for HID over GATT which is what's needed for Smart mice, keyboards and game controllers.

Gamepads have to be specifically created for iOS in order for them to work so, no dice there I'm afraid. The CTRLR will pair directly with one of the following:
Android device running 4.4 + Bluetooth 4.0 chip
Windows 8/8.1 PC with Bluetooth 4.0 chip
Macbook running Mavericks with Bluetooth 4.0 chip

My tablet is running 4.0.4 with the MC BT4 dongle over OTG and works fine.

Yep - I did say directly
With the dongle, of course, you can connect it to anything that supports a USB gamepad (and which doesn't require some other form of authentication, such as Xbox 360), which even includes a Playstation 3 (although the button assignments will be all kinds of wrong).

That would mean, I could use the controller with my LG G2 and Nexus 7 ? Both are supporting USB gamepads, keyboards and mousecontroll.
If the Mad Catz BT dongle would act like any other wireless to USB keyboard transmitter, it should work " out of the box ".

It should be - the dongle conforms completely to the HID USB standard so it doesn't do anything funky or out of the ordinary. That said, I've noticed on our Nexus 7 that sometimes you have to unplug/replug the OTG cable a couple of times to get it to recognise correctly, depending on the OTG cable that you use. You can tell if you've got a good connection because the home button LED should illuminate blue rather than flashing.
So yes, provided you've got a good OTG cable and all other things being equal it will work on any device that supports USB game controllers.
I've used this OTG cable on many different devices. It's definately full working. Before my former post, I have rechecked if my wireless keyboard with USB dongle works. Sony Sixaxis on USB are fine working. On both devices. Both devices even have enough power output to run harddrives.
The LG has JB 4.2.2 and the N7 has the actual 4.4.2 running. The controler simply can't pair.
In terminal lsusb didn't even list the dongle as recognized device.

It's clear that it's not getting initialised through that OTG but can't explain why that is happening, I'm afraid. If it's working through your M.O.J.O. then we know it's okay and we don't do anything specific at all on M.O.J.O. to support it - it really is just a USB HID compliant dongle.
Strange, if I connect the bt dongle through a passive hub, it will be recognized by my G2 and N7.
It's not a really handy solution.

I bought another OTG cable and now, the dongle is recognized to my LG G2 without the HUB.
So, you're absolutely right. The C.T.R.L.R USB-dongle should work with any device. :good:

Turn off right analog as mouse

I really like this device.. especially when combined with ps4 remote play...
I got no problem using DS4 controller wired to shield.. but it's wired...
the problem is everytime i play ps4 using shield/any other controller it turns the right analog into mouse.. so I it's really hard to press R3 button.. and hate the mouse cursor keeps moving...
Is it possible to turn off the right analog as mouse? Or any other trick so i can use my nvidia shield/360 controller to play ps4 remote play?

I have the modded remote play with the invisible touch buttons. I attach the DS4 pad to the SHIELD with an OTG adapter on the micro USB port. The pads works perfect and there are no visual cues on the screen (i.e Cursor)
The adapters are very cheap and you'll find other uses for it I am sure. Hope this helps
He's referring to the nvidia shield, which recently updated and added "right thumb stick as mouse" for non TV apps. So when you try to look around it shoes a mouse, and the thumb stick doesn't work as intended. I'm having the same issue and wondering if anyone has found a workaround or way to disable it too.

I'm not a mind reader lol This section is for the SHIELD TV which uses the Android TV OS (it's not the same as what the tablet or portable uses). Perhaps posting or looking in that section will get you guys an answer sooner...I wish you all the best with it.

Sorry I didn't see the last part that said "ie cursor" and saw the "otg adapter" and assumed you were talking about the shield portable devices. I too was referring to the Shield TV and just misrepresented it.
I used the XDA port with invisible touch buttons as well, but still get a cursor popup when trying to use the right thumbstick. If i'm not mistake, it's a feature added in the newest update to the Shield TV for non-tv apps to help navigate them better. I'm also unable to use the PS button or touchpad, but I just assumed it wasn't possible.

Well I feel like a putz. I didn't even realize there was a micro USB on the back, or that it would function differently than the USB ports. Using an OTG cable like stated above does work, and there is no mouse prompts when using the right stick! Thank you @honosuseri

Sorry for the confusion, I thought you were personally having problems with the SHIELD Portable with the built in pad. I was definitely talking about the SHIELD TV as you now know.
I have a USB HDD connected (adopted as internal storage) and had a USB receiver in the other port for a keyboard and mouse...that only left the Micro USB port available for the DS4, so I gave the OTG a go! Didn't take long to notice it worked far better than when in the standard USB 3 port. Happy to have helped
so there's no solution for this in shield android tv.. that's a pitty...
