I decided to kick off a summary topic. Right now there's been quite some (development) action regarding our beloved Motorola Milestone 2.
My goal with this thread is to summarize as much information as possible, in a clear way. Everybody is of course allowed to help make this topic as useful as possible.
Please do not use this thread for troubleshooting or discussing your problem!
For simple questions & troubleshooting we have a stickied topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057291

Using the internal memory as a virtual SDCard
flibbulator tried using a part of the internal memory as a virtual SDCard, since his real SDCard broke. He wrote a little guide and requested some help with it.
To use this mod, you need a rooted device! You can enter the commands in a Terminal Emulator or via ADB Shell. It should be noted that the Virtual SDCard can only be mounted as a folder of your real SDCard. So you do need a working SDCard to make it work.
His thread, including the guide can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948887
Note that you need Busybox installed to enable this feature.
Note that Step 5 has a small error; The correct commands to execute are:
Code:
$ su
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/data/[COLOR="DarkOrange"]sdcard[/COLOR].img bs=1024 count=[COLOR="DarkOrange"]2000000[/COLOR]
# busybox mkfs.vfat /data/[COLOR="DarkOrange"]sdcard[/COLOR].img
# mount -o loop -t vfat /data/[COLOR="DarkOrange"]sdcard[/COLOR].img /sdcard/[COLOR="DarkOrange"]storage[/COLOR]
You can substitute the orange values with your own.

Right now there are two cooked ROMs available. One is based on Froyo and one on Gingerbread. Note that the Gingerbread version might be unstable and (partially) non-functional. But please, do help the developer to make this ROM a great one!

Hey all!
As you can see in my signature, i'm a HD2 user and i'm currently porting android, it's now been 3 months since i last used winmo!!!
To cut down to the important; my brother recently bought HTC Magic!
Since i like modding a lot, and since i have felt the beauty of android 2.2 (Froyo) on my HD2, knowing that Magic is android 1.5 by default, i want to port the latest ROM/android to his cell phone!
It's a PVT32A i guess (its written on the box 288MB RAM)
Is there is any froyo ROM for magic now?!
Or eclair?!
Stock or custom?!
I prefer stock roms if possible with froyo or eclair!
If not, what is the latest/fastest/best ROM for magic right now?! Please point me to it!
In htc site i found this http://www.htc.com/europe/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=267&cat=2&dl_id=862;
did anyone tried it?! Is that android 1.5 or more?!
Please help me guys!
I know i should be reading but HD2 has got many bugs still in android to keep me completely busy in reading there besides that my brother doesn't like to read.
Thanks
Simple.... follow my guide to root and get custom recovery...(check my signature)... then apply stock magic 2.1 with sense found in development section... or the stock 2.2 without sense also found in development!
Good luck!

Excuse me mumilover but i have many concerns, if you or anyone can help me:
1-i've read that there is a "check for system update" in the settings/about phone but i don't have it!!! that is weird!!! I was thinking of updating the system first to see where that leads me!
2-in your root guide you use adb installing method; well i have never used it yet, is it that simple by only opening a command prompt in windows and writing "adb install C:\roottools\App\UniversalAndroot_1.6.1.apk" for example i can install this app if this is its location on pc?!?
Excuse my ignorance, but does this work simply by connecting the cell to the pc va usb (with debugging mode on) or it does need anything extra to make it work?!?
3-the biggest difficulty is that, by default, there are no file manager included and no market application!!!! which means one can not install any app!!! No way to download it and no way to install it if one can't access the SDcard!!!
Is that why we need adb?!?
4-How can i know my radio version and Hboot?! (in winmo it used to be displayed on booting)
5-Do you mean by "and get custom recovery" that i should do also steps 6, 7 and 8?! or only 7?! or maybe 7 and 8?! (coz 6 seems a bit freaky "Using this spl will cut your ram in half and make the 3.5mm jack useless!"... )
Thanks a lot
I can only say, that you have to read the guide 1-3 times more...
Many of your questions is answered there...
It very simple to follow, and i have written all the steps need.
Just do it and revert back if you get any problems.
Please, if you get problems, then write them in the guide thread and not here... to make things organized :0)

Hi,
I really need an Arabic support to my milestone 2 device. I've searched the net for a solution with no result, it might be due to the fact that milestone 2 hasn't been officially released in the middle east!!
I'm quite sure it's possible because milestone 1, Defy and Atrix users have had a solution for this issue, then why not me?
Please guys any help would be appreciated, I'm fed up with this!
I'm running the latest firmware 2.2.2
Thanks in advance!.

We would have all languages if we would have a Cyanogenmod ROM but we haven't at this moment. You can eventually install More Locale app from market, and add your locale. After that you will get your language in all apps that support it.

Just install the "More Locale" app from the Android Market, and add your (Arabic) locale in this app. After that all installed apps will recognize your system locale as the Arabic and automatically will be translated to this language if support it. Just try and see results.
agent008my, mkmck or anyone can help, if you could guide me through this?
I've found this generic Arabic files for android 2.2 & 2.3
but I don't know if I can apply them to milestone 2 and how? because I'm no expert in milestone 2 firmware, especially that Arabic is shown in my device but the problem is that it's not connected letters, so there is a little hope here
here is the link please check it out:

the steps to the link there is pretty straight forward. you have to make sure your phone is rooted though. to root your phone, check through the android development section of this MS2 forum and you should be able to root your phone then. read carefully, and then read again before you attempt a root. once rooted, download root explorer or something similar and you should be able to follow the steps in that blog pretty easily
edit: you should be able to search through all the extension files stated (right from checking if your ROM is deodexed to modding the system/framework extensions) in that blog after you have rooted your phone via root explorer or similar
always always perform a nandroid backup before you start rooting your phone or installing the patch. you can learn more about nandroid backups and similar android terminology and rooting through these threads:

I installed Root explorer and before rooting I've explored the Framework. I found a framework with odex extension which make it not suitable for the method the guy mentioned.
So my question here, is deodexing the rom a possible thing for a basic user (I've read it's a complicated method), or do you advice me not to do it? -to be able to apply the files-
Thanks very much!.

to be very honest with you, here is my understanding on deodexing:
Apk files have respective odexes that devs use to supposedly save space. Deodexing means you convert it back to a .dex file and put it back inside the apk. This allows you to easily replace files (not having to worry about odexes), but the main point was to deodex services.jar so that you can change all text to different colors (such as the clock color to white) and to deodex services.jar, you need to deodex everything.
to be honest i know nothing about deodexing or how difficult it is to carry out. however, i did take the liberty of searching some up for you, and there is a tutorial on this forum about deodexing. its very complete and it should be able to help you.

Scroll down to "First time flashing CM 7 to your Fascinate (or coming from another ROM)?" and follow the instructions there.
When you get to step three download the files below
ROM- Download the latest nightly here.

Kernel - Latest Glitch Kernel. I'm using the V12 Beta, Medium Voltage
Then follow the rest of the instructions.

when you have a stock kernel it deletes the cwm after reboot.
Follow steps in droidstyles instructions.
sum it up:
Download latest cm7 put it on your sd card
Odin CWM located in post for CM7, on first powerup three finger boot
delete data and cache then go advanced delete dalvik cache
then flash Zip from SD card. when that is done Boom reboot and welcome to CM7

2. Install Superuser (sometimes included in bootloader app along with BB)
3. Flash Install one of the modded or OC kernels.
Life is good.
Read the stickies, and the guides, that's why we post them there.

I have done that mod on cm7 if you read through the thread you can see my responses so I know it works on cm7 if done correctly although the guide has changed since the last time I looked at it
If you cant get it to work then take a logcat and ask the op to look at it
Also make sure you flash your mod on a fresh copy of cm7 - using things like link2sd and other mods which alter the policy may cause a bootloop - You can test this by wiping data and seeing if the phone boots then
