I read that a rooted phone would not receive the firmware update notice. I rooted my phone g-free method s-off eng boot last weekend. This morning I got the notice to update my firmware. The only thing I can do is tell it to remind me to update in one day. Is there a way to get rid of this? I am happy with my stock phone, I just need to be able to back up my game saves stored on internal memory. From what I understand, there is no way to temp or perm root if I update. And there is no final (rooted) version of this update available to flash.
I don't know about rooting the new version yet, but I know there's at least one rooted version in the development section... I'm not sure how stable it is but I think it's good. As far as game progress, I always use Mybackup Root to backup texts, call logs, bookmarks, shazam data, and general app/game data and then restore on whatever new ROM or build I switch to.

One thing I know for certain that would remove the firmware notifications is flashing a new rom. I'm not exactly sure how far you have to take the whole customization process before Tmobile stops trying to update your phone though. It's probably something in the system files that keeps searching for OTA updates or something.
Best thing I can suggest to you if you want to keep the stock rom but get rid of the firmware notifications is to find a rooted version of your current rom and flash it. There's a few of them here on XDA that are just the stock Froyo Rom with root access and some bloatware removed. If you flash one of those the updates will stop coming in and you can keep everything stock.
Only solution I can think of that doesn't involve haphazardly removing system files until you find the one that controls OTA updates lol

I have my Hero since December and I am more than happy with it.However,having used Custom ROMs on my Diamond and having seen all the amazing work that's been done with the Hero,I occasionally catch myself thinking that I am really stupid staying with the stock ROM and wanting to try something new,something "shiny".BUT!All my contacts,messages etc are in the Hero and it's my everyday phone.What's more,I don't want to void my warranty(not permanently and irreversibly that is),to put aside the fact that I already love it as it is!I just like change,like most of you here I assume.On my Diamond I must have changed more than 20 ROMs and not just one install for every ROM,but the updated versions of some etc.
I am still very skeptic on whether to root my Hero,so I want some questions answered if possible.
First off,what is Nandroid backup and what does it backup?Can I bring my phone back EXACTLY in the state it was?All stock,like nothing has happened!I don't care about losing root access on my phone,I only want to be able to undo any changes that I make.
And secondly,what chance of bricking my phone is there?I see most chefs recommending wiping.Is it something like MTTY for WinMo devices?

Nandroid only backs up certain parts of the system; as of a few months ago, they don't include user apps, but do include all system apps and system settings.
If you want to make your phone stock again, flash an HTC official RUU update. I'm talking about the .exe, not a .zip cooked by anyone here - the RUU will rewrite every part of your phone, putting it back to a 100% fresh state.
Also, the only way I can think of that you can brick a Hero easily is interrupting a radio flash.
So there's no way to somehow backup my current ROM and bring it back?
If so I guess there's no rooting etc for me until I get my next handset...
Also,some say that,once the hero is updated to 2.1 by htc there will be no rooting,flashing and so on.True or what?

Still working bang on here. Use apps2sd, do Nandroid+Ext backup and it restores everything exactly how it was.

Ok... first of all, you cannot nandroid backup before you root AFAIK, and the backup restores your phone to *exactly* the same state as it is when performing backup (including messages, phone contacts, apps, etc.). However, since you must have root to backup it will restore your phone with root, which means you will lose your warranty.
However, you can also backup most of your settings with apps on the market. You can sync contacts with google, so they will never get lost, backup apps and messages and then restore them without having to have root.
Also, in case, you want to use your warranty, you can always remove root, etc. with the stock .exe update. Then you'll have to restore apps and settings with whatever backup application you were using to backup them. So I don't think you'll have any problems with that.
And, as mentioned earlier, there is no chance for you to brick your phone by simply flashing roms. Only way is to flash wrong radio (for example CDMA radio on GSM hero) or to pull out the battery during radio flashing.
Nandroid backs up (almost) the entire state of your phone.
If you need to unroot then use an ruu (the exe) which are official HTC programs to get your entire phone back to stock.
With your warranty, it's only void if they know it's rooted, so if you use an ruu everything will be fine .
And if you don't decide to root then DO NOT flash the official update as you will (probably) not be able to root again.

One more question.If I root my phone but don't flash a custom rom,can I do a Nandroid backup for my stock rom?
I am gonna root my phone via villianrom forum instructions..noob alert..do we HAVE to add radio RUU? or we can just root the phone. And thats it?

Undereducated noob with rooted stock rom
I rooted my Incredible using Unrevoked so I could use free wifi tether and kept the stock rom. Unfortunately, because I am a noob and didn't know the ramifications or have all the info I needed (it's hard to filter and process all the info from searching the subject on Google), I deleted a couple of apks (before finding info saying to move them) in my attempt to eliminate some bloatware. I got nervous about it and stopped before deleting much, but don't remember which apks I did delete (I did a manual update at 4am while very tired). Now Verizon has pushed the Nov OTA to my phone and I have been pushing "Install Later" since. Think I still have s-off.
Can I allow the phone to do the update? I really don't care about retaining root or not, and can uninstall the wifi tether, superuser, etc, do the update and wait for Unrevoked to catch up so I can reroot (if necessary?) and reinstall wifi tether later. I have also seen that the RUU is out there, but as I understand, it wipes the phone and I'd really like to avoid that. I have seen the instructions posted earlier in the thread about "Installing OTA to rooted Android" but am lost when reading them. Plus the instructions and info I gathered when researching rooting my phone are being held hostage by my Chrome bookmarks (had to quit using Chrome, but that's another story).

Once again, if you are rooted, it doesnt matter how, you CANNOT accept ota update.
If you deleted something you shouldnt have, then restore the backup to that, or do a factory reset and re-root.
Ok i just figures since it was TEMProot that it didn't matter. Tnx for the reply, tried the factory default option (no luck), is there any place where I can get the Stock firmware to re-flash the phone?
Or would anyone in here recommend another rom ? Tons of custom roms, as I can tell.

Got the same problem -- some time ago I removed some "useless" apps from my /system/app folder, and when 1.72 update was released I wasn't able to install it in any way (I was trying to follow this guide). I restored the missing apps, and then everything went fine using the guide mentioned above!

Sorry but that ain't correct... You *can* update your phone if you're rooted, the main problem is that root will be gone after update. The best solution is to *always* reject OTA updates provided by HTC and wait until devs here have found a safe way to update your device without losing root privileges.

I have already made a backup for that reason and would I be able to restore it or I will have to start all over again?

You won't even get a notification for an OTA if you're on any other ROM besides the stock Verizon one. Don't worry about it
You can block future ota if u want. Using root explorer go to /system/etc/security and change otacert.zip to otacert.zip.bak

WELL, some ROMs will still get OTA updates, but not notifications about it. Also your on XDA, youll get the OTA from here before its even out.

I have a rooted DINC with the stock ROM. I rooted prior to Verizon pushing out the latest OTA update, which I believe just included a bunch of bloatware. I'd like to go ahead and receive that update anyway so I can have the latest stock ROM and to stop those pesky update messages from popping up. Currently, I guess since my phone is rooted, I cannot update. So here are the options I can think of:
1. Unroot, receive update, reroot (not my favorite option, would like to avoid!)
2. Get the latest stock ROM with update mentioned and flash my phone via ROM manager with that ROM (where can I get this ROM?)
3. Go ahead and try turning off the updates as mentioned in this thread to atleast get rid of the pesky update messages constantly popping up on my phone.
Any ideas?

My suggestion? Since you're comfortable flashing a ROM, just flash Virtuous 3.2 and be done with it. It's the stock ROM + everything good about being able to root, in one complete package. Flash a nice kernel (ziggy, lou, incredikernel) while you're at it and enjoy some comparatively awesome battery life!

Hey, just bought my Atrix about 2 weeks ago. My first ever smartphone, and i just rooted using the gingerbreak app (lost all my photos) and got the phone setup to install non market apps.
Also, just did the mod to allow the webtop app to work on any hdmi device, thats awesome!!!
I do have a few questions.
Is there a way to get the phone back to stock, or a reason why i would need too?? I noticed that doing a hard reset still leaves the phone rooted.
Can the phone still get updates while rooted?
I just wanted to know incase i had to send it back for any reason.

Don't worry too much. Stick around and when there are updates we'll find out what happens. Usually root access is removed but we always find a way to get it back.
As long as you do not remove or freeze any Moto apps you can still update. If you happen to freeze them, you can just thaw before updates. If you remove them, you will most likely have to flash to stock with either 4.1.26 or 4.1.57 sbf. Also I believe the webtop hack may stop updates.

If you had to return your phone, flashing back to 4.1.26 or 4.1.57 should suffice. It's very easy if you follow the instructions. I usually flash back to 4.1.26 when a new update comes out, then use over the air (OTA) updates to get my phone current anyway just to "clean the pipes" so to speak.
You will pretty much always lose root with an update, but as was said, our wonderful devs will get it back quickly.
I dont plan on removing any moto apps. The webtop hack, all i did was remove 3 files, and replace with the 3 new apk's. Before installing the OTA update, could i just add the 3 stock apks i removed and remove the hack apks?
It's possible it may work.
Also if you flash for example GingerBlur, etc., they will remove Moto apps (bloatware).
With the right apps backup is a snap so its nobig deal to flash a stock sbf for updating purposes.
