Deodexed allows you to theme and work a bit easier. Odex loads faster. If you are newer to the game, or don't really plan on doing any customizing or theming, go with Odexed. Most ROMs you'll see 'round these parts are deodexed, though, allowing you complete control... and realistically, it's only (supposed to be) the first boot that's slower anyway.

Rooted, sdcard mounting fixed, modified recovery and halfway through deodexing - will get it posted as a clockwork flash-able as soon as it is ready.
And for those who know me, this will be the new base for my roms - as soon as haptic is fixed.

welcome back from the brick!
So after seeing many things that is said with the DX I thought I should write a post like this. This is just to clear up confusion so users can have the knowledge to use in the future.
Every ROM for the DX is AOSP
I have seen this said many times and it bugs me that people think that all ROMs are AOSP. As of now, there are actually only a few AOSP ROMs for the DX, cvpcs' Tanzanite/Obsidian, Cobalt, and blackdroid's Ultimate Droid. Other ROMs like rubiX, Liberty, ApeX, and Fission are basically Motorola ROMs with the blur applications replaced with AOSP applications. Now this does not actually make it AOSP. It has features from AOSP, but there is much more to it than the applications. These blur-based ROMs actually have other AOSP-like features, such as lock screen music controls and a few others. Now that also doesn't make it AOSP, those are just a few features that were originally modifications to AOSP to add more functionality to a ROM. That doesn't mean these ROMs are bad in any way. They are actually very good. The only downfall of them is the fact that they are limited to what can be done.
There can't be AOSP ROMs without a custom kernel.
Another statement I have been told or have seen several times. It is considered AOSP if it comes from Google's source. A kernel won't affect the fact that it was built from source. Although it would be ideal for a custom kernel with AOSP, it isn't needed.
A custom kernel is needed.
This is another incorrect statement. It would be nice to replace the kernel, but it isn't needed. The kernel that is provided to us from Motorola includes basically everything the end user would need. Also there is overclocking(although it isn't the easiest implementation) by adding a temporary module to the kernel that is erased after the phone is powered off.
Gingerbread won't come to the DX until Motorola releases a new kernel with their Gingerbread update.
Incorrect. What the original concern was that Gingerbread would not boot with a .32 kernel(the kernel the DX has.) and that it needs a .35 kernel. This was later proven wrong with D1. The D1 has been running Gingerbread for a bit now with a .32 kernel. Now I know people will say it is is a different kernel or something along those lines, but that doesn't matter. Gingerbread will boot on it without needing to replace the current kernel.
this is something that should be posted on every forum about the DX. Great info
Would getting building GB on the DX give us the new garbage collector too? I'm so tired of waiting for memory to clear after PewPew (makes a TON of objects).

Don't think GB would do anything different with it.
Moved and stuck. Thanks Matt! Please add info as it strikes you, this could be really helpful to the newer folks.
I feel like this info is either wrong or irrelevent.
I'm leaning towards irrelevent. Why don't we have Gingerbread yet if it's possible? I feel like you are saying technically we can have 2.3 w/ the X's current kernel, but it looks like realistically we will never see 2.3 until Moto steps up.
edit: I was mainly referring to your last point

First off, please don't bash on the devs that work so hard to give us new material for a phone that everyone expected to be impossible to do anything on...
2nd, gingerbread is possible, but you can't just take a release (even when possible) and dump it on a phone. It needs to be recompiled with the appropriate modifications to allow it to work on the X's hardware. Droid2169 is currently working on this, and has made some progress, he is working out usb drivers/connectivity I believe.
I understand waiting can be frustrating, but please don't bash on the devs who help us out.
thanks for the info
misconceptions
misconception?---do i really need to "deodex" my droid x before flashing a custom rom? i was under the impression that installing a custom rom would deodex the phone, and deodexing only has to be done manually before theming.

Odexing is a process that optimizes the java code. most carrier roms are odexed. It is possible to de-odex a rom. also, if you build an aosp rom, it is not odexed, but can be if you wish.
you cannot apply a theme to an odexed rom.
Definitely something that applies to the rom, not the phone.

Your kernel statement seems wrong. If the current Moto ROM has kernel # 1.2, but the newest version of Google's AOSP rom is kernel #1.4, there is no way for us to update to the newest AOSP kernel. Sure we can update the apps and whatnot from the newest version, but strictly speaking without the same kernel it is not AOSP.
Also I dunno where you get the idea that everyone think all DX roms are AOSP. If it has any sort of blur, it's not and many roms do.

The best example of this is probably coming up soon. If Netflix's app require's DRM api calls that are only supported in the 2.3+ kernels then you are SOL if you can't mess with your kernel. You lose features and any kernel fixes/optimizations.
I can use SRS!
not use any other app!
thank you revolution!
Yes !
Nothing to say about this rom !
Just great great work !!!
This ROM is truly amazing. I've tested alot of ROMS now but I always had to install ARHD after every single ROM.
hi the roms is very good
iam having some trouble withe the remove script
Agreed really good, trying RCmix VoidU at the moment too, very similar but getting fc with Acrobat Reader and can't uninstall!
Will probably go back to ARHD

sorry boys but has any of you tried CM7 or H2O?? ARHD is nice for someone who likes Sense UI but if you don't like it or don't mind it than any non-sense rom is a lot better. I tried many ROMS and none of the sense roms are even half as fast as CM7
yeah this rom really rocks ;D

Yeah, H2O is really fast hehe.

Would have to agree. ARHD 6.1.0 is definitely awesome. XD
To me it seems much smoother and much more responsive than 5.2.6. However I'm not really liking some aspects of the UI like the new weather widget and lock screen. :\
The new ROM is absolutely great! In fact this is my first CustomROM, just rooted the Phone 3 days ago..., but it's much faster and more energy efficient than the original stockROM is. Love it!
6.1.0 is great, fast, stable and battery life is great, tried a few other ROMs including CM7 but keep coming back to ARHD.
ARHD is a rom for absolute beginners on the custom rom world.
There are lots of different roms with much more possibillities.
for example...
- MIUI
- CyanogenMod
Try more often a different rom and discover the fun of flashing.
I really love revolition rom. today i spent all day with flashing this rom. But I've severeal problems with it.
When I try to install modifications (Like Advanced CPM, Custom Quick Menu, lower auto brightnes), It's stucks at Boot Screen... I couldn't understand why doing this but i think this addons only compatible with revolition 5.x.
Am i right ?

yes, you need to wait for the 6.1.0 mods. The 5.x mods will not work with 6.1.0. updated mods are scattered among the thread but you will need to look for them. The updated mods will be added to first page soon I'm sure.
Not sure if its just me. But I am unable to calibrate the g sensor, it just says it fails
Actually the message is calibration aborted...
Yea i like the rom too it works amazing

Or... it's also a ROM for people who like Sense, and possibly even bought an HTC phone because of Sense, at least partly.
Some of us like AOSP or MIUI ROMs, some of us like Sense ROMs. Let's not get into putting down various ROMs or people who use them, please. These things are subjective and are opinions not facts.
However I completely agree that it's fun to flash different ROMs and try them out - no argument there!
This ROM seems really good.
Do NOT flash your hero phone with 3rd party ROMs unless necessary. I have played with many kinds of ROMs for 1 year. Most of them are downright laggy, unstable, or battery-draining although you could have some new features. These Roms are not fully tested. Some of them even contain spyware... You normally need to wipe your phone for most 3rd party ROM updates and that means you need to re-configure your phone again and again.. Now, I got my stock ROM back after making a Gold-card and I'm very satisfied with my HTC stock ROM. This is a fast, stable, power-saving and fully-tested ROM. Upgrade is very smooth and not painful.
I would suggest you to flash your phone by RUU and then root it by some tools, e.g. http://www.unlockroot.com/. But, please keep an eye on the install procedure. Do not install unnecessary apps unless you want.
The above is only my personal experience. Hope it helps.

My used ROMs include Crons, CM, Villian and some others that I can't remember. At present, I don't think there is any spyware in Crons, CM, Villian. Crons, CM, Villian are generally recognised as good 3rd pary ROMs. However, I don't think any of them is more stable or faster than stock ROMs.
I found some spywares installed as system apps in some Chinese ROMs disributed from hiapk.com and bbs.anzhi.com.. These are individual-maintained ROMs.
To my understanding, if an app requires extra permissions than what it actually needs, then that could be a spyware.
I'm not a professional mobile device developer. What I need is a rooted ROM that is bugless, does it job well and therefore suitable for everyday use.

Well, New features are very likely to require more computational resource. If you had a machine for win98, and you wanted to try Win7 with that, then I would suggest you not to do it.. HTC Hero is extacly that win98 Machine.

@gnubot, which stock ROM did u flashed?
Now I use a repack of the oficial OTA 2.1-update1,flashed it and i get some Force Close errors(like com.htc.bgp etc).
I tried VillainROM v12 and v13 and i was stuck on the load-screen (i think it is the Sense app that is stuck on).
I saw that @dastin1015 uploaded his Zero Hero Sense 3.5 ROM, looks nice and I would like to try it, but I have some doubts about some bugs. Also, i searched the forum, and couldn't find any info on how to downgrade to 2.1 (if something goes wrong). I can't post a question under the Developer forum (as a new forum user).
Any instructions or help for me(a new android user).
Thanks,

I'm a custom rom addict, rarely do I have a rom for more than 2 months before looking for something which more/better features. Sure there's some laggy roms out there, most of which are still in beta so you can't expect them to be "perfect" Roms. That said, there's plenty of excellent roms being worked on by some very clever and creative people, that go above and beyond the features stock roms offer. Get them from trusted sites/developers and you'll enjoy the experience

The fact is that some Sense lovers are tired of laggy new sense ports I guess
Therefore, a stock android ROM is not a choice.
So, in a way, I must admit that gnubot is right.
But we can't deny that the work that JieeHD, dastin1015, elelinux and other devs did is pretty awesome!
And to finish, I don't really remember how many months HTC devs took to make a correct release of the new Sense...

That is SO correct!!
I've tried non-Sense roms, they're great and fast and stable and good-looking, but not for me... i don't feel comfortable with them.
I even have got back to generic 1.5. So getting back to stock is not a solution.
At this moment, i have Wildheroc RoseV5, it's sense and it's GB.
I'm waiting for the Zero Hero Sense 3.5 to be "stable" and i'll flash it
I just had to post in this thread because of the title. It's pretty ridiculous that you'd create a topic on this site as bline007 said and not somewhere else. Especially using that topic title? You didn't really expect that anyone would agree with you I hope. For your sake I can only assume you meant to say "Be careful I've found some 3rd party roms with spyware" or the like.
P.S. I apologize for the flameish response but I feel a lot of patronage for this site and it's members because of the work massive amount of work and personal time they have spent to make my 'legacy' phone go out of it's comfort zone just to bring us features, options and a longevity we never expected from this phone. So please don't taint the hard work of the developers by making posts with titles as such.
hey guys, and sorry for a question i know must have been asked before, but i am unable to find.
What roms are the best and most up to date as of now?
i was going to go with cm7 but saw we had cm9 and a few others out there, my real question is, anything better then cm7 out there?
this will be used for my wife, who just wants it to work, as little freezes and hang ups as possible, feature set means nothing next to speed and reliability.
this is my last attempt to make this phone usable for her before i take my 12 gauge to it. please please help! i have to her hear whine everyday with the 2.6.1(think that's it) kernel on there (hasn't been updated in over a year, so anything should be an improvement, it's just hard to get the phone off her long enough to toy with it)
In that case I would use either Superclean 3 or Geewiz
Both are stock EH03 based Touchwiz ROMS. Neither has bleeding edge features but they both just work and are the most up to date ROMs that come from the Samsung/Verizon base. Personally, I have found these ROMS to be the best on battery longevity.

I would also recomend giving Team Hacksung ICS build 6.5 w/ Icy Glitch v14 b4 kernel a try! No doubt superclean and geewiz are great roms, but I think you will like ICS 4.0.3 the best...just sayin.

gotta bail from work will be back on with the tablet in about an hour.
ICS still has some issues and while it's good enough for 99% of people if this is for pure stability for a nontechnical user I'd say to go for the ROMs I mentioned earlier. Some issues on ICS are MMS doesn't work with wifi on, the datadata issue, the ui is a bit different from Touchwiz ROMs, phantom ring still occurs, CWM and nandroids still have some issues, and it's on a pretty rapid release cycle which would mean that you would need to update her phone fairly often.
ICS is great and it's what I'm running but I think the more mature EH03 ROMS are appropriate in this case.
EDIT:
The link you have goes to Glitch which is a kernel. That is part of the operating system but isn't the entire ICS OS. ICS ROM development is centered over at the rootzwiki developer forum. AOKP, Gummy, and teamhacksung's build are the premier builds.

Yeah, i figured if the kernel was in beta the rom would be as well, got her on super clean and she likes it , still can't tell the difference between that and a 2.6.1 build that was beta around a year ago, lol, thanks for the help and ics is sick , but bob nailed it in regards to my intentions.
That said , thanks to the both of you for bothering with this b.s. question in the first place , i was at work trying to sort her phone out , she needs her phone , life is chaos and time is short, thanks for making it all a little more easy. Also great to see such great support still going on for this, envious with my charge in regards to roms.
Hope i don't need to post here again for a while if you get what I'm saying, haha !! Thanks a ton !
