Thinking about flashing a custom rom on my epic and was curious if the speed of custom roms are that much faster than stock. I'm not having any issues running stock outside of the known issues (checkerboarding browser, etc) nothing show stopping.
What is faster when running a custom rom? Apps loading? Bootup? Web browsing?
Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

I'm on ACS Frozen now and its fast as hell. I was on viper and find the themes to be a bit childish for me. ACS is a clean and fast!!
Really? Please tell me you and your friends don't sit around and compare benchmarks?

I'm not sure about benchmarks but there at least SEEMS to be a little more snappiness in ACS vs stock, even after removing bloat from the latter and re-enabling journals on the former. I'm not sure what it is that really makes the difference but ACS has Carrier IQ removed, which isn't just a simple app. You apparently have to dig deep into the source code to extract it line by line.
honestly I can't tell the difference unless i'm running a benchmark.
I am using midNIGHT 5.2 BYOR. I like this ROM because I don't want a lot of bloat and it is highly customizable. I know what I need on my phone to do what I want and I don't need all the bloat. This ROM, like other ones, have Carrier IQ removed. (This well written post by k0nane explains why you don't want Carrier IQ on your phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11763089 ). I have used Frozen ROM from ACS and it is a good one too, I just like the simplicity and customization of midNIGHT.
Here is a list of what I like over the stock ROM:
1. Overclocked Kernal. I run at 1.2ghz and it is much faster. I don't put much stock into benchmarks, but you can tell it is faster when you navigate through it and open apps
2. Voodoo sound. It makes a drastic improvement in the sound quality when listening to music, especially in streaming audio with a lower bit rate, it sounds less "tinny".
3. Battery life. I use setcpu, and my phone scales the processor well. I can go all day on my stock battery, and I use my phone quite a bit (Angry Birds, Streaming Radio, MP3 Player, GPS, texting, calls, Gmail, internet, Words with Friends, Need for Speed, Soundhound, XDA, Gasbuddy, Twitter and Market. All of those are used in a typical day, plus a few random ones)
Since midNIGHT 5.0 a month or so ago, I have not had one "Force Close" or random reboot. It is great. It is like I have a different phone. I suggest you try a ROM or 2 out, you can always flash back to stock. Good luck!
Any rom with EXT4 support will be exactly what you're looking for. (midNIGHT rom, ACS Syndicate, UrbanLegend, or Bonsai).

All the things you listed in your 3 reasons has nothing to with the rom. Your talking about a custom kernel not a rom. Custom roms just have a lot of the bloatware gone.

To say that everything that I had listed has nothing to do with the ROM is not correct. Battery life has to do with the ROM, amongst other things. Also, the other kernel dependant enhancements are part of the whole "package" that is the ROM. You're only looking at what I wrote and trying to split hairs for an unknown purpose, because it doesn't appear you are trying to be helpful. The OP wanted to know if a custom ROM was worth it, I gave him my opinion of the ROM I use so the OP could make up their own mind. If you were wanting to be helpful you could have maybe suggested to the OP to try a different kernel instead of a whole ROM instead and explain why or why not. Have a great day!

Great information, I too enjoy Midnight Rom a little better than the rest out right now. Don't get me wrong, ACS, Bonsai are both great roms. I installed the Standard clean version and it sold me. Was awesome having the ability to download the additions zip also and customize very easily only the programs I need and wanted in a very simple step. To the OP, I would give it a shot if I were you.
Budderocks - just ignore the people that have nothing better to do than make up things to flame about. Never argue with an idiot, they only bring bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Having played the multiple rom games I'll say that I'm a bit tired really. As for bloatware, sdx app remover works for me in that area. I don't need to over clock, phone runs just snappy at default 1ghz. Also I'm not one of those e-penis quadrant score folks, don't care for useless benchmarks that translate nothing to me in everyday use of the phone.
Just my opinion, and the way my Epic works fine for me. Stock EC05, rooted.
Actually I was letting the op know that what you wrote was about a kernel not a rom so at least he knew the differences. I didn't think I was being mean but u guess its how you took it. I do apologize. I don't apprecirbeing called an idiot though

I personally have used 3 Custom ROMS. Truly Epic, Ace ROM, and now I'm on Syndicate.
All of them do show some improvements in everything from general snappiness to having better battery.
Speaking just about Syndicate, it has absolutely no checkerboarding in the browser. It also removes Carrier IQ which if you read the thread for the ROM is a pretty big deal in terms of privacy, performance, and battery life: As mentioned above.
I could never get 8 hours of battery life out of my phone now I'm consistently getting a day of life with 3 hours of screen on time. It's pretty sweet in all honesty.
And if you care about benchmarks, the scores to increase by a pretty decent margin! =D
I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to a stock ROM in all honesty.
I don't know if I am the only one with this problem.
The ROM flies, but the settings menu, messaging, and phonebook scrolling is all reallllly laggy, as is the window animations and transitions.
I understand GB has a 30FPS limit, but this is different, this goes at 5FPS.
That said, apps load fast and the launcher is extremely speedy, but the scrolling in the settings menu and the animations are really laggy.
I let the phone settle for 2 days and it's still the same. I don't know if this is only me but is there any fix to this?
I've reflashed this a few times, done clean installs from SEUS, same problem. Thanks!
Same problem here. Haven't been able to fix it so can't offer you any advice.
Known bug experienced by a few... wait for a major update from trip, he usually keeps them fast.

same here......on version 0.5 i went to kernel10....best experience ever! if you look up lukesjeans on youtube you can see my videos i made of it on K10. Once i went to 0.9 it was slow again. It will be fixed. Trips ROMS are always fast in my opinion.
Yeah 0.9 is slow .. Especially Scrolling in Facebook or XDA .. Top down scrolling is slow
But the TimeScape widget scrolling is smooth though but still not perfect ..
Gonna Try K010 now ..

Yeah i did a clean flash.
The first time i flashed, it ran fine then after 2mins it had a Wlod and went into a boot loop.
From there on it would not work again.
:for some reason only BB54 & 58 works properly on my phone.
Surprisingly all roms from TripNRaVeR are laggy on my Device (Miui, Arc). Other users had a much better experience.
Maybe it is device related, but it dont know.

Yeah same...I just tried J'S 2.3.3 ROM with K010 installed and it's amazing! Extremely smooth!
Can't say the same about Trip's though...I really want a fix because tbh I like trip's ROMS better but its just too laggy for me
Don't forget to consider these:
-The rom needs to settle down
-Its still in beta stage
-It still has many se crap apps
-As Trip said its not fully optimized for now
-Maybe u aren't using a costume karnel which makes the Rom so smooth
-Trust devs

Also i removed all junk apps like ts and stuff

Sometimes it's not the rom but the baseband that makes it laggy.
On WB3.16 BB54,49 or 52 everything works but i have these mini lags.
But using BB58 it all becomes smooth and fast.
Sometimes the rom is just crap.
I just wan't that bravia engine running on the hardware with WB's rom.
Hmmmmm... that would be epic.

Hey guys I have been trying to work with the 3.0 Sense roms to find the best one for me, my big issue is speed, man they really lag on my phone. Is there anything that I can do to boost speed, wish I could just have a few of the 3.0 things and keep the old stuff for reliability and speed. Any help would be cool including what rom to run and how to make it fast!
what things are you wanting to keep from the 3.0?
Have you tried Synergy? 2.1 with some 3.0 elements and I didn't have any of said issues. Was as close to the 'next step' without any deal breaking issues. You could also run the field of the 'newer' Sense ROMs until you settle, as some might not play nicely.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
What kind of slowness/lag are you experiencing? If it's mostly when switching from one task to another, you may be limited by memory. For example, if you find the launcher is slow to come back up, it may be getting killed while you run something else.
I just finished a few days each on MikG and Synergy. That was after a long time on CM7 and then various FroYo Sense ROMs before that. My experience on MikG/Synergy was that it generally did things well when they were in the foreground. But I couldn't multitask at all. If I was listening to music and I opened up Gmail, for example, the music app would almost always get killed. Or coming back to a browser window would be slow, because it had to reload the page instead of still having it in memory. And that's on a Hybrid 2.1/3.0 ROM. I actually do like a lot of the Sense parts, but I just couldn't live with that.
I tried some of the RAM optimization scripts, and they didn't help for my usage patterns. Basically I think we're approaching the limit of what can be done with 512MB of RAM.
They pretty much all lagged for me as well but not this one..i REALLy love it.
http://supersonichtcevo.blogspot.com/2011/06/sense-30-with-gingerbread-viruss-b14.html
Thanks guys I think your right I think we are close to the best the phone can do and that is that, I did find one from a guy saying its the best rom out, seems really fast but has some bugs, I may hang in there with him and see if he can get them ironed out.
I say try synergy. I use it and I experience very little lag with it.
Yeah, I have tried most of all of them too. I found a little lag in most of them except for Synergy RC2. It has been completely awesome. Battery life is amazing and even after I filled my homescreens full of widgets and icons its still smooth as butter. I never get any lag anymore. Its worth a try and it has so many customizations you can add to it unlike any other rom. Try Synergy RC2. You can't go wrong.

Hi guys,
Since Sony Ericsson released Android 2.3.3 upgrade for Xperia X10, I've heard so much opinion from other users, good, bad. In my opinion, the Stock Android 2.3.3 upgrade is good. Why don't I say very? No, I don't cause there are some things need to be fix.
However, what I gonna do here is trying to make the Stock Android 2.3.3 becomes good, just like custom ROM from Wolfbreak, Z or other devs or at least, better than it used to.
So, firstly, thanks to Z for FPS Uncap, Bravia Engine, Audio lags fix, Wolfbreak for build.prop tweaks ( I use build.prop from his ROM), Juwe11 for RAM optimization script, 28spawn for xLoud and CAYCE_VII for new Timescape widget.
Here is my video. Sorry for bad quality but my CAMERA battery is low so, it's
quick recording.
If you like this work and want your Stock Android 2.3.3 becomes like that. You will need these file http://www.mediafire.com/?7myi3gn6bgn7t
All of these processes require ROOTED and xRecovery installed on your phone.
Install Titanium backup to remove unneed system apps. You can find that thread on General discussion box.
Install SetCPU and set it for high battery performance:
Main: +Max 998 MHz +Min 245 MHz +On demand +Set on boot
Profile: Screen off: +Max 384MHz +Min 245MHz + On demand
PLEASE CHECK THE ENABLE BOX. Reboot phone.
Notice that the xLoud plugin will cause the Clock app force close. But it's very good but I repaired my phone and cause I don't need so I don't install it again. Install all plugins through xRecovery FIRST and then the .so and .prop files
And the next thing I wanna show you, I don't know why but on my phone, it will lag when the wifi or 3G connection disabled for long time. It may be caused by Timescape widget and Media Discovery. So if you see the phone lag, try it. Maybe it can help.
And don't worry about free RAM. Although it's low, like my phone, but you see that, no laggy.
Just so you know, Z didn't give us xLoud, it was someone else.
EDIT: I just checked, 28spawn gave us xLoud.

Umm, just splitting hairs, but stock 2.3.3 is obviously rubbish if you feel the need to change it that much. With all the mods, you might aswell just use wolfs Rom lol. After running his custom 2.2 with goro mod kernel, stock 2.3.3 was a big bag of poo in my opinion, so glad we've got xda to save us.

I used custom ROM from Wolfbreak and other devs, it's extremly good. But about the stability, stock is best. This thread is for user who are using stock ROM about how to make it better cause not everyone want to use custom ROM dude.
And I wanna say that you guys don't desparage SE too much. You must know that, without SE devs you will not have anything to complain here, just use a phone with symbian os. Or can you make an OS for yourself? I'm not working for SE or something else but these words are all true

lol "custom rom" is just slightly modified stock rom....
that's the funny/stupid part of this whole thing.
Basically what you are doing by changing everything is making it a "custom" rom all over again.
Stock rom, which theoretically in this circumstance, would mean the rom completely untouched. I couldn't imagine using it without tweaks, fps uncap, etc...
You asked how we 'feel' about stock 2.3.3 and I answered. I used it for a few hours, it was slow and a bit dissapointing after the excitement building up to it. Now am using wolfs because it 'feels' better to me. All my own opinion, sorry for rubbing you up the wrong way with previous post

I think they didn't include these features because they want us to buy a new Sony phone lol.
On a serious note, just by rooting and deleting a lot of the bloatware you can almost double your battery, or at least that's how it was with 2.1 stock. Giving you spare battery for tweaks if you want them.
But hey, everyone should do what they prefer, afterall, its a pretty good phone

Do you know that fps is powered by our GPU? Higher frame rate needs more power on gpu, so more graphic processing, use more battery.
When you play games on our device didnt you notice battery gets low fast? Thats Because of gpu. Get my point?

I first had stock GB and it was alright, nothing special....then I flashed WB Xperia TW GB v3 and was blown away, so fast, so smooth, so stable....I'm now on v3.9 and it has gotten better and better with each release (except v3.8). I am amazed at how responsive my phone is and how fast and lag free too, simply amazing. Yes, it doesn't blow me away with its battery life but then again, it never has. I'm kind of getting sluggish performance on mine, but only after installing certain applications--even though, I didn't install that many...
Has anyone gotten slow performance on theirs? If so, what was the culprit?
I've never had sluggish performance on this phone :\
I hear of small handfuls of people who do, and don't know what to tell them.
The slowness is caused by bloatware mostly, in my opinion. Rooting is a must for me, never been happier with any phone until I've rooted and removed excess pre-installed apps. Background services of any kind will also bog your phone down. Once my PLAY was optimized, it got WAY faster
Fast at 1GHz. Faster at 1.6. Could be a bit faster sure, but its fine as it is
Slow.
I deleted all the bloatware. Have Ram Manager installed and still slow. I don't know what's wrong.

Yep, All Animations.
I really wish I knew what to tell people too. I do have it upgraded to 2.3.4, rooted, ADB setInstallLocation optimized and de-bloated, but aside from that I haven't even gone as far as to continue my tradition of slamming Chainfire 3D on everything. And it was smooth even back on 2.3.3 when I was up to my knees in bloatware.
SD card class maybe?? I've heard stories that, while higher class cards are usually good, they result in sluggish performance on smartphones.
Mine is pretty fast as it stands.
I have a task killer app and just installed 2.3.4 on my R800at.
I get a freeze up every now and then but usually only when I forget to kill some apps before loading something. But the homescreen is usually always fast, even when I only have 44mb of ram left.
Task killing+removing bloatware is a definite way to increase performance. Im not overclocked at all and dont have any problems.

You guys should try out cola6 rom
its the fastest thing since sliced bologna
Mines always been fast (till i broke the screen)
the other one im now using seems to be quite laggy when playing GTA 3
though the broken one never lagged once while playing it.
Mines pretty standard, not very slow but maybe some lag here and there. is bloatware the apps that come pre installed?

Here.
My Play is overclocked to 1.6ghz and I use V6 Supercharger. The only time I get any lag/slow down is for about 15 seconds after booting. Otherwise it's incredibly fast and responsive
Mine is speedy, rooted locked booterload 2.3.4

Flashtool and the generic 2.3.4 firmware. Theres a thread for it in the development forum but it's pretty buried. I feel like a lot of folks miss it because of that. It's pretty easy. No unlocked bootloader needed.
And it definitely speeds up the device. For sure.

Task killing is in the long run slowing you down and the worst thing you can do. Let Android handle it, give it a week to learn the programs and your patterns and I guarantee it will be better than when you do it. There have been many articles on this.

This makes no sense whatsoever. But from you I'm not surprised.
As for the OP, I would call it medium. It can be fast when running certain games and programs. It can be slow other times, like when your Message box has a lot of messages, or you're playing a poorly coded game like NOVA 2 which has all sorts of slowdowns. Mine is bone stock with a Class 4 Sandisk card.
Use Task Killer wisely.
My xperia Play(default everything) is only slow when i have Emulators or Youtube in the backround.
When you are Using task Killer DO NOT Kill Apps that you use alot or Apps That you will be using a little while later.
As this will only take more battery as the apps have to boot up again
instead of having it in the back round.
I bought the play thinking it would be better than my last phone ( htc desire ). I thought sense was bloaty but have to say the play has been disappointing. It handles apps and games as well if not slightly better but its the home screen and widgets that seem to lag. I rooted and tried different launchers and have found go launcher best at giving the most features and widgets without lag.
