Custom roms that much faster than stock? - Epic 4G General

Thinking about flashing a custom rom on my epic and was curious if the speed of custom roms are that much faster than stock. I'm not having any issues running stock outside of the known issues (checkerboarding browser, etc) nothing show stopping.
What is faster when running a custom rom? Apps loading? Bootup? Web browsing?
Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

I'm on ACS Frozen now and its fast as hell. I was on viper and find the themes to be a bit childish for me. ACS is a clean and fast!!

Really? Please tell me you and your friends don't sit around and compare benchmarks?

I'm not sure about benchmarks but there at least SEEMS to be a little more snappiness in ACS vs stock, even after removing bloat from the latter and re-enabling journals on the former. I'm not sure what it is that really makes the difference but ACS has Carrier IQ removed, which isn't just a simple app. You apparently have to dig deep into the source code to extract it line by line.

honestly I can't tell the difference unless i'm running a benchmark.

I am using midNIGHT 5.2 BYOR. I like this ROM because I don't want a lot of bloat and it is highly customizable. I know what I need on my phone to do what I want and I don't need all the bloat. This ROM, like other ones, have Carrier IQ removed. (This well written post by k0nane explains why you don't want Carrier IQ on your phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11763089 ). I have used Frozen ROM from ACS and it is a good one too, I just like the simplicity and customization of midNIGHT.
Here is a list of what I like over the stock ROM:
1. Overclocked Kernal. I run at 1.2ghz and it is much faster. I don't put much stock into benchmarks, but you can tell it is faster when you navigate through it and open apps
2. Voodoo sound. It makes a drastic improvement in the sound quality when listening to music, especially in streaming audio with a lower bit rate, it sounds less "tinny".
3. Battery life. I use setcpu, and my phone scales the processor well. I can go all day on my stock battery, and I use my phone quite a bit (Angry Birds, Streaming Radio, MP3 Player, GPS, texting, calls, Gmail, internet, Words with Friends, Need for Speed, Soundhound, XDA, Gasbuddy, Twitter and Market. All of those are used in a typical day, plus a few random ones)
Since midNIGHT 5.0 a month or so ago, I have not had one "Force Close" or random reboot. It is great. It is like I have a different phone. I suggest you try a ROM or 2 out, you can always flash back to stock. Good luck!

Any rom with EXT4 support will be exactly what you're looking for. (midNIGHT rom, ACS Syndicate, UrbanLegend, or Bonsai).

All the things you listed in your 3 reasons has nothing to with the rom. Your talking about a custom kernel not a rom. Custom roms just have a lot of the bloatware gone.

To say that everything that I had listed has nothing to do with the ROM is not correct. Battery life has to do with the ROM, amongst other things. Also, the other kernel dependant enhancements are part of the whole "package" that is the ROM. You're only looking at what I wrote and trying to split hairs for an unknown purpose, because it doesn't appear you are trying to be helpful. The OP wanted to know if a custom ROM was worth it, I gave him my opinion of the ROM I use so the OP could make up their own mind. If you were wanting to be helpful you could have maybe suggested to the OP to try a different kernel instead of a whole ROM instead and explain why or why not. Have a great day!

Great information, I too enjoy Midnight Rom a little better than the rest out right now. Don't get me wrong, ACS, Bonsai are both great roms. I installed the Standard clean version and it sold me. Was awesome having the ability to download the additions zip also and customize very easily only the programs I need and wanted in a very simple step. To the OP, I would give it a shot if I were you.
Budderocks - just ignore the people that have nothing better to do than make up things to flame about. Never argue with an idiot, they only bring bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Having played the multiple rom games I'll say that I'm a bit tired really. As for bloatware, sdx app remover works for me in that area. I don't need to over clock, phone runs just snappy at default 1ghz. Also I'm not one of those e-penis quadrant score folks, don't care for useless benchmarks that translate nothing to me in everyday use of the phone.
Just my opinion, and the way my Epic works fine for me. Stock EC05, rooted.

Actually I was letting the op know that what you wrote was about a kernel not a rom so at least he knew the differences. I didn't think I was being mean but u guess its how you took it. I do apologize. I don't apprecirbeing called an idiot though
Sent From My Evo Killer!!!

I personally have used 3 Custom ROMS. Truly Epic, Ace ROM, and now I'm on Syndicate.
All of them do show some improvements in everything from general snappiness to having better battery.
Speaking just about Syndicate, it has absolutely no checkerboarding in the browser. It also removes Carrier IQ which if you read the thread for the ROM is a pretty big deal in terms of privacy, performance, and battery life: As mentioned above.
I could never get 8 hours of battery life out of my phone now I'm consistently getting a day of life with 3 hours of screen on time. It's pretty sweet in all honesty.
And if you care about benchmarks, the scores to increase by a pretty decent margin! =D
I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to a stock ROM in all honesty.

Shopping for a new ROM. please advise!

Hey guys and gals. i'm done with BakedSnack. it started out well, but it's gotten so laggy that it's simply not usable. so i'm looking for suggestions for a new rom.
so far i've tried two OMJ's, three BakedSnack, a real early DamageControl and an early Fresh.
basically i'm looking for all the standard hardware(wifi, 4g, cam, etc) to continue functioning. i'd also like decent battery life(a whole day is more then enough) i don't want to lose my 50fps unlock. i'm also looking for something optimized for performance. apps opening and closing smoothly and quickly, screens animating smoothly and most importantly no lag while using swype(that happens now with BS and it's giving my all kinds of strange phrases when i try to type)
can someone suggest some new roms? and yes, i know i could go read through dozens of postings and look at features, but id much rather hear about their behavior in the real world.
thanks!!

Calkulin's EViO is what you're looking for. It's located here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745205
that looks really promising! but do i need to install a new kernel? i'm currently running bakedsnacks latest and i'm worried that it's part of my speed problem
Honestly, if Baked Snack is lagging, you might have a different issue. Lag issues are a lot of time related to your kernel. Try flashing Netarchy's latest (not the beta but the stable one...I forget the numbers) and see how that goes. I've tried almost all of the ROMs but haven't found anything as good as BS.
it started out awesome, everything was slick and zippy. now, about three weeks in, it takes nearly 45 seconds to get handcent to open. then when it does open, i have to wait 15-20 seconds for the keyboard to appear. then it takes a bit for the keyboard to get situated cause as soon as i try swipping, the tracer is all over the place :-/
could it be that the kernel didn't flash properly? maybe if i reflash, it'll fix my speed issues?
This is after you reboot the phone every day?

Have you tried a simple wipe of your cache or davlick? You will not lose valued info and it will speed up your system.
Laggy yea ok, not sure what your doing but its not on the rom's end . I ran 1.7 for while and it was rock stable no lag no stuttering etc etc
As other roms go try them all see what one fits the needs you have

+1 wipe cache and dalvik and switch to a dif kernel either kings or nets would dobjust fine.

Sounds like a kernel issue to me also. I was running one of his tweaked "best battery" kernels, and started noticing some lag after a while, so I switched to what was the default kernel in 1.5 and the lag disappeared. Also, if you've been running the same bs for a few weeks, then you probably haven't updated recently (like me). Maybe you'll have a better experience with 1.7.

See my sig with all my rom info and scores. Fresh is working lovely for me, and everything works. While some of the processor scores may be lower than what the Evo is capable of, I don't think those scores are bad when you consider I'm running Sense and I have a bunch of apps on my phone that are always hogging up resources (i.e. Facebook and Facebook for Sense, Lookout, eBay, Google Maps, HTC's mail, friendstream, Scoremobile widget, weather channel app, Swype, and a live wallpaper). These scores were achieved with Fresh's 3.1.0.2 rom, and I flashed the 3.2.0.0 which is based on the OTA that has not been released yet, but I lost many features with the new kernel from HTC that saves battery life, so I flashed king's kernel over it until the devs get a chance to play with the new kernel. All my root goodies are fully functional on Fresh 3.2.0.0 with Kings kernel.

Try the wiping and maybe another kernel - say what you will about BS, but Hero does you give you kernel options!

i agree with the wiping before and choosing the proper kernel, also what resource intensive apps are you running? maybe you should post a list of installed programs, atrackdog allows you to export.

I'm having no problems with BakedSnack 1.7 and kernel #5. It is the best Sense ROM, in my opinion.

I tried BS 1.7 on a fresh install today and I was not a personal fan. It would bog down and the camera could not focus for squat. Meh.
I really like evio because it does not resize pictures sent using the standard messaging client, a big bonus imo. Paired with BFS#6 and even though I keep trying other roms, I alwasy nand back to my evio.
How do you manage to get 50 FPS on your evo. i am also running the new fresh rom and i am only getting 30 fps. please advise

Baked Snack 1.3 *Curious*

I've been hearing a lot about a ROM called Baked Snack and have tried to do some research on it to no avail. I would like to know more about the latest version Baked Snack 1.3 but am unable to. Has anyone tried this? How is the battery life/performance?
Thanks,
P.S. Hope this thread survives, I know it seems to be a touchy subject on XDA.

I'm using it. Works pretty well. Has some issues (what ROM doesn't?). Mostly the Launcher (doesn't matter which launcher) will crash and you have to push the "Force Close" button. It then recovers almost instantly and is fine for awhile again.
Honestly, even though it can run at 1.3GHz and you can surely measure the difference in benchmark, I really don't notice any difference in speed. Maybe some very resource demanding app might be faster on this ROM as compared to the stock ROM, I just didn't notice any lagging on either ROM.
Slingplayer doesn't work just right as often the sound and video isn't synched, but apparently the problem isn't the slower processor speed as the performance is the same at 1.0 and 1.3 GHz.
I must say I'm kinda miffed at Hero (the developer) as he has a website with a forum. You have to donate to gain access to his forum which I have. I cannot get him to respond to my requests to grant access to his forum. I'd consider donating more that the minimum but not until he starts responding and allows me access to his forum.
i used it for a while. its pretty sharp, totally themed with a black/green concept. very fast, snappy ROM. my phone kept freezing when OCed to 1.3 but runs like a champ at 1.2.
i switched to bubs aosp magic 0.4.1 to try out the more stock aosp android feel but kept the baked snack kernel for a while.
i actually then ran some linpack tests and switched to phoenix 1.4.3 to compare and the phoenix just barely edged it out with those tests (also OCed to 1.2) which surprised me!
overall i really liked the baked snack ROM, VVM works fine (doesnt on AOSP ROMs) but it was time to try something else out. i'd give it a shot, i might go back to it at some point it really is a cool ROM.
EDIT: i never had launcher or anything else FC on me, was very stable.
Thanks for the replys, have you noticed anything about battery life? I'm getting currently around 16 hrs with light to moderate use using fluffkernel ver. C.
I'm running a modified version of 1.3 with the mix up kernel. Its the most stable combo I have tried. I got a couple more bus to work out and then I will be releasing my version to the public

Personally, im stable @ 1.3 and if speed is your thing i get an avg of 10.5s on Linpack with the highest being 10.9xx...all in all is pretty good but everyone has there preferences. One more thing i will say, i don't agree without his forum setup/donation but hero has replied fairly quickly to me

Still using Enom's The Official. Anyone else?

I'm just curious. There are so many great ROMs out there for our nexus ones thanks to the fantastic devs. But my preference is still Enom's. I like stock builds so I've tried cyanogenmods and Geo's stock build as well. Great ROMs both. But at the end of the day my preference is still Enom's due to the ease of setting up a2sd and dalvik cache locations right from inside the modded spare parts, the ease of installing mods like FM radio, T-Mobile WiFi calling, dsp manager, HTC sense camera, audio boost kernel, HTC sense music and games, all right through the spare parts. I know that cyanogenmod can now do all these things (apart from apps2ext) but I like the implementation and ease in enom's. Also the ability to control CPU speeds and whatnot from spare parts as well.
The one thing which I don't understand though is performance. I'm not talking about benchmarks. I'm talking about noticing it in browser scrolling performance. Using dolphin mini in all ROMs. For some reason I find that Enom's ROM takes the cake there even over cyanogenmod. And I don't understand why. I'm using Enom's stock kernel and my CPU settings are very stock (998mhz max, 245mhz min, on demand governor). But scrolling on a webpage for most sites is like iPhone smooth on Enom's and the others is always very slightly stuttery. You have to really look to notice but the difference is there. This is with everything the same on all ROMs, flash on demand, text reflow not enabled.
Anyways just wanted to hear anybody else's opinions.
And Enom if you're listening, we miss you and your great work.
I am also still using the Enomther's rom
I think this is the fastest and the most efficient rom.
do you guys still watch vhs?

Still on Enom's but I'm looking to switch to the Gingerbread.
I'm waiting for the next stable Cyanogen (without the so called wonk). I think I'll have to do a lot of tweaking to get it to the state I want. Enom's ROM needed very little to give me an aesthetically pleasing style. Cyanogen is pretty chaotic. (I think if it could be changed it was ... whether it needed to be or not!).
I'd like to find another ROM that was like Enom's in that it added sensible, useful enhancements and was still usable as a phone for everyday use... suggestions welcome!

Lol. No seriously though,
Are any of you noticing the performance difference? I mean try loading up androidcentral.com for example. And just scroll up and down. It's buttery smooth on Enom's ROM for me, whereas Geo's, Cyanogenmods, and the MIUIs are almost there, and to the untrained eye they are very smooth, but if you're looking for it, you can see the difference. (Using dolphin mini, no text reflow, plugins on demand).

The call wonk has been fixed for a few weeks at least now. The only glaring bug I have using build #87 is the lock screen wake/black screen, but that only takes 5 seconds till it turns right back on after waking it again. I don't know if that has been fixed but I have had no call problems at all.

[Q] Speed with the 3.0 Roms

Hey guys I have been trying to work with the 3.0 Sense roms to find the best one for me, my big issue is speed, man they really lag on my phone. Is there anything that I can do to boost speed, wish I could just have a few of the 3.0 things and keep the old stuff for reliability and speed. Any help would be cool including what rom to run and how to make it fast!
what things are you wanting to keep from the 3.0?
Have you tried Synergy? 2.1 with some 3.0 elements and I didn't have any of said issues. Was as close to the 'next step' without any deal breaking issues. You could also run the field of the 'newer' Sense ROMs until you settle, as some might not play nicely.

What kind of slowness/lag are you experiencing? If it's mostly when switching from one task to another, you may be limited by memory. For example, if you find the launcher is slow to come back up, it may be getting killed while you run something else.
I just finished a few days each on MikG and Synergy. That was after a long time on CM7 and then various FroYo Sense ROMs before that. My experience on MikG/Synergy was that it generally did things well when they were in the foreground. But I couldn't multitask at all. If I was listening to music and I opened up Gmail, for example, the music app would almost always get killed. Or coming back to a browser window would be slow, because it had to reload the page instead of still having it in memory. And that's on a Hybrid 2.1/3.0 ROM. I actually do like a lot of the Sense parts, but I just couldn't live with that.
I tried some of the RAM optimization scripts, and they didn't help for my usage patterns. Basically I think we're approaching the limit of what can be done with 512MB of RAM.
They pretty much all lagged for me as well but not this one..i REALLy love it.

Thanks guys I think your right I think we are close to the best the phone can do and that is that, I did find one from a guy saying its the best rom out, seems really fast but has some bugs, I may hang in there with him and see if he can get them ironed out.
I say try synergy. I use it and I experience very little lag with it.
Yeah, I have tried most of all of them too. I found a little lag in most of them except for Synergy RC2. It has been completely awesome. Battery life is amazing and even after I filled my homescreens full of widgets and icons its still smooth as butter. I never get any lag anymore. Its worth a try and it has so many customizations you can add to it unlike any other rom. Try Synergy RC2. You can't go wrong.
King's kingdom Rom should fit the bill for you. Exceptionally fast. I recommend the stock odex version.

He's right ya know. Even with a theme over it , this ROM is flawlessly smooth and fast.

Roms, Roms, Roms What is the best

What roms would you guys recomend i use, im currently using Cyangeon Mod 7 but i would like to know if there are any others like that
Thanks Sam
Do you or do you not want blur? If you do want blur, maybe try aura or alien. If you don't, stay with CM.
Try Aura debloat version. Has almost all blur crap removed. Faster than CM7 also except on boot up.
Assimilated via WinBorg 4G
Alien: most stable and best battery life of the roms I've tried
Aura: lean running and most updated of the existing roms, although battery life is slightly worse than Alien. Darkside is really an extension of Aura in my book and it's the rom I currently use.
CM7: I love this rom for all the cool new customizable features, but no fingerprint scanner is a deal breaker. Someone said "some people forget there was life before the fingerprint scanner", well there was life before electricity too. I don't want to give up on one of the most convenient aspect of my phone when there are other alternatives.
I'm using the bionix v1.3.1 with dragon 1.4 kernel, its real fast and smooth on my vibrant

I dont want blur its a pile of crap i dont see why it was invented,i may try aurara or whatever its called
hey everyone I need help with my battery life cause this is just ridic
, so I'm running my phone on alien with faux123 0.2 kernel
and my radio is N_01.77.33P on bell and I text and facebook quite alot but i'm pretty sure my phone should last for more then 5 hours right? lolol So how do I fic this? Should I try at&t radio that's N_01.77.30P?
Redpill... v4. The new redpill coming out will be based on CM.... it will be sweet
Sent from my atrix running redpill v4 / faux oc'd to 1.3ghz and uv'd.
I hate threads like this and the title makes me hate it even more.
Atrixn00b, try uninstalling facebook, I've heard it screws your battery pretty hard.
also, install watchdog and check if you have any other rogue apps
Does red pill have a big theme base like cm7 and is it as user friendly?
Depends what you use for phone for. All the de-blur roms I used broke contacts and corporate email, sometimes even sms. Seemed like the majority of them took an exisiting rom, removed the blur .apk applications, and broke a lot of usability for some speed.
I think the whole fastest rom thing is a bit of bs. Almost every rom ive ran has been speedy aside from the official 4.5.91, or froyo with all the ATT apps installed.
Alien4 was the last rom and probably the most stable, also the best battery. Speed is terrific, near CM7. All around the best rom imo. Better corporate mail client than CM7 too w/ search functionality.
CM7 was not stable for me but showed a lot of promise, I had dialer issues and some weird app hangs. Felt like I was constantly needing to reboot to get things working again. Looking forward to future releases though.
Okay yh it does break some functionality but blur did do much for me anyways as i just replaced it all with handcent and stuff like that so it doesnt bother me much about lost functionality, but i tried alien and didnt really like it tbh im using cm7 because its what i have been recomended multiple times
-sigh- okay . Ill try uninstalling it. Also what are the values I should uv my phone to?

I don't believe that for a second! I think auras battery is phenomenal as good as any other rom probably even better, but just like any new rom you flash. you gotta callibrate your battery of course or you may have poor performance.

I don't really have poor battery performance. Right now I am at 1 day and 6 hours with 5hr 34min of screen time and battery of 28%. I just mean that when I was on Alien I had slightly better battery life.
I don't keep track of statistics because of generally excellent battery life. However at the end of my work day I find Alien to be slightly better.
Anyway, with the latest Faux kernels battery is phenomenal, I'm not sure how much the minor differences between roms would matter. They generally all have excellent battery life and stability. Many many thanks to Faux and the Aura/Darkside/Alien rom developers.
I changed my radio from 33p to 30p. Now it could use two days one charge.
