Hi Guys,
Firstly, the specs:
-Tab is rooted (using Gingerbreak)
-Tab has CWM Recovery installed
-Tab is on ROM - ACER_A500_1.139.05_COM_GEN1
-Tab is on Kernel - unity_V3_picasso_acer (Due to my idiocy)
-Tab is on OS - 3.0.1
Now, the story:
My A500 (stock 3.0.1) was not receiving the OTA update to 3.1 so I jumped on these forums and began reading... I decided that I wanted to flash to the Virtuous Picasso ROM so, after rooting and installing CWM without issue, I then downloaded the Virtuous_Picasso_v1.1.0.zip and followed the video found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1129826
but i got this error when i 'choose zip from sdcard'
-- Installing: /sdcard/Virtuous_Picasso_v1.1.0.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/Virtuous_Picasso_v1.1.0.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
I tried loads of stuff (flashing other roms and kernels) but I kept getting this error. Out of frustration I tried formatting the sdfcard (which deleted my backup) and flashing the unity_V3_picasso_acer kernel and it actually worked.
So after flashing the sdcard again I tried Virtuous_Picasso_v1.1.0.zip and 'worked'. But now for some reason it wont even boot past the ACER screen (I can still boot into CWM Recovery).
PLEASE HELP!!!
ps. This is my first post on xda, let me know if i have/haven't given enough/too much info!
A quick list:
Did you wipe the tablet before you installed the new rom? If no then do so now and repeat the process.
Did you check md5 sums? If no check them now.
Did you try using a different SD or an USB drive?
Format /system and /flexrom from "mounts and storage" menu in CWR. Then do a full wipe and reinstall the rom
Sent from my HTC Sensation using XDA App
thanks guys
had to format the /system and /flexrom and then use a usb drive instead the sd card..
you guys are awesome!
when you CHANGE roms or kernels wiping cache and dalvik cache will usually prevent this. If you are just upgrading the same rom/kernel to a newer version you shouldn't have to wipe. Unless the dev tells you to in his/her post

What file are you installing named "update.zip"?
If you're flashing a ROM, you should be choosing "install from zip file" , then "choose zip file from sdcard"
Yes I've tried it that way, but like u said its not installing anything not even with a different SD card.
......I wish someone was located in Philadelphia that I can have them do it n actually see the problem ...):

And yes I tried update zip n even tried the stock ROM....nothing ...
Could you perhaps post a video of what CWM is doing when you try to flash a new rom?
Also have you tried to do the downgrade down the 3.0.1 and then rooted, install acer recovery and try the whole process again? It's worth a try.
ok so i flashed my a500 tab with acer recovery and I have tried to install a new rom and now it will not let me install any rom!!
After you installed acer recovery you
Boot into acer recovery
Then once into acer recovery you have to flash cwm from within acer recovery.
Then boot into cwm and select the rom that you put on the root of your external sd card.
Something strange going on.
ok i could only turn it on by power + vol - button...
its stuck on the Acer logo, i tried a hard reset (don't care if i lose my root) as they showed on the Acer website and it wouldn't even do that....
so i have called Acer and being as tho its under warranty i sent it back to get a new one...
I'll reply to this post once i receive it back....Thx everyone!
Hello..I had WajkIUI_multilang_1.11.18_RTL, which was working just fine then i tried a new rom,,i didn't like it so when i tried to go back to the old rom,i just can't finish the installation, when i use the RSD lite to install the original rom it works fine then i root the device, then i installed SndInitDefy then when i go to the recovery menu i can't install the rom,,i've tried manytimes , but the same thing happens:
when i try to wipe the data or cache: E: Can't open /tmp/recovery.log
so i go to the next step by choosing the installation of the rom and i get this message:
E: can"t make /tmp/update_binary
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.8
insallation aborted
Please help my..i don't know what to do now,i went to the Wajkiui rom page and red everything carefully ..but still can't change my rom, i need to insatll the Wajkiui rom
right now the rom is : shadow-128 2.3.4
that alot
Which version of 2ndinit did you use?
The best for wajkiui is 1.4.2
Or you can try to select stable recovery instead of latest recovery.
I'm using the same config(shadow_2.3.4-134_DFP-10.sbf and WajkIUI_multilang_1.12.16_ICS.zip)
i'm using the same version..i've tryied everything in the Recover to install the rom,but i still get the same error message
This is what i'm going:
Rooted the device, installed SndInitDefy_1.42.apk and activated the Sndindefy
i copied the rom into my MC.
started my phone
Entered the boot Menu
in the RECOVERY menu there are only two options: ( Custom Recovery- Stock Recovery )
in Custom Recovery- Wipe data/cache =
formatting data...
formatting cache...
formatting sdext...
No app2sd partition found. Skipping format of /sd-ext.
formatting sdcard:/.android_secure...
Data wipe complete.
E: cant open /tmp.recovery.log
then i choose: install zip from sdcard
i chose the rom zip.

Ok...
I dont't know what it could be...
Try wipe dalvik cache too.(under avanced menu)
And try to format your sd card.
It worked for me with the "shadow_2.3.4-134_DFP-10.sbf".
rooted by "root4defy134.zip" (applied in stock motorola recovery)
then installed 2ndinit 1.4.2 (2.0 worked too) and installed the latest wajkiui.
Try downloading the zip file again. Maybe it's corrupted.

I've formatted the memory card..i downloaded the rom again..the problem isn't with the rom..its in the RECOVERY option..cuz b4 installing the rom the device isn't able to wipe neither the cache nor the data...and after that the rom is unable to install

Then I turned usb-debugging off and rebooted my phone.

E: Can't open /tmp/recovery.log
4) I then select wipe data/factory reset
5) then it says this: Formatting DATA
Formatting CACHE
FORMATTING SDEXT
No app2sd partition found. Skipping format of /sd-ext
Formatting SDCARD:/.android_secure
Data wipe complete
E: Can't open /tmp/recovery.log
6) After that i select install zip from sdcard
7) then I select choose zip from sdcard
8) then I select the zip file containing the rom
9) And it says: Finding update package

E: Can't make /tmp/update_binary

Now I can't go any further and can't use my phone at all
I hope u guys can help me, and that I haven't F*ed up my phone
I have a quite similar problem.
On a defy+,rooted 2ndinit installed, backup-ed first, download the new quarx05/03 ICS, put the zip on sd, wipe data, reboot and start to install ics, but the message was

Thanks to the previously backup I can use may phone as usual.
What I have done wrong with de ICS installation?
Thanks
PS. Sorry for probable a dummie question:What we have to do with md5 zip near the CM9 Jordan.zip?
A little help please about the subject?

Does you disabled the usb debugging before flashing?
Yes I do, but nothing change,
Thanks
if I'm not mistaken the last release of 2nd init is not compatible with defy. Try to check this on the development forum. I hope I have been of help.
I'd tried with both 1.0.7 latest and 0.6.1.
With latest, the phone is blocked.
Thanks
I had used this. Try with it
P.S. sorry for my bad english.
Tried, the same errors,
Thanks
I don't know. Sorry. By the time i had used that.
I think you need to go to stable recovery after you wipe your data from custom recovery

What do you mean by "stable recovery"? You talk about version 0.6. of 2nd init or something else?
Can you show a step-by step procedure?
Thank you in advance.
However, which is the procedure to un-root a defy+ and to have it with the original, fresh system?
I had flash a new SBF, root with Unlockroot v2.3, anything else doesn't work, 2ndinit v2.0 stable, wipe data/cache/dalvik (same errors), try to install cm9-ics, the same error "Can't make /tmp/update_binary"
What the f.....?

Hi, I have exactly the same problem.. Trying to find a solution but is quite difficult. First I thought it has something to do with the partitioning, as stated in THIS topic. But, in THIS topic, people say that partitioning the SD card is not necessary at all..
@Cretu22: Yes stable recovery is CWM 0.6
Don't install stable recovery! I too faced this issue when I flashed using stable recovery. In snd init install Latest recovery and then try flashing your ROM. That should work..
I did choose the stable version indeed 0.6.7.
Now i did uninstall it and installed the latest 1.0.7, but when I reboot my phone it won't get into the boot menu but just boots into android. Tried it several times, but only with 0.6.7 I seem to be able to get in the menu

Okay!! I hope you were pressing the volume down button when the blue LED came?? Try doing this again all over.. I mean reinstall 2nd init and then latest recovery.. I remember doing this once(instal latest recovery after I installed stable recovery)..

Yes, its working Pressing the volume down button was not necessary with 0.6.7, that was what went wrong. Now the zips installed like a charm
i know the answer and is very simple
the problem is that you cannot create that specific folder.... because it already exist, cmp (connected music player) creates it, just delete it from SD and done!
Hi!
I've been using CM9 nightly's since some days ago, but when I updated to the version of the day 19, it began with FC until that this morning, it reboot suddenly and it hasn't boot again.
I suppose that if i reflash the XXJW4, so i've tried it but, when it tries to boot, it boots on recovery and gives the following errors:
E: copy_dbdata_media: Can't mount /dbdata
your storage not prepared yet. please use UI men u for format and reboot actions.
Meida files copy failed
---Deleting files
E: failed to mount /dbdata (File exists)
E: delete_data_files: Can't mount /dbdata
your storage not prepared yet. please use UI men u for format and reboot actions.
Meida files copy failed
----Updating filesystem....
E: failed _filesystem_for_rfs:can't mount /dbdata
Of course, it doesn't boot now.
Any solution? Thanks a lot!
I had similar problem and I had to do full cycle
restore from recovery also was giving me bootloop
1. flash stock gingerbread rom
2. flash CF-Root (corresponding with ROM)
3. install CM9 from recovery (wipe data and cache).
If you still can go to the download mod, try to flash a ginger stock rom.

# 77To those of you who get bootloops after flashing:
Go into download mode, and flash this, via odin, after you unzip it. (i.e. flash the .tar file, as usual - not the zip).
dbdata.tar
Cheers
Explanation: The bootloops are caused because the dbdata file is missing from the rom (it's just a Kies upgrade, not a full rom), and you probably ticked repartition when flashing.
nope.
in my case repartitioning was not checked, because I'm having a bootloop after flashing kernel, updatet rom, ... from CWM, so there is no option to repartition.
Those recovery fixes never worked for me, but maybe authors case is easier.
finally i have fixed it flashing a stock rom (JVU), XXJW4, root, CM9 and that is! thank you everybody!
Yes. Me too.
But... I've had boot-loop like 8 times now. It's irritating I have to flash stock, CM9, slim-ics every time. even worse I don't know what causes the boot-loop. Tooday I just rebooted to CWM, cleaned dalvik-cache and cache and my phone didn't start any more. I was on semaphore 1.0.0s kernel.
Now I'll try stock slimICS kernel and we'll see...
Hello,
I decided that as I was tired of Google Play's ever growing size and because my phone had started making random error noises I'd try rooting it. I also like trying out stuff with technology. It's proving more difficult than I expected though
Here's what I have / what I did:
1. Rooted phone using update.zip that I got from somewhere on XDA.
2. Put a temporary CWM file and ROM (Cyanogenmod 7.2 which I got via XDA: 'CM_totoro_RC_04').
3. Went into CWM and tried to install the ROM. I can't remember exactly what happened but it looked like it was working i.e. there was an 'installation complete' message but when I boot into recovery mode some blue text comes up and what I'm left with is:
"(Invalid argument)
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery-last_log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
E: failed to mount /cache
(Invalid argument)"
I think there's more than that but that's what I'm left with on the screen.
I did wipe the user data and cache and I have tried a different CWM but there's no change.
I'm using a laptop with a Linux system and it won't recognise the phone in its current state. I think Heimdall is a cross-platform equivalent to Odin but I'd prefer not to get into that as I'd like to try and keep things simple. I have a second phone (which is working and recognised by my laptop) so I can put ROMs etc on its SD card and then physically transfer the SD card into the Galaxy Y.
I do not have a backup of the Galaxy Y before rooting so I don't think it's easy to get back to where it was before I rooted it.
Is the CWM fully compatible with the Galaxy Y? How come the message says that the installation is complete yet it's not working? Am I not following the correct steps after it says installation complete (I think I selected 'reboot' from CWM at this point)? Am I not giving the phone long enough to boot after flashing the ROM (it seems to stop at the Samsung logo screen)? Is it worth trying a different ROM, after all CM7.2 is an unofficial port?
Prior to rooting I hadn't altered anything important i.e. the phone was as it was at manufacture.
On re-reading the installation instructions I note that I didn't:
- Format /system partition
- Install the kernel provided at Download links
I couldn't find the kernel though - was this a critical oversight?
Any help or suggestions much appreciated. Thanks!
To start off with if you are using cm7 you need to be using the cm7 common kernel
You also need to use the ext formatter to convert system to ext
Once that is done you need to reboot to recovery
Format system data cache
Mount system data cache
Flash rom zip
If you still get cache error just make a nandroid backup in cwm then advanced restore cache only
Full instructions and links to everything you need will be on the cm7 rom thread
If all else fails flash stock rom via odin & start again - see my firmware thread Link in signature
Thanks! As seems normal though the information isn't that clear (to me at least). I searched for 'cyanogenmod 7.2 galaxy y' and went to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2537457
In the second post are 2 downloads - I'm assuming it's the first one as I think the one I've already tried the 'totoro' one?
I'll give this a bash later and post back...
