Phone Overheating - EVO 4G General

Well, I live in Arizona so it is pretty hot here, and my phone, as a result gets pretty hot as well. Anyway, after some lengthy use the phone gets to about 40 degrees centigrade and then after a bit turns itself off, and vibrated five short times. After that, I cannot turn the phone back on until I pull the battery and put it back in again. Is this normal? Or is this just a faulty EVO?

I play a couple games that cause my evo to get very hot ie star legends, however it has never shut off on me. i never checked the temp, but it definitely gets very hot to the touch and even though I continue to play, it doesn't turn off..
This is just from my experience.

It's a faulty cpu temp sensor - the phone must be replaced. Search for my identical thread posted about a week ago.

My phone runs ok since this issue appeared, I just make sure to keep the battery < 40C.
I also cool the phone to approx. 30C on an AC vent before flashing any roms or mods - it struggles booting up when the temp is elevated but runs great once booted and under 40C. This will have to do until the 4g's true successor is released...I love my rooted phone running Evo Deck and SZ bfs

I hate when you buy a electronic device that is defective and they give you a refurb as a replacement. Hope you guys get root soon.

It is kind of like a swift kick to the junk, furthered by the fact that they gave me an older refurb. Not a fancy 004 refurb... Anyway, patiently awaiting root, since I in no way shape or form have the skill to figure something like that out.. I gave up that career a while ago...

I am in AZ also. When I get high temps, my indicator lights flash an alternating red/green, usually while charging, but it has never turned itself off....

[Q] EVO heating up....wtf???

Has anyone experienced their EVO heating up? Since the kick stand is metal or sumn, it gets super warm, enough to make u wonder how hot will it get. I'm a noob so I'm not sure if this is normal.
any feedback or suggestions will be appreciated.
Yes this is natural. My battery will top out at 110f with normal use. The kickstands does a nice job of heating up. I wouldn't worry.
Sent from my PC36100
It's normal. A lot of GPS use also gets it pretty warm pretty quick. Don't worry.
It is normal but you should probably not use it when it gets so hot, let it sit for 5 min and it should drop below 95F.
My evo would also get pretty warm after normal phone operations and would get extremely hot when using gps. My phone was so bad and so hot that it would begin randomly rebooting and wouldn't stop until I put the phone next to the ac for a few minutes or removed the battery for a few minutes. It made my phone reboot a minimum of 10 times a day. I got so frustrated with it that I had to get a replacement and lose my root. Now I'm hoping that stock 2.2 is rooted soon. No problems out of my refurbished EVO so far.

Mine gets warm fast when trying to find signal, other than that it stays cool.
Oh and wifi tether for two hours straight over 4g made it hit 115°f the other day.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I have no complaints about this - it stays cool for me throughout. I do remember noticing it got mildly warm a couple of times, but it happens so rarely and it's so unimportant, I didn't bother checking for anything, or even remember what I was doing on it at the time.
Both times I tried to use GPS (Google NAV first then Copilot) my phone got up 130°F and locked up. I had pull the battery and let it cool down. Disappointing at best.

Woah....130? That's crazy, surprised phone didn't fry. It'll probably have to get hotter than that. As long as the phone doesn't mess up, I will continue to enjoy this phone.
My phone generally only gets really hot in the car, when I'm using gps. Luckily I use a vent holder for it, so I just turn the air on low, and the phone is cool to the touch when I get to where I'm going. Don't know what I'll do in winter though...

Mine starts to overheat when the sun hits it when sitting on my passenger seat in my car. The phone is black, and my case is black. It's going to absorb the suns energy.
mine got really hot to the point where the led would flash green then red....135 or 145 degrees Fahrenheit I forget

Mine does this too and as soon as I unplug it the led turns off. Think it might be the overclock. I had mine clocked at 1.2 and scaled it down to 1.9 due to phone locking up and rebooting. Sometimes I have to wipe cache and davlik cache and reflash firmware and kernel along with all my mods due the phone not going past the splash screen.

Guess u didn't want to get yelled at for posting elsewhere about root so you felt the need to slip it in here there was no need to mention as it has nothing to do with OP. Root will happen sooner or later grow up and wait like the others who are waiting no need to toss it in unrelated topics...we are all getting sick and tired of people *****ing about not having root! You probably made your comment up just so you could add your little remark about not having root!
Back on topic.....you guys have to remember there is a 1 ghz processor in our bad ass phones so there will be some heat unlike a computer there is not any fans or big heatsinks that will absorb the heat so with heavy use or game playing its gonna get hot plain and simple its not a defect so nothing to worry about until it starts melting in your hand....then I would say something is wrong...
Yeah, mine is running at 40 C all the time, upwards of 60 if I use the GPS.
You know...I actually hadn't noticed....and I use my Evo a lot. Only time I've really noticed it overheating is when I use WiFi tether but that's expected.
Sent from my Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Evo!
Mine usually only gets hot when I leave it sitting somewhere without proper ventilation or when I'm riding in the passenger seat and it gets some sun. Otherwise, its pretty uncommon unless I'm really running everything at once. If you have all your radios running at max (downloading large files, checking your location on Google maps, tethering, listening to pandora through bluetooth, all at the same time) then its going to happen no matter what because all the phone's components are pretty powerful and aren't ventilated like computers due to size constraints. I know the kickstand gets hot when the phone warms up, but as long as you don't see the overheat lights, and you don't let it stay hot for extended periods of time, there should be absolutely no danger. I believe there are failsafes if it overheats for too long, but I don't know. My G1 used to get hot a lot, and it was no where near as powerful. Those were the days...
This damn issue was the fact I returned my Evo 4G to Sprint to get it replaced. The Phone was getting so hot to the point the screen was hot towards the bottom of the phone, the back was hot, and the phone kept doing restarts. My phone im Pretty sure had a defect. Not even a week after rooting thru the unrevoked method, I installed Wifi tethering App and **** went down the drain no later then a few days after. The phone began heating up and going thru 15 minute boot loops at a time. The only way to stop it was to pull the battery and let the phone cool down. The phone had to be in optimal Tower range with strong signal strength to avoid this overheating during data sessions. If i was in areas with three bars or lil lower and began running youtube, I could not go thru 4 or 5 youtube videos in a row without the ****er restarting. It was annoying and frustrating. I got a feeling something got ****ed up along the way after rooting and installing Wifi tether. I realized using Wifi tether heated the phone up real damn bad. Something must have got fried or the way the phone processed data after that was just crapping out.
So yeah my issue was way worse becuz of this overheating
I am having the same problem as you drewtorrespr. I rooted a while back using the Toast method and everything ran fine until 2 days ago. Now it seems everyday around mid day my phone heats up and starts rebooting. Not sure if its the ROM ver or hardware defect or rogue program.
How do I flash the original factory ROM back on the phone so I can take to sprint and have them look at it or does it matter. Will they just reload it for me ya think?

G2 insanely hot battery

I am running CM7 nightlies on my G2, a few days out dated because I have been insanely busy lately... But today in class my phone heated up insanely bad. Sizzled my finger on the metal back plate. I immediately ripped the battery out and let it cool. I think the battery bloated a little bit.
When I put it back in after cooling, all seems normal. The battery started out at 85% and drained to 44% during this. All I can think is that I charged it on the way home to top it off from about 50 to 85% battery, and then topped off a little more, bout ten minutes while at home. Got back to class and then it happened a few minutes later.
Also, I used SetCPU....BUT not overclocking, I had it stock speed, on demand governor, and screen off profile to 245mhz.
What could cause this? I called tmobile and they wanna swap out the phone itself because the battery is not currently bloated so it must be device related.
I am scared to let them swap it out, because I don't wanna revert my phone back to stock, and then have to root the new one. Are ALL G2's rootable? I don't want to risk getting a new one that can't be cracked

That makes me feel better, if I have to replace.
They were going to call me in 20 minutes after I started charging it during the initial call, but they called my wife's Vibrant which never rang, I just got a voice mail notification They left message, and I have no way of calling that particular rep back in technical without going through the entire process over again But, it's still charging, went from about 35%-80% and it's not hot at all. I'm just very confused how this is an isolated thing.
I'm about to be gone from home for 5 weeks, and need my phone, Worst timing ever for this

I'm just wary to change the entire phone out and keep the part that scares me into the new one. If I have a problem, I'll call them. It seems to have been just that once. I'll be leaving in about a week probably, and phone is vital. so I hope I get this figured out.
Do NAND backups swap to new phones? Like just NAND this one how it is, and stick it onto my replacement? Or does it backup things specific to that exact phone?

Either the battery itself is fried, or some SOFTWARE you're running is responsible. Swapping out the phone itself is pointless. Try a WIPE and see if the problem doesn't come back. If it does, replace the BATTERY.
I didn't read if yo ugot it fixed, but check your battery status... liek what's been using that. I had that one time and like my email app for example used a **** load... I reflashed it and started it from new and it's fixed now.
exactly what is the point of overclocking on the G2?
I can tell why youd use SetCPU on the G1 but what is the point of doing it on the G2?

Yes, except that sometimes these hacks can cause problems, so before concluding that the hardware is defective, it is important to return the software to a more natural state and see if the problem goes away. If the problem is present with the hacks and not when without, then it is reasonable to conclude that there is a correlation between the problem and the hack.

For the record, tmobile concluded that it's hardware, not me *can't exactly say I have it fully rooted/modded* and the only reason I called them was that my wife used to work for verizon and it was a known issue that a certain battery style/make/whatever was known to have this exact issue. So she told me to call and ask if it was some known problem that I could tell them my serial to identify if my battery falls under those conditions. They said since it wasn't still bloated by the time I called them, it must be the phone. I talked them out of sending me a replacement... that I'll see if it comes back and immediately call them lol.
I haven't had the issue come back, I think I'm on Nightly 3, and I'm about to flash the latest but I want the battery more charged before I do so. I got like 3x the battery life today than I did the other day.

My Epic is dying :[

So I've had my epic since it came out, traded my evo for it, no problems rooting, loved the community. But now I've ran into a problem that all my technical experience as a Sprint tech has failed to fix.
Starting last night, after watching "Hobo with a Shotgun" (amazing grindhouse style movie, get it), every time I put the phone to sleep for more then 2-3 minutes, it will not wake or ring or anything until you pull the battery. I was on SFR, tried flashing a new kernel, re flashing the rom, flashing a new rom, odin back to stock, same issue every time.
So unless someone knows something I don't, gotta wait until monday to get a refurbished unit.
Sad, this is the first time I've had to get a replacement since my HTC Apache.

The problem is probably that the phone can't wake uo on 100mhz. If you are on a custom kernel you it to 200 MHz as the minimum. My phone will do the same thing if I have the minimum set to 100

Try this. Seems to be working for me so far.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036648
I use to have to set mine at 400mhz to make sure it would wake back up. Since doing this I dropped it back to 200mhz and haven't had any issues yet.
Hurpa Durp, never thought of that... had the same issue on my Hero for awhile, setting it on 200mhz min worked like a charm.
While were on the subject, I have a few interesting thoughts. Since this has never happened before, is my Epic's underclock/overclock threshold degrading? Didn't know that could happen, I though it was predetermined by the quality of the die the CPU was cut from when it was manufactured. Maybe overclocking to 1300 with higher then normal voltage is having some repercussions? Thoughts?

Check to make sure it isn't a lose battery. Try putting something in the between the battery and the bottom of the phone's battery well to force and keep the batter in place against the contacts at the top of the phones battery well, and see if you keep having this problem.
If it continues, then jump back to SRF 1.2. Try wiping cache?

This right here is very good advice! A guy at a cell phone booth taught me this about 10 years ago when I was rockin the nokia 5160 lol. Several phones have this issue. After time I guess the battery door expands and does not keep the battery in place correctly. I've always used a business card, tore it, folded it a couple times and placed it between the battery and cover. I can say I've done this to 5 or 6 of my phones and it solved the issue.

[S4 Active]- So my phone started freezing up on me yesterday...

My experience with my S4A has been amazingly flawless up until yesterday, when it started experiencing one of the issues that killed my experience with the HTC One- random freezes. And what's strange about it is that they are the same type of freezes that my One experienced, only when browsing the web or using an internet based app like Pulse. It has happened 3 times since yesterday and is so bad that I've had to pull the battery to even get it to reboot. Which brings me to one of my suspicions...
The only thing that has changed between me getting the phone set up originally and when the freezes began was the fact that I started swapping batteries instead of charging the phone. Now, phone batteries nowadays are not just like your average AA cell, it has circuitry in it and NFC stuff... is it possible that a defective battery could be the culprit of my woes? I just put in my original battery and am gonna just wait and see if it happens. The other battery that I've been using is a Samsung OEM battery and not a cheap one. I did root and freeze a bunch of stuff, but nothing exotic, and it was fine until yesterday. I doubt anything I did caused this.
Has anyone else experienced any freezes like this? Help me solve this, I really want to keep this phone (at least until the next latest and greatest comes out). TIA

I Haven't had any issues since I've had the phone, going on 3 weeks. I've been rooted and have froze apps in TB with no problems since geohot gave us root. Also have done some other root mods, and have not experienced any issues.
Sounds like just some bad hardware circulating.

I've modded mine a good amount and haven't had any lock ups. I have just about every root app out there. Xposed with nottach, dark phone and contact apk, and cm10.1 messaging app. Froze a lot of bloat too

Man I REALLY hope it's not a hardware issue. I'm so tired of doing the repeated exchange thing. I went through 5 One X's before I found a suitable one, saw that pattern emerging with the One (had 2, both with same issues) and was really hoping the S4A was going to be the answer to my woes. I really love this phone but if it ends up being a hardware thing, I will be incredibly disheartened.

Any way to tell the build dates of our phones? Maybe we could narrow it down to a certain production date.

I dunno... My box is in another state so I won't be able to check it for a few weeks. I bought it on the very first day it was available if that helps any. On a side note, I put my original battery in last night and it hasn't locked up on me since. We'll see what happens by the end of the day.

I am rooted but that's pretty much it.
The only thing I know I was doing at the time was watching a YouTube video then pressed pause.
Next thing you know I picked it up hit the power... Nothing. Hit menu... Nothing. The blue LED was just the normal notification indicator, so I knew it hadn't powered off... Resulted in a battery pull.
I also know that I didn't get any messages or new notifications while the screen was off.

I ALWAYS have issues restoring from titanium backup, esp going from one phone to another. My suggestion is to factory reset and start with a clean slate, cas only then can u verify a hardware issue.

I know on the Captivate the Build Number could be found under the battery (can be found there on the S4A as well) and it was the year/month that the phone was built, or so they say. My S4A Build number is 1306 so I'm guessing it was built the beginning of June...

I would like to know if you have had any more problems since you put your original battery back in? If you could give a update I would really appreciate it. I really think the active is a great phone and I truly like it but if people are having a lot of issues with it, I'll just return it and get something else to save myself a headache down the road. I have a week left on my return date so that's why I was wanting to know.

gf has had similar issues; heres what fixed it.
battery pull
factory reset/restore
reboot
battery pull
reboot
root/etc/restore from there. check to make sure you dont have custom CPU voltage/speed mods enabled; i believe this was the initial culprit, though even after resetting them to stock it would still lock up. it only did it 3 times, and usually right after a new mod, but ONLY if CPU values were changed. after the above procedure, she redid all her cpu values but only AFTER all mods were installed, rebooted, and everything works great again.

The only "issue" I've had with mine is that it's too bright when the brightness is set to max

Same problems no matter which battery. It seems to happen most when I'm using Chrome so I deleted the updates but it's still doing it. It happened while playing a game today which it's never done before. Next step is to freeze Chrome and see if that helps. If not, then I'm gonna factory reset and if that doesn't work, I'm gonna have to exchange it. I really did not want to have to deal with this. With my ridiculous work schedule I don't have the time or the energy. I might just start looking for a different phone because I'm sick of having issues like this.

I would say if the factory reset does not work than it is the phone itself. I had issues like this in the past with my old infuse and I did a factory reset and it took care of it. Hopefully that will help you out so you can keep your phone. Thanks for replying.

Yeah bud, I really hope a reset works. I might do it tomorrow, I should have enough time. I'm just frustrated that I'm having identical issues with the S4A that I had on my One. I was really hoping to find a phone that just works. I don't think I've had a problem free phone since my Epic 4G Touch. My One X had issues (though my 5th one was near perfect), my iPhone 5 was horrible, both my Ones had problems, and now this. I'm just venting now but I'm seriously tired of it. I've got my eye on that new Sony i1 that's coming out in a couple months, I really love their current design choices and I've never tried a Sony before. Or maybe the next Nexus. Who knows. I just don't want to deal with this crap anymore.
