Having Second thoughts. - Galaxy S II General

So when I first got the GSII I thought it was awesome! But 2 things quickly came to fruition.
1.The lightness was great at first but now its almost as a hassle for me, its TOO light, its like I cant even grab it properly like I did with my IP4, im constantly having trouble handling it and it just feels SO delicate! As if its gonna break if I do something wrong or drop it, its too thin for me, that's why Im having trouble holding it at times.
2.Android I have used before and very much enjoyed it but I dunno what happened to me that now its just too much stuff going on for me, with the IP4, it was simple and right to the point, in a way I appreciate all the extra little things that Android bring but I just dont care too much either, surprising cause im a techie. I dunno if its cause I am used to the IP for so long but it just seems like I have to go through more steps to do things that I would only have to do 1 or 2 on IOS. I always get this feeling of cluttered and an unorganized feel on Android while on IOS it just feels simple and straight to the point and organised. I tried WP7 at launch as well and I was super impressed by its UI, smoothness, how everything was so simple and easy to get to/use, frankly I just dont care about customizing and all that, I just want a quick fast and easy experience.
Now dont get me wrong a big problem I had with Android was how it would lag, freeze and sometimes feel like its in a beta stage, I was curious how the DualCore and 1gb ram would make a difference and wow! Im very impressed here! I havent had a single lag, its so smooth and just runs any and everything with absolute ease! This is how I wanted android to be!!
Another thing is the screen, I had 480x800 phones before as well as SuperAmoled and very much enjoyed them, so I was very excited to see the SuperAmoledPlus Display, too my surprise I wasn't that impressed tbh, the blacks are incredible, the contrast honestly seems good but not what I expected, the IP4 seems on par even brighter in some places, but the biggest thing for me is the pixels, since I had 480x800 before and thought it was great, I didn't think it was gonna be a huge difference but wow it is, the retnia display is MUCH better with text. Theres definitely a difference.
All in all Im not sure what to do now, I think I have a beast of a phone in my hands and it IS good but im not satisfied in certain aspects and it seems the months I spent with IOS really took a hold of me, I find myself trying to do little gestures I did in IOS. Theres the IP5 coming but who knows how much that will be and my contract is not up till next year. I cant find a good case for my life on the GS2 while IP4 has several.
Personally I think WP7 is awesome! But the lack of apps and certain things I need is really pushing me away from it. Im not gonna lie sometimes I get annoyed with Apples restrictions and hate itunes but beyond that I very much enjoy it.

Seriously, trade it in and get an iPhone 4. And if that sounds like I'm being trolly and trying to be funny then don't take it that way. I honestly believe that you've picked the wrong phone.
As popular as this phone is, it's obviously not for everyone.

No problem! I read your response and I think I may just wait for IP5, try to get a good sell on this one. I feel dumb, I really thought I was gonna like this one...
What do you think of WP7?

I agree with the post above. The SGS2 isn't the right device for everyone. IMO it's the best device on the market currently. That being said who cares what I think, it's what you think. If you want to get an iPhone I would hold off until Sept when the iPhone 5 is released.

I only skim read the first post but from the number of times I saw "IP4" I think you definately need to jump off the Android bandwagon.
I got this phone two days ago and it's one in a long line of Android phones, if I were to switch to an iphone and do the opposite to you, i'd find myself on modmyi.com moaning about how sucky and locked down apple phones are.
Point is, if you really don't like it, take it back if/while you still can.

I only had WP7 very briefly - on a HD2 that usually ran Android. I liked it, but was put off by how little I could do with it. It felt like going back 10 years to when you were pleased if you could even use your own .mid files as ringtones!

The first point about lightness / thinness can be solved with a £2 case from ebay. Job done.
Android phones can be pretty much set up to be very similar to iOS (only better) with a little patience. In fact android can mimick any other phone, or even be completely unique... can you do that with an iphone? No.
Yes the retina display is sharper for text, and when it boils down to it, the retina is probably the only rival display that can compete with the SAMOLED+ but I personally prefer the latter for its comparatively massive size, brilliant blacks and vibrancy. Horses for courses.
Ultimately I'd agree with the others though. Sounds like you bought the wrong phone. I felt the same way with the iphone 4 to be honest, and it was only when the SGS2 appeared that I knew I had a worthy replacement on my hands.

Definitely in the back of my mind...

Well if you like the ease of use of the iPhone, you should check out MIUI: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130951
There's even an iPhone theme which makes it near identical in look and feel.
MIUI is really easy to use and simple to install. Just an idea.
Otherwise just get an iPhone 4 or 5.

Buying a case would definitely solve issue 1.
Like others have said, with some time and effort you could emulate the iphone look and usability.
Go with what's comfortable for you. Doesn't matter what anyone says.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

I am actually torn between WP7 and Android
But I feel Icecream will be the deal breaker for android
currently am happy with my SGS2 having come from htc hero, but I also have an HTC HD7 wP7 and I love what Micorosoft has done with MANGO.
and Being a Nokia Fan I am definitely gonna for a Nokia WP7 next year
as I specifically took a 12 month contract on my SGS 2 and the SGS2 specs are good enough to last me atleast a couple of years If I do get itchy about android

Too light? WTF?

I second this statement.
I've had the phone for less than a week now and had the same impression, compared to my previous N1.
I just bought a plastic case, it's still light, but it definitely feels better now.

I agree 100% with the OP this is my first android and I was learning on the go. Its very cool device but for some people who just want simple interface they should go for IOS. I do electronics for living and have done a lot of programing in past years. I spent yesterday all day flashing this thing because all the sudden it stopped Sync and Social Hub wont work. It seriously stopped by it self very strange.
I asked all the experts on this website about how to fix it, so far my thread name "social hub Issues" has 100 views and 0 answers. What does that mean? either no one has answer or they think im retard.

No One To Share Joy With But XDA...

It's crazy. The phone is great, it's what I've wanted for years. I got it just today and besides having to get used to the on-screen keyboard I must say it is the best phone I have ever used.
The Rhodium, in retrospect, was a clunky machine, and one of the best windows had to offer. This late in the game though, just an antiquated OS. I am so happy to be done with a Windows.
Why the thread?
Do you, geeks that we are, find no one in your immediate circle who understands?
I got home and am soooo satisfied win my decision, no longer having to tinker and be OCD, I know, not very geeky. Just I think I have been spending a bit to much time modifying and not enjoying my phone. I also didn't want be in he hands of Steve and the fruit phone.
Any similar stories...
Mine stopped vibrating after 5 seconds, apart from that great phone.
Quick tip: Setup haptic feedback on the keyboard if you haven't already. It truly makes a touchscreen keyboard 5x easier to use/learn.
I'm basing my opinion on haptic with the N1 vs. non-haptic w/ my iTouch. It's nice to have "something" that tells you that you just pressed something.
Also, learn to use the auto-correct. Especially holding down new words/names that it normally "tries" to auto-correct. (Such as "app(s), Haha, and various others that the phone tries to correct to really odd words) (Haha, will default to BAHAMAS!!!... WTF?)
Just thought I'd try to be useful
I know exactly what you mean... I got a TyTN II and the first thing I did was flash a custom ROM so it would actually be useable... then, after about 6 months, I found out I could run Android on it... really well! After a couple months of looking at it, I finally took the plunge to see what Android was all about, not thinking I would be blown away, especially considering I was running it on a WM device.
What did I discover? Android ran better on my Kaiser than WM did! I was hooked, and a couple months later got myself a G1 to replace the Kaiser... The G1 still had some issues, IMO, in terms of speed and found myself still flashing customer ROMs, but it wasn't out of total neccesity at least.. and now, I have a Nexus One, which is hands down the best phone I have ever experienced! I don't even feel like it is needed to put a custom ROM on it, I have and will again, but the stock experience is more than fulfilling!
Mate, I get the exact same feeling.. No one really "gets" me when it comes to this phone.
It's just a phone they say, what does it do that your HTC Diamond doesn't? Seriously.. the only thing I can come up with, is it has a flash.. But we know it's so much more than that, don't we?
I've already been told by a few people; "oh don't buy googles first phone, it'll have lots of bugs, you should wait till the second release." Little do they know nor understand.
First moment I got my Diamond I flashed it because it had too much carrier crap on it. Who wants everything to be customized by someone else.. Seriously..
*Eagerly awaiting my new shiny phone*
I was quite surprised by no real bugs to be seen or heard of myself. I was wary of the purchase, but easily the best one I ever decided upon.
I'm still trying to see if the great developer folks figure out a re-lock... But every day I'm considering rooting... Ugh!
I can connect to my home PC (Edit: from anywhere with 3G) and mouse and keyboard around on it using the Remote RDP program for Android. I find this impresses people fairly well.
I'm fine with using Gmote for free to pull any music/video to my phone... Still haven't hopped onto the paid apps bandwagon yet. Still working my way through the free apps, to get a grasp on what I like, and don't like.
But, it would be nice to have even more control remotely. I'm just staying in minimal-mode for a bit.
I'm surrounded by iPhone and BB users, most of which are completely, utterly technologically illiterate--I'm talking about people who don't even understand processor speeds/RAM size, so they can't even appreciate how fast the Snapdragon is. People who aren't users of either want one. "Android" is like Greek to them.
I do know a few geeky people, but they're rare around here. :/

I did the exact same thing man. I had the first gen iPhone for about a month, hated it. Then got the AT&T tilt, and flashed a custom rom on it. I worked at T-Mobile, and my co-workers would say, I should just go work for at&t lol, then I finally got the G1 a week before launch and fell in love with android. Its the best OS I could have asked for and knew it would be a winner. Then up until 2 days ago, I finally received the nexus one and WOW, it is so much faster, i'm still shocked. I haven't rooted or installed a new rom because I don't think it needs it. It runs great stock. Awesome phone, that I think only us xda nerds know how to appreciate. It really a great device upgrade for those of us who had stuck with the G1 for so long.
Nice feedback
I made a thread saying why I moved in the Rhodium forum and should have known better. I just wanted to share. They are letting me have it.
But it is so true, this device is a great medium. Customizable, elegant, powerful, what more could we ask for(lets further he Convo)?
Glad you guys love it. I'm looking forward to getting one for my wifey while I get the HD2.
Well then she can hang with the best and you can hang with the rest

Bye bye HD2, hello iPhone!

Had enough of the HD2 now, and after playing with iPhones recently I have reaslised I made the wrong choice. The UI is just so much more intuitive, ok I have to wait till July for OS 4.0 for multi-tasking but who cares
bye!
and whats the reason for this information?
Good luck lapping at Steve's heels. You are correct in that the iphone OS is more immediately user friendly but the HD2 & winmo offer much more that iphone OS can. Good luck with that, oh and it still wont be true multi-tasking

This.
I made the exact OPPOSITE move.
I've owned the 3GS ever since it came out and for the past few months before I sold it it bored me to death. There's very little I can do with it, and once I realized I don't really play mobile games, the decision to sell it became very easy. I like my HD2 a lot more -- more customizable, and more powerful. Plus the small screen of the iPhone (resolution-wise) was grating.
great news for somebody who wants a second hand leo, not everybody affords a new one
godspeed and be happy man

Ah man... just joining the rest of the sheep. There are too many identical Iphone users about! BE INDIVIDUAL!
People who don't want to invest time in a more versatile phone should buy an iPhone, but they will get less for more. And don't expect the iPhone to be perfect, because it's not, it's that's what Apple's marketing machine will try to tell you, but don't count on it to work flawless.

Iphone 4 HD , hd2 killer?

So Iphone 4 has just been announced , it looks pretty neat.
Do you think it's a HD2 Killer?
Will you be getting it?
1. No
2. No
Maybe and no but then again a glass of water can kill any HD2 lol.
If anything I wasn't that impressed with the information released for the iPhone 4, I'm not saying it doesn't look like a good improvement on previous iPhones but I'm not going to quickly ditch my HD2 for it. I'd still prefer to have an EVO but I know that will never happen .
Saying that though, my HD2 is awesome it continually manages to amaze me everyday and thanks to crazy developers here on XDA there's always something new just round the corner for me to try.
In fact my HD2 is the best HD2, everyone elses is just a imitation of my brilliant one, you poor people lol .
I wasn't really impressed with the specs on the iphone 4... Apple really didn't do anything ground breaking with it. Screen size is still the same... But honestly I guess that's why I love my HD2... The screen and the camera... In all fairness thought the OG iphone set the precedent a while ago and other phone manufacturers use that as their benchmark.
Why in the world would I want a phone with a tiny 3.5" screen?
i wonder how much RAM are there in the iPhone 4. the design looks weird for an apple product and i don't like the name at all! the screen resolution is crazy for a 3.5" phone. have they made it at least 3.8 " then it would be great. just cannot go back to a 3.5" screen anymore. and I wonder how does the multitasking work.
Screen too small indeed. Stupid, such a resolution is too fine be put to use on 3.5".
Same but designed as the HD2, same screen size and thin border, yes. They still haven't understood...
One word: NO!
It depends on the user, if you like doing more tweaks and learning more fun on your phone then hd2 is your phone. You cannot do on iphone what you can do on hd2.
I wasnt overly impressed by anything but the fact that you could edit your vidoes via the phone. I suppose any phone could do that but apple always does such a great job of software intergration that its hard to over look.
The book reader app I thought was alittle silly. Specially when thats one of the main points of getting An Ipad. But i guess thats built into the os so not much we can do about that.
lastly I thought that having video chat was cool(even tho evo did it first in the us)but I couldnt get over the fact that it was just via wifi. I would have rather had the option to use it via 3g . Im sure that people will jailbreak it but with the new pricing plans for data who will want to .
Personally I think the data plan change over shadows this release. In places where wifi is readily accessible It guess it wont matter much.
you are talking about that toyphone thing I see people playing with. I guess I might buy it for my kids if I ever have any. For now there isn't anything better can the hd2 with an awesome winmo custom ROM.

1Ghz A4 CPU and 512Mbs RAM? I think not.
In the grand scheme of things HTC are looking at stuffing a 1.5Ghz dual core into some of it's up and coming phones, so I can't see the iPhone 4 competing with that.
And I've never seen anyone bang on about video calls so much in my life, it's a five year old technology!
Oh and the 'redesigned iPhone' heading from that BBC link says it all, same ****, different case.
Dont mean to sound rude but
You asking us if a brand new phone (doesnt matter who its made by) is going to kill of a phone thats half a year old?
Are you joking?
Apple fans will love it.... People who believe all the hype will think that it's the first phone with video conferencing... The rest of us will love to hate it...
More people will end up with an iPhone 4 than an HTC device but I like it that way personally.

Hm, the above looks a lot like a "fanboy" post....
People compare phones all the time, and like it or not, the iPhone is a benchmark device for many.
For me, some aspects of the iPhone are better than the Galaxy S, some are worse.
Overall, I think I'll stick with the Galaxy S, since I love the screen and believe that Android is getting better. But, currently, the iPhone does provide an overall smoother, more polished user experience, and definitely better battery life, IMO.
Being objective does not mean one is a fanboy. Posting threads like this on the other hand....
screen wise i'll take AMOLED over the iphone iris whatever screen.
lag... well only affects the non tekki people, but even if i was technologically challenged, i'd not mind rebooting the phone.
heck all the previous phone i've had, it was normal thing to have to reboot them several times a day, specially windows mobiles ones, and all the memory leaks.
on PalmOS it was only when a specific software hungs
I don't care one bit.
I bought this phone for a reason, it stands up to what i wanted from it, and more.
Even if the army of apple fanboys tries to take people "off" buying this phone, i don't know if you follow the news, but it sells MASSES. Crossed over 1 mil units since launch, and that's even before U.S carriers launcehd it.
Plus it's supposed to arrive in 110 contries total, while now it only sells in 13 or so.
So let the apple fanboys say and do what they want, i don't feel any obligation to "fight" them.
Anyone who will get interested and see it's a good device- will take it, regardless of what iZombies say.
lol macboy shutup, i cant be a fanboy you silly ass, ive never owned a samsung
my point is the guy who wrote an essay about how bad he thinks the SGS is and why he is returning it, has got nearly 2000 views on that thread. will put people off and we want more owners for better support.
thanks
OP, do you consider me one of the iPhone fanboys making SGS look bad too?
BTW, which threads are you looking at that make you feel so persecuted?
You're free to write an essay about why you won't buy an iPhone too... I doubt it'll get very popular though, as there are thousands of those out there already.
it really comes down to "to each their own" choice to get a phone they "believe" is working the way they "think" it is working "properly" for them.
there is no such thing as a perfect phone, else there would be no need for XDA forums LOL
Phone comparisons are done all the time. people come to forums like this one, some to voice their point of view, some just want confirmation, but most just want comfort after purchase.
Each to their own seemed to be the best way. If you go to iphone forums, you will see iphone bashing posts no worst for wear than any other groups.

All serious phone-blogs, that compared the iPhone 4 with the SGS
come to the conclusion, that the SGS is the better choise.
And for all the fanboys out there: the SGS does not drop a call
when you touch the bottom of the phone with your left hand!
You should go to a poor reception area and do a death grip on your SGS. This problem does affect SGS. I've tried it.

You are a fanboy..., you just don't know what you are a fan of
I think it's good to have varying opinions and threads - then people can see both the negatives and the positives and make a better informed choice.

Bull, I tried and and at worst I lose a bar for a second or two.
I always laugh at people who think a phone is worth arguing over.
You pays your money, and takes your choices. There are some people to whom I would never recommend a Galaxy S TBH, and as an ex iphone owner, I still think the iphone is a great phone, but in the end, I was attracted to the google OS and the limitless customisation possibilities. I wanted this, but I also wanted a screen that could rival the iphone 4, and really only the Galaxy S in the UK can do that.
Frankly though, as a phone for the every day person, the iphone is so utterly superior - I wouldn't give my dad a Galaxy S, but I would give him an iphone. I dont think he could be bothered to flash firmwares manually or do NAND fixes or ROM upgrades. He just wants it to work straight away. However, its this "basicness" that put me off the iphone in the end. With some work, in my view, you can end up with a phone OS with Android that far surpasses any iphone in terms of sheer power and flexibility.
Each to their own though.

And a single official firmware upgrade rumored to come next week can change all that. It's way too soon to draw conclusions like that.
Best advice right now for "the everyday person" is to keep their money in their pocket for a little while longer since neither phones are working like they should.

Theres a difference between the SGS and the iPhone, SGS bars drop, but as a video out there on youtube shows, the download speed remains the same, even when going from 4 bars to 1 bar.

Confirmed GPS Fix

Switched to a Nokia N8...works like a charm.
Where can I download the Nokia N8?
you might as well have gotten a iphone 4
the only upgrade you got was a 12 megapixel
but you lost at least 320mhz (520mhz OC)
and the android market
because that it a Symbian device
to me you downgraded
the only phone better then the vibrant is the G2 (vibrant has a better screen)
fyi, putting a custom rom on the phone fixes the gps
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_N8
And yet you are trolling in the vibrant forums.... Your navigation is still off.
/irony
JK6 fixed the GPS. N8 is a crap phone also.
FYI, I still have the Vibrant and didn't get rid of it. But thanks for the education on which phone is better. I am well aware of the specs, and if you have time some day, I can explain to you why the 320Mhz comparison is a very lame way to compare specs. I am quite happy with the N8, as I am with my Vibrant, but the comment was just a quik poke at the Vibrant, even though it is a very capable phone. With all the people out complaining about the functioning of certain aspects of the phone, I thought it would be funny to take a quick jab at it. I didn't realize, however, that some may see the phone as a spiritual entity; one which is not to be mocked. Me, I just use my phones for, well, phone stuff. And, if you are claiming I downgraded with my purchase, that is pretty slick how you know exactly what I need in a phone and maybe I should consult you next time I make any purchase. Clearly, there is no better choice than the Vibrant for anyone...everyone knows this...
I will say that Android is much easier to use and better designed than Symbian, but of course, you all knew I just got the crap N8 for the camera...
I was playing around with N8 a couple of weeks ago at a cellphone shop. Very nice piece of hardware. If photos/videos are a priority, the n8 rules. The ovi store is still very limited and unfortunately, it looks like its not going anywhere anytime soon. IMHO , Its just their insistance on using symbian that isn't making sense. Now if I nokia would make an android, I would be the first in line. Or maybe if they get a good android port for the n8, i would consider jumping in.
As I agree with you on the "to each his own" & how ppl are a little touchy... What else did you think would happen by making this thread?
Lol, this thread has flame bait written all over it XD
Have fun with your N8, even though everything with Symbian sucks butt. Reason i stayed away from the Omnia Hd awhile back ^^

That N8 is a POS. You may "think" it's GPS is working but everything else (including it's GPS) is broken on the N8. Here are the details:

Nokia makes some rock solid hardware, but it's too bad that symbian is such a pile of fail. I'd rather have the vibrant with its jacked up GPS than suffer with a working GPS on symbian.

Actually, I agree with you. Symbian is not even in the same league as Android...but no one is pretending it is, at least no sane person. The hardware is solid though. I did know this before the purchase and considered it many times over. Not sure I would have traded the Vibrant for the N8, but I kept the Vibrant also. Truly, I like both phones for what they are, and knew about the trade-offs before my purchase. Now, is anyone going to show me how to get Android on this thing or what?

Because I still own the Vibrant and thought I might actually get some intelligent conversation out of poking fun at it. I didn't realize making light of an obvious issue with the device would be taken so personal. Guess I should stay in more, spend more time online, and quit my silly interaction with the outside world. It is ruining my socialization skills.
FYI, the GPS on my N8 is rock solid and works perfectly, but so does the GPS on my Vibrant. My comment was not intended to be taken as a punch at the Vibrant. Yet, it was meant as a whimsical (at least to me) way to mock some of the problems the Vibrant community is facing. Apparently, that wasn't clear to everyone. I am fortunate enough to be able to own both phones, but I thank everyone who so graciously pointed out my mistake.

Yes, that was funny. Really. That was the kind of humor I was trying to bring out.
Seems to be an awful lot of fanboys here, on both sides. Say what you want about Symbian, which sucks to high heaven, but Android is still missing a high end cameraphone. N8 is not a POS, in fact, it's a great piece of hardware with, sadly, probably the worst OS on the market. Gorilla glass, almost SLR quality camera, usb on the go, hdmi out, amoled screen, speaker quality, these are all features not found in most of the androids, even the high end ones.
Design is a matter of personal preference, I love N8's design, whereas I hate the Galaxy S's design.
I believe N8 is a fantastic piece of hardware and, as much as I wanted a great cameraphone, i think I'll go with Galaxy S, a better package overall. Because, in the end, it realy is all about user experience. Steve jobs got it first, others got it recently, but Nokia still doesn't get it.

As a business device symbian easily bests android. The only thing bad about it is the UI. Its very efficient (needs less resources than Android to run Well) and outfeatures nasically every other smartphone os. Its very secure, too.
Nokia is in talks with MS about doing a WP7 device
