hi! all. how can i backup the current stock rom that is installed on my rooted tablet so that if i wish to install custom rom to try & if i don't like it i can still flash back the stock rom.
Obtain a MicroSD card, format and install in your A500 microSD slot. Install Acer Recovery from the Market. In the app, install the new recovery. Say "yes" to backup the existing recovery. Once that finishes, chose the option to reboot into recovery. Once in recovery, chose the "restore and backup" menu, then "backup". The backup will take 5 minutes or so to complete. Chose option to "reboot system". Once Android comes back up, use a file manager app to go to your /mnt/external_sd/clockworkmod/backup and look for a file named "2011-08-08-03.58.40". This translates to the date and time you just did your backup. That's proof that you have a backup file. I would also use Titanium Backup to backup all apps and system files to make getting your new ROM functional easier once you get it flashed.
Once you have this backup, you can flash other ROMS to experiment. If you want to go back to stock, then boot back into recovery as above, or hold down on the volume- button, then push and hold the power button. Release both buttons when script appears in the upper left corner of the "Acer" boot screen. This should bring up the Acer Recovery menu you installed earlier (when you flash a new ROM be sure to reinstall this app). Again, chose the "restore and backup" menu, but this time chose restore. It should bring up your microSD directory and you should see the "2011-08-08-03.58.40" (or whatever date you did your backup). using the volume rocker, chose that file, press the power button, and restore that backup. That should take you back to your stock configuration. You'll probably have to reinstall your widgets though.

when using Titanium Backup, will it backup my games save data?

I had a Nook Color with stock 1.1.0
I downloaded the ClockworkMod Recovery (CWR) SD image, wrote it to my SD card, and booted.
Then from CWR, I did a Nandroid backup.
If I then do a Nandroid restore of this backup, the device will not boot.
The Nandroid restore says it is successful. Then I hold the power button to shut down.
Then I remove the SD card, and power on.
On first boot after the restore it brings up the "install failed" screen.
So if I then shut down and reboot again, it will get to the "n" screen and stay there forever.
What is causing this?
If I forcefully interrupt the boot process 8 times, and then do a n/Home + Power factory reset, only then will it boot.
Thanks
Is there anyone out there who *has* successfully restored a ClockworkMod/nandroid backup of the Nook OS back to the Nook and had it be able to boot up?
I don't run the stock firmware, but if I was a betting man I'd bet you could find the answer here.........

when I do backup ROM, my HTC Tattoo switches off and appears triangle symbol and no backup is created, where is problem? I flashed latest recovery 3.0.2.7 vie ROM manager
backup problem
solved out after wipe data/factory reset in system recovery screen/HOME+END button press, and again downloaded rom manager and flashing clockwork mod , after pressed backup ROM appeared actual recovery screen with backup/restore item. And it is finally possible to backupup actual rom.
Hello, I have a full backup created with ClockWork Mod Recovery, I want to go back to Stock Froyo, would be a problem just to flash the backup again? thanks!
No problem, just do wipe data/cache and wipe dalvik before restoring backup.

make sure you have froyo kernel restored before flashing back to froyo, in case you got defy+ cm9 build on red lens
Actually I created the backup with System Recovery when I was on Froyo, now that I want to go back to it from CM9, I turn off the phone, press volume down + power and it shows me "android system recovery" but I don't see wipe dalvik, just wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition and there is no advanced option to look for dalvik, is this original recovery or clockwork? thanks!
Thats the Motorola Recovery
You need to power up your phone and once you see the blue led blinking press the vol down button
Then go to recovery advanced, there you can also make a nandroid backup
Thanks! Didn't know about that one, however, I can't find any option where to load my nandroid backup, I have my backup on the sdcard root, and the folder structure of the backup is:
goapkrev -> backup -> 'backup date' -> the img files and such
If I go to Custom recovery -> Restore(System and data) or Custom Recovery -> Advanced Restore it says that it does not find any files, but the backup is there, should I change the folder name to another or taking the files out of some of the folders? thanks in advanced!!
EDIT: Got it! I just had to change the folder name from goapkrev to clockworkmod, thanks!

Yes.
Tou have to be rooted and have ClockworkMod recovery installed.
1) Access the recovery mode menu by pressing and holding the Volume Down key and Power button.
2) Go to backup and restore > backup (to save in external SD) OR backup to internal sdcard (to save in internal SD)
3) Wait for the process to finish.
An app is available on the play store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5oM3IzdDFjLm9ubmFuZGJ1cCJd) that can perform a nandroid backup without switching to recovery mode.
In either case, it is mandatory to have a rooted device.
Be aware that the latter method CAN do bakups, but CANNOT perform restores, therefore having a CWM enabled recovery is mandatory, as well.
Will I lose cwm and root if I restore?
Because when you flash something througt odin you lose cwm and root
No, you don't loose anything when you restore with CWM. You loose root and CWM when you flash a firmware with Odin.

Thanks for all
WHY THIS GUIDE?:
As users try out different ROM's, or otherwise back up their devices for the purposes of (if it comes to that) restoring them at a later time, it is important to have a proper backup. A lot of it is common sense, but there is a quirk that is buried in the TWRP thread that if not followed could provide headaches, and a factory reset, in the long run.
BACKGROUND:
As CM 12.1 has been released, I have been trying my hand at building CarbonROM. I had two successful builds at that point, but neither get to to the setup screen (first stuck at "Starting apps", the other, froze at the splash screen). Naturally, I would want to go back to SuperZen using my backup-of-the-day. The first time I restored, the system started up fine, but something funny was happening. I couldn't get the SIM card to detect. Looking around online, I found that the only way around it is to factory reset, then take the time to set everything back up (I didn't TiBu, so that made the process even longer).
After explaining the problem to @TheSSJ, he opened up some more backup options in TWRP so the next time I tried my ROM, I did a little trial-and-error to know which partition was needed to restore and thus what needs to be backed up at least.
THE HOWTO:
First, you need TheSSJ's TWRP v20 or higher. (I never tried this with official TWRP, maybe someone can let me know if it has the same backup options?)
Reboot to TWRP. This can be done a few ways:
From ADB shell or Terminal Emulator, gain SU and type "reboot recovery" (without the quotes).
Select Reboot form the power menu. When the screen goes black, hold down Vol-Up until you get to fastboot mode. From there, press Vol-Dn twice (until "Recovery" is displayed), and press the Power button.
Use an app or Xposed module to do this for you.
Once in TWRP, select Backup. You will be presented with nine or so backup options:
Boot
Cache
config
Data
Misc
Recovery
Splashscreen
System
System Image
A minimal, effective backup should consist of:
Boot
config
Data
System
...but you can select as many partitions as you like. Cache is a good idea as well, and is typical in a backup. Remember, when you restore, you can pick and choose which partitions you want.
Personally, I back up everything but System Image and restore all of what was backed up except recovery.
Set the Backup Name, to something friendly (if desired) and change the backup destination to MicroSD (hope you got one, especially if you have one of the 16GB models).
When ready, swipe to backup. That's all there is to it!
CREDITS:
I would like to thank TheSSJ for all his hard work bringing over TWRP to our device and troubleshooting when things don't work as expected.
