Just wanted to confirm -- is this the most reliable ("best") wpa_supplicant available that supports adhoc?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12858786&postcount=1
I need to be able to tether off of my Droid X (running CM7) and currently this works, but it's a bit unstable and finicky.
Pointers to a better wpa_supplicant for A500 3.1 that supports adhoc are appreciated.
Thanks!
Hey man,
sorry but i cannot agreed with all those help request in development forum, there is Q&A sub forum for the purpose.
Moved.
I've been using that wpa_supplicant since about the day it came out, haven't had any issues tethering to my OG Droid (with Peter Alfonso's Gingerbread + market Wireless Tether app) other than when I take one of the two devices too far away from the other they don't reconnect automatically, which requires only a quick manual reconnection.

This is for the Noob's who might be getting confused in the tethering threads
I keep reading several threads regarding "Ad-Hoc Working" or "tethering with infrastructure" And i'd like to point out the possibly not so obvious for some.
While WiFi Tether previous did either ad-hoc (2.0.5 pre-11) or infrastructure (many versions), the latest and greatest version of WiFi Tether is awsome and does both types and then some.
You can choose your device profile ( 17 specific phone's and a generic)
You can choose the network type (Ad-Hoc or Softap for Samsung, or Auto (which i'm assuming is infrastruture)
The link is here (http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wifi_tether_v3_0-pre14.apk
Easy to setup and easy to use. I hope this helps!
I've tested this with my Samsung Fascinate (Running EC01) tethering to my Tiamat Xoom and my bone Uruk Archos 101
thanks for the info this was a really good update
Any idea why they removed this version? 3.1/3.2 sucks, this is by far the best version I've ever used...
no bluetooth tethering in this version but seems like agood version.
Dear all,
Figured out how to ad-hoc connect via wifi. I guess it is NOT the Xoom's fault. It is the smartphone's fault.
This is according to my observation:
I had both stock non-rooted XOOM and stock rooted 2.2 froyo ATT Captivate.
I was unable to wifi tether because the ATT mobile AP message kept popping up saying that I needed to purchase a tether packed (No thanks).
I preferred the stock experience but finally went back to a custom rom (firefly) for the captivate. After installing the custom rom I can CONFIRM that I can connect via ad-hoc tether wifi via my captivate and Xoom!
I however, have not been able to bluetooth tether.
Anyways, I am returning my XOOM for the Asus transformer because it has the LED backlit screen and besides the $100 less price tag, it is identical.
Stock xoom here and rooted captivate using stock ROM and eXistz KB1 kernel.
I installed wifi teather found here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Had to play around with the settings and set Device Profile to Samsung captivate and setup-method to Softap for Samsung and now i can teather no problems.
Softap for Samsung is actually Infrastructure mode, not Ad-Hoc.
It works fine with wifi tethering on 2.3 roms. No issues on CM7
I have not been able to get this to work.
I have the Wifi Xoom 3.1 Stock ROM
Captivate Rooted with Continuum v4
firmware: 2.2.1
Kernal: 2.6.32.9
buildNumber: FROYO.XWJS8
Any Ideas? Or maybe a step by step guide? I am trying to get the BT Tethering to work.
Thanks,
-Drokare
Yeah I was doing this with my stock Xoom and CM7 Desire HD for ages. The problem was that an unrooted phone sets up an ad-hoc connection whereas in CM7 anyway it behaves as a router AP.
So does that mean I can't get my Xoom to tether to my Captivate via BT?

The Xoom CAN-NOT tether to Ad-hoc without being rooted and changing out the wpa_supplicant file. The Captivate has the ability to tether infrastructure mode (mobile AP isn't ad-hoc.) The wireless tether 3.x (softap) is much more buggy than the 2.x (ad-hoc) on most phones but it might work great on your captivate. If it keeps restarting or getting really hot like it did on mine, you could always root your Xoom and flash the ad-hoc fix in recovery (super easy.)
Here's the link
But that is Wifi Tethering or just setting my Captivate to be a Hot Spot.
I was more specifically asking about the Bluetooth tethering.
Has anyone been able to get this to work? I have seen numerous threads that say they got their Wifi only Xoom to BT tether to Droid X and others.
If I would need to flash my Captivate to another build I would easily. This is the only function I need to for my Xoom and I am completely content.
So I am asking if anyone has got the BT tethering to work... the Wifi Tethering or Hot Spot as you said does heat up the phone quickly, where my friend and his Droid X with BT tethering does not heat up noticeably.
Thanks in advance,
-Drokare
So if I root the Xoom and add the Ad-hoc fix, it would allow me to use the BT Tethering?
Ok so I got wireless tethering to work form my rooted Epic 4g to my galaxy tab 10.1 and its pretty cool. I did it with wireless tethering version 3. The only thing is that at first i couldn't get it to work because of the authentication once I turn off the encryption on my Epic it worked perfectly and connected right away. But what I don't get is why it doesn't work with the password if anyone can give me some advise why this is happening it would be cool, Thanks.
Strange, I tether all the time without issue. Should be possible. Are you using an app or built-in settings for tethering.
I got the app version (V3 is the only one that works) . I mean it works,..just not with the password on.
I use wifi tethering with my samsung galaxy phone with tmobile. you should try changing setting in build in tethering app and see if this works. I use 'quick settings' free app from market for quick access to wifi hotspot settings.
I have this problem too, it tethers fine but whenever it comes to things requiring password (like email logins) it rejects the password.
can any one who doesnt have this problem share which software they use for tethering?
how did you get tethering to work? i have tried the wpa_supplicant hack but the wifi drops every 10 seconds. what rom are you running & what supplicant file did you use?
It only works right with wireless tethering app version 3. Apparently if you have the rom that has it built in you shouldnt have any problems.
This is what i used http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I use bluetooth tethering fron my Win Mobile Treo Pro running wmwifirouter. I got tired of trying to root and do the wpa supplicant thing. Android needs to support adhoc wifi out the box across the board. So ridiculous really by now.
Still Cannot Tether
Ok...so Im still on an older phone ( Droid Eris ) but it's rooted running Gingerbread and the wireless tether v.2.07 works great with my laptop but wont work at all with the Galaxy Tab? I really don't understand this. I have tried everything from leaving it completely open to setting up all the appropriate authentication and access control. I tried the link in the thread for 3.0 and even select the Desire..which I think is the basis of the rom I am on...and just got errors in the log.
Anyone else having these issues? Not sure why it works fine on the laptop but not the tablet?
thanks
I am running v 2.0.7 on a myTouch. When I wireless tether with access control on I can check Gmail, but browser will not get websites. If I turn off AC, then browser works OK.

I think that 2.07 is ad-hoc only and honeycomb doesn't support ad-hoc. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). There are a few threads around here somewhere where you can replace/edit a file that allows ad-hoc support. As to your other question, I use Wifi tether-pre11 and it works without issue. I'll link it to you. Make sure you change "device profile" under settings in the app to correspond with your device. I had troubles with the app until I set the device profile to my device. Depending upon your luck, you may have to try a few different pre-release files on wifi tether 3.0 to find the right one. Like I said, pre11 works great for my Epic, but your device may be different. Just don't use the top one (test2) as I recall seeing that its meant for Samsung devices.

Have an epic and I'm running 3.0 pre11 and I can use encryption. Its under deprecated downloads in the google code page. See above link.

i am actually tethering thru my epic to post this. The wifi tether is screwy for our phones. I use SFR1.2 and geno1.1final. 3g works, 4g causes a instant reboot on the phone, but it works in infrastructer mode without issue.

Can you post those APK's or the instruction please, I have an Epic as well.
I use wifi tether to connect my thunderbolt to my gt10.1. With version 3 I have it set to softap (master) not ad hoc. Access control is on and I have the routing fix box checked for htc phones. I tethered well over 1gb this morning with no problems

Check the android development section of the epic section.. SFR1.2 is the rom, Genocide 1.1final is the kernel. They include wifi tether that works for the epic in the rom..

Ok..finally followed the guide here and replaced my wpa_supplicant using the links provided. I have wireless tether v3.0pre14 working with no authentication. I am now going to play with authentication and may back down to pre11 since you had good luck with it. I am surfing solid with no drops...video streaming is fairly slow but thats to be expected I would assume. I am running rooted 10.1 retail 32MB with Verizon Droid Eris rooted running GB 2.3.3.
Many THANKS for the help!
Just to add a data point, I hadn't tried tethering my Tab to my Thunderbolt until I read this thread. I am running Wireless Tether 2.08pre. I set up access control and also enabled wifi encryption. I used it for about 20 minutes without any problems. That includes email, surfing the internet, and YouTube.
I too can tether the GT 10.1 with my HTC Thunderbolt using Wifi Tether, but am having trouble with the Samsung Droid Charge. Anybody get the Charge to tether successfully? TIA!
I'm trying to tether from my Droid Charge using Open Wifi Network and Barnacles apps. Both work fine with my W7 pc, I cannot just fine. But, my tablet is not recognizing the ssid when I try from either two apps.
What can I do?
I think those apps set up an ad-hoc network, and most mobile devices aren't. Compatible with ad-hoc networks

some one tell me how overcome this ad hoc issue...got a new galaxy tab 10.1 and unable to connect it to net
I have the latest beta of Wireless Tether on my Charge and have no problem tethering my GTab 10.1 to it. It wasn't available in the market, though; had to get it from the project code site.
None of the market tethering apps worked for me due to the inability of the GTab to do ad-hoc. If you want detailed settings that I'm using on the charge, let me know. It was pretty easy to get going, though.

I've had great success with the 2.0.8 version on my Fascinate. I have not had the need to try the later versions.
I haven't been able to get my GTab 10.1 to recognize my Fascinate when using the Wi-Fi Tether app. I'm running the latest MIUI Gingerbread and I've tried the built-in tether app as well, but my tab doesn't see it. Anybody that can help would be greatly appreciated!
Follow this guide to get adhoc working on the tab. http://www.androidsim.net/2011/08/how-to-35-connecting-to-adhoc-networks.html
that guide above works... which is the same as the one in the 10.1v section

I am using HTC Magic (Rogers) as the host...
Man... I've tried this multiple times and I just can't seem to get it to work. Will keep trying, but I'm getting frustrated. Thanks for y'alls help so far though!
UPDATE: I got it working on my 3rd try! I was using the Portable Wireless Tether that comes built in to the MIUI ROM and apparently it wasn't playing nice. However, Barnacle tether worked like a charm. Thanks for all your helpful links guys!
About to buy an OG Droid. Does Wireless Tether for Root Users support correct hotspot functionality (not simple ad-hoc) for multiple devices including Nintendo DS/3DS? Sorry if this is a very redundant question, I have been out of the OG Droid loop for a long time since I originally had one.
Thanks
