I've found several threads on the subject of Tethering a Xoom via BT and Wifi but I'm not having much luck and there's a lot of confusion about providers/Xoom versions/phones, etc. so rather than tag on to a thread I hope it's ok to start a new one.
I have the following:
Wifi Xoom (NOT the Verizon version, the one that just came out on March 27th here in the US)
HTC Hero GSM - completely unlocked (purchased in Europe). Running Android 2.1 standard update from HTC. I'm using the AT&T data plan but device is not an AT&T device at all.
I would like to see if I can Tether the Xoom to the phone and use the data connection I have on it. I understand that the Xoom's chipset doesn't allow for Ad-hoc networks. I've tried to do a Wifi Tether and although that works from my Laptop to my Phone the Xoom doesn't see the ad-hoc network. I don't believe there is any way for me to make the Wifi Tether work in Infrastructure mode so I don't think there is an option there (unless the Xoom can be modified somehow to see Ad-hoc).
So now I'm trying to use Bluetooth Tethering. I've tried both PdaNet and Wifi Tether (v2.0.7 and phone rooted via SuperOneClick). Both seem to start up fine and are running. I then pair the two devices but as many others have reported, I don't see any Tethering options on the Xoom so I'm stuck.
I've tried different orders of things... run Wifi Tether, pair, vs. pair then Wifi Tether, work with Airplane mode on vs. off, Wifi on vs. off, etc. but I never see that Tether option show up.
Anyone have this working with an HTC Hero GSM by any chance? Note that this is the Wifi-Only Xoom which seems to have different features than the Verizon 3G Xoom. Could it be that the Hero itself doesn't support this profile? Or can the Xoom be modified to force it to think the device is tetherable.
I'm not sure if rooting the Xoom would help any or maybe flashing a custom ROM like CM7 on the Hero would help any. I'd prefer not to have to do this but if someone has this working with my exact configuration I'd give it a try.
Any help would be appreciated.
From what i know, most tethering tech /apps are establishing a ad-hoc network' which the xoom isnt capable of...
I too have the Xoom wifi only version with a HTC rooted CDMA Hero.
As everyone knows now the Ad hoc will not tether with the Xoom infrastructure as of the latest.
I too get full bluetooth tethering signal from Wireless Tether, but like you the Xoom will "pair but not connect". As you, I am confused as to whether it is the Hero or the Xoom Wifi which will not connect to the bluetooth tether.
I suspect it is the Xoom Wifi, but would also like a definitive answer and better yet a viable solution.
I have no issue tethering my Xoom (Wifi model) with my Verizon Motorola Droid (1 Gen) over Bluetooth.
My Droid is full rooted with custom Gingerbread ROM (2.3.3) and Overclocked Kernel from ChevyNo1. His kernels are everything enable such as tethering and VPN. This might be the difference for some.
The one annoying thing is that everytime I enable the hotspot on my Droid, I have to go into the Xoom settings and enable tethering on the connection to my Droid. This also has to be done if either device goes not a range and brought back. I am trying to find a widget or a Tasker script to auto enable this.
Be sure to already start the wifi tether program on your phone (selecting the blutooth option on it) then bring up the blutooth settings menu on your xoom, just press and hold the little wrench you see to the right of your phone icon. it should bring up the tether option...just press that and you should see it conect via blutooth.
Just be sure to have the wifi tether app on your phone already on and set for blutooth. This works for me everytime (running the atrix) and shoujkd also work for your phone too.
Still no luck on my side with the Tethering on while I do the pairing and/or when I touch the wrench icon.
I'd like to understand more about how the Bluetooth profile is detected. Does my phone have to publish out a certain profile? Or does the Xoom have a list of device types that it knows are tetherable? I've read on another forum that it seemed like Motorola devices like the Droid worked whereas HTCs didn't seem to. I'm wondering if the Xoom detects the type of phone it's connecting to and decides whether it's tetherable or not... Anyone know? If this is the case maybe there's some file that can be tweaked on the Xoom to include additional devices or change the phone to broadcast out a different device name, etc. Maybe I should try changing my device name to 'Droid' or something.
Just guessing at this point....
I had the same issue with my droid, bluetooth tether is a pretty good alternative. I made a video of it, works with most phones with that create the Ad-Hoc. Check out video below to see the easy steps involved. Root on phone required.
Thanks for posting the video. This is exactly what I tried but does not work with my HTC Hero and my Wifi Xoom. I'm going to see if I rename my Bluetooth device name to 'Droid' to see if that makes any difference. I doubt it....

I ran into a little bug, and it wouldn't recognize my droid. I had to unpair and turn on the bluetooth tether app. Then pair. The xoom then recognized the bluetooth tether. Hopefully this works, I apologize if it doesn't.
My wifi Xoom works perfectly paired with a CM7 Nexus One.
App: wireless tether
pd: key is the wrench
I tried renaming the bluetooth device name to 'Droid' but that didn't make a difference. I'm sure I'm following the same steps as in the video. Somehow the Xoom doesn't see the Hero as a Tetherable device...
Maybe there are some differences in Bluetooth chipsets?
Wifi tethering works with the Desire Z or the G2
I assume the network it creates is not an ad-hoc otherwise the xoom wouldn't have recognized it?
It's either not ad-hoc or you're using Bluetooth. You'd have to explicitly choose Bluetooth tethering in the Wireless Tether app so I assume you're using Wifi.
From what I understand some phones (the ones that are meant to be used as wifi hotspots) do broadcast in infrastructure mode rather than ad-hoc so I assume that's why it works for you.
Also of note is that Honeycomb only supports PAN tethering, and not DUN tethering.
Your phone also has to have "bluetooth tethering" turned on (however you do it, I don't have an android phone) so that the Xoom can discover the PAN bluetooth service.
Interesting. Something to read up more on. I'm using Wireless Tether to do the Bluetooth tethering but maybe I need something additional switched on. At least it's another direction to look at....
Seems like someone figured out how to get the Xoom to listen to Ad-hoc networks but that needs the Xoom rooted so I'll also research that. I prefer Bluetooth tethering since it uses less juice on the phone....
It does seem that "Wireless Tether" which is what I'm using on my HTC Hero, is running in PAN mode. If I look at the app's directory it has a pand executable, etc. and when I'm running the tether it is running pand in the process list.
Still, if I pair, even while it's running pand the Xoom still doesn't recognize it as tetherable. Grrr.... Wish I had another bluetooth client I could try to connect to see if it's the phone or the Xoom but I don't have anything else.
I'm wondering if it's because I have the Android 2.1 update for my Hero. Wireless Tether seems to support the 1.5 version of the Hero but doesn't mention 2.1. Maybe there is an incompatibility there...
Anyway, will continue to try to figure it out.
Rosso, your not on your own, I am still trying to figure this out on my hero running froydvillian. I have done the wifi ad hoc mod and thats working for me but BT tethering woudl be better, I will let you know If i ever find a solution.
I did see someone else loaded CM7 for the hero and then BT tether worked, but CM7 seems to have been pulled for the hero at the moment due to stability issues.
I have a droid eris (verizon's cdma hero) and I have the same exact problems but I'm on cm7and using wireless tether. I can get the to devices and connect via tethering but 5 seconds after that my phone reboots.
Just picked up a wifi-Xoom for my wife over the weekend. Tried to get it connected to my phone (HD2) as a wifi hotspot and was having problems (the ad-hoc problem). The xoom wouldn't even see the hotspot. I am running AmeriCanDroid 0413 build and it has wifi tether v. 3.0-pre11. So I switched back to winmo and still nothing, then I tried going to Darkstone SuperRam 1.5 (my fallback build). It has an older version of wifi tether, I think 2.06 or something like that and got the xoom to connect. I haven't had a lot of time to fool around with it, but it was able to get a network connection. Maybe you could try an older version of the wifi tether? I haven't experimented with the BT tethering yet. I don't want to root the xoom yet, maybe when my wife is tired of it.
/edit
Just checked the wifi-tether website and there is a new version of wifi tether and it supports softap which may help the xoom recognize the wifi hotspot.
Hi, I have just managed to get my hero bluetooth tethered to my htc hero.
The process I followed was basically what everyone has said:-
download wireless tether i am using 2.0.7
1. start bluetooth on phone and xoom (make discoverable)
2. Do not pair the devices yet
3. start up wireless tether, select bluetooth and tap to start the actual service
4. go back to bluetooth on your xoom and pair the devices
I then got an icon I had not had before and when I tapped the wrench I got the option to tether.
As for wifi tether your phone needs to put out infrastructure wifi for the xoom to see it, if its ad-hoc, you'll need to do the wifi mod so that he xoom sees adhoc
although as stated the new version of 'wifi tether' (which just seems to be the new name for the 'wireless tether' app) may fix that? but doesn't seem to support bluetooth as the 2.07 version does
Ok so I got wireless tethering to work form my rooted Epic 4g to my galaxy tab 10.1 and its pretty cool. I did it with wireless tethering version 3. The only thing is that at first i couldn't get it to work because of the authentication once I turn off the encryption on my Epic it worked perfectly and connected right away. But what I don't get is why it doesn't work with the password if anyone can give me some advise why this is happening it would be cool, Thanks.
Strange, I tether all the time without issue. Should be possible. Are you using an app or built-in settings for tethering.
I got the app version (V3 is the only one that works) . I mean it works,..just not with the password on.
I use wifi tethering with my samsung galaxy phone with tmobile. you should try changing setting in build in tethering app and see if this works. I use 'quick settings' free app from market for quick access to wifi hotspot settings.
I have this problem too, it tethers fine but whenever it comes to things requiring password (like email logins) it rejects the password.
can any one who doesnt have this problem share which software they use for tethering?
how did you get tethering to work? i have tried the wpa_supplicant hack but the wifi drops every 10 seconds. what rom are you running & what supplicant file did you use?
It only works right with wireless tethering app version 3. Apparently if you have the rom that has it built in you shouldnt have any problems.
This is what i used http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I use bluetooth tethering fron my Win Mobile Treo Pro running wmwifirouter. I got tired of trying to root and do the wpa supplicant thing. Android needs to support adhoc wifi out the box across the board. So ridiculous really by now.
Still Cannot Tether
Ok...so Im still on an older phone ( Droid Eris ) but it's rooted running Gingerbread and the wireless tether v.2.07 works great with my laptop but wont work at all with the Galaxy Tab? I really don't understand this. I have tried everything from leaving it completely open to setting up all the appropriate authentication and access control. I tried the link in the thread for 3.0 and even select the Desire..which I think is the basis of the rom I am on...and just got errors in the log.
Anyone else having these issues? Not sure why it works fine on the laptop but not the tablet?
thanks
I am running v 2.0.7 on a myTouch. When I wireless tether with access control on I can check Gmail, but browser will not get websites. If I turn off AC, then browser works OK.

I think that 2.07 is ad-hoc only and honeycomb doesn't support ad-hoc. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). There are a few threads around here somewhere where you can replace/edit a file that allows ad-hoc support. As to your other question, I use Wifi tether-pre11 and it works without issue. I'll link it to you. Make sure you change "device profile" under settings in the app to correspond with your device. I had troubles with the app until I set the device profile to my device. Depending upon your luck, you may have to try a few different pre-release files on wifi tether 3.0 to find the right one. Like I said, pre11 works great for my Epic, but your device may be different. Just don't use the top one (test2) as I recall seeing that its meant for Samsung devices.

i am actually tethering thru my epic to post this. The wifi tether is screwy for our phones. I use SFR1.2 and geno1.1final. 3g works, 4g causes a instant reboot on the phone, but it works in infrastructer mode without issue.

Can you post those APK's or the instruction please, I have an Epic as well.
I use wifi tether to connect my thunderbolt to my gt10.1. With version 3 I have it set to softap (master) not ad hoc. Access control is on and I have the routing fix box checked for htc phones. I tethered well over 1gb this morning with no problems
Sent from my Thunderbolt using Tapatalk
Check the android development section of the epic section.. SFR1.2 is the rom, Genocide 1.1final is the kernel. They include wifi tether that works for the epic in the rom..

Ok..finally followed the guide here and replaced my wpa_supplicant using the links provided. I have wireless tether v3.0pre14 working with no authentication. I am now going to play with authentication and may back down to pre11 since you had good luck with it. I am surfing solid with no drops...video streaming is fairly slow but thats to be expected I would assume. I am running rooted 10.1 retail 32MB with Verizon Droid Eris rooted running GB 2.3.3.
Many THANKS for the help!
Just to add a data point, I hadn't tried tethering my Tab to my Thunderbolt until I read this thread. I am running Wireless Tether 2.08pre. I set up access control and also enabled wifi encryption. I used it for about 20 minutes without any problems. That includes email, surfing the internet, and YouTube.
I too can tether the GT 10.1 with my HTC Thunderbolt using Wifi Tether, but am having trouble with the Samsung Droid Charge. Anybody get the Charge to tether successfully? TIA!
Hello, I have been a member of XDA for quite some time but always used it as a resource. I usually always found an answer to my issues and did not need to post...............until I got the fascinate. So I tried the various Tether methods and the only one that has seemed to work for me is the "Easy Tether" method. I am listing all methods and the results I had to keep others from having these issues:
ROM: CM7
Method 1: Barnacle
Mode: Adhoc (Using Samsung Facinate profile)
Result: no connection, being assigned private IP in the 169.254 subnet
Method 2: Built in wireless tether in CM7
mode: Infrastructure
Result: Getting connected but no Internet connection
Method 3: Easy Tether
mode: USB
Result: Success. Followed on screen instructions and worked flawlessly.
Method 4: Wi-Fi tether (from android market)
mode: infrastructure
Result: Getting connected but no Internet connection
Please provide your experiences and we can keep a proper log organized by ROM versions being used.

running JT's latest CM7 (no nightlies) I got barnacle to tether just fine.. EB01 radio, glitch kernel
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta2.apk
avoid the Market - This tethers infrastructure mode to Nook color, laptop, etc.
Need to change device profile and setup method in Settings to match the Fascinate. works great on Comrom 2.1 and DInc Pure Speed.

Just set this up on the wife's fassy running rooted stock. Works great to tether her Transformer. I'm not having as good of luck with it on CM7, but haven't mucked about in the newest version much yet.

Worked for me also... same config
Vanilla Gingerbread has it built in the rom no app needed . Both tethering and wifi hotspot.
good day.
have no problems running either Barnacle or Wireless Tether apps. Have used both apps on both 2.1 and 2.2, but running stock rom.
what chipset are you running on your computer that you are tethering with? I was unable to get a connection with anything other than wifi tether pre14.
I have the N6200 wifi chipset and can't get any adhoc connection to work.

N6200... Intel, according to a quick Google search. Try updating your wireless adapter's drivers, at least some of them had massive issues with adhoc mode. I ran into that issue when I first tried to tether, and even now I only have unreliable adhoc (Intel apparently didn't bother to test adhoc mode at all!).
Verizon is working hard to keep the fascinate (and other phones) from tethering using apps, instead making you tether through their built in, allowing them to charge you for it. In my experience however, once you've rooted your phone and flashed a new rom, barnacle usually works well. I've had to uninstall and reinstall a couple of times, but other than that, it's cake.
Hello I have in my rom Iconia A500 THOR V14.2 ANDROID ROM 3.2.1 works fine, I used wifi tethering with my tel. rom htc hd2 and HD2_NDT_GINGER_2.3.7_CM7.2_BASED_V35.0_MAGLDR and earlier and this too well, but with great battery consumption at tel. So PdaNet tablet discovered by BT to connect both perfect and very good speed and low power consumption.
The problem is that I tried to do the same with other rom in the Tel and nofunciona with any other, in some Wifi if I managed to connect but bt nowhere.
I can not access this configuration to the proxy and the true sense of megustan the HTC rom and now I can not use them for this.
I have read also in San Google and forums and I think it has something to do DHCP choking in Iconium.
Would greatly appreciate help in resolving this problem.
I'm not completely sure I understood you correctly, but here's what I think might help you:
Bluetooth is somewhat broken on this tab. I don't know if BT tethering works on any ROM... I never actually searched for it and it's not in the settings.
WiFi Tethering works just fine with most ROMs; Acer removed the menu entry, but not the necessary software, i. e. any "WiFi tethering widget" will work if you've got root. I'm not sure about non-rooted devices, though, as I rooted mine like 10 minutes after I got it... Also, most custom ROMs (even almost-stock ones) restore the menu entry, so you don't even need that.
EDIT: After re-reading your post I think the problem might just as well be with the kernel you use... Its source is (in violation of the GPL) not available, so I can't be sure of that.
So, this seems to be a rather unique position i'm in. The nexus 7 not having adhoc support seems to be a pretty common thread, and the only solution I seem to be finding is to use FoxFi on the hotspot phone. I'm assuming this is because FoxFi doesn't broadcast the hotspot as an Adhoc connection?
There is also the fix to change the settings on the more standard Wifi Tether for root users app. My Motorola Dext is too old and crappy to actually have any settings. I can use WEXT (ad-hoc) only for the setup method, which obviously isn't going to work if I want to connect with my N7.
Anyway, I thought I'd try the foxfi thing so I could actually play Ingress outside of my home in this backwoods rural area, HOWEVER, my Motorola Dext (Canadian, on Bell's network if that means anything), mb200, is, again, far too crappy to have FoxFi support. I tweaked and tinkered for ages but still it fails to activate the wifi hotspot.
I'm curious about the wpa_supplicant "fix". I haven't found any thread that gives me any confidence is downloading and tweaking my system files yet, but i've heard some ROM's might have fixed it. I'm on Cyanogen nightlies, does anyone know of a rom that fixes it, or can lead me to some knowledge on tweaking the wpa_supplicant file myself
basically, I've been finding a whole bunch of "maybe this will work", "Try this - no response" threads, and nothing that takes you from step one to solution. I'd like to find a solution
Thanks!
