Hello, I have been a member of XDA for quite some time but always used it as a resource. I usually always found an answer to my issues and did not need to post...............until I got the fascinate. So I tried the various Tether methods and the only one that has seemed to work for me is the "Easy Tether" method. I am listing all methods and the results I had to keep others from having these issues:
ROM: CM7
Method 1: Barnacle
Mode: Adhoc (Using Samsung Facinate profile)
Result: no connection, being assigned private IP in the 169.254 subnet
Method 2: Built in wireless tether in CM7
mode: Infrastructure
Result: Getting connected but no Internet connection
Method 3: Easy Tether
mode: USB
Result: Success. Followed on screen instructions and worked flawlessly.
Method 4: Wi-Fi tether (from android market)
mode: infrastructure
Result: Getting connected but no Internet connection
Please provide your experiences and we can keep a proper log organized by ROM versions being used.

running JT's latest CM7 (no nightlies) I got barnacle to tether just fine.. EB01 radio, glitch kernel
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta2.apk
avoid the Market - This tethers infrastructure mode to Nook color, laptop, etc.
Need to change device profile and setup method in Settings to match the Fascinate. works great on Comrom 2.1 and DInc Pure Speed.

Just set this up on the wife's fassy running rooted stock. Works great to tether her Transformer. I'm not having as good of luck with it on CM7, but haven't mucked about in the newest version much yet.

Worked for me also... same config
Vanilla Gingerbread has it built in the rom no app needed . Both tethering and wifi hotspot.
good day.
have no problems running either Barnacle or Wireless Tether apps. Have used both apps on both 2.1 and 2.2, but running stock rom.
what chipset are you running on your computer that you are tethering with? I was unable to get a connection with anything other than wifi tether pre14.
I have the N6200 wifi chipset and can't get any adhoc connection to work.

N6200... Intel, according to a quick Google search. Try updating your wireless adapter's drivers, at least some of them had massive issues with adhoc mode. I ran into that issue when I first tried to tether, and even now I only have unreliable adhoc (Intel apparently didn't bother to test adhoc mode at all!).
Verizon is working hard to keep the fascinate (and other phones) from tethering using apps, instead making you tether through their built in, allowing them to charge you for it. In my experience however, once you've rooted your phone and flashed a new rom, barnacle usually works well. I've had to uninstall and reinstall a couple of times, but other than that, it's cake.

Updated my stock 2.1 DX today with new 2.2, rooted, loaded titanium backup, cleaned up some bloat and loaded wireless tether. All is good, the phone works great! Went to use wifi tether and hooks up great to laptop with full signal, but here the kicker, tether doesnt connect to 3g, so no internet. Any idea's?
Are you using the 3G mobile hotspot or a Tethering App from the market or something
I'm running Wireless Tether for Root Users 2.0.5-pre9.
I'm having the same problem. running the same version of wireless tether. I didn't remove any bloatware or anything, I just have the apps hidden using launcher pro, so basically stock. Worked fine before update.

I didn't know they had a DX working version, it doesn't show in their website. Is it ad-hoc or real wifi hotspot?
2.2 messes withe the settings. Try Barnacle. There is a extra setting it has for 2.2.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
do you have access control enabled?
Yep I changed the access setting and no go. Then I removed it and loaded barnacle and had the same issue.
Barnacle worked for me on 2.1 but not on 2.2. What is this "setting for 2.2" that makes barnacle work?
Wireless Tether for Root (by Muller) works for me on 2.2. But the connection is very much hit and miss. I end up using Easy Tether (usb) 90% of the time. I wish I could find a way to keep the connection more stable. Bc wireless is just easier.
I seem to remember having to do something with my connection settings on my computer a long time ago to enable ad-hoc connections when I first started tethering on WinMo with the HTC tether. Sorry I can't remember now.
Having the same issue here with Barnacle after 2.2 update. =(
I just rooted my DX 2.2 and I'm using Wireless tether version 2.0.2 I downloaded this morning from the market and I'm using my iPad and laptop off of it right now. But barnacle isn't working for me tho.
I notice a lot of people are having issues. I'm not (on leaked 2.3.15) but I am on an older version... 2.0.2
I should be more clear, I'm on the ota release of 2.2 with the 2.0.2 version of wireless tether.
DL OTA, rooted with Droid 2, installed Koush Clockwork and Recovery, then installed Free Wifi Tether. Ran Speedtest at 1.1 M download. I'd say NPs here. Just my 2 cents
Used Barnacle with 2.1... up'd to the leaked 2.2 and Barnacle stopped working. Wireless Tether (from the market) works fine, but not if I'm using Access Controls (which seems to be the general state of that app right now).
I know I'm awfully late to the game, but if I root and tether like you guys are, Verizon can't tell? I won't get the extra charge for tether service? Sorry for the noob question.
Dear all,
Figured out how to ad-hoc connect via wifi. I guess it is NOT the Xoom's fault. It is the smartphone's fault.
This is according to my observation:
I had both stock non-rooted XOOM and stock rooted 2.2 froyo ATT Captivate.
I was unable to wifi tether because the ATT mobile AP message kept popping up saying that I needed to purchase a tether packed (No thanks).
I preferred the stock experience but finally went back to a custom rom (firefly) for the captivate. After installing the custom rom I can CONFIRM that I can connect via ad-hoc tether wifi via my captivate and Xoom!
I however, have not been able to bluetooth tether.
Anyways, I am returning my XOOM for the Asus transformer because it has the LED backlit screen and besides the $100 less price tag, it is identical.
Stock xoom here and rooted captivate using stock ROM and eXistz KB1 kernel.
I installed wifi teather found here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Had to play around with the settings and set Device Profile to Samsung captivate and setup-method to Softap for Samsung and now i can teather no problems.
Softap for Samsung is actually Infrastructure mode, not Ad-Hoc.
It works fine with wifi tethering on 2.3 roms. No issues on CM7
I have not been able to get this to work.
I have the Wifi Xoom 3.1 Stock ROM
Captivate Rooted with Continuum v4
firmware: 2.2.1
Kernal: 2.6.32.9
buildNumber: FROYO.XWJS8
Any Ideas? Or maybe a step by step guide? I am trying to get the BT Tethering to work.
Thanks,
-Drokare
Yeah I was doing this with my stock Xoom and CM7 Desire HD for ages. The problem was that an unrooted phone sets up an ad-hoc connection whereas in CM7 anyway it behaves as a router AP.
So does that mean I can't get my Xoom to tether to my Captivate via BT?

+1
The Xoom CAN-NOT tether to Ad-hoc without being rooted and changing out the wpa_supplicant file. The Captivate has the ability to tether infrastructure mode (mobile AP isn't ad-hoc.) The wireless tether 3.x (softap) is much more buggy than the 2.x (ad-hoc) on most phones but it might work great on your captivate. If it keeps restarting or getting really hot like it did on mine, you could always root your Xoom and flash the ad-hoc fix in recovery (super easy.)
Here's the link
But that is Wifi Tethering or just setting my Captivate to be a Hot Spot.
I was more specifically asking about the Bluetooth tethering.
Has anyone been able to get this to work? I have seen numerous threads that say they got their Wifi only Xoom to BT tether to Droid X and others.
If I would need to flash my Captivate to another build I would easily. This is the only function I need to for my Xoom and I am completely content.
So I am asking if anyone has got the BT tethering to work... the Wifi Tethering or Hot Spot as you said does heat up the phone quickly, where my friend and his Droid X with BT tethering does not heat up noticeably.
Thanks in advance,
-Drokare
So if I root the Xoom and add the Ad-hoc fix, it would allow me to use the BT Tethering?
Has anyone experienced issues with Wireless Tether on Community Rom 1.2. I am able to start the app and get an IP address out of DHCP but I am unable to get access to the internet. I have tried several different versions of Wireless Tether but do not seem to be able to get internet access.
Some people have reported issues with running the OTB 1.4 kernel. Some have found that going back to OTB 1.3 corrected the problem. Might look into that.

Short answer is BARNACLE turned my fascination into a squid.... tanked. Hope you had a good nandroid.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I have had some small issues with 1.3, and I tether (didn't really put the two together until seeing this thread), but they're solved with a reboot, and I tethered for hours at a time for weeks with minimal problems with both Root Users and Barnacle. Probably just going to Odin back in order to get the newest radio and clean things up then.
I have not tried BARNACLE I have been using the android-wifi-tether http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/. This has worked great all up to running community ROM. I will double check my kernel and mess with that a bit.
The issue is related to the wpa supplicant configuration. I can enable the supplicant and connect however the wireless app does not tunnel my connection. The reason BARNACLE works is because this app does not support wpa at all.
This is a huge issue because WEP is not secure and can be cracked in just a few minutes.
I gave up on OTB kernels with the com rom. Flashed JT's 4/15 voodoo and the 3.0-14 wifi tether test with infrastructure mode works flawlessly again.
Ok so I got wireless tethering to work form my rooted Epic 4g to my galaxy tab 10.1 and its pretty cool. I did it with wireless tethering version 3. The only thing is that at first i couldn't get it to work because of the authentication once I turn off the encryption on my Epic it worked perfectly and connected right away. But what I don't get is why it doesn't work with the password if anyone can give me some advise why this is happening it would be cool, Thanks.
Strange, I tether all the time without issue. Should be possible. Are you using an app or built-in settings for tethering.
I got the app version (V3 is the only one that works) . I mean it works,..just not with the password on.
I use wifi tethering with my samsung galaxy phone with tmobile. you should try changing setting in build in tethering app and see if this works. I use 'quick settings' free app from market for quick access to wifi hotspot settings.
I have this problem too, it tethers fine but whenever it comes to things requiring password (like email logins) it rejects the password.
can any one who doesnt have this problem share which software they use for tethering?
how did you get tethering to work? i have tried the wpa_supplicant hack but the wifi drops every 10 seconds. what rom are you running & what supplicant file did you use?
It only works right with wireless tethering app version 3. Apparently if you have the rom that has it built in you shouldnt have any problems.
This is what i used http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I use bluetooth tethering fron my Win Mobile Treo Pro running wmwifirouter. I got tired of trying to root and do the wpa supplicant thing. Android needs to support adhoc wifi out the box across the board. So ridiculous really by now.
Still Cannot Tether
Ok...so Im still on an older phone ( Droid Eris ) but it's rooted running Gingerbread and the wireless tether v.2.07 works great with my laptop but wont work at all with the Galaxy Tab? I really don't understand this. I have tried everything from leaving it completely open to setting up all the appropriate authentication and access control. I tried the link in the thread for 3.0 and even select the Desire..which I think is the basis of the rom I am on...and just got errors in the log.
Anyone else having these issues? Not sure why it works fine on the laptop but not the tablet?
thanks
I am running v 2.0.7 on a myTouch. When I wireless tether with access control on I can check Gmail, but browser will not get websites. If I turn off AC, then browser works OK.

I think that 2.07 is ad-hoc only and honeycomb doesn't support ad-hoc. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). There are a few threads around here somewhere where you can replace/edit a file that allows ad-hoc support. As to your other question, I use Wifi tether-pre11 and it works without issue. I'll link it to you. Make sure you change "device profile" under settings in the app to correspond with your device. I had troubles with the app until I set the device profile to my device. Depending upon your luck, you may have to try a few different pre-release files on wifi tether 3.0 to find the right one. Like I said, pre11 works great for my Epic, but your device may be different. Just don't use the top one (test2) as I recall seeing that its meant for Samsung devices.

i am actually tethering thru my epic to post this. The wifi tether is screwy for our phones. I use SFR1.2 and geno1.1final. 3g works, 4g causes a instant reboot on the phone, but it works in infrastructer mode without issue.

Can you post those APK's or the instruction please, I have an Epic as well.
I use wifi tether to connect my thunderbolt to my gt10.1. With version 3 I have it set to softap (master) not ad hoc. Access control is on and I have the routing fix box checked for htc phones. I tethered well over 1gb this morning with no problems

Check the android development section of the epic section.. SFR1.2 is the rom, Genocide 1.1final is the kernel. They include wifi tether that works for the epic in the rom..

Ok..finally followed the guide here and replaced my wpa_supplicant using the links provided. I have wireless tether v3.0pre14 working with no authentication. I am now going to play with authentication and may back down to pre11 since you had good luck with it. I am surfing solid with no drops...video streaming is fairly slow but thats to be expected I would assume. I am running rooted 10.1 retail 32MB with Verizon Droid Eris rooted running GB 2.3.3.
Many THANKS for the help!
Just to add a data point, I hadn't tried tethering my Tab to my Thunderbolt until I read this thread. I am running Wireless Tether 2.08pre. I set up access control and also enabled wifi encryption. I used it for about 20 minutes without any problems. That includes email, surfing the internet, and YouTube.
I too can tether the GT 10.1 with my HTC Thunderbolt using Wifi Tether, but am having trouble with the Samsung Droid Charge. Anybody get the Charge to tether successfully? TIA!
So I'm sure a lot of you had the plan that you just enable wireless tethering on your android phone and connect your kindle fire that way... Well Amazon in their infinite wisdom has disabled that ability. That is pretty much my number 1 need at the moment. I travel a lot and this should have been the first thing amazon added support for since they don't offer a 3G version.
Hopefully with some roms this will be working
As a temporary work-around, certain wifi-tether apps can be setup for infrastructure (rather than ad-hoc) mode. May be worth looking into.
Amazon didn't do it, Android in general doesn't do adhoc. OeMs and users have to patch in Support for it.

No, its the kindle. Try setting up a adhoc wifi from your PC or laptop - the Fire won't see it but phones with e.g. cyanogenmod will. Still trying to find a workaround as I need adhoc wireless from PC/laptop...
I got my kindle to connect to my Captivate running wifi tether 3.1, but it wont actually transmit any data. I use static IP's with my home network on the kindle but that shouldnt impact the infrastructure mode with wifi tether would it?
