Just in case you guys don't check permissions when you update apps, or if you just have your apps set to automatically update, you should be made aware of Facebook app permission changes.
Any version AFTER 1.5.4 now has these permissions:
send SMS messages
Allows application to send SMS messages. Malicious applications may cost you money by sending messages without your confirmation.
receive SMS
Allows application to receive and process SMS messages. Malicious applications may monitor your messages or delete them without showing them to you.
read SMS or MMS
Allows application to read SMS messages stored on your device or SIM card. Malicious applications may read your confidential messages.
edit SMS or MMS
Allows application to write to SMS messages stored on your device or SIM card. Malicious applications may delete your messages.
Source click permissions tab.
For those interested I have provided the Facebook 1.5.4 apk which doesn't have these ridiculous permissions.
Go Google +!
Seriously.
That's ridiculous...

Thanks for the fyi. Just a minor point of clarification, I don't believe auto-updates occur on the market when apps change their permissions. It will prompt for a manual update instead.

WTH does facebook need permission to access text messages for? Look up the Permissions Denied app on the market, it can let you pick and choose what permissions to give an app.

I believe you're correct.
Too many people don't think to check new permissions before installing.
Of course, why would you expect an app like this to want this kind of permission?

How does that make any sense?
Because you can send messages on the Facebook messaging system it should be able to read, edit and even send text and picture mail?
Um, no.
Its the same thing as if the AIM app wanted the same rights.
AIM messaging has nothing to do with my texts.
These are two different types of messaging systems and there's no excuse nor any good reason that this app should be able to send receive or even read my texts/pictexts.
Furthermore, we've been able to use the chat program previous to 1.5.4 and yet back then the app didn't want those permissions.
Gochat doesn't want those permissions.
No excuse.
Fred makes a cracking post on facebook, I want to send it to Jeff, but he's a Luddite who doesn't want anything to do with facebook, but he has a mobile phone, so I forward the post to him via SMS, which of course the facebook app will need access to in order to forward the post.
Jeff then texts me an awesome reply that I want to share with everyone on facebook, so I publish the sms through the facebook app, which again will need permission to access my sms in order to read it and post it online for me.
Does that make sense?

I can share things between apps just fine without them having the ability to read my texts/pictexts and having the ability to send them.

Yet....Tapatalk doesn't need access to my texts.

Is this function inside the facebook app? There must be some reason why facebook would declare such a permission I believe it won't have any ill intentions tho.

Facebook started off like this too, only certain colleges could join then only college students now everyone.
I know some people that are far from "geeks" that are loving Google + more than Facebook.
Now, is it going to take a few years before Google + is a big as Facebook?
Sure, Facebook is 7 years old mind you.

Doing some digging it's probably for the same reason why angry birds had the permissions, in app carrier billing via sms.
Now I can't find any features within the app which would allow that, maybe it can be done via the website so if you make a purchase in a Facebook web app perhaps it will send a sms from your phone to make the payment.
So, rather than start some paranoid ramblings guessing at what it could all be about and how they're going to bankrupt everyone by sending premium rate text messages every second, I thought it'd be an idea to actually ask Facebook, so you never know, we might get an answer.
This may shed some light on the matter

I'm familiar with this option; however, I'm looking for a more "integrated" application (with the OS I mean) such as the one for Blackberry.. I really hope people at Facebook or Microsoft will develop something similar..
That's the ONLY reason I'm hanging onto my blackberry. WinMo's FB app SUCKS. I was just trying this morning different apps which claim they can sync up. So far I haven't found anything that remotely compares to BB's interface. *sigh*
Try this: http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-fim-facebook-instant-messenger.html
It has a mode that integrates with the web, and seems to cache your credentials so that you don't have to manually log on. It does have some ads but it's free.
Oh, and of course it lets you do FB IM messages.

Facebook Apps!
If you do some forum thread searching you will find a couple of interesting items regarding this issue...
1) There is a thread from the writers of the Microsoft Facebook APP, who ARE aware of the limitations of the standard app, and are working on an improved version for WM!
2) There is also a team of equally pi$$ed off WM users who want a decent FB app, that have start writing their own! At present they are assembling a coding team, but SAMPLE images are available and they are making mighty efforts to accomplish what we all want!

A seemingly innocuous Android app that let users change their phone's wallpaper has actually been stealing private user information and may have been downloaded millions of times.
Users should be concerned if they downloaded an app from "Jackeey Wallpaper." While it does perform the functions described in the app download page, it also ends up taking the phone's Internet browser history, mobile phone number, every single text message, and voicemail password. That information is then sent to a website based in Shenzhen, China.

http://phandroid.com/2010/07/29/another-app-stealing-data/
[Update]: MyLookout chimed in with us to clarify some details that other outlets have been reporting. Specifically, the app does collect data from your phone, but only the device’s phone number, subscriber identifier, and voicemail number fields are retrieved. SMS and browsing history are not touched by any of the apps they analyzed throughout their Blackhat conference. Your voicemail’s password is also not transmitted unless you included the password in your phone’s voicemail number field.
We’re not yet certain on what the developer’s intentions are for using the pieces of data it does send to China – so we can’t outright call it malicious – but it is collecting and sending data nevertheless. Hopefully that clears up some of the confusion everyone’s been faced with regarding the read-only property READ_PHONE_STATE that the application uses to access certain pieces of data.

It's not like it doesn't show you the stuff when you install apps.. And this "Genome Project" thing is out of context nonsense.... 14% of free apps have access to your contacts. You realize that includes IM programs, SMS programs, Email programs, etc....
If you install a wallpaper app that requests access to your Accounts and Contacts, well....
http://www.cyrket.com/search?q=Jackeey+Wallpaper
I don't see such permissions on the 2-3 I looked through, but maybe specific ones did.
Another thing about this "lookout" app and Genome Project.. Look at the permissions on their app on the market:
Permissions: ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION , ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION , ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE , CLEAR_APP_CACHE , DISABLE_KEYGUARD , GET_ACCOUNTS , INTERNET , MANAGE_ACCOUNTS , MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS , PERSISTENT_ACTIVITY , READ_CONTACTS , READ_LOGS , READ_OWNER_DATA , READ_PHONE_STATE , READ_SMS , READ_SYNC_SETTINGS , READ_USER_DICTIONARY , RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED , RECEIVE_SMS , VIBRATE , WAKE_LOCK , WRITE_CALENDAR , WRITE_CONTACTS , WRITE_SETTINGS , WRITE_SMS , WRITE_SYNC_SETTINGS , WRITE_USER_DICTIONARY , com.android.browser.permission.READ_HISTORY_BOOKMARKS , com.android.browser.permission.WRITE_HISTORY_BOOKMARKS
What if the 'AV' software itself turns out to be the one stealing data? If anything could, it could.
we get that all apps ask for permission to allow access to our location, contacts, emails etc....but to gather our private info and sell them to China.....thats messed up.
time to sue.
That information is then sent to a website based in Shenzhen, China.

question:
if this app was downloaded and used by US government....would it be considered as a SPY? lol
It's a big deal, but it illustrates very well that android users are in a ffa environment without someone looking over their shoulder to protect them.
It's good and bad. Some people will call bad on google for not protecting them, but others will see it for the truth of it and know they have to cover their own ass.
Wouldnt a functional firewall app work for this?
cutting off apps access to non essential portions of data...but also from data transmitting?

Woaaah now... I have used this app on almost ever ROM I flash - downloaded straight from the market each time. I've never had an indication that my information was compromised in any way... Are you 100% sure that Flixster was the culprit? That's a pretty heavy claim for what I think is a very widely used (and recommended) app.
and what about all the gmail notifiers?
More fears:
I will preface this by saying I don't know much about Android security, but to me, it's as secure as any PC.
So: what about gmail notifier apps and apps that ask for access to your gmail account?
Do they have access to your gmail password? Seems like it. So what's to stop malicious gmail notifier developers from stealing your gmail passwords and having their way with your google account, for example, grepping your mailbox for banking information.
Also think about keyboard apps, what's to top malicious keyboard developers from writing a keyboard which logs all your keystrokes to a zipfile then uploads it to a russian server for analysis of B-A-N-K and P-A-S-S-W-O-R-D and then the next keystrokes which follow that?
It doesn't end there. Picture apps which can steal your pictures. Apps which can record your phone conversations and upload the audio to servers a few hours later so you don't notice that data going on.

The same things are possible for a regular computer as well. You can connect to a site and it could execute a download that then snoops your keystrokes and uploads them somewhere.
The difference (so far) is that on android you have to install an app to do that.
The takehome message is to excersize caution and install apps you can verify where they come from and what they do.
This will happen more and more. Mobile is where people are doing most of there communication and beginning alot of banking.
Not just Android all mobile OS.
Like I said a zonealarm/lilsnitch like app would be of great use. Even if logging or reading they still need to communicate out. An easy low mem/bat/cpu usage app that monitors this behaviour would go along way.
This is becomming a bigger issue and we do need some type of security alert monitor!

Easy to say, but how do you 'verify where they come from and what they do'?
My Twitter died on Timescape after Oauth change... anybody else with the same problem?
Over the coming weeks, we will be making two important updates that will impact how you interact with Twitter applications. We are sending this notice to all Twitter users to make sure you are aware of these changes.
What are applications?
There are over 250,000 applications built using the Twitter API. To use most applications, you first authorize the application to access your Twitter account, after which you can use it to read and post Tweets, discover new users and more. Applications come in many varieties, including desktop applications like TweetDeck, Seesmic, or EchoFon, websites such as TweetMeme, fflick, or Topsy, or mobile applications such as Twitter for iPhone, Twitter for Blackberry, or Foursquare.
Update 1: New authorization rules for applications
Starting August 31, all applications will be required to use “OAuth” to access your Twitter account.
What's OAuth?
OAuth is a technology that enables applications to access Twitter on your behalf with your approval without asking you directly for your password.
Desktop and mobile applications may still ask for your password once, but after that request, they are required to use OAuth in order to access your timeline or allow you to tweet.
What does this mean for me?
Applications are no longer allowed to store your password.
If you change your password, the applications will continue to work.
Some applications you have been using may require you to reauthorize them or may stop functioning at the time of this change.
All applications you have authorized will be listed at http://twitter.com/settings/connections.
You can revoke access to any application at any time from the list.

Titanium Backup (paid version only maybe?) has profiles to load different user data files for an app. You'd have to switch back and forth though. It would probably be easiest to try keeping a web browser logged into Google Voice your second account, setting the user agent to a desktop.
Or just use a second browser app only for this. You won't get instant notifications of incoming texts, but that's about all you can do for now. I don't see Google adding anything like this to the service, honestly.

i think the idea is to have the instant notifications. I too have been looking for a solution to this problem for some time. i use multiple voice lines for work, one for hiring/recruiting and one for customers that i tell them is my "personal cell"
i thought the best solution would be to have two voice apks installed but i'm not finding a way to do that.

Couldn't you just set up the separate account to forward to your phone account? You could also go into your GMail settings and set filters to forward all notifications to one account as well.

I'm a bit confused as to why they didn't integrate this with the main app. The main app has chat builtin too but it's a bit cumbersome to use. And god knows why it's incompatible with out phones.
Does it have group chat? And my problem with the app is that chat and messages are separate even though they are integrated in the site itself
thanks for the apk dude!
Many thanks why isn't this on the market?
My bad it is on the market, when i saw you guys requesting apk, i assumed it wasn't on market. Nice find, been looking for this for a while, the ability to send a message from my phone didn't think it was possible, i guess I never looked hard enough.
For those who dont have this install MarketEnabler and set it to US, then download it from the Market.
This one works for the Chat portion which is iffy on the official App. I dont get why they dont just integrate it like on the site though
This one is not available in india

It has Group Messaging. Which is the same but from a Messaging instead of Chat perspective. This is a Messaging not Chat app.
How the main Facebook app doesn't merge Messages/Chat is really annoying. This is how it used to be on Facebook.com, it must be at least a year ago but they've never bothered to update the app. I get Message notifications for people trying to Chat but as the app doesn't understand the merge, they never come through.
It's miles better than the Message section in the main app and properly supports Facebook Messages/Chat threading, whereby both appear in Messages.
I've turned off Message notifications in the main app. There's no point getting two notifications for each message.
p.s - Some messages are missing. I open a friend and some of the messages that appear on Facebook.com aren't there in the app.

Working for me, thanks a lot!
is just your facebook inbox with the added group message...
no chat or anything..
works when you have the massage notification and dont want to visit the mobile site all the time..
maybe they release this app because the message section on the regular facebook app is not working properly..

I imagine so but why not integrate it? The one in the main app is broke and this should replace it. It's pretty slick.
