Galaxy S II or Nexus S - Galaxy S II General

I'm trying to decide between Galaxy S II or the Nexus S. Any insights? I like the screen size of Galaxy S II. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

There is no comparison between those two phones, GSII wins all the way. In fact it's the best one out there, I don't see any reason for the Nexus.

Go for the SGSII or wait for the Nexus Prime

if you can afford both then go with the gs2. while the nexus s is actually really fast and works well, it is last years tech and we are already more than half way through this year. the gs2 is very powerful and should provide you with a longer life due to its higher end specs being more compatible with future versions of android.
i personally like the bigger screen and overall feel of the gs2 and have found that the battery lasts longer as well

I have both ))) And both of them perfect ! But ... SGSII is the winner !

I can tell you now the GS2 is the best as it stands now. I've had the Sensation and LG 2X and both don't put a mark on the GS2, so compared to the Nexus S its a no brainer

Nexus S is still based off the SGS1 specs so there is no contest.
If you want the Google experience just install CM7 to the SGS2.

I had a Nexus S and switched to SGS2, there is no contest, the GS2 is better in every way!

i have sgs2 and would love to get Nexus S soon. both will get ice cream for sure! so no sweat which one to get. but sgs2 pawns ever phone atm.

Had this dilemma for a few days before getting SGS2.
Nexus S - super nice body, slick curved LCD; NO HDvideo recording and NO SD card slot !
SGS2 - 1080p video rec, amazing camera, powerhouse, hdmi+otg option, most powerful phone on the market; BUT a bit big (lol), battery lasts only 14hrs moderate use, firmware is a bit wet.

The SGS2 has gotten better in terms of battery usage with the 2.3.4 stock roms so it's not that bad anymore. Light use I can get 4 days on a full charge.

I moved from a Nexus S to an SGS2.
I loved the look and feel of the Nexus S but no removeable storage and no hardware video decoding made me move.
If you are worried about size the SGS2 actually feels smaller and lighter when in your pocket.

I actually find the SGS2 can be a bit awkward to hold depending on how big your hand is. Those with bigger hands will be fine but those with small hands.. the SGS2 is awkward to hold and use with 1 hand.

That's the price you have to pay for a larger display. I do miss the Nexus S' curves

The only phone that can potentially best the SGS II is a new Nexus at the end of this year.
The Nexus S is on the level of (and bests) the i9000.

Potentially. Although looking at the Nexus S... that came out a number of months after the Galaxy S... it still lacks some features that the Galaxy S has. Otherwise it's pretty much the same device.
If they follow the same trend we could be looking at a near SGS2 device as the 3rd Nexus.

Nexus s is a step down in my opinion,
No fm radio
No micro sd slot
Gorilla glass is missing too... (even though i still use a phantomskinz screen protector anyway)
Also, my friend has a nexus s, it doesnt feel as good, and its april and he still doesnt have the 2.3.3 update.

Ahahaha
@OP No for sure not, and there is many threads like this here.
General public decided that Nexus S is not a better choice in no direction over the SGS.
Now its SGSI vs SGSII where there are advantages of SGSII much clearer but wouldnt make me to switch to it.
I change my phone when there is some improvement for me. <<< for me.
As the SGSI is pretty fast the SGSII has no real advantage for me (not playing games) and the design I have now I am happy with it. Also there comes the pain with new phone new software etc.
For me one and only deciding factor will be the screen resolution. (now the htc sensation)
Micro SD missing on ANY phone is an Automatic Dealbreaker for me. (I don't care if the phone can make me coffee in the morning, and have a pizza on the table when I come home)
Heck even some of my old Krusty RAZR Phones laying around have Micro SD support. I'm not gonna give that up just because some company wants to save a few bucks.
Galaxy S vs Galaxy S II will be the real debate this year. The only thing that concerns me about the Galaxy S II is battery life, but we'll see how that turns out after the phone is launched...
Nexus S and Galaxy S are virtually the same. Galaxy II should be the object of desire now..
Thanks a bunch for the reply guys, surprisingly the nexus S owners have pretty much similar opinions about the exchange, plus id have to pay a little more then a $100 for the transaction, anyhow, the thing thats particularly itching me right now is the factory built EXT 4 FS that Nexus S has or the pretty much similar outlook and speed to the best custom rom Cyanogen mod 7 on the Galaxy S, not that its not good on the Galaxy but it has its glitches whereas nothing of that sort on the Nexus S, am i right to think this?

Yep, I can't decide either.
Nexus S (Samsung i9023, ~€400)
+ pure Android, fast, frequent and official updates
+ officially moddable
- big and heavy
+ LCD display
- no SD card slot
- no fm radio
- no GPS (I sent mine back after a few days because the GPS was so bad that it might as well not have been there.)
Galaxy S (Samsung i9000, ~€340)
- TouchWiz, updates depend on the community
+ for all intents and purposes just as moddable
+ very light and compact-looking
- AMOLED display with PenTile matrix
+ SD card slot
+ fm radio
+ surprisingly decent GPS
Both have Voodoo sound.
If you already have an SGS, stick to it, the NS is basically the same phone. It'll stay on the market for a while and only get cheaper, so if community support for the SGS should really wane, you can still get it, and probably for less. At least wait a few weeks till it's clear if the SGS2 is a worthy heir - then choose between that and the NS.
@fallenguru,
Thanks , with your advice and the majority of everyone who replied here, ive made my mind to stick with galaxy s for a while atleast until NS is cheaper

Really? Why?
Because the SGS1's PenTile matrix more than negates any positive properties its SAMOLED screen might have, at least for me. See http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news...exus-ones-screen-science-color-and-hacks.ars/ for pics and technical details.
I guess it depends on an individual's perception. Some people hear the compression artefacts in mp3s, some don't. (I mostly don't.) Some don't see or don't mind the artifacts PenTile matrix produces, others do. Unfortunately, I do.

The "Note" Dilemma we will face soon.......

Samsung SGS III...
So how many who said they cannot go smaller will do just that to get the SGS III?
I think it will be interesting to see if I will after enjoying this "phoneblet"
If the screen size of the G3 is around 4.7 inch or larger I will seriously consider it the purchase/upgrade. Anything below this size is to small for me.
I agree its a problem. any normal size screen is titchy! it wouls however be a real silema if apple released a 4.7" iphone 5!
Good thing hoqwver the note still has decent resale values. . The htc one x looks nice but note with ics will be better!

I don't see Apple in the picture for me at all. LOL...Too much Cuperton control. I would miss a lot more than the screen would make up for.
Smaller screen, no improvment in resolution/qualityt, no S-pen, a useless quadcore that only 1% of the games (gameloft ones) will use. 12Mpx camera that i dont need cause i already have a real camera (and a phone camera will never match a real one), nothing here can use NFC (in france).
Conclusion, i'm fine with my note.
It's not going to cast a shadow on the pure functionality of the g note.
Won't even be considering trading

Thats exactly the point! I noticed it as i went to a mobile store and played a bit with the nexus. For me, the working screen space on 4.7 " was significant smaller than on my Note. Before the SGN, i had an Dell Streak. Due to Dell used Monkeys to write the touchscreen driver and no devs wanted to hassle with the driver, the development stoped at Gingerbread at Beta. Streak has an 5 " Screen. I cant go on smaller size.
Actually my Note is running on 1,2 Ghz (ICS). My Device is speedy and functional. i cant imagine, that Quadcore would boost the daily phone or text experience that much. Games woud run quick as hell, hands down. but for my purposes, Note ist the best Device i ever owned and won´t get back on smaller screen.
No...
No I won't. I need to spend my money on other things and I love my Note too much already. :3

Nice! Wish I had that kind of money. I've owned almost every flag ship android device the past two years, but I always traded an had one at the time. Wish I could have them all still but the note is the best one so far. And I doubt that I am going to trade it for the GSIII. I love the screen size. We'll see when the SIII comes out. The One X also kinda turn me on.
I am not a frequent phone changer, had a n73 before note and won't be changing phone a couple of years. Hopefully there'll be more devices in the 5-6 inc range by then.
I'm not getting anymore Samsung devices after this because of one reason.

I also disliked the software buttons on my galaxy nexus. I am a big fan of the home button on the note though. Very nice.
I am not considering the Galaxy S III at all and the reason for that is the Note's abilities. The screen is perfectly sized and it supports the S-Pen, something that enhances the usability.
On the other hand, the S III is interesting since it will be an "early preview" of what Note II will offer since it is highly probable that the next Note will be based heavily on it.
Therefore, it will be possible to get an early impression of what the next Note will be.
Now with the 5.3" screen - going smaller is extremely hard. My old HD2 feels tiny in comparison.

Note or SIII

Im do for an upgrade and have been wanting the note for sometime now and was going to get it this weekend because of its large screen and my interest of reading on my phone but I just read the article in laptop mag about the SIII and now im split between the two.
Right now I'm using tmobiles s2 and i outgrew this screen already, how long b4 i outgrow the sIII.
IM running official ics now and i know both will come with it so that's not a factor
Question is should i suck it up with the extra half an inch diff and go for the iphone killer, or buy the note?
I really need some opinions. Thanks

This was a tough decision for me as well, but I ultimately went with the S3 over the Note because:
The Note was released in November of 2011 (February 2012 in the U.S.) and is now "old". It's basically a Galaxy S2 with a bigger screen and a stylus.
The Note 2 is due out in only a few more months (October if the rumors are correct), and will have SGS3 guts with a possibly even larger display than 5.3" (and smaller bezels hopefully). It'll also share the SGS3's design whether or not you like/hate it.
The S3 has a 4.8" 720p screen which is still very large, coming the closest to the Note's 5.3" (though not 1280x800).
I couldn't upgrade until May anyway; it was just one more month to wait for the S3.
The Note's display exhibits a black crush problem where there's a huge jump in contrast between black and the next darkest greys.
The international Note gets way more developer love than the U.S. variant, but that won't be the case with the insanely popular and very similar S3s.
My next decision is whether or not to trade up my S3 up for an international Note 2 in October. The next Nexus' in November should also be nice, but not as enticing in my eyes.
I decided to exchange my Note for the Galaxy S III. Some of my reasons were personal preferences so they may or may not apply:
1) I felt the screen on the Galaxy note was ever so slightly too big. When I was in the store that was my initial impression. I hoped I would warm up to it a bit better. I did, but it still wished it were slightly smaller. I wanted something in between the Skyrocket and the Note, and the S3 is right there.
2) I was not impressed with the S-Pen. I found it to be inaccurate most of the time. There was no way to calibrate it and it was often inconsistent. Maybe there was a problem with my unit, but I think I just expected too much out of the pen-based input. Even if it did work better, the only time I used it was playing Draw Something. I'm not the artsy type, so I never used it for drawings or taking notes. There were very few applications built in that took advantage of the S-Pen or even the large screen size. Perhaps there will be when Samsung finally releases the Premium Suite, but at this time they still haven't and there's no telling when that or the ICS update will finally arrive.
3) The internals. Qualcomm S4 is better than S3. Adreno 225 is better than Adreno 220. 2GB of RAM is better than 1GB. Since I was going to be stuck with it for the next two years, I wanted the best hardware I could get.
4) Random extra features, such as the better camera, gesture controls, S voice, etc. While they were not dealbrakers they were certainly intriguing.
5) Better updates (hopefully). Since there is much more uniformity among the S3 models in the US they should be updated quicker without as long of a wait from the carriers. This of course remains to be seen.
The Note was definitely the best choice for me when I first got it. I had no desire for the One X without external storage and a removable battery. However I was never expecting the Galaxy S3 to come out as soon as it did! I'm glad that I was able to exchange it within 90 days. Costco is awesome.
Thanks for the info. I'll be getting the SIII. Hopefully it comes out on my birthday 28th. That would be a nice treat to my self.

The note isn't pocketable and the build quality is way cheaper. My opinion. It has a cool built in pen though.
I got the note when I switched to at&t last month. I loved it at first but after a week I decided it was just too big. I didn't find the S-pen very useful and I had to contort my body in weird ways just to get it out of my pocket.
It's really a phone you won't know about until you try it at least for a few days. I knew I had 30 days to exchange it, so I preordered the galaxy s3 and couldn't be happier.
I never had any problems with pocketing my Note, but the S4 and 2GB of RAM made up my mind pretty quickly. I will probably wind up with the Note 2 when it comes out.

My thoughts after using the Note II for 5 days.

I came from a GS3. So I've owned the Note 2 for for about 5 days and here's is how I feel: It is absolutely a BEAST. Gorgeous phone. HOWEVER, after holding my brothers S3, I feel like going back to the S3 because it seems SO small and ALL OF A SUDDEN I can touch all 4 corners of the screen! I swear I was not able to to that BEFORE I had tried the Note II. Now S3 feels like the perfect size phone. I feel terrible that I'm even thinking about getting rid of the Note II but the feel of the S3 in my hands now is just way too tempting. I previously had the pebble blue, but I'm thinking of buying the brown SGS3. Anybody else's thoughts on this? How do you feel after looking at S3 after trying Note 2? Do you feel your fingers have gotten longer?

I've had my Note 2 for 40 days now. The size is a minor annoyance compared to all the features gained over a S3. Split screen. AirView for web browsing. Just always having a device where I can take it out of my pocket and start writing is irreplaceable. Sure, you can take out a S3, unlock it, open a writing app, then start typing. But that's not like taking out the S Pen and writing just like you had a pad and paper. I think 9 out of 10 times I would just end up choosing to not write things down unless it was something really important. It is true the S3 does look small, but that is also the reason why I would prefer the Note 2. I don't want the smaller phone.

I was going to get a Nexus 4, until I realised that it didn't really improve on any area of the Galaxy Nexus that really mattered to me (storage space, battery life, camera quality etc).
It was either the Note 2 or HTC One X+ for me, but with the Note I felt I could get rid of my N7 which I also hardly used to help fund the Note 2.
I do prefer Vanilla Android but I never had THAT much of a problem with TouchWiz on the S2.
There is no comparison. For me personally the next gen smartphone move logically is the Note 2 and all the other size factor phablets from other oems which come after it.
Lets face it. The battery life technology isnt growing at an exponential rate like the other hardware of the phone. Its just oure physics. Bigger battery longer battery life. Bigger thr phone, bigger the possibility of fitting a bigger battery.
Note II's INSANE battery life alone is a worthy upgrade over any snartphone experience right now. Plus the new non pentile 5.5inch 720p samoled screen is another big factor
For me like I said, "phablet" is the next logical step in the smartphone era

There its no perfect phone for everyone. For some the s3 or n4 is perfect, for internet and email addicts the gn2 is spot on!

I've come from an S3 to Note 2, have to say I'm in love. Screen and battery life are far superior to the S3.

Im glad I read this thread now, I sold my SGS3 initially to buy a Nexus4 but then after the whole stuff around with googles release of it and then selling out in 22mins in Australia and then reading a few average reviews, I ordered a Note 2 instead. Can't wait till it arrives as I think ive made the best choice now :good:
You most definitely have.

bigger screen
better battery life

why would you want to go backwards with the nexus 4!

I feel terrible that I'm even thinking about getting rid of the Note II but the feel of the S3 in my hands now is just way too tempting.

As I tell everyone, if one handed use is important to you, then the Note is not the phone for you.

No I'm not going back to a smaller size anytime soon. However my son just yesterday got a SIII and after playing with it a bit I can honestly say that it's perfect for someone wanting a normal sized device.
this is why i have tyhe best of both worlds i actually own them bought and with the new s3 rom leak it's even better..i'm overwhelmed with the processing power of the responsiveness of the beasts
I've had it for a while now and all I can say is that I'd get the S3 if I hated the size. My partner has the S3 and loves it but envies my note 2. They're similar in function, but the larger screen is a must for me. As is the pen. So it's a no brainer for me. But i'm sure for others its a deal breaker. I personally love the note 2. Also, the 1gb ram in the international s3 sucks. I mean it's fine, but it has redraws and such, and multitasking isn't as fluid. My.02¢

Significant and Suitable Upgrade from SGS2!

I do have a biased opinion about having a nice large screen. I guess I prefer (Phablets but still undecided on how I feel about the Galaxy Note 2 and the DNA as the size is a little bit large. That doesn't mean it is a NO from me just yet)
So if you are like me. You have had your SGS2 since launch. Soon after this, they released the Galaxy Note 1 and then SGS 3. Both have advantages over the S2 for different reasons but still not *UNIQUELY DIFFERENT* enough from the SGS2 to make the change for myself. I am still keeping in mind that both of these said phones "might be better" especially the SGS 3, however just not quite enough to push me over the edge. In fact it somewhat stalled and got me thinking if Samsung were pushing these phones out fast then it is only going to be a matter of a couple of months before we see something that does *WOW* me.
Well I was right, as you will see below is a list of the new upcoming phones that are all awesome and worthy of a genuine upgrade over the SGS2, Don't get me wrong I was very tempted to upgrade earlier but managed to hold back because of the awesome and continued community support for our phone.
Below is the list of phones I have my eye on, just in case anybody out there wasn't aware of these options. I am here today to show you (After googling and reading forums which could have been done by you, but let's face it some people are just lazy + I want to hear what you guys think!)
HTC Droid DNA(Butterfly)
Samsung Galaxy Note 2
LG Nexus 4
Sony Xperia Odin / Yuga(Dogo) Some more info about the rumoured Sony devices
Here is a rough comparison chart of the Nexus 4 / Note 2/ HTC DNA. Unfortunately the Sony devices are still up in the air so it is not covered. Here is another comparison but this time only between the Note 2 and the DNA
Which phone have you got your eyes on? Any other recommendations would be great! I am starting a poll out of these phones
The note is far too big and far too heavy.

Isnt the Droid DNA bigger in size than the note 2 ? Also despite its bigger size it has a smaller screen than note 2. I would prefer note2 over droid dna .

Check here mate.
I think the Note 2 is like .5 of an inch larger. There are some conflicting measurements across different sites
The Underling is currently using a Note, so unlike most of the other opinions served up by people when these threads spring up, his is based on actual experience using the device in question.
nexus 4 xD

Who is "The Underling" ?
I'm waiting for GS4 with my upgrade. Nexus 4 is OK nice but got it's cons. Note is too big for my taste, so for now I'm just waiting but expect GS4 to be my upgrade.

Over the next 6 months there will be some absolute crackers coming out - I honestly think either Sony or Motorola will produce something that becomes the next hot thing
S2 is working great for me and the latest leaked JB firmware gave it a new life . Thanks Samsung !
I have the sgs2 & my wife has a note.
For me the note is to big & the sgs2 is still perfect but I would sell it to get the nexus 4 as I'm loving the Google experience on my N7.

The Nexus 4 seems to be winning the poll right now too. I am amazed that nobody has selected Sony though. Only 1 person for the DNA. Interesting! I would love to see how this progresses
I just wish the Nexus 4 had a 32GB option, 4G and a larger battery, if it was removable then you could at least slap a bigger one in there!
One reason to get the note 2...
I love this thing, you get used to the size after a while. In time it becomes natural and a smaller screen becomes a chore. If you like watching media or browsing on your device its a no brainer..
And the battery life is phenomenal...

I agree. Note 2 is just an amazing device with great battery life and amazing screen
im choosing between sony and google nexus phone. if i have to get a larger screen then i'd rather get N7 for that..
I have no allegiance to any manufacturer so whatever the best specced phone at the time of contract end or upgrade.
