I rooted my MT4G with VISIOnary a while ago, and unrooted it about a week ago with the PD51MG file or something to that wording, because I wanted the gingerbread OTA. I then remembered why I rooted in the first place because the stock OS is glitchy and battery life was terrible. I tried running VISONary again but it just hangs on the rooting screen. Should I try using gfree to root it again or am I SOL?
Did you get the official gb update?
No, I'm still on 2.2.1
I had the same problem. I got it rooted again using VISIONary r14.

You should be able to use the same exact method you used to root it the first time if you are still 2.2.

I remember something similar happened to me, I got temp root but perm root didn't stick with that rooting screen problem too, try to use the pd15 thing again and start from scratch or just maybe factory reset it.
Did you make sure fastboot is off? And other settings are correct? it's been so long I don't remember.

Hello all.
Noob here. Just got my mt4g permarooted but i'm curious what settings I need to run. I had visionary running on boot before rooting. I assumed I needed to turn that off after permaroot but I could not gain root access without it. Anyone mimd helping with the right setup?

Could you provide the steps you took to get rooted or maybe a link to a guide you followed?
If you are permarooted you should have no problems turning off that setting in Visionary.

Everytime I do that, phone freezes after I click attempt permaroot. The screen goes black like it does for temproot but freezes after and nothing else happens.

Anyone?
I think the problem is visionary refusing to permaroot. I'm using r14. Visionary crashes and freezes my phone when I attempt to petmaroot and I have to pull the battery to restart. Any options to visionary? Maybe an older release?
Any help would be appreciated.

I am very experienced in rooting Samsung phones. I would like to root my mom's phone, which, right now is on bone stock, without erasing any data. I need some help (I also want to keep her on stock, the only reason for this is to install RTL languages on her phone).

Try the temp root apps Visionary+ and Z4Root
They may not be on the market, so I just Google them
i cant see why not..but then again ive never tried that..i think it will tho....dont take my word for it tho
Okay, and if I flash the eng hboot, can I just flash a stock RUU to get back to stock and S-On for warrenty?
EDIT: If anyone here is familiar with Odin, what is a similar program to unbrick this phone?

Yes, you can run the One "zip" RUU-Back to stock

Wait, you bricked this phone? But how? And yeah, you could have done a "permanent root" then RUU'd back to stock/S-ON
EDIT: You can perm-root with this GUI tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976605&highlight=gui
It's how I rooted my friend's Shift (I personally rooted mine via CLI but this GUI was out by the time he got a Shift)

About the only way your going to brick this phone is if you flash a corrupt radio or something not intended for the Shift. In a worst case scenario the phone can almost always be recovered by using the the RUU or the One zip back to stock.
Thank you.

No. With temp root changes will be reverted after a reboot.

You have to have the engineering boot loader in order for any /system changes to stick (including the su binary necessary for root access)

Thinking of unrooting my phone and rerooting it. Witch way should I do tjis with, gfree or the vishonary and terminal way?
Sent from my WhiteHTCMyTouch4G using XDA Premium App
That depends, if i was you i would check to see which emmc chip you have as there is two of them and search which one is the good one,and if you have the good one go gfree if you need the sim unlock if not stick to the visonary. Just my two pennies. I rooted with gfree and havent had any problem..
Well im thinking of doing this because when I did it the first time I used vishonary and it screwed my phone up and got stuck on mytouch screen (aka bootloop). I used theunlckr.com vishonary way with my g2 didnt work so I looked through the comments and found an xda thread and did it that way. Did the same on mytouch and screwes it up. Had to pay 50 bucks to fix it

gfree is VERY simple and has not been linked to the dying eMMC chip issues. That has been shown to be a hardware issue. i have the "bad" chip and have used gfree 3 times and my phone is still fine.

Well, actually gfree is linked to bad eMMCs, but it is not the cause. It seems that a phone with the bad eMMC can only be rooted with gfree (not the Visionary/root.sh method).

Whichever works for you.
If you're already rooted - no reason to unroot, unless your phone stopped functioning.

gfree works great, but the advantage to the Visionary method is you automatically end up with the engineering bootloader. The gfree method requires an extra series of steps to do that.

It will still say S-OFF, if rooted with gfree, whatever you do - because it turns off the security flag for real. Your feelings don't have anything to do with the fact that your phone is S-OFF now, and by unrooting it you won't accomplish anything - but judging by the amount of threads you've opened by now, it'll cost XDA a lot of server space .

No root for the OTA yet, but downloading to 2.2.1 and rooting that will net you the same result as rooting the update. Are you just worried about downgrading? I think i have seen you ask this before.
I just got a device with the ota. I just don't know how to do it there's no guides.

I also can confirm that the downgrade works. Just make sure you download the usb drivers for the MT4G and read about ADB it's very easy if you follow the instructions.
I was concerned about bricking my phone also but it does work.
Good Luck.
Ok, so my wife's phone has to go back to TMOBILE by Friday Sept 21st, I have Virtuous Affinity on it and I Unrooted with VISIONary not thinking that i should have flashed something stock first. Visionary only roots the ROM. If you're still S-Off you have the ability to write to the partitions through adb or recovery.

I downloaded multiple versions including the 2.2.1, 2.3.4, and 2.34 (new) version... all those did similiar things, still not getting me back to stock. Does it make a difference that I have a custom rom with 2.3.5 on it?
Any other thoughts?

Why would it make a difference? Also, if it did, I would have asked you about it.
The only reason a good download will not install, usually, is if either you're on an unlocked bootloader from htc-dev, or something is wrong with either your bootloader or phone.
