FROYO 2.2!! - EVO 4G General

I miss you!! Today i lost my htc evo with the damn stupid gb 2.3.3 and filed an insurance claim... Crossing my fingers i get a froyo 2.2 refurb replacement!! I've been seeing that some poeple have been lucky enough so hopefully im lucky enough as well =) fingers crossed............ If you miss froyo 2.2 show your luv!!

cool story mane

Do you miss Froyo, or the ability to root your phone? Big difference, because the stock Froyo build was, in my opinion, garbage. If I have to have an unrootable phone, thank God it's with 2.3.3 and not the factory ROM that I had when I got my first EVO.

well if you end up getting a GB phone, the only other thing you can hope for is that it has S-Off

Quite honestly, I don't think the GB update is that bad. I would rather be able to root and install CM or Decks again, but being that I can't, I am starting to grow fond of the stock rom. I just wish I could get rid of all the bloat!!

Same problem here when I got mine it was stock gingerbread with s-on so I'm looking on xda everyday for root hope it comes soon I miss my kingdom rom

@ MaxCarnage - Yea i guess you're right. I do miss being able to root the HTC EVO. Dont get me wrong I actually think that Gingerbread isn't that bad but just not being able to root it drives me insane!! according to the Trackin number it should be arriving at my house around 3:00 PST so fingers crossed till then =)

Not trying to rain on your hopes and wants, but I just received my replacement from Sprint and unfortunately for me it shipped with 2.3.3. I'm not going to pay damn near $600 for a 3D, so Im trying to get use to the fact that I can't root mines right now neither.
It is what it is! I figure a non rooted updated phone is better than not having one. Nonetheless, good luck on that..

Uuuuuuuugh!! Noooooo!! It came with GB 2.3.3 =/
CLJohnson i hear you buddy... It is what it is and will be until root comes to us. But yea im really not feelin to spend 600 on no 3D either

I'm tired of looking at this bloatware!!!
I'll donate $20 to the first guy who nails it.
Peace.
Be patient grasshopper! It will happen in due time.
Why dont you root it if you want it so bad.
Hate to be a ****, but its your own damn fault. Hundreds of times it was posted NOT to update the phone and wait for a ROM based off the official release or wait until root was achieved. Didnt read em? TFB. I hope no one EVER achieves root this time.

So i got one with root and one thats rooted and I gotta say this yes all these posts whining need to stop. But I do want to say why not? There aren't any roms as fast as this right now and everytime that there is a good one it gets ****ed up or forgotten before its done. The only thing that has any hope is the froyo thing right now because all the devs are working on it together.
I hate to admit it but I agree one hundred percent with dark shnieder. A million times we all said dont install the new signed 2.1 releAse and this shows that ignorance is the downfall for those who do not listen. Do yourselfs a favor all u ppl who installed stock 2.1... when the community tells you not to do something don't ****ing do it. Now deal with your ignorance until 2.1 is rooted.
I don't care one way or the other, I've had working 2.1 for months and I am very happy with it. If you were dumb enough to flash a ROM without researching it first, you get what you deserve. I've been running damages ROM's since they came out and have had little to no issues. I am currently running 2.08.1 and have no problems at all. So, if they come out with another update to DC or not, I'm am very happy with the ROM I have.
Hell, Ive been running ports of Android versions since Donut started to get ported (it wasnt a daily for me since I couldnt get SMS working) then played around with early 2.1 builds. I can say I was one of the few that actually saw all these 2.1 ROMs evolve from pretty basic stuff, kinda like what Froyo is right now.
I learned my lesson back with the PSP: "do not update to the latest and greatest if you know the community will come up with better stuff in days if not hours of that release".
Not everyone flashed the 2.1 RUU. I took my phone in for service and it was deemed hardware failure. They gave me a brand new phone and installed 2.1 on it without asking me if I wanted it. I asked for another phone with 1.5 and they said no LOL. So I am stuck with 2.1 stock until someone figures out how to root it. And I can't wait, because some of the ROMs I have been reading about sound real nice.

I would wait on the root and keep it private until froyo gets released, the rooting process you guys do come up with might get heard by the wrong person and they could patch it in froyo. this is a common practice when it comes to hacking devices that i have seen, once exploits are found generally the dev waits for the next update that way it can be rooted as well. Just my opinion...

Usually, root is device specific (I think). If Google releases Froyo after our "2.1 root", it most likely wont be patched since the Hero is not on the list to get that upgrade.

2.3????

guesses? rumors? news? anyone? lots of hype about this. but it kinda seems like vibrant is gonna get left in the dust seeing as how we are still on 2.1. from what i have been reading, 2.3 (gingerbread) will be out within a week! so us vibrant users will be 2 versions behind! (wtf tmo and samsung?) my thoughts are maybe they didnt update us cuz they where just waiting for 2.3 to come out and wanted to get all the updating done at once. but i do kinda live in a fantasy world (drugs are bad mmmkay) so what are the thought from the fine folks here at xda on this matter?

Jk2 is a build number of the most recent (and most important since its specifically for vibrants) froyo. Before this all the froyo roms out has been built off of other variations on diff models/carrier.
The fact that jk2 was leaked means the official ota for all tmobile customers is real and immenent.

I doubt we'll ever see an official 2.3. Samsung will probably release 2.2 somewhere between 2-4 months behind the competition. That doesn't give me great hope that we'll ever seen 2.3. Figure that it took HTC/Motorola 2-3 months to turn 2.2 final into 2.2 custom versions to OTA, then we are looking at 4-7 months from now for 2.3 if all of the same timeframes hold. That's probably past the window that this phone will receive official updates.
well seems like the ported versions of the firmware updates have problems, like the headphone jack not working. or gps lagging ect. (not to say the developers didnt do a good job{ cuz they did an awesome job}) but i use that stuff lots. i agree with lex tho. i think that we will probly stop geting updates after awhile so that the newer more awesome phones can get bought up.

2.3 won't be that different
2.3 won't be that different It will change the resolution mainly to allow a bigger screen Right now 2.2 really can only function on a 7 inch screen without some mods so 2.3 will have that integrated. 3.0 will have real differences, but Vibrant has become the developers phone of choice so, you will see that on the phone as soon as it gets out.

it is no more official than any of the others that are out.
I doubt it will take that long. Look, the Galaxy S took a while because these are the first phones using the Hummingbird CPU. People say HTC and Motorola are more on the ball, but they're using the same Snapdragon and OMAP cores since the beginning. Heck, Froyo was originally built for the Snapdragon--no wonder Froyo is easy to port to those phones.
Now they've got Froyo on the Hummingbird, I would think future releases will be easier to port based on the accumulated experience.

No. Froyo was pushed to the nexus one in late june.
HTC/Motorola pushed it 2-3 months after that and samsung will wind up another 2-4 months after that, depending on when they finally push it.
2.3 will be pushed any day now to the nexus one, so you can do the math from there if you assume the same timeline. My guess its that pushes 2.3 out of the window for the upgrade.
Guys.. Froyo should be out before Christmas. Team Whiskey and Eugene already got it. And tmobile is sending OTA to people with JI6 to downgrade back to JFD. They're preparing peoples phones.
Okay, we have froyo, now we are set... OH WAIT GINGERBREAD IS COMING OUT I AM NEVER HAPPY OTHER PHONES WILL HAVE IT BEFORE ME CRY CRY CRY CRY.
Seriously, I can assure you gingerbread is not going to come out this year.
And the N1 is the dev phone so of course it's going to be first to snatch up the latests firmware.
Heck, samsung or tmobile DIDNT PROMISE YOU ANY UPDATES. You bought the phone and that is it. They have your money, what are you going to do know? Didn't you check on the behold? I think they are stuck on 1.6 same as the Cliq. BE HPPY you got froyo.
I don't care what anyone else says, I happy with my froyo.

'na man! you want the vibrant' i love my vibrant. but i also am gonna want 4g and firmware updates in the future.

<RANTING>
YES YES YES i am totally with you on that! If it where not for the DEVs work hear i don't think i would still have my Epic don't get me wrong i like the phone a lot, but when i spend my MONEY on stuff i don't want to be the GD BETA TESTER for a company like SAMSUNG with DEEP DEEP pockets filled with money, engineers etc... 2.1 had bugs in the GPS STILL DOES! just to mention ONE (AS HE GLARES at his samsung monitor..typing) It's now Dec 3 and its not out YET
</RANTING>
Now yes i would like samsungs people to take time and FIX all the BUGS and not give us a crapy 2.2 but i have a feeling the SPRINT is the reason its taking so long as they put there BS blotware on
I figure when Sprint rolls out Froyo everyone will be running as fast as they can to a custom ROM. So why not skip the wait and have it now? Then you can stick your tongue out at Sprint and show off your really cool Froyo...
@computerkid23 - There are probably like 50 posts on people complaining about it..but at this point most people calmed down...its better off this way trust me...

Thats because the more stable the original files, the better the custom roms will be..
until of course we start compiling roms strictly from android source..but if it was that simple we would have had froyo ages ago...maybe with info from the nexus S it will be possible..

Sitting on fence
I've been holding off buying Epic until Sprint updates to Froyo. It's been quite a long wait considering so many other phones have already moved to Froyo. (Don't really feel like messing around with ROOTing for custom ROMs.) I guess I may end out waiting longer for next HTC Android iteration with a slide out keyboard.

my tragedy..

I lost my rooted Aria with Froyo 2.2 and all the good stuff on it. What i got as replacement from insurance already has android 2.2.2 installed. Can u imagine how painful it is? i m keeping an eye on this thread and this webpage.. If anybody has any other news or any means by which i could get rid of at&t bloatware and to be able to install 3rd party apps, i would greatly appreciate that..
Well you can follow this link they have found a way to install 3rd party apps on unrooted phones. hope it helps till the s-off comes our way.
When did you get your replacement Aria? I thought AT&T's insurance replacement had been bumped to the Captivate.
If my aria becomes unusable, will the captivate be the replacement?
I just ordered a replacement aria from asurian. should be coming in the mail soon. they told me it would be a refurb aria, but I can hope it will end up being a captivate. doubtful...

Haven't had the chance to get to radio shack. I did call them up and asked them to hold one for me. Even though my new Aria is on 2.2.2 and I am stuck with an un-rooted sense, it's less painful being able to use the trick to allow installing apps from unknown sources, so I still have some decisions to make---be cheap and go for the amazing deal of the $29 Inspire--or future-proof myself and wait for the SGS II.

That thing blows the iphone 4 away as far as specs go. Its screen is an inch bigger than the ip4, twice as much ram, and a dual core faster processor. And a much better camera. Sounds more like this phone is going to be direct competition to the sgs2 and iphone5.

This happened to me too I'm so sad. The microphone on my old aria decided to crap out and now I'm stuck with a refurb 2.2.2 aria. I hope someone can figure this out soon...
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones as far as warranty goes. After having WM phones for a few years I got my Aria in Feb. Actually wanted a 4" phone but decided to get this (happy now that I did) and wait to see what comes out. Almost 30 days to the day I noticed that the antenna on the back cover was coming loose on one of the corners. This is after I was already rooted and flashed a couple different roms! So, I'm thinking the chances of getting a replacement back cover are slim to none and I'm going to end up with a phone that can't be rooted or have to live with possible antenna issues. I call AT&T, they have someone call me. After a couple phone conversations and an email update I get a new back cover in the mail a week later. Amazing!!! Maybe the fact that I've been with AT&T about 12 years helped!

Bought New EVO Shift with 2.2 from Sam's Club

So today my brother and mother both got phone upgrades.
My mom got the Motorola Photon (which comes unlocked) and my brother got an EVO Shift. I too have the Shift, along with a close friend of mine. Both my friend's and my Shift have been rooted and are running CM7 with the x99 kernel.
When I was looking at my brother's Shift, I noticed that it was still running Sense 2.0 (I believe) along with Android 2.2. It was not forced to the 2.3 update yet.
At the moment, it is off and charging.
Hopefully when I turn it back on, it'll remain 2.2 and should be rootable.
That said, just made this thread to announce that my brother got the Shift from Sam's Club ($25) with Android 2.2, and not 2.3.
I should be able to root this right? Why didn't his come with 2.3 or will it upgrade when I turn it back on?
Personally, I rooted mine via the command line, and my friend's with the GUI tool.
If it was 2.2 when you turned it off, it will be 2.2 when you turn it on.. You would have to manually accept the update. As far as why it's still on froyo, pure luck! Tell him to count his blessings and root.

It was partially luck, partially part of the policy in stores. FIFO, First In First Out for the store stock. That Sam's club might not move a lot of Shifts. So there stock is older, like crump said count your blessings . No it will not auto update. But just to make sure no one does anything dumb. Go into menu-settings-System updates-HTC software update , then uncheck Scheduled check. It will ask you if your sure you want to turn it off, yes you want to turn it off. This way no one does anything dumb, like take a prompted update. Also, my advice Root it .
AND repeat tell him not to accept any OTA updates!

I will say, when i get my shift, i will accept an OTA, but i would most likely manually update it. I love gingerbread 2.3.3 with sense 2.1. I thing its better than CM7. I think CM7 is good, but its not for me, i like sense over any custom rom. Many people will disagree, even try to fight with me, im just gonna say it now and get it over with, i get it, you think sense stinks, idc, dont bother starting anything with me. I wont take it kindly.

well if your going to accept the ota updates why are you on this site then since you cant root it? but there are awesome sense roms like Mik in my opinion is the best. cant stand CM7 mainly due to the lock screen, camera app and i enjoy rosie very much on sense.

I get the benefit of being rooted and using GB via a custom rom from here at XDA. I get way more usage from being perm rooted than I ever would accepting an OTA upgrade and then only being limited to temp root right now. But whatever floats your boat. But I for one just don't see the logic of your statement.

I see what your saying, and there is a place for me on here, i know a lot about the evo shift on 2.3.3, and if someone gets a shift from sprint (which comes with 2.3.3 now) i can help them. I am just gonna have to decide when i get the phone.

There are 4 variations of unlocking your phone with CM7, and if you don't like those. Try Widgetlocker.
Hey guys, I'm bringing this thread back up because my brother's phone now can't make calls/texts or receive calls/texts
His data still works (Internet, etc)
It started last Wednesday.
Should I unroot, then call Sprint, or what?
Also, just *2 to call Sprint and have them fix it?
Thanks.
