[Q] Can't Update through PC Companion? - Xperia Play General

Ok so, I want to update my Xperia Play r800i to 2.3.3, when I connect it to PC companion and start the update, the updater gets an error at the "Preparing Computer for Software Update" part, and it says that I am unable to update the phone, I reinstalled phone drivers, reinstalled PC companion and still no luck
Anyone Know how to solve this issue?

Download and use SEUS
Sony Ericsson Update Service. it is easy to use and works like a charm.
I did it, because I had the sane problem as you
Regards

Thanks! gonna try that when I get home in an hour or so

If you have the phone connected to wifi, do an OTA instead.
Settings > About Phone > Software Update > Update Now

It forces people to use a computer when they've modified system apps. If you rooted and removed some, that's why. If you used titanium to back them up and remove them, restoring the bloat will allow an OTA.

New Kies and firmware update

I'm using an I9000M (the Bell Canada version) updated to UGJH2 back before it included the 3 button recovery fix.
The phone is unlocked (using it on fido) and rooted running the One Click Lag Fix and Launcher Pro. I just plugged my phone into Kies and got a notice for both a new firmware and a new version of Kies. Currently waiting for Kies to update.
What I'm wondering is whether it's safe for me with the current setup to upgrade to whatever firmware this is (I wish it would tell me). I'm also wondering what to do to backup my apps/pictures/etc.
Does anyone know which update this is? Is it buggy or is it worth it? I'm currently fairly satisfied with the phone.
Any info is appreciated.

I would wait for the kies update, it should then say which firmware is available for you.
As for backing up your pictures. Kies is a nightmare lol so you would be best setting the phone to Mass Storage (Settings > About Phone > USB ) plug it in (select mount on the taskbar on the phone) and it should show up as a media card. Then just copy things from your phone to your pc
And your Apps, you could install AppBrain(free), register with it and then it will store the list of apps you have on your phone ready to reinstall on any new firmware (just install AppBrain again)
You say you are fairly satisfied with your phone at the moment so maybe it would be best to find out what firmware is offered (on the new Kies) then search XDA for known issues, you might be better sticking as you are until Froyo is finally released.
Thanks stickfinger, I'll do as you suggest, then post here with more info

Even after the Kies update I'm getting no info about the firmware. I guess if I click "update now" it might tell me but I can't remember whether that gives me a chance to then cancel.
I'll proceed with a backup, then move on from there.
Also, do I need to undo the lag fix before updating? I don't think I need to unroot, but I'm not sure about the rest of it.

I've just gone from Cyanogen 2.2.1 back to SE 2.1. I tried SEUS but it didn't provide a recovery option, it just said that there was no update available - I'm guessing because it didn't recognise the ROM.
I ended up using Flash Tool to get one of the SE ROMs on it.
However, if you have PC Companion installed, I think you can do a recovery on the phone regardless of what ROM you're on (it says there's no update but there's a link to 'recover phone' or something like that).
Me ended with the same stuff

nope, i tried that some days ago and pc companion stopped at start of flashing procedure and told me, that there is no firmware available for me. i was running beta4.
then i flashed an old xrecovery backup, that i made after my update to bb .54, and bingo, no problem repairing with pc companion...obviously nowadays the SE update sw doesn't like any other roms...

Its strange that this didn't work for you. I upgraded to 2.2 a few weeks ago, but the instructions I followed decided they wanted to leave out a step. It ended up being a pretty critical step and it really screwed up my phone. So much so that I couldnt even get into the phone anymore. As a last effort, I tried PC Companion to do a repair and it worked. Cleared everything off and went back to the stock 2.1.
Scrub question, when re-flashing the x10, does it wipe contents of the microSD or just internal memory?

A software update is available for your phone...

Hey all,
I just connected my Play to my PC and its saying there is a software update ready to be installed to the phone, how do you find the change log or details of what is in the update? I can't find any information about it!?
My Play is rooted, what do I do?
Thanks
depends on the method you used, if it was gingerbrick carry on, if youve unlocked your bootloader leave it alone, run away, duck and cover!
Yep as Waz said.
Don't update it if you've rooted your phone. Possible brick scenario.
Wait for the geniuses to release some custom roms instead.

I used gingerbreak, so is it safe to update via SE update? do I lose my root? do I just run gingerbreak again after updating?
And finally, what about my apps and saved data etc? do they get deleted with an update?

Could you perhaps find the blob folder, zip the files, probably 3 files, and upload the zip? Then we can create ftf file for flashtool, for others that unlocked bootloader

you have to charge battery. so first, try to charge it with a wall plug, not USB. Then, if you cannot, try charging your battery somewhere, a friend or a GSM service. Then with phone switched off, follow the instruction and flash ROM again by SEUS.
And then, use x8toolbox from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117100
but please read first page carefully and follow instructions. So that it does not happen again.
Battery is fully charged now, What should I do next?
I cant flash rom by SEUS because when I connect device to pc cant recognized..
Use flashtool

Besides Sony Ericsson PC Companion, you have installed in computer Sony Ericsson Update Service (SEUS) right?
if not, go to official page and download / install it .
and follow the steps. from what you are saying, I see that either you do not have SEUS or you do not have the corect drivers installed .
You can search on this forum as well, you may find numerous links.
