Anyone root their new 8gb best buy model? Just wanted to make sure it works before I go ahead (well I do have to get it still). It seems like there are a lot of threads about bricked units. Is that just people screwing up?

It all depends on which version of HC the unit comes with. If it has HC 3.2, it's more of a PITA to root, as you have to downgrade before rooting.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what exactly is the "Best Buy" model?

There is another 8gb model, but as I understand it, this specific model (08S08u) has only been sold by best buy. Not sure what they did but they also had an eee transformer that was its own model number they sold on black Friday. This is only 110v, and I think that's the only difference. However there may be other hardware differences, wondering if others have rooted. Is downgrading that hard? Figure that's the easiest way to get/keep root.
I got a 16gb version today and it has honeycomb 3.1, do I need to downgrade? I am looking for the easiest root possible. Tia

For 3.1 download iconiaroot and you are good to go.
Costco has 8gb. ver of acer is that consider as best buy ver or it can be costco ver or they will merge. I was just kidding 8gb ver of acer is what it is sold in various stores. if is 3.1 it can be root but I think comes with 3.2
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Rooted my 32gb version a day and a half ago using the 3.2 downgrade instructions.
IMPORTANT : Make sure you download the acer recovery installer off the android market BEFORE you start downgrading as I couldn't after going to 3.01... Put 3.2 upgrade in and reran through acer recovery, after doing this I had to get acer recovery installer then downgrade again.
Also make sure you have a stock upgrade to go back to. Pain if you can't find one...
Make sure you read and then reread the instructions, found it pretty hard to brick totally, though I definately wasn't trying...

The model I bought from best buy is A500-08S08u (http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/XE.H8RPN.005). There is also a A500-10S08u (http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/XE.H8RPN.001) which also has 8gb memory, but for example has the 220v power. A500-10S08u is what they have at amazon, and I assume costco (but can't confirm)
More likely than not everything should work the same and I'll be fine, but it would be nice to hear from someone with the A500-08S08u model that rooted.

Already rooted. Mine came with 3.2. I had the files for the downgrade/upgrade method already and it was right before going to bed so I used that method. It went fast and worked well.
Copy the files to your microSD card before you start (including the rooted 3.2 rom you'll upgrade to later). I'd forgotten to do this and was kicking myself when the USB connection wasn't usable in 3.01 (it would connect but couldn't see anything). WiFi Explorer was my friend
The basics for 3.2 rooting for me were....
1. Downgrade to 3.0.1.
2. Root with Iconiaroot.
3. Install Acer Recovery.
4. Flash CWM from Acer Recovery.
5. Install stock rooted 3.2 ROM.
I picked up my order from Bestbuy two days ago. It was A500-10S08u, instead of supposed A500-08S08u . I don't know the difference between them. They look the same according to Acer website. Maybe Acer just rename the 8gb model for marketing purposes, just as what they do on A500-10SXXw for Walmart at lower prices.
Picked mine up two days ago as well. Already have it stock rooted with Thors 1.6 custom recovery and 3.9R3 kernel.
This thing is amazing considering what I paid for it. The above changes and OC'ing it has made a HUGE difference in performance. Keyboard is no longer laggy and everything just runs smooth.
This is for my 10 year old daughters xmas gift (am I crazy for this?). Now I regret not purchasing one for myself as well.

You might need to root if your cell phone uses an ad-hoc network for tethering. That, Titanium Backup, and Nandroid backups are reason enough to root.

That is the method that I used to root my 8gb iconia as it came with 3.2 installed. Here is a link to the complete instructions. http://www.chdcomputers.gr/en/mnu-kb-en/mnu-kb-android-en/mnu-kb-android-devices-en/mnu-kb-android-a500-en/254-art-kb000005-en After following those steps to the letter install https://market.android.com/details?id=com.interphaze.AcerRecoveryInstaller and flash Thors CWM. Hope this helps someone lessen the time to search for all the info.
I flashed the Thor A500 rom v14.2 and it flies now.

Meh... couldn't resist. It's still technically mine for the next 10 days anyway.
I rooted for OC, adblock, TI backup (to freeze apps), custom recovery, etc.
I know everyone likes to say their kid is smart even if they're half retarded, but she listens well and once I give her some instructions I know she won't do anything to mess it up (intentionally at least). I gave her an iPod touch last year and she still asks me before she installs any apps because that's what I asked her to do. My only real concern is her dropping it; it's kinda heavy for a 10 year old I think.
The downgrade method was actually quite easy. You flashed the upgrade.zip file, rooted 3.0.1 with Iconia root, installed CWM, then flashed your desired rooted rom and were done. Fewer steps than the 3.2 root process, it seems.
The only real caveat was to make sure you copied all the necessary files to your sd card before starting as USB connectivity for file transfers in 3.0.1 wasn't working for me.
That sure doesn't look simpler than downgrading, a lot more steps involved for sure.
I rooted via gfree method some time ago. Now I'm running the rooted GB image available here. I've also already flashed the latest radio provided by T-Mobile (from the radios thread in the dev forum). This morning I got an update message from T-Mobile.
Will it automatically apply if I download it. I'm assuming it is nothing I'd want but it'd be nice to see what it is and try to figure out why it'd be getting pushed to me? Or maybe it is coming from HTC. Anyway, worried that selecting it will cause a download and unroot my phone.
I wouldnt recommend accepting it. It will unroot your phone!

It likely won't install anyway. My wife had my phone when the update notification came though and tried to install it, but it wouldn't go.
She handed the phone back to me with a scary triangle exclamation mark thing on the screen (Is there a proper name for that?).
Anyway, there is an error when you try to install and it won't go, so it's pointless to try either way.
I deleted it and am looking to install a rooted updated version of stock GB.
Thanks much folks. That was pretty much what I thought.
Yea, this happened on my dad's phone.
All you have to do is download this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1384791
Then make a backup of your current stock GB rom in recovery, then full wipe, flash the updated rom, and then restore data from your recovery backup.
Did this on my dad's phone a few days ago and it's working fine.

Haha, i have the bad emmc too, but like i said in another thread, I approach things with an IDGAF attitude cause you'll never know til you try. Lol
I don't have enough posts to add to the thread in the Dev forums, so I will ask here.
My Iconia A500 is not rooted, I don't feel that I needed it to be rooted most of the time. Now that is out of the way, I have questions.
Is there a version of this Dev leak that I can flash if I don't care about rooting or recovery? I believe the version he leaked is a CWM or RA recovery flashable only, so I would need the original untouched release.
If I do flash this, I should be able to flash future versions correct, or possibly the final version of the ICS release?
Essentially I would like to use this release on my tablet without caring about root or recovery, but I also don't want to screw myself for future releases.
Is it possible to reflash back to an old Honeycomb release?
You might not be able to post in the dev thread, but you can read it. All your answers are in there, most are even in the OP!

If you don't care about root or recovery, than it is best you stay stock, and wait for OTA updates. This will keep you relatively safe.
Take a deep Breath this could turn out to have issues and not be complete.. There is only reports that it is flash-able.This does not guarantee that is will Run properly. As its a Acer development rom leaked to the public..
I will try it after there are 2 or 3 more days of comments. If it seems to be working well.I must have Root. Hope the post above mine has helped.
JUST Think if it does not pan out you can be one that said IM SMART I WAITED..
GOOD LUCK . DONT CROSS THE STREET WITHOUT LOOKING BOTH WAYS.
This rom is very easy to be flashed on the a500, dear erica_renee. I've done it tonight and I did come, like you, from the latest version of the unrooted Acer stock ROM.
In order to do this, you must:
- flash from your PC, a rooted rom version 3.2 on your tablet with the little app "DotNetDetecter". You can download it from somewhere on XDA Iconia A500's developers threads but I don't remember in which thread I found it.
- install the app "Acer Recovery" (free on the market)
- download the zip of RA recovery (You'll find the link in the Vache's thread) and install this recovery from your CMW recovery you've installed with the rooted rom 3.2 in the first step
- download and install from the RA recovery the ROM ICS that you can download on the website of Vache... Choose the "RA recovery" version of this ROM.
Very pleasant version, this ICS ROM ... but the low volume defect when I record sounds is still present...
Again and again I'm more and more convinced that this problem comes from the LOW QUALITY of these microphones !!!

Can you tether to a android ad-hoc network

Does email exchange work.
I could go on but i will not .. THANKS IN Advance
No root on ICS (yet?).
I guess that you will loose it as well when you will install this Rom as an update by OTA...
I don't really need a root on my tablet, personaly, except when I want to test a custom Rom.
There is maybe a solution to keep the root anyway. Check in the thread of Vache.
Apart from that, everything works better than ever for me (gps, tether through my htc Desire, caméra, etc ... except the recurrent prob with the microphones ).
I don't use Titanium backup (that needs root, isn't it?) but MyBackup pro.
Email exchange? Do you mean the app working with Outlook on Windows? I don't use it neither. I use gmail and I import my other accounts on gmail. Sorry. But my email accounts (pop) work perfectly well.
Everything works very well actually with this Rom. I didn't notice any problem till now. No way to go back to HC...
I wonder if Thor has this yet. He is probably the best a500 ICS dev right now.

Just to let you know. I have flashed with the full 4.0.3 (not CWM/rooted one), and then used the first method here to restore back to 3.0.1, then installed CWM to install a ROM without any problems. I have since updated to 4.0.3 full again as it's by far the best ROM for me.
Ny the way, I noticed this morning that the ability to disable bloatware has been added to the stock ics rom via app section of settings, so one less reason for me to need root.

Yes... one issue is that if he had CWM installed on EMMC it will not update correctly... you will need to use the stock 1.4.1 cwm flashable I provided in another thread and let the nook update.
I am adding snapshots of the 2 storage spots that pop up when I hook the nook to the computer, maybe it can help you guys determine what my moronic friend actually did.
pal jonny,
While I am proud of your generosity toward your friend by helping him but, seriously, if you don't know what to do, why take up that task? If you know then you can help, sure but based on question your asked up there, I feel you don't.
Getting confusing and performing what you not comfortable with could make your friend's NC a mess.
Your friend, seems like he did it b4, why not let him do this time since he collected all info anyway.

Because I do know what to do, I have rooted 3 phones but the Nook Color is new to me and I don't know what his dumb ass did and neither does he, lol. I am working in a different way than most people have, receiving something already rooted and not knowing what was done to get it to that point. I recently had to un-root my phone and it was easier because I was the person who rooted it to begin with.
I am also asking as many questions to get as much information to make sure I do not brick the device.

My suggestion would be take it back to stock... then install what ROM he desires... quite simple.
If so,
a. if you/he wants custom ROM, get CM7.2 RC1 (KANG is a great version). Just format /data, /system, /cache and Dalvik then install ROM
b. if you/he wants stock ROM, 1.4.2 is the latest. MN 5.0.2.19 should be a good tool to root.

Is there something wrong with the regular cyanogenmod stable 7.1?
If I go stock build does it include flash, he wants to give it to his girlfriend to play movies as well. I am trying to convince him to go with cyanogen mod but he wants the functionality of the nook software, I told him there is a Nook app but he hasn't gotten back to me.

Nothing wrong with CM7.1. It's your choice.
If he wants stock ROM then install stock for him, flash should be well supported.
Note: Nook apps is NOT equivalent of stock feature.
Why use nooks Os when cyanogen has stable 7.02 and a promising ICS? I say give the new phirenook. NOOBS seem to like the modifications. Then install the B&N app and she's good.
Just an idea. I haven't tried the stock for some time.
I am back trying to work on this nook color again and i can say without a doubt all he did was autonooter. So if I update to the newest version of the oem o.s. will it wipe out the autonooter because this will be easier for me if it does.
If there is any recovery on it other than B&N's stock recovery... the update will fail... look for my 1.4.1 cwm flashable stock file.
