So i am new to the phone hacking scene and have a few baisic questions.
1. How do you use/do a nandroid backup.
2. How do you instal themes like the Sense-able 3.1.
If you could just point me in the right direction it will help sooo much

You'll have to install the recover img. Use Eris Master Application for rooting and installing recovery. When you're ready to go into recovery, boot up the phone while holding the Up volume key. Then select Restore/Backup and do nand backup.
2. Put Senseable on the root of your sd card. Not in any folders or anything, just put the zip directly into your sd card. Then go into recovery (up on the volume button and the power button) and click wipe data/factory and dalvik cache. Then choose flash from zip and select your rom. Then hit the down volume button to go back into the menu's and select reboot system now. If you need more help just lemme know.

Let me try to answer your questions as best as I can:
1. A ROM is essentially the operating system of the phone. When you flash (install) a new ROM, it's like installing a new version of Windows or Mac OS X or Linux or what have you.
2. A Recovery Image is like a separate partition on your phone dedicated for back ups and the obvious one recovery among other things. I'm using RA 1.6.2 but there are other recovery images out there. I suggest just sticking with RA (other members might agree with me or not. I'm no expert).
3. I believe the Root Image is the update.zip file that you will see in those guides that I referred to. If this is the case, then all it is is a ROM that you will flash that gives you root access (the core folders and settings) on your phone.
Try and look for the Rooting FAQ. It's somewhere around here. Best of luck to you.

i understand there are a lot of new faces here all the time but in the same respect you should at least look over the forums before starting to ask questions. Literally all of the OPs answers are sticky'd at the very top of the the dev section.
I've said it before and Ill say it again, I lurked a long time and read a lot of information before posting any types of questions at all...call me old fashioned but I think you should at least have a bearing of the situation before you start spouting off the most basic questions about rooting or installing custom ROMs (i.e. "

Help with installing rom

I am a newbie needing some help. I rooted my vibrant months ago to have the ability for wifi tethering. It went flawlessly. I initially wanted to wait for the official update. Since it doesn't seem to be coming any time soon I decided I prefer to install a rom myself. I decided to install cyanogen because I've heard good things. I went to the instructions and was instantly bombarded with technical lingo o did not understand, starting with nandroid backup. Well I have rom manager, I did a full backup of my current rom but I couldn't find it on my sd card. I tried to download black hole from rom manager and it just took me to recovery with no options except the normal ones, at this point I felt over whelmed and gave up. I am wondering if anyone can simplify this for me and recommend the best rom? Thanks!

I would either do like the previous post advised and get the official update that is out. From everything I am hearing it is self updated (you have to do it) through Samsung mini kies. Tmonews.com covered the issue, and what you had to do. If you dont want to do that, and want to keep it rooted and put a rom on it, PM me and I will give you further directions and my personal opinion about what rom would be good.

I had a similar issue at first with the recovery. Open rom manager and flash clockworkmod recovery. After that's complete reboot phone into recovery. It might load the regular recovery, if so, use your volume keys until you get to install packages and then click the power button. After that it should run the clockworkmod recovery.

No need to unroot, you NEVER need to unroot, at least with this phone, dunno about others.
Do what xdefied said about recovery.
cynogen is if you want a stock google experience. The official 2.2 update is out, download mini kies or full and update. Go with custom roms if you want a slightly modified samsung experience. Once you get clockwork recovery working it'll be a snap, choose file in rom manager and you're done.

Thanks for the replies. I know I have a lot to learn but I have to start from somewhere, and I just appreciate the people willing to give a total newbie advice and it's good to know I'm not the only one to have problems initially downloading from rom manager.

custom rom help for a n00b

OK so first off I want to apologize, I am a noob. Im on many other differedt types of forums and I know n00bs are universally hated. So bear with me.
I know a decent bit about computers/phones/technology. Well more then your average bear at least. Not as much as you guys though.
My phone is permarooted, and now im looking to put a custom rom on. My brother permarooted it for me.
OK I know you guys are gonna say omgz read all the info on the site it's all here. I went to the android dev forum and there are sooooooo many builds I don't even know where to begin. I know none of the cm mods are 'stable' yet. But surely some more then others, no? What are the differences between 6, 6.1, and 7? Any reccomendations? I will be attempting this tomorrow.
If anyone can give me some pointers, point me in the right direction, newb friendly teks.
Any advice or input in very appreciated.

If you like stock android, I would highly recommend cyanogen mod 7. It turned my mt4g into a speed demon. And it is stable enough to a daily driver.
If you like sense, ( why would anyone) then I'd recommend the ice glacier rom, it is close to stock but with alot of bloatware removed.

"ROM Manager" is an app (search the Market). Clockwork Recovery is installed via ROM Manager (do it two or three times, sometimes it won't "stick" right after you are rooted).

This is done from Clockwork Recovery. You can either run ROM Manager and choose "Reboot to recovery" or power the phone down then power back up while holding volume down. There will be a backup menu (nandroid). Make a backup (it saves on your SD card).

Search the forum. Sorry, I'm running a ROM that doesn't require recovery 3.x. Once you find the recovery image you need to flash it via adb or directly from a Terminal Emulator app on the phone. Usually flash recovery <your_recovery_img> or via adb in fastboot mode fastboot flash recovery <your_recovery_img> You can also perform a full (SYSTEM) wipe in recovery mode.

DL the ROM, place the zip on your SD card. Reboot into recovery (should be there already after doing a wipe in step 3) and pick "Install zip from SD card". Scroll to your ROM's zip, select it, confirm, watch the magic happen.

I don't use a CM ROM on this phone but did on my G1. Search the CM site or the forums here. CM ships "bare android", aka the AOSP (Android Open Source Project). Things Google adds (Gmail, Calendar, Navigate, etc) can not ship with CM due to copyright. You can, however, download and re-install them (since they came with your phone anyhow).
I suggest you read things thoroughly and treat everything like you will brick your shiny new toy before ever attempting it. Make sure you're willing to spend $450 retail on a new phone if you screw up. The first time through any of this is NOT for the faint of heart, and you cannot be overly cautious.
You'll probably get a lot of flames of "OMG DONT DO ANYTHING YOU DIDNT SEARCH AND READ", but good luck. Just seriously, be sure to read everything at least three times before doing it. It gets easier once you've been doing it for a few years, but the first trip....It's a deep rabbit hole

[HOLY CRAP][SPRINT P100] Stock to CM10 JellyBean - Complete Walkthrough

Requirements: Root
From rooted stock or a custom rom, just download and install updated Rom Manager from the Play Store and download CM10 Nightly and GAPPS. Reboot into ClockWorkMod, factory wipe, disable signature check, flash CM10 twice. The first time partitions our tabs and reboots. Flashing a second time is for good measure. Then flash GAPPS. Done.
Note: I am not sure if Rom Manager can flash ClockworkMod directly. I personally updated from ICS > CM10 by downloading CM10 and GAPPS through GooManager and flashing manually in ClockWorkMod.
Its been reported that you can go directly from rooted stock to CM10. I've actually completed everything below to get to ICS first (Stock > ICS > CM10 JB).
CM10 is a much better experience. The tab works much better, doesn't freak out, lasts longer, plays better.

Wow. Lots of different, confusing, and scattered information about how to go from stock Gingerbread to the latest CM9 build. It is all very confusing and honestly most of the useful information isn't even on this site. So I figured I would help myself (and others) in creating a very detailed walkthrough of the process required to successfully get from GB to CM9 Build 7.
**This specifically outlines the methods to take a COMPLETELY STOCK Sprint Galaxy Tab 7" SPH-P100, unrooted, to a ICE CREAM SANDWICH rom. I "think" it might also work for the Verizon CDMA and a few others. I think the ROM itself is a general overall generic build for all 7" Gtabs. So heads up that if you have a different version, you might want to use this as a guide rather then a step-by-step.**
BACKUP EVERYTHING YOU MAY NEED BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY THIS PROCESS WILL FORMAT YOUR GALAXY TAB
GET CONNECTED!
We need to download Heimdall's App and his Drivers (Main URL). This is the first confusing steps as everyone suggests using an older version, but the included drivers don't work on newer Windows OS's. So you have to mix and match a few different versions to get it working. I've already compiled an archive with everything you need: Heimhall Mixture /w zImage & ClockWorkMod 5.0.2.7
1. Extract everything to a simple folder [ex. C:\GTABICS ]
2. Turn off Gtab. Hold VolDown+Power until you get to a downloading screen
3. C:\GTABICS\Drivers\zadiag.exe to load drivers [try running as Administrator]
4. C:\GTABICS\heimdall-frontend.exe to start the process
5. Kind of confusing. Focus on the "BROWSE" buttons. Look for "Kernel(zImage)" on the left and "Recovery" on the right. Hit browse for each one and select the appropriate file from C:\GTABICS. Obviously "Kernel(zImage)" = "zImage" and "Recovery" = "recovery.bin".
6. Make sure Kernel(zImage) and Recovery both have files selected and a checked box. While GTAB is at the black Downloading screen: Hit "START".
7. The process is pretty fast. Don't rush. At this point your tab will probably just bootloop anyway.
LET'S GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD
Now you have ClockWorkMod installed and a proper kernel, most flashers will feel really at ease right now. But there are a few little quirks that will cause this to go bad. You have to install 2 versions of ICS to get to the latest; One using the existing partition table, and a second that will update to a newer format. You obviously have to install GAPPS like always with a CM rom, but not so fast, you have to manually "MOUNT /SYSTEM" in CWM before it will even take. And there is the fact that you have to manually open and edit the CM9 Build7 update and remove code....[holy crap].
But it is pretty easy once you go through it once.
REQUIRED FILES
JT1136 CM9 V5
JT1136 CM9 V7 UPDATE
GAPPS
Prepare CM9 v7 Update
1. On your PC, open "update-cm-9.0.0-RC0-galaxytab7c-KANG-BUILD7.zip" and browse to META-INF\com\google\android
2. Copy "updater-script" to your desktop and open with Notepad and remove the first 3 lines or just Download it.
3. Drag and drop the update-script back into the META-INF\com\google\android folder, overwriting the existing one.
If all goes well, you are now done with the PC.
COPY FILES AND FLASH
1. Copy Build5, the new Build7, and GAPPS to your microSD card.
2. Boot into ClockWorkMod: Power off. Hold VOLUP + POWER
3. Factory Reset / clear cache / wipe Dalvik Cache / Breathe
4. Flash zip from SDCard: locate Build5 and Flash
5. Factory Reset / clear cache / wipe Dalvik Cache / Breathe
5.5 [OPTIONAL] You should be able to boot into ICS at this point if you want to make sure build5 flashed properly before upgrading to build7
6. Flash zip from SDCard: locate Build7 and Flash
At this step, my GTab rebooted in the middle of the process the first time. It freaked me out but I assume (now) that since it changed the partition tables, it needed to reset. So I did it a second time just to be safe:
7. Flash zip from SDCard: locate Build7 and Flash
8. Factory Reset / clear cache / wipe Dalvik Cache / Breathe
Congrats. You should have a working bootable CM9 build. But lets flash GAPPS so we have our Google services. This is tricky.
9. Mounts and Storage > Mount /System
10. Flash zip from SDCard: locate GAPPS and Flash.
11. Finally [!] reset device and prepare for boot.
Now you are on the latest CM9 build [7] and have the latest GAPPS installed. Hopefully you are booting now and see the famous ICS Boot Animation. Have fun. In the future you should be able to simply download new roms as they are available and flash normally like you would any other device.

The above procedure will set your Tab as a Verizon version. If you plan on using the Sprint cellular service or just want everything to match, then flash this via ClockWorkMod.

I didn't do any development work. All credit goes to Heimdall for his fantastic Recovery Flasher and jt1136 for his great stills porting this awesome rom over to our Galaxy Tabs. All I did was bump and grind my way through to see a successful working flash. I figured if I didn't post a walkthrough here, I would hate myself in 6 months when I boink something up and have to do this all over again. I would recommend you keeping all of the files safe somewhere to prevent this headache again.

i have been thinking about moving up to ICS with my sprint sph-p100
just not sure if i should jump now or wait till more things are working ?
do the things working out number those not , is it ready to be a daily driver yet?

Camera fully works but is flaky sometimes. Video out isn't working yet but he's working on it.
Other then that, its golden. Very fast and works well. Really worth it. Feels much better... like an actual tablet vs a large phone.
Iffy Camera and video out aren't worth holding back. One of the benefits is now Wiimotes and PS3 controllers will pair up using their respective apps now.

I bought my Gtab off of ebay flashed to work on Boostmobile's 3G network. It works great, and had no problem with the official OTA upgrade to Gingerbread.
Now I'm dying to upgrade to ICS but am worried that this would mess with my 3G connection. I can't provide any details of what went into the flashing (its not a process I understand), but I'm hoping that someone out there will.
So, if I follow the instructions in this thread will I still be able to use my Tab with the boost 3G it connects to now?

I don't use the cellular network (sprint) but it does come up and show signal. I don't use it as a phone or anything like some people (supposedly you can install phone.apk and make calls over a voice plan).
I just use the tab as a tab. I just wanted to confirm that it appears to see the cellular network fine.

just made the plunge had some issues with the drivers for heimdall and after that i got a fail when flashing hit start again and it flashed
followed all the steps and im on cloud 9 now wow
gonna take a few to get used to ICS

Sprint patch for what? Mind linking? No offense but posts like these without links or more information is what creates confusion.
I haven't used a patch at all and everything seems to be working. I also never heard of a patch to fix anything.

you have nothing to worry about, 3g will still work.. i have flashed many roms on mine including ics ones and 3g still worked.
well i shouldn't say many roms...i've flashed it many times to ics and back to gb.

it changes the wireless from showing veirson to sprint and the tab to sph-p100

Try re-downloading the version 5 zip again. Make sure you don't edit anything within the zip before you put it on your SD card. This happened to me when I edited the version 7 zip as instructed above.

I think 4.0.3 is the latest ported over. I have a Galaxy Nexus and 4.0.4 was just released... so I would expect delays in porting that over to unofficial devices.
The patch, I've found, is just cosmetic. Once you upgrade to ICS using this method, the build.prop has everything setup as a Verizon Device (name, settings, etc). They can all be manually changed but there is a patch that you can flash via ClockWorkMod that does everything for you.

Hey what's up guys I just threw this on my sprint tab... I had a few quirks with it early... when I first flashed the clockwork mod on it, the screen was discombobulated... the capacitive touch orientation was in landscape mode while the actual screen was in portrait.
So when I had to put the files back on the tab after modifying build 7 zip. I had to figure how to unlock the screen and then and also to choose "connect USB to storage"
Then I got a little nervous while doing the wipe because it took long. I thought it froze..
Just a heads up of what could happen to other guys .
Also now after full install, I find that my ram is usually pretty low and my CPU usage is almost always @ 100 percent .
Taking away from the fluidity... any suggestions ?
I restored my email from titanium back up and also my browser bookmarks, now they don't open up or close immediately. This happens with a lot with system data restored things....

Whenever my tab starts it says encryption unsucessful, how can I get past this screen?

Hey guys so I am coming over from using a jailbroken iphone to now using a rooted nexus 4, which i found harder to do than jb an iphone (yeah ik i'm that bad)
And so here I am today I have my nexus 4 on the 4.2.2 update, no custom rom or kernel or anything, just super user access. And I really wanna start doing more such as the 4.3 update, custom roms and tweaks and such but before then I wanna make sure I got my back up down.
I rooted using the "Nexus 4 toolkit" and by choosing the one option does all option, which installed the twrp backup I believe.
Now I am super noob to android and i've already read the pinned guides for introduction to android and rooting but the rooting one was too complicated for me.
So I'm asking for easy 4th grade instruction for anyone who has the patience and time to help me accomplish these things
1. get onto 4.3
2. have backups for future use
3. be able to have a custom rom installed.
4. not end up with a new paper weight (like I did before when I first tried rooting, yes I'm that bad)

1. Download the Nexus 4 Toolkit which I'm assuming you already have since you rooted your phone.
2. Install a custom recovery, I recommend TWRP for ease of use and because its awesome D).
3. Download the 4.3 flashable zip from the Android Development forum and put it on your external storage.
4. Turn off your phone.
5. Hold down the power + vol down button til you get a screen which says start, and a bunch of scary looking things
6. Use the volume keys to scroll down to Recovery Mode
7. Click the power button
8. Once you're in TWRP, click Backup
9. Click start
10. It'll take a while, but once its finished, go back to the start screen of TWRP and click Install
11. Click wipe, then yes
12. Find the zip file of the 4.3 flashable you downloaded.
13. Click it
14. Wait a bit, and you have successfully installed Android 4.3!
Additional Info:
Regarding wanting to flash a custom ROM, do the same process you just did except with a custom rom zip rather than stock android.
If you ever want to restore, wipe then go to restore and select the backup you'd like to restore from

Pretty good. I do believe they already have twrp. So just power off. Or download quick reboot app. Or ROM manager to reboot recovery if you Dont want to hold power and volume down till you get to fast boot. Or boot loader. But its all easy. With twrp you'll see you swype to engage. First thing when you get into your recovery is just click backup. Follow prompts. Rename or leave as date. I name mine virgin flash. Then back out to twrp opening again. Then wipe data factory reset wipe cache and dalvick cache. Then most cases no need to wipe system unless changing base. In this case of 4.3 I would. And returning I would. So just reboot once your backed up. So you can go download all your ****.
Gooim. App fave. Play store you'll find it. Then ROM toolbox. Then titanium backup. Then Franco kernel app. Then system tuner or system panel. Then kernel tweaking apps. All are up to you and optional. If your looking for something worthy to flash I like these.
Carbon. Liquid , and jelly beer. Also miui is the "Different ui" as most others will look identical. The ones I named can have themes in the chooser downloaded. Gives android its ui overhaul. Just enjoy ...

Now I am super noob to android and i've already read the pinned guides for introduction to android and rooting but the rooting one was too complicated for me.
So I'm asking for easy 4th grade instruction for anyone who has the patience and time to help me accomplish these things
1. get onto 4.3
2. have backups for future use
3. be able to have a custom rom installed.
4. not end up with a new paper weight (like I did before when I first tried rooting, yes I'm that bad)

As you mentioned about nexus 4 toolkit just use it to relock the boot loader and then do a normal reboot
Now go to setting>>about phone>>system update there you will see that 4.3 update is available just do it now you should be in 4.3
Now follow this guide for rooting and stuff http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2384824
by following the guide u will be able to get root access in 4.3 and can be able to install a custom recovery
Using custom recovery u can flash a custom ROM NOTE:- FOLLOW THE INSTURCTION GIVEN BY THE DEVELOPER OF THE ROM IN THE THREAD
