So I work for sprint, in a corporate full service store in Albuquerque, NM. I have been having customers come in to my store for the last few months telling me they have been getting 4G. I normally just nod my head, tell them "thats cool" and send them on their way. Our city took a long time to get 3G, so the thought that we are getting 4G (when it hasnt even been announced in any new markets in quite a while) is ridiculous.
A week ago, to experiment, I turned 4G on at my house to see what would happen. "4G connected" popped up in my toolbar. A signal strength-o-meter notified me I had 2 bars of 4G service. I still remained skeptical, quite certain Ashton Kutcher was going to pop out and notify me I was punk'd. I downloaded speedtest, and lo and behold, I am clocking 5+mbps in my house. Needless to say, I am very pleasantly shocked. No where is there any documentation that my city should have 4G.... But, I got it.
Lesson of the story: Fire up that 4G radio every once in a while, you never know what might show up!
According to Clear's coverage map, downtown Detroit has 4G. I was able to connect to it once, but never again after that.

That happened to me last year here in Boston, MA. I had good 4G server but one day it just vannished. After several months they restablished connection and now its even faster than before.
I've worked in the past rolling out GSM antennas an I know how th radio department thinks; its a tough job to make sure the right desicion is taken in every city and every location within, patience is the key.

There's this one very specific spot in my shop (warren, mi) that I get 4g. Might be one bar but got it there. Move the phone from the little spot and ill drop the signal. Can't get it outside of the shop or anything. Just that one spot. Very weird lol.

Don't just look at sprint's coverage map, also look at Clear's, they even have an app for android called "Got Clear?" that helps you find 4G pockets. As for 4G in maricopa valley... still absolutely nothing except for PARTS of mesa and PARTS of Scottsdale... its messed up.
You are lucky to be in coverae of a spectrum protection site. Check out clear.com or sensorly.com maps.

Oh yeah, almost forgot... according to Clear's coverage map, there is 4G about 3 miles east of my house. I've never been able to connect to 4G in that area though. Wonder what's up with that... hopefully when LTE rolls out, Detroit/Metro Detroit doesn't get screwed over again

The only 4g in my town makes no sense at all, it is lining the freeway for about a mile and that's it, tried to get close to try it but cant , why would they do this so no one but ppl on the freeway can use it?

IT's a conspiracy to get more people to text and drive and die texting so they can control population and then control our minds by limiting our range of service.
my town is supposed to have 4g but i've only ever gotten it to connect on this 1 road and it disconnects after a minute. :[

Noticed in the strip district, downtown and north side today that 4G is on in Pittsburgh. Was pulling 3.5-4 down, 1 up. Still limited deployment in the city but they must be getting ready for the full rollout.

I also heard rumors of 4g on in Monroeville... so suburbs on major roadways hopefully will get 4g. The farthest north that I noticed 4g active on 279 was the Hazlett/Venture exit.
I live just outside of the city in Sharpsburg and I have 4g turned on now and not getting any signal.

I tried the 4g while driving through the city this morning and no go. I guess it was only on Saturday for testing. Will keep watching the 4g icon though.
4g was definitely on last week in Monroeville. Hopefully it will make its way around town including the South Hills!
While driving through downtown around 5pm, I was able to pick up 4G. However, it could never finish connecting. It would say scanning, connecting, authenticating, obtaining IP address, then flash something very quickly (perhaps "disconnected") before starting the cycle over. Not sure if it's an issue with my phone or just issues with the 4G since they're obviously still testing it.

I have not been able to connect to 4g downtown since Saturday. Was probably only on for testing. Though I do get signal alerts when driving through the city. I'll be giving it another try this weekend to see if the 4g is back on downtown. No idea about monroeville or turtle creek.
just in monroeville today for dinner. the duck pond there was signal. by the bmw dealer, by the mall, by target, on the parkway from penn hills exit to the monroeville exits(turnpike). i couldnt connect at all. my phone is rooted and been flashed many times so i thought my 4g was broke but my 2 kids and wife have the evo (UNTOUCHED) and they couldnt connect either so it must be not ready yet. heres to hoping it gets better tomorrow. lol
oh and forgot was in turtle creek today for kids dentist appointment and right by the citizens bank my phone picked up signal but couldnt connect
Good info guys. Well lets hope turn the switch on everywhere in August.
Sounds good, I wizards at BestBuy today by the mall, but didn't think to try. Well 2morrows a new day!

I spoke to a Sprint rep yesterday. She said that the appearance of the signal was a side effect of them testing the market, but she couldn't find anything on an anticipated rollout date yet. So she recommended to keep the 4G radio off for the time being, and to check back every now and again and watch the websites to see when it would be officially deployed. I was hoping it'd be deployed near this Froyo rollout, but apparently it's not to be.
By the Monroeville Mall again today, and i actually did pick up the 4 g signal. But like earlier stated it would connect to Sprint and then kick me out and start over. Good sign people, good sign!

I work in downtown Miami, just turned on my 4G and it connected!
Averaging 3Mb down on the phone, not as fast as other areas but a lot faster than the 3G connection.
Just hope it stays on and gets better with time.
4G turns on, but it still shows I am on 3G. Where in Downtown are you?
Someone on here posted a while back that they were able to pick up 4G in downtowm Miami. Apparently, they are doing some beta testing of the soon-to-come 4G towers they have in place here or something. I work off of Flagler and Biscayne Blvd, and I haven't been able to pick up 4G; says "scanning" but never connects.
ort84: Is your phone rooted? My phone is and I've heard of some people's 4G not working right after certain rooting processes. I've never bothered to check if mine is working correctly since we don't have 4G here yet, but now I'm curious as to whether mine is messed up or not. Time to start digging through threads! lol
I'm running the stock 2.2 rooted yes.
I'm at nw 1st court, its actually considered overtown but considering how close it is to downtown its basically downtown area.
Just tried it and No 4G in Miramar... Ahhhh... Turned on but did not connect.
Well, I just checked and the WiMax MAC address on my phone matches the sticker behind my battery, so technically, my 4G should work if it is available. However, mine has been scanning for a good 15 minutes now and nothing. Lucky you, I guess. lol

Excellent glad to hear it, welcome to 4G.
I live in Clyde, about 40 mins away. I am pumped to try this out. Where exactly in Toledo have you experienced this? I know that in Columbus, 4g was only available near Polaris. I really hope 4g makes it way east to me, even if it does suck my battery more than one of those pale, glittery vampires from Twilight.
Ok, where is a cool place in the 4g coverage area I can go to hang out for a while and test the 4g on my phone? I'm SE Michigan and Toledo is the closest I have to a place with 4g, and I am starting to become obsessed with testing it out
Looking for something off 75 before the 475 interchange where I can occupy myself for a couple hours to test it out
4g in Youngstown Ohio
4g is now live in Youngstown Ohio. Anybody else notice?
Its live in downtown I believe. Check clearwire's map tho to be sure. Watch a Walleyes game or go to the restaurants that aren't closed yet on the docks.

Actually just south of homewood and hillcrest is willys park which might be best for you, right off I-75 and wide open area in the center of coverage, and a safe area compared to a lot of the coverage area.
Or, maybe the toledo hospital in case you get shot (kidding).

If I remember correctly its all based around the new arenas which would be smart.
Edit: Looking at the map right now, it seems that spans from Dorr Street to as far north as Eleanor but coverage is sparse. It does seem to be around the new arenas though Right around Michigan Street and Erie Street. Most of Bancroft and Monroe is covered downtown. As is Detroit. Maybe I'll have to flash over to CM 6.2.1 Alpha and test it out when I go to another Walleye game.
Edit 2: Looks like only the Huntington Center is covered. Fifth Third is just out of range. At least thats what the map says.

I was able to pick up the signal on my commute to work going 475 east to 75 south. I connected to Sprint's 4G somewhere between the Detroit Ave exit and the Collingwood exit, with 1 or 2 bars as I headed downtown. This actually pisses me off somewhat. Looking at the map theyre installing in Macon, Warner Robins and LaGrange. LaGrange has a population of what, 50K? But they cant fill in the million gaps in coverage in Atlanta???
I agree. Atl is hit or miss with 4g coverage. Some spots, I've hit 11 mbs though. Inside its another story.
I'm just dumbfounded that Augusta doesn't have Sprint 4G yet. Hell, we just finally got T-Mobile HSPA+.
I was actually at the sprint store off of Russell Parkway this weekend getting my wife a new phone and asked about 4g. Like most people have said, they are definitely in a test phase right now, with no official announcement. The lady i talked to did say some areas have 4g coverage. I turn on my EVO's 4g in the store and got 7mbs download speed versus 1mb 3g. Unfortunately i'm never on that side of town and I don't get coverage at my house south by HWY96.

What? First off iPhone has no 4G and they pay the premium data charge too. You don't like it go pay $50 for the 5GB cap on AT&T. Second off Wimax will be around until at least 2015 with the current Clear unlimited use contract Sprint has. They may negotiate a usage contract after that if there are still enough Imax users out there. Sprint is putting all there efforts into expanding their 3G and 4GLTE.
If you have no 4G today op it is most likely a tower down for repair or upgrade.

It was being wonky in Baltimore,Maryland yesterday. On a somewhat related note, how far is the range of a WiMAX tower? When I get WiMAX on the highway, I'm assuming through highway towers, 4G jumps in and out to the point where it's better to turn it off and let the retarded phone jump from 3G to 1x over and over because 4G drops to 3G at least every minute and can't be guaranteed to come back. I wouldn't really mind if they killed WiMAX towers. I don't get it at home and from what I can tell it's complete **** for people who can get it. I went to NYC for a weekend expecting the city to be blanketed in nice 4G goodness. Speeds were about 1.5x 3G and coverage was horrid.

Dude! That's slow compared to my experience with Verizon LTE. My city is fortunate to have steady cell signal but otherwise it's a small hick town that carriers don't care about. My VZW friend get 30 to 40 Mbps down on LTE. Closest WiMAX is an hour and a half away.
And... Why the hell would Sprint sign a contract with a technology that makes out at 1/4 of the technology Verizon was working on? Or is it that the bastards cap us?

So back to Wimax being shut down...
Sprint will have wimax working for the life of your phone. Even if they and Clear both switch to LTE, and even if they have to extend their contract with Clear to do it.
Just look at how long they kept iden functioning, long after they stopped selling the phones. Wimax will be very much the same.

Still, it has never been a real concern for me, as I use WiFi at the 2 places I go most, and 3G has actually been rather stable for me in both DC and Baltimore.
Like so many have said... its all... location, location, location...
You are correct, DC. I travel extensively for my job, and I see major differences in each city. And, the Epic being such a complex unit, it probably varies phone-to-phone. I'm gling to Cleveland today and tomorrow, and I have historically always had the fastest and best 4G connections in Cle. Likewise, in New York, I sputter and strain on 4G. Home in Orlando, its 5 minutes on, 5 minutes off.
If they are just turning off the lights on iDEN now, I'll bet we see WiMax for several more years. Think of all those OG Evo's they sold on opening day in June 2010.....

Ha, it's funny you mention it, but I noticed a stronger 4G connection in Tampa yesterday. I was in the same spot I always am when using 4G and I was getting a faster speed. I even when inside, where I normally don't get 4G and got a lock.
Still 4g where I live pretty close to Baltimore. Waiting for LTE here to upgrade.

And... Why the hell would Sprint sign a contract with a technology that makes out at 1/4 of the technology Verizon was working on? Or is it that the bastards cap us?

Yes, because Sprint looked into the future to see what technology their competitors would eventually use, and made sure to pick a slower one... it definitely didn't have anything to do with the fact that wimax was deployed months before lte, or the forward-flowing direction of time
But on a serious note, back when Sprint chose which tech to invest in, early reports indicated that wimax had better buildng penetration (relative to the power input). What good is a fast data connection that you have to go outside to use it? Sprint went with the best option for their budget, so they could provide a 4G connection without losing their competitive pricing (or their profit - it likely would have been one or the other, with the same long-term result)

Kind of off topic but with lte will it be the same lte for all service providers or is the frequency different for each company?
