Hi all,
I've got a rooted Iconia on 3.1. I installed System App Remover from Market and I'm able to see all the Acer bloatware installed. I've removed several that are useless/take up space. [I know many of you recommend renaming them, but does that remove them from the App listing?]
But, I can't seem to find the nook app to delete it!?
Has anyone successfully deleted the Acer installed Nook app?
I used root explorer to delete it. The apk is located in system/vendor/app. If you have root explorer make sure to change to mount R/W.
but wouldn't this cause an issue with the update?
I heard if you are missing any of Acer files inc. bloatware apps the update will fail?

Quite possible - however it is quite a simple matter to keep backups and restore them when updating.
Or you can use an app like Titanium Backup, worth every penny and helps with this.

Well I don't know about OTA update, since I bought the Iconia tab I have never received an OTA update. Every time I check, I always get "your device is up to date." I was able to update from 4.010.11 to 4.010.13 with no problem (using one of the update package found here). It actually reinstalled the bloatware apps.
thanks. Ill giveit a try

How do you stop the B&N firmware updates?
I’m running 1.0.0 and have no desire to have my Nook updated and lose all my hard work.
I’ve had it one day and I have rooted, installed Market, downloaded tons of apps that work on my DX and don’t have any issues yet.
Even the Demo of NFS Shift works on this thing!
Just say no to an update.
I searched xda a few days ago and found this way to prevent updates (I changed the words a bit in my personal notes) - I can take no credit for this method...
To disable OTA (over the air) updates:
Change the name of this file: otacerts.zip to anything else
To do this, get root explorer ($3) from the market
Run root explorer
Go to etc/security/otacerts.zip
Hit the little mount button near the top to change r/w to r/o
Rename the file otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip_DISABLED_OTA_UPDATES
Hit the little mount button again to change r/o back to r/w
Hopefully this will do the trick.
I'm rooted on 1.0.0 as well and have been for a few days now. I haven't been updated OTA to 1.0.1 at all. I read somewhere that once your'e rooted, OTA doesn't work. Is that true? Or should I take this precautionary step as well?
Do a titanium backup and don't worry about it either way...
Sent from my NookColor using XDA app
Don't do the above if you use the B&N Store. It'll cause your device to reset.

Thanks for the heads up. I've already got a Titanium backup on my apps so I should be ok if mine resets. I'll leave mine as is for the time being.

So why didn't you update to 1.0.1 as suggested in the nookdevs wiki?

1- Does "do the above" refer to changing the name of the OTA file or does it refer to making a Titanium backup? (I assume the first?)
2- Does "if you use the B&N Store" refer to shopping for a book on wifi or going into a physical B&N store?
So... our choice is to stop an update and loose the store or get the update and possibly lose our root?

As in don't do the OTA file modification above if you use the B&N online store on the Nook. I don't think it's been proven either that the file mod absolutely prevents an update as sometimes it differs per device. I have the file modded but I don't use the B&N online store.
Developer To Do
Good topic. It would be great if one of this forums many great developers could solve this conundrum. Many of us who have rooted our NookColors would like to retain the rooted status but be able to use the B&N store without fear of unrooting the NC.

I had the file modded and I was able to use the store to buy books just fine.
I changed the file name on 12/17 to stop updates . I "Shop" several times a week. No issues at all.

SCIONTX and KitF, do you have titanium backup installed? In another thread, someone is thinking the problem might be due to installing and/or using titanium backup.
Explanation of how to avoid forced B&N Reset when using Titanium backup / restore

To the best of my knowledge, as is also discussed in the other thread on the B&N forced reset + Titanium ...
A B&N forced reset will occur if you restore an old login registration certificate for your device. This would occur if you make a full Titanium backup (including various system settings), de-register your Nook Color, (wipe, etc.), re-register (this creates a new certificate in on the Nook and in the B&N Shop itself associated with your B&N login), and then restore "too much" using Titanium.
The solution (so far) is to be very selective as to what you restore with Titanium ... i.e., I avoided restoring "anything" remotely system settings for B&N , whisper, shop, sync, etc.. There likely is only one "settings" to be avoided, but I don't know which one.
Side note: I also read that having a mismatch between your Google login and your B&N Login can confuse the B&N server and force a reset. This one does not make as much sense to me.
OK folks, please forgive me if the following questions have been answered already. I just need some clarification.
I recently side loaded apps to my NT,including Launcher Pro and Button savior so I can recal the NT launcher if I need to. I boot into Launcher Pro and I like the interface and ability to see all of my sideloaded apps in a grid view instead of having to do a search via the NT's launcher. So am I right in assuming that, technically, I have not rooted my NT? If this is the case, how do I avoid the OTA updates? As of last night,Dec 29th,I was still able to install apps and have them launch and run just fine. I really don't want the firmware update! Can someone just clarify the steps I need to take as I don't know if the work around discussed here applies to me.

Nook TABLET (NT) or Nook COLOR (NC)? They are different devices.
If you're able to install apps from the Market, it does sounds as if you've rooted properly. I blocked updates on my NC and my wife's NT using the SQLite database edit, and have not had any problems with recent updates.
I'm very interested in this topic as I'm preparing to noot my Nook Color. But I feel that I've missed something. How do you block updates "using the SQLite database edit"?
So I upgraded to 3.1 when the update was pushed over the air knowing I'd lose root. I haven't used my tab in a while because I use it mainly for school and I've been off for the summer. Fall semester is coming up and I want to re-root and I see there's now a method for it. Problem is, I still have superuser from before but it's not rooted. When I run the new apk and hit root, it stalls on extracting forever. When I hit unroot nothing happens at all. I've factory reset it but superuser is still present obviously, but I still can't root with the new apk. Any ideas?
have you downloaded Iconia Root from the market? Worked first time for me
I don't see any app called that in the market. I'm pretty sure that's the same program I'm using anyway. The icon is called Iconia Root. It's version 1.3.

Hmmmmmm.
Do you have Clockworkmod running? Can you use adb to delete the existing superuser apk and then try root again with Iconia root.
I am pretty worthless with using adb myself, but I would imagine using it to delete a file should be doable.
I recently updated my Iconia a500 to the lastest update(unrooted). Since then the honeycomb market first appears when i open it, however if I try to install an app it stays at waiting to install...if I go to my apps from the app it opens it in the pre honeycomb version which is presumably the phone version. After that the honeycomb version is nowhere to be found untill I reinstall it. What might be the solution to this?
Thanks in advance for your help guys.
Has your tablet always been stock and unrooted..
Did you install the new market on the tablet before acer updated your tablet to the new market.if So where did you d/load it from.. There is a market .apk on the internet that has something wrong with it that causes this.. It installs on your tablet. Not replacing the original Market app. This was asked alot back when the new market first came out.
you can go to where the aps are system/apps and see if there is more then one market app. delete them both .
i went into settings then privacy .untick the backup account and automatic restore data this stops google from restoring data files for both market apps .then find a Legit verson of the android market apk..
Do a search on google for this issue to get step by step instructions. I am writing this out of my memory and it could be a bit off.

Thanks for your reply, my tablet has always been stock and unrooted, and for as long as I can remember has had the honeycomb market interface. Under manage applications there are two instances of the android market, the honeycomb one which can be uninstalled (uninstalls itself when I open the older version also) and the older version which doesn't have the option to be removed only remove updates.
im guessing the one that you can remove is a app that you installed..
I suggest you backup your files. to sd card..
Go to
settings
Privacy ..
and at the bottom you will see factory reset.. this will reset the tablet to total stock and remove the apps that did not come factory installed..
this should fix this issue.. for some reason a update did not remove the old market app or you installed it not knowing or forgot you did so...
Thanks for your help was hoping there was some other solution....I'm considering rooting it and installing a custom rom like what i did with my HTC sensation... once again thanks!!!
unfortunatley this need ROOT privilages.
Download "Market 3.4.4.apk" install with any File explorer app.
It's tuff to make the Market find outdated apps sometimes!
Doubtful : maybe there is a way to have a "market 3.4.4" made into a .zip file, rename to "update.zip" and boot into your stock recovery and it will add in ROM.
Hi,
today my Tf101 (still HC 3.2) prompted me to install firmware update (I guess ICS).
I pressed Postpone(3) to 1 day and after 5 minute he re-prompt me; I (stupid like hom) re-pressed Postpone(2) and now I see Postpone(1)
I DON'T WANT to install ICS because I'm starting to a trip and I need the tablet is perfectly working like it is now !!
How can avoid and be sure that he auto-installs the update ? (and also that he continue to prompt me...)?
Do you know where is located and what's the name of the (.bin?) file that he downloaded from FOTA and he's ready to install ?
I would like to delete them (even if he would re-download) to be sure nothing happens.
Thanks in advance
Sandro
If you do a factory reset before update to ICS, you most likely won't have problems.
ICS is great, and did you only JUST get the update? It's been here for a couple of weeks now.
Being rooted may be the only way to stop it...(to change or delete files in system).

You do not want to restore hc Apps to ics. Just reinstall them..
It takes minutes to let google reinstall apps.....
In order to do it, you have to be rooted. Then install the Droidwall app, which enables Android's built-in firewall capabilities. I block everything from accessing the Internet by default unless I explicitly choose to give an app permission, which is "whitelisting." If you are fine with how your apps run pre-Droidwall, then you should do the opposite and allow Internet access by default unless you choose not to, which is "blacklisting." On some other Android tablets, the firmware updater is an entry by itself on Droidwall, which makes it easy to block. On the Transformer though, it is lumped with a bunch of other stuff in the entry labeled "Android System, Key Chain, Settings Storage, Settings, System UI, VPN Dialogs, App Backup, CMClient, DMClient, com.asus.keyboard, App Locker, ASUS Task Manager, Google Backup Transport," which means, in order to block the updater from checking for firmware updates, you have to block Internet access for all those other items as well. That happens to be okay with me. If it's okay with you, then go ahead and restrict that entry from accessing the Internet. The updater will then no longer be able to phone home and check if an update is available, and therefore it will always tell you that there are no updates available. If you want to reverse this, simply allow Internet access again for that Droidwall entry.
I think the main problem is : "out of Rooting your TF, there's no way not to update".
It is rather idiot as it's been quite clear the ICS updates are not as stable as one would want them to.
So why force every customers having a product that has been rendered unstable, when it worked smoothly before.
I do consider my TF far more stable under HC than ICS.
Freeze dmclient.apk if your rooted
Should work
kool
If you really don't want to root you can go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>All>DMClient>Clear Data and it will go away BUT it will come back once the app restarts and the TF checks for updates again & you'll have to repeat the process.
You could-

Freezing dmclient in Titanium Backup Pro or a similar app will keep updates from coming back. But you do have to root for it to work...
why can't you guys just press the back button to avoid the update?
Now, the question is, how to block the update prompt entirely?
New Android ver. 4.1 installed but I made mistake and uninstalled Netflix app. I tried to download new version of Netflix but system said it was already installed so it won't download it for me. Apparently, when I uninstalled Netflix it took out the app but didn't delete it from some app table or internal index that Android uses. How do I overcome this problem?

I'll take a wild guess that the Netflix app came with your tab pre-installed? If this is the case, it more than likely is located in /System/App. So to remove it, you will have to root your device, and get system RW access. Otherwise, it and the rest of the pre-installed bloat apps, will be there forever more.

I got lucky and found, I'm not sure how, a down-loadable new version for 4.01 that didn't have a problem with replacing the old version, if it was actually still there. So I am back in business. Thanks for taking the time to help. I'm lucky because I do not have any idea how to root the device.
