install CM7, its faster, better battery, and you shouldnt get the update becuase cyanogenmod has them blocked!

i had CM7 installed, and it caused LOADS of issues with loads of applications for me. kept getting the forced closed message, so i went back to standard. (which was a ballache in itself because i am pretty bad at this stuff)

[Q] Force Close when checking for system updates

After I rooted my SF I noticed that whenever i go to Settings and go into About Phone and check for System Updates I get this error
Sorry! The application settings (processcom.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force Close
is this something i should be worried about? At first i thought maybe it was because i had a custom rom or maybe a kernel but i have tried several rom and kernel combos just to be sure but i keep getting the same error. The rest of the phone has been working fine. I am currently using Superdark rom and stupidfast kernel.
This is my first Android phone so i am still learning. Thanks.
Pretty much all the custom roms for our phone have ota updates disabled which its why you get that error. Don't sweat it.

Thanks for the quick response Hatespawn. Glad i don't have to worry about it. Looking forward to the maintenance update, ksizzle9. Hopefully it'll address the gps issue.

Liberty Tools Corrupts Re-Engineered ROM!

Ok, well I installed the Re-engineered ROM a couple hours ago and got everything setup right. It was all working fine until I opened up Liberty Tools. After I did, my wallpaper changed to a green theme one of a girl. Liberty Settings were gone from the Settings menu. It was impossible to change my wallpaper.
Basically, Liberty Tools completely corrupted my whole install.
What is the deal here? If anyone can reproduce this let me know. It is like my whole phone was hacked.
If this was just a freak occurrence then that was odd as all get out. If the Liberty team deliberately did this, I would say they would have to be the most pathetic bunch of all the Android developers.
So, can someone install the "NEWEST" Liberty Tools on the Re-Engineered ROM and tell me what happens. Make sure to backup your system first though! It is a good thing I backed up Liberty right before installing re-engineered.

just dont update it and you should be good. =)
Liberty works beautiful for me on re-engineered. Its built on the base of liberty so there is no reason you should have issues. It might have been a bad install
I don't know the exact cause, but I had used quite a few of the features of the Liberty Toolbox on Re-Engineered, and had no issues.
Last night I was bored, so I started changing the themes.
And ... crash. Weird stuff was going on.
I tried to restore, and the file was corrupt. Another had a invalid MD5 Sum.
I then went to re-install the ROM ... corrupt file.
I then went to re-install Liberty ROM ... corrupt file.
I basically had to get an old backup of GummyJAR to get back going. Then re-downloaded.
I'm back on Liberty right now.
Have not gotten to the point of re-downloading Re-Engineered.
So ... the corruption I don't believe came from Team Liberty.

jRummy fixed almost all issues in the Liberty Toolbox that people were having, but to get those updates, you must be running Liberty and only that.
Want the real thing, use Liberty.

You guys don't understand. The toolbix deliberately corrupts the OS just upon opening the app for the first time. I didn't actually use it but only opened it up and gave it admin priviliges.
It made changes to my phone without my consent!
Pretty sleezy of kejar and jrummy. Ive never seen anything like it. I could understand them just disabling the downloading from anything off their server, but deliberately crippling my phone because I wasn't on Liberty is just horrible on their part.

Don't they say in the market don't download or use with out root and running liberty rom?
Plus. You yourself said you gave it superuser permissions... so you gave it permission to run as root. So you gave it permission to modify you're system.
-edit-
Yup it says just that, and a requirement is liberty rom.

Oh it happened alright.
First thing that happened was my wallpaper changed right away.
Second, hit menu and tried to hit 'wallpaper' and nothing happened.
Third, went into gallery to set an image as the background and it FC'ed
Fourth, noticed that 'Liberty Settings' was now gone into oblivion
Fifth, seeming my system was now corrupt, I had no choice but to revert back to the backup I just did of my Liberty install right before installing re-engineered
I wasted about 1.5 hours getting everything just how I wanted it. I don't care they disabled it to work with ROMs other than Liberty; I am just upset they deliberately screwed my system.
If they have a problem with that chingy guy, that is one thing, but I am just a user here.
Have you tried it more than once? Has it happened on anyone else's phone? Is it happening because you simply opened it? Is it because you tried to run a specific option?
Something happening one time without any testing does not call for this type of conclusion.

Nope. I never ever ever had anything like what happened here. The liberty toolbox literally, maliciously corrupted my whole system simply because it was not running liberty but rather re-engineered.
If another ROM besides re-engineered or liberty is running, the liberty toolbox simply won't work.
The latest build was specifically coded to CRIPPLE the re-engineered ROM.
I think that kejar and jrummy's ROMs should actually be pulled because they are malicious devs. If they did this, what else could they be doing to our phones???!!!???
It really makes one wonder.

There could be a memory leak on the latest GB update That uses too much processing power.
Try to limit your widgets on your homescreens or if you're rooted, try dc13's ROM (Ti-X Speedy) which I am currently using. no "loading" time. Only using 3 homescreens with widgets.
Yeah this really makes me angry. But the widget thing might be correct...

I talked to sprint last night and they said you need 60mb of free memory on the phone
This is a very common and incredably battery killing bug that came along with the new update. Its annoying me that I can't get my phone to last more than 5 hours on standby.
I am having this same issue on my wife's shift. I just bought it for her on Friday. Debating returning it for something else. She's driving me nuts about it. Is this happening to everyone with the update or just some phones? And has sprint/HTC acknowledged it and/or said they are working on a fix?

HTC set Android's memory settings to be *far* too aggressive on the lastest update. Load up the app "AutoKiller Memory Optimizer" and you can see this for yourself. These settings are what tells the OS when to start killing off background apps as free memory decreases.
Even without root, the app allows you to see what the settings are. With root, you can use the app to adjust the settings back to something more normal (personally, I like the settings from CM7). I'll be doing this the next time I try the rooted OTA.

Thanks again

I have been seeing this same problem, and am not rooted either. Since setting the last three numbers to 24, 28, 32 earlier today I have not yet seen Sense restart. Will post a follow-up if things change.

It will still happen if you run some memory-intensive apps (e.g. games). HTC's original settings were kind of ridiculous, IMO.
What were the original htc settings anyway?

slow downs

hey so my gf has a desire z mostly because I convinced her android is the way to go, and she loves it, but recently she has been frustrated because every once in a while, usually when she uses the default messaging app or widget, it will slow way down and/or freeze, and take a few minutes to sort itself out, I suggested try handcent cause it may clean that up, but since then it has continued to happen, any suggestions? thanks!

Reboot with pulling the battery out? Many apps on it?
If you're unsure whats causing the slowdown, I'd download Watchdog Lite and see what apps are taking up the most CPU/RAM and see if removing or fixing issues with these apps will change anything.
I haven't done anything extra for her to it, no rooting, all she has done is the ovta 2.2.1 update and download apps, just simple ones like backgrounds, schedules/notes, and games, and okay thanks I'll try downloading that app to see

When having that version of Android I had some slow downs when using animated wallpapers, they clogged the memory also until it froze. Using normal, steady backgrounds took care of it.
I also have advanced task manager installed (free from market), it has a widget, clicking on it frees memory and speeds up the phone.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I like the wallpaper idea but I have heard from many places that task killers use more battery cause most apps will just start up again, but if it stops the freezing maybe it's a necessary trade off
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Yeah, Froyo is supposed to be much better with ram management so task managers are not required. Its very likely to be a misbehaving app in the background.
Failing that, factory reset to rule out an failed ota.

Don't use task managers. They're unnecessary and like you said can hurt more than they help more often than not.
Check out an app like Watchdog, that doesn't kill anything it'll just show you if something is eating too much CPU, so you can remove or change it. Also, lots of messages or long long threads can slow it down too.
so I got her to use watch dog and she just texted me saying that it popped up and messaging was over the cs threshold, and I do think she has a ton of messages, I'll tell her that deleting them could fix it, thanks!

You can customize what the threshold is. I think its like 20% or 30% by default. Kinda surprising that very rarely happens. If she deletes all messages and it still happens I'm really not sure.
She has a desire z. Its sense slowing it down. Not android. I remember this happening to me when i use to have it. Root that badboy and slap cyanogen mod on it. I can guarantee you it'll be waaay faster, not to mention the battery life will be better.

While the Sense launcher is a bit laggy and resource hungry, it sounds like the OP has something going on far beyond just Sense. Sense itself does not cause the Messaging app to lockup for minutes, and it seems to be a problem that has developed over time.
My personal preference is "System Monitor". It doesn't kill anything and does everything watchdog and a little more. It costs tho

You were previously talking about flashing CM7. If the HTC SMS app is indeed the problem, you don't need to flash a new ROM to get away from it. Yes, the HTC SMS app is not great, but neither is the stock AOSP one. I've been using the stock Sense ROM for the most part since December, with Chomp SMS and see absolutely no slow down. Plus, I've tried CM7 and other ROMs, and there is no significant affect on battery life. If the OP's GF wants to stay on Sense, its really overkill to recommend ROM flashing. Its pretty apparent from the most recent posts deleting some messages will likely fix the problem.

5000 is a bit much. If its just a case of not being bothered to delete old messages (I have the same problem, but delete in the hundreds still) I could recommend the "Delete old messages" function which will automatically keep the thread down to size.

'process system not responding' every time i installed something

I am getting this message every time I installed something. Either click on Wait or Force Close makes no difference. The phone is running smoothly and fast. It is not like I have to wait a minute for the system to get back to work correctly.
Is there any way to prevent this message from popping up? or does anyone else have the same issue here? Thanks.

Do a full factory reset should help, I think that is the apps your have installed have some compatibility issues with your rom, try uninstall the apps one by one , to see if one of them make your phone unstable.
This only happen on froyobread.

Froyobread is the only rom I have tried... I didn't even try the stock rom.
So I guess I will just have to live with it.
Maybe it is also a signal to tell me not to install too many apps
I have already ~100 in my phone.
