There could be a memory leak on the latest GB update That uses too much processing power.
Try to limit your widgets on your homescreens or if you're rooted, try dc13's ROM (Ti-X Speedy) which I am currently using. no "loading" time. Only using 3 homescreens with widgets.
Yeah this really makes me angry. But the widget thing might be correct...

I talked to sprint last night and they said you need 60mb of free memory on the phone
This is a very common and incredably battery killing bug that came along with the new update. Its annoying me that I can't get my phone to last more than 5 hours on standby.
I am having this same issue on my wife's shift. I just bought it for her on Friday. Debating returning it for something else. She's driving me nuts about it. Is this happening to everyone with the update or just some phones? And has sprint/HTC acknowledged it and/or said they are working on a fix?

HTC set Android's memory settings to be *far* too aggressive on the lastest update. Load up the app "AutoKiller Memory Optimizer" and you can see this for yourself. These settings are what tells the OS when to start killing off background apps as free memory decreases.
Even without root, the app allows you to see what the settings are. With root, you can use the app to adjust the settings back to something more normal (personally, I like the settings from CM7). I'll be doing this the next time I try the rooted OTA.

Thanks again
Autokill memory optimizer change seems successful
I have been seeing this same problem, and am not rooted either. Since setting the last three numbers to 24, 28, 32 earlier today I have not yet seen Sense restart. Will post a follow-up if things change.

It will still happen if you run some memory-intensive apps (e.g. games). HTC's original settings were kind of ridiculous, IMO.
What were the original htc settings anyway?

This issue never happened to me. You could also open terminal and type: top
This command shows processes and cpu usage and it auto refreshes. Most busy processes are on top of the list.
I think pressing Q will exit it. Its built into the os.

I get lag. The worst problem is when I do this-
Go into an sms thread. Delete the entire thread. When the screen goes back to the sms list, the rotating 'wait' circle shows for about 5 seconds before refreshing the list. Happens every time. Even with 4 items in the sms view.

I havent had any lag so far... been using for a week now
HTCSense has crashed a few times for me and automatically restarted just fine, nothing lost due to this happening.
I am familiar with the typing lag because it happens on Xperia Mini Pro occasionally. Anyway, not happened on my Desire Z yet...
The only teeny-tiny lag I have noticed is when some of the widgets don't load fast, but that's due to them gathering the data from mobile/wifi. Doesn't slow down swiping left/right to other screen though.

Android is designed to allocate memory to tasks being used at hand, the other tasks are sitting idle and not using any memory at all. Task killers also drain your battery faster. Its google, they wouldnt make a OS that would have to use task managers to close things.

It's not the act of deleting where there is the lag on my phone. It is when the message list tries to re-draw...
Try simply rooting.. my phone got much faster simply by using Visionary+. Also flashing to the WWE rom cut long-boot times in half (or less). I think Bell's ROM just has issues.

The guys in the DesireHD had this same issue, and they found a fix by enabling USB debugging: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=826507
Failing that, you could always download Watchdog lite from the Market to see if it alerts a service using excessive CPU, that should point in the right direction.
I'm thinking of getting a Desire Z, so this is a little unnerving. Hope the above fixes it.

yeah it is nothing NEW,all it do is ,it summaraizes all the battery eating stuff at one place,so it becomes really easy for everybody to do everything from there rather than going to millions of settings to do the same,i still have 85% after 12 hours with moderate usage.

one way for sure, PC Companion and Repair!

Nope sorry, just made a Backup from all installed Apps and not Pre installed
P.S Here some Pictures of Battery Optimizer. Just found him out of curiosity 2 weeks ago ^^
Already had only 2 left when i found it ^^
I haven't this either and i just did a re-flash so all the apps are back and no "support" app at all :/
Ok, I found it in the thread of 'all 2.1 system apps'.
Here it is for whoever else wanted it.
Out of interest I tried to install on FreeX10 beta 4, but to no avail. What settings are you able to control? Is it like wifi/2+3G data/blue tooth on/off policies?
It's strange that this is so hard to find in 2.1 because 2.2 is the same way. There are many advanced settings hidden in the power control widget that have increased my battery life with 2.2 far beyond what I got with 2.1 optimized. Not to mention, I haven't come close to going over on my data plan for the first time, and no need to use APNdroid anymore. You would never know they were there if you didn't look for them. I wonder if this "hiding" is an attempt to run up our data plans and encourage battery sales?

If you're unsure whats causing the slowdown, I'd download Watchdog Lite and see what apps are taking up the most CPU/RAM and see if removing or fixing issues with these apps will change anything.
I haven't done anything extra for her to it, no rooting, all she has done is the ovta 2.2.1 update and download apps, just simple ones like backgrounds, schedules/notes, and games, and okay thanks I'll try downloading that app to see

When having that version of Android I had some slow downs when using animated wallpapers, they clogged the memory also until it froze. Using normal, steady backgrounds took care of it.
I also have advanced task manager installed (free from market), it has a widget, clicking on it frees memory and speeds up the phone.

I like the wallpaper idea but I have heard from many places that task killers use more battery cause most apps will just start up again, but if it stops the freezing maybe it's a necessary trade off
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Yeah, Froyo is supposed to be much better with ram management so task managers are not required. Its very likely to be a misbehaving app in the background.

Don't use task managers. They're unnecessary and like you said can hurt more than they help more often than not.
Check out an app like Watchdog, that doesn't kill anything it'll just show you if something is eating too much CPU, so you can remove or change it. Also, lots of messages or long long threads can slow it down too.
so I got her to use watch dog and she just texted me saying that it popped up and messaging was over the cs threshold, and I do think she has a ton of messages, I'll tell her that deleting them could fix it, thanks!

You can customize what the threshold is. I think its like 20% or 30% by default. Kinda surprising that very rarely happens. If she deletes all messages and it still happens I'm really not sure.

While the Sense launcher is a bit laggy and resource hungry, it sounds like the OP has something going on far beyond just Sense. Sense itself does not cause the Messaging app to lockup for minutes, and it seems to be a problem that has developed over time.
My personal preference is "System Monitor". It doesn't kill anything and does everything watchdog and a little more. It costs tho

You were previously talking about flashing CM7. If the HTC SMS app is indeed the problem, you don't need to flash a new ROM to get away from it. Yes, the HTC SMS app is not great, but neither is the stock AOSP one. I've been using the stock Sense ROM for the most part since December, with Chomp SMS and see absolutely no slow down. Plus, I've tried CM7 and other ROMs, and there is no significant affect on battery life. If the OP's GF wants to stay on Sense, its really overkill to recommend ROM flashing. Its pretty apparent from the most recent posts deleting some messages will likely fix the problem.

5000 is a bit much. If its just a case of not being bothered to delete old messages (I have the same problem, but delete in the hundreds still) I could recommend the "Delete old messages" function which will automatically keep the thread down to size.

I've tried many different roms such as jvo, jvh, jvp and jvq. I've tried darkys, juwes, gingerreal , f1, insanity and miui but they all have these problems after the phone has been 'up' for over a day. When I exit a game using home or back my launcher restarts.

I havent tried the stuff in this thread but it is interesting, and on the second page, there is a posted .apk that apparently solves it..
Like saphirrot said, if the launcher has a 'stay in mem' option, check it. I've done that with Launcher Pro and the launcher restart happens far far less.
It's just android freeing up ram for the game. It's a pain in the ass but better than not being able to run a game because of low memory.

Nothing is wrong. It's running out of memory. Android shall release background tasks if foreground tasks need the memory. Since Gingerbread, you can no longer force most things to stay in memory so those features are mostly useless these days. Should have kept to one ROM and asked your question in its thread. Too many things to suggest to tune it properly really. Uninstalling system apps you don't use and trying different kernels are your last options.

This is completely unacceptable then, you can't even multitask. And after the phone has been 'up' for over 12 hours you can't even keep the dialer in memory! There must be a way around this. A smartphone should not take over 3 seconds to open the dialer.

I have never seen this problem before, and since it so several I have to assume that if other people had it, they would have posted about it.
That means that it is either due to a problem with your hardware, or due to something you are installing/configuring. I would do a full factory default then add apps back very slowly, one by one, doing some basic testing in between. That way you may be able to isolate the problem.
If it still happens right after the factory reset, take the phone to a service center.

I would strongly recommend Go Launcher(free from the market) its very smooth and has MANY transitions animations that are very pleasing to the eye. App drawer seems to have zero lag with animations set to random. And I'm almost sure random uses the most resources. Or try another launcher.

... 1 thing i'm curious about is how laggy the lockscreen can be, either stock or widgetlocker. It seems i have to pull the slider halfway and leave it to slide back, to make the 2nd slide to unlock smooth. Strange.

Yep - Same problem here - Hate that laggy lock screen!
Doesn't matter for me after today though my GN is arriving tomorrow!!
For some weird reason on cm7 I can't download things. It keeps Saying it requires an sd card. Also parts of the keyboard stop working completely

In Cyanogenod settings there is an option for 16-bit transparency. It should give you the performance gain you are looking for.

Thanks it worked but my keyboard is still messed up and I don't have Google apps and I can't find out how to install them

try installing the google apps package through rom manager.
if you dont have rom manager (which you should - i think its standard on cm7)
find rom manager.apk if you can't find it and push it to your sd card install rom manager, then google apps, then a new keyboard thru market.

Go to Settings > CyanogenMod > Performance > tap "Ok" > Use 16bit Transparency
It limit the transparency rendering so to save resources and give back performance. (I hope to explane it right)
I've been using CM7 stable for about a week. I really like it, although I've just tried using it as a mass storage device and I'm not able to access my EXT or INT flash memory. After disconnecting from the USB, it will freeze my phones screen and I will have to do a hard reboot by pulling the battery to fix it. Anything I can do to fix this?

been using CM7 since original beta, and have never had this problem. i would suggest doing a complete wipe with Fastboot and then reinstalling CM7 to see if the problem persists, if it does then get a logcat and report it to the Atrix Dev Team.
