Does Nandroid back upp your apps and stuff and personal pictures and what not?

It does NOT backup /data/media. Which is everything you see mapped to /sdcard.
Kind of crazy IMO. I once did a full factory reset and lost all my /data/media because I thought I had a backup.

Titanium backup is what I would sugest
A nandroid backup will only backup the things you check off in the backup screen. By default nandroid will backup all the necessary files to boot back into a rom. The best way to backup applications is to use titanium backup, which will backup not only the application, but also the data from yhe application.

I've been searching here and other sites using Google and I'm still not sure about /data/media. Could it be considered non-critical?
I just got my tablet yesterday, haven't had time to customize much. If I had to revert to a nandroid backup without /data/media, would it just be a matter of re-entering the system settings I want and pulling my apps back down from Market?

Sorry, I got a pretty silly n00b question... but is Titanium Backup or any other backup/restore app needed, if you just do a backup/restore from the ClockworkMod Recovery too?

A recovery backup doesn't cover the apps you've installed, so without Titanium or the like you'll need to restore them manually.

This is wrong.
A Nand backup (recovery backup) through Clockworksmod DOES backup your apps. In face, it backs up EVERYTHING you have on your phone, aside from you SDcard. It makes a copy of your entire phone exactly as it is when you make the backup.
When you make a nand backup, be sure to mount your /system and /data beforehand or you could run into trouble. Likewise, mount your /system and /data when restoring.
As already stated, a recovery backup creates a full backup of your phones internal files.
Titanium backup should also be used.
Titanium is useful for backing up apps but more importantly it backs up your app data. This is a great feature if you change ROM's often as you can quickly restore your app data, thus restoring game scores, settings, etc.
You can also use Titanium to revert to older versions of apps should an update cause problems.

ah, thanks, so let's say I have a application that requires a activation code, and I switch from Fission to Liberty or whatever ROM, once switched, I can use Titanium Backup to restore my app, and I won't need to reactivate?

This is probably a really dumb question but how do I use the backups I've created?
When I flash a ROM that I don't like and I try to restore to an earlier backup I've created it is not working. It either says something about the MD5sum or just aborts in general...
What process do I take in order to restore the phone to an earlier backup?
And better yet, if I install a new ROM and don't want to go through the process of installing all my apps again is there a way to just restore my files from a backup?
You can do an advanced restore and restore only data to get your apps, etc. back. There is also titanium backup that is great for backing up and restoring between roms (the only way to restore apps when using a different rom... restore data from one rom onto another can cause serious issues).
If you're getting MD5 sum errors, the backups are being corrupted. So unless your messing with them on your sdcard, then there may be some bad areas on that sdcard and it might be time for a new one.

Wait so in order to keep my apps I can go to advanced restore and restore only data but it could cause serious issues? So basically it is possible but risky?
and normally should my restore points flash just like a rom when I go to "Restore"? do I need to wipe everything before I restore?
I did copy and paste them onto my computer so I had them in two places... maybe that corrupted them. Anyways a new, bigger, faster SD card is in the mail so that's kind of a coincidence.
a restore in clockwork is an image restore, so everything in that partition will be wiped anyways.
I did a full backup using cwm.
When I recover the backup, do I get everthing back, my apps and settings..?
Is it just like restoring a pc disk image..? Or do I need to use another backup to get apps and settings. Thanks

cwm backs up everything if you do a FULL backup

It does not backup /data/media folder.
You should also delete .android_secure.img from your backup set or a full restore will fail before it restores flexrom.

I get an "error backing up /data" every time I try a full CWM backup. I want to do a full backup before I wipe for a new Rom. I know there's an error on one file, but I don't know where it is. Is there another way to backup the files on /data?

I have the latest of Thor's, and have done a titanium backup for every thing else. But, I'm paranoid and want a backup before I wipe it completely.

I get the error on mine all the time. I just ignore it and haven't had an issue yet. (been too lazy to update my recovery, so wanted to see if it fixed the message)
Just stay with the 3 wipe method before you flash, and you will be ok Also, if you worry about leftover data, you can go to Mounts, and format them as well.
But, I typically do the 3 wipes.
Also, with Titanium, make sure you did not backup any system apps, then try and restore them to a new rom. Sure fire way to brick the device.
Generally it's useful for things like game data. The new market pretty much remembers most of the free apps you downloaded, and all of the paid apps.
I don't think I was quite clear in my original post. I need to backup the /data.img because I have a load of stuff I don't want to lose, and I don't know where everything is stored. Can anyone tell me what is stored (folders, etc.) in the data.img of a nandroid backup so I can maybe just copy it to my ext sd?
(I have a persistent adware/malware that I can't find/remove. My antivirus doesn't detect it. So I want to wipe it, and selectively restore apps without losing my data/media.)
every time civato update his rom a have to do all this procedure : -wipe all , factory reset , format and flexrom and if I update from FLEXREAPER R14 to FLEXREAPER RF1 i going to lose all my data??? (sorry for my bad english)
Use a backup program for your apps and backup to external sd card, backup downloaded data to external sd card.
Keeps all your data safe and intact.....easy peasy.

Why aren't you doing a Nandroid backup? That's by far the most convenient way to restore user data including all setup and homescreen settings. This is also the method Civato is recommending.
Such a nandroid backup is a backup performed with your recovery. Just do first a full backup, then do a full wipe and flash the ROM. After doing the start-up installations (wifi, google account), you are booting again into recovery. Then you are doing an advanced restore selecting user data (/data) only to be restored (resoring system and others would replace the new ROM by the old one). Then you get back all your apps and settings.
