i've searched for an answer to this question but most keyboard problems i've come across deal with the entire keyboard freezing or lagging and usually changing settings like pop ups and autocomplete resolve the issue.
my problem deals with individual keys freezing. when this happens, the rest of the keyboard functions as normal. usually closing and reopeneing the keyboard or pressing other keys will fix it but that's really annoying to have to do. the delete key and space key freeze the most but i've experienced it with just about every key. i've tried every different keyboard in the market and tried changing keyboard settings but the problem persists. i don't know where else to turn so i decided i would ask on here.
i posted this in a dev thread earlier because i originally thought it was a rom issue, but the issue has repeated on several different roms and other people have confirmed that they're experiencing the same problem. i'm not sure how widespread it is, but it's definitely something that i think needs to be addressed.
i'll appreciate any response so thanks for any help in advance
If it is across all the keyboards you try, maybe it is something with your screen? I had similar issues with my phone, where if I would have two fingers touching the keyboard on different keys, it would flip out, and sometimes lag. I am currently using the HTC_IME keyboard and I no longer have issues. Btw my phone is an optimus v. Hope I helped. Cheers.

I have the same exact problem. And you're right on, my delete key will stop responding a lot of time. Especially when I long press it to delete words quickly.
I have used like 5 different keyboards with the same problem. This happens to every ROM EXCEPT Royal Ginger 2.1
And I have no idea why RG2.1 is the only cure...

thanks for the quick response. and yeah i'm beginning to think it might be screen issue. if i unroot it and return it to stock and it still happens would t-mobile or htc replace it?
also, is the HTC_IME just the stock HTC keyboard?

They might replace it, but I wouldn't count on it. They'd probably factory reset it to see if that works. HTC_IME is a modded keyboard found here on XDA, it is highly themeable, but I use it for its precision and its multitouch functionality.

Since you are running HTC sense, you need not install clicker.
Hope this helps.

While there are modded versions of HTC_IME out there (such as jonasl's), HTC_IME is also the name of the stock keyboard that comes with all Sense/mySense ROMs.

You are right, but it doesn't change the fact that it is a damn fine keyboard I swear it is the best I've used to date.

I have seen a few people saying that darchs roms have virtually no keyboard lag compared to the sprint builds. Has anyone come up with a good solution or app alternative in the sprint 2.1 roms to reduce keyboard lag. I love the new roms but the lag is slowly eating away at me. I must have gotten spoiled.
Yes, I agree. Perhaps it has something to do with the voice input? The keyboard was soooo smooth on DC1.

can anyone confirm that the older keyboard is faster? I'll flash that ****er in a heartbeat if it is. I might try swipe too, I see that swipe light link up, looking pretty tempting.
The new XDA-modified keyboard definitely has more lag than the stock HTC keyboard.

Actually no. Both keyboards gave me ridiculous lag in the new 2.1's. However, ever since I applied a new Rosie theme through MetaMorph, believe it or not, I have little to no keyboard lag now.
Well I did notice that the new keyboard lagged very bad, so i ended up going back to the stock keyboard. It still has some lag, but it is noticeably faster than the new one.
Turn off any kind of feedback (vibration and sound) if you have not done so already.
with all types of feedback off, I still lag on the new keyboard. I did slightly on the old one, but this is noticeable.
I agree, the new, updated keyboard is significantly laggier. And smiley's and the voice to text button (which isn't even very accurate). I would obviously be ideal is someone could come up with a solution to make the new one less laggy.
In the mean time, does anyone have a good tutorial for switching back to the old keyboard?
Give me a minute or so and I'll have a batch script that'll get the new one back for you... You DO have the old keyboard, right? Or do you need that too?
Batch script to reinstall old keyboard
Hey. Here is the batch script as promised. Make sure you put the script, as well as the old HTC_IME.apk in the SAME DIRECTORY that ADB is located. If you need the old HTC_IME.apk, you can google for it or find a ROM, extract it, then go to /system/app and copy it out.
Hmm, now that it was mentioned, 1.0 did have almost no lag with the keyboard. I am back running 1.5 right now. Waiting for OEM 2.1.
i agree. this keyboard lag is pissing me off. i can't take it.
if there a way to allocate some resources to the keyboard. i don't use the vibration but i do use the sound. it makes me know that i pressed something and makes my feel more secure when i am pressing another button so the sound is a must for me.
Flipz put a zip on the first page of his fresh Rom. I flashed it a little while ago. It's a little bit faster, not a ton though. I'm sure someone will have it running quick soon enough.
can you explain this keyboard a bit more???
i would like to try it out if possible. i like the smileys but i only used it twice and i like the voice command but i only used to to show it off.
I use shapewriter, and it's just as quick as it was on any other rom, even stock. and I can type (well, shape) much faster
Hi guys
Yes.. there is a bad lag...
I found a small fix
there is a "pop up" setting in keyboard setting
it is set to 750...change it to a lower setting. I have mine on 300.
Also change the vibrate length to 15 and enable it..
This helped my lag... but itis not gone!

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong location, but my Swype no longer auto spaces correctly. Rather than adding a space every word, it has started to add a space every 2 words. I now have to hit the space bar after every word I type. I have reinstalled Swype and it still has not fixed the problem. I have done a search on XDA and the net and still cant find a solution. Any thoughts from you guys?
I have the same problem. It's what made me stop using it. The only way mine would fix (and I know this sounds weird) is to delete all my messages. I moved on and now I'm using Resco Keyboard. Much better than the stock kb.
Yeah I ended up doing a hard reset because I was having so many problems with the phone. Now everything is back to normal. I might check out Resco Keyboard.
Why don't you switch to the latest version of Swype? It's great!
v3.19.20.20.6343
There is a small issue with Auto Spacing not working with HTC Messaging and Twitter. That can easily be fixed here.
Believe me, there is no on-screen keyboard that holds it's own in a contest with Swype. This thing is what got me off Hardware Keyboards.
swype never works for me!!! haha

Not sure of this is helpful but I find smart keyboard pro (market) far superior to the stock keyboard although it still looks like stock.

I hope this gets figured out
You can turn swype off by changing the input mode. Just go into a spot where you can enter a message, do a long press, and then click on the input button. Its not the same keyboard as on the G2, but I prefer it to the swype keyboard.
I have the smart keyboard pro app and have it turned off. Mine makes me hit done then send when trying to send a message, and I'd rather not have the extra keystroke.
Sorry for not knowing: but is there a reason it doesn't work when you simply side-load the stock 2.2 keyboard? Appmonster shows that it installed, but I cannot load the keyboard at all.
Any ideas?
I'm running Tiamat 2.0 and it was rebooting randomly so I installed the 2.01 version. Then wifi quit working. Wiped and reinstalled 2.0 and wifi started working but now autocorrect doesn't work! Any suggestions?
I wish this worked as well as my wife's Transformer!

You're kind of thrashing around trying to fix things by reflashing roms, but some of these problems you are having are known issues with simple fixes---if you'd just read the threads for the Roms you are flashing, you'd know that random reboots are mostly caused by setting the WiFi sleep policy to anything other than NEVER in settings. Hammerhead Rom had a fix for that in it but maybe it doesn't work for everyone.
Also the stock browser and stock keyboard can act buggy sometimes-so either download a different browser/keyboard from the market to try out (there some really good ones) and/or re-boot on occasion, just to refresh the system. It seems the keyboard gets laggy without regular reboots and maybe that has also affected the auto correct, although that could be due to something else altogether. I doubt that it's Rom related though.
Good luck solving your problems.
Thanks...haven't had much luck searching these forums. I have downloaded other keyboards but that hasn't solved the problem. It now appears that the dictionary is empty. When I turn on the option to display suggestions as I type, I see only names of people in my contact list. So...now I search for that solution...or I'll just flash another ROM... I just don't have the time to research every problem I have had and in my experience newer ROMs fix most of the issues I've had anyway.
Still a problem!
So nobody else has seen this problem? I can recreate it every time!
I restored my user dictionary from a backup and now I can see the words that should be autocorrected in the preview line above the keyboard. However, when it underlines the correct word and I press the spacebar...where it used to select the underlined word, it now ignores it and does not perform the autocorrect even though it knows what it should do...
This is driving me crazy now! Suggestions?
Thanks.

Reflash from stock. or upgade to tiamat 2.1 hammerhead.i think there is a system app deleted on your xoom.
Hello everyone !
I have a big issue since I switched to the CM 10.2.
when I am typing something (on any chatting software for example), each time my phone has a notification and/or any activity, my phone keyboard lose focus and vanish.
It is really super annoying when typing something and the keyboard vanish 5 times in a sentence, simply because my phone seems to refresh something... This issue happens mostly on the stock CM keyboard, I haven't tested so much the other ones, but it seems to happen with them too. I have uninstalled many program, updated my CM so many times, but nothing change
Does someone have the same issue, or any solution ?
Thanks a lot
Edit : Solution found by eksasol, scroll down a bit to find it

I cannot really understand that the keyboard loses focus and vanishes.. I have never seen something like this. Try to install Google Keyboard from Play Store to see if this happens too.

I have similar issues to that, I deleted the AOSP LatinIME.apk and libjni_latinime.so first, then install Google Keyboard, by flashing it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012857
I also found that when you do that and not clear AOSP LatinIME's app data before rebooting, the Google Keyboard somehow takes in some of the AOSP keyboard settings and become theme-able by the CM themes, normally it isn't. Pretty strange.
Also just in case you haven't, make sure to do a factory reset and wipe /system partition when you update to a newer CM version.

After a day of test, apparently it works !! Thank you very much !!!!
I found out that the reason the gesture typing for AOSP keyboard is crashing possibly because it its lib file doesn't support gesture, so you need to replace it with the lib from Google's Keyboard.
So extract the Google's lib located in its APK in the 'lib\armeabi-v7a\ folder and rename it as libjni_latinime.so and put it in "/system/lib", overwritting stock.
Also contrary to what I previously said, it's not a good idea to put Google Keyboard into /system/app as I find it makes it unable to update for some reason.
