I discovered this as I was following someone else instructions that didn't quite work and then messing up my phone to where my "com.android.phone" was failing but I was able to find the way for it to so I do not take full credit for this at all and if this has been known I do apologize. This mod does require root explorer (or similar app) and you need to be rooted.
1a. open root explorer and go to system/etc/motorola/com.android.phone/defaults.xml
1b. Long old "open in text editor" change "" to true
2a. Back out to root of phone then data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs and repeat step "1b" on "_has_set_default_values.xml" and " Settings.xml"
2b. Make a copy of " com.android.phone_preferences.xml" within that same folder
2c. Open copy file in text editor and repeat step "1b"
2d. Change file name of copy to " com.android.phone_preferences.xml.bak"
3a. Reboot phone
Now when you go into settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks you will be able to select whether you want 2G, 3G, or automatic which selects 4G. If anyone has trouble or anything PM me and I'd be more than happy to walk you through.
Oh and this should work on froyo and GB
*********************************
Looks like this does open the ability to select 2G or 3G selecting either or does nothing. I will continue to look into these files to see if I can make this work
*********************************
I got this far but now Im stuck. The selection can be made but the actual band change isn't occurring. If anyone much have some insight let me know and I'll update the OP.

Since the power control widget is a built in app this tweak unfortunately does not affect it. And since my knowledge is nowhere near a devs I wouldn't be able to make a rom with a widget that supports this mod.

How do I know if I'm really on 2G?
Hi, I have already changed its. But when I reboot the phone. All file in data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs are return to the original.
Can you suggest to me for solve this?
Thanks,
Sorry guys I just edited my instructions. You need to edit the .bak file for "com.android.phone_preferences.xml" because the system auto resets to the .bak file for this one so you're tricking it into reseting into the modded file

Thanks, I'll try it.

Once done correctly (instructions were w bit off sorry) you will be able to select 2G as seen in my screen shots

I too struggled a lot to find how to enable this and i installed navalynt's πCRUST v0.3 rom couple of days ago which had this feature enabled, so maybe it has been mentioned somewhere. Anyway, thanks for sharing!
It works on atrix 2.
Does this has permanent effect?
Thanks

This is a fix for people who are running WM 6.5 and are having the problem stated below.
Your WIFI automaticly turns off when u put your device into standby and wont reconnect instantly after you have turned it back on. you have to go to comm manager and manually turn it on and off.
this will fix that so when u turn on your device again, it will connect to your network automaticly without you doing anything
First step. Use a mobile registry software and go to the following
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\Parms
2) create a string Value "EnableAutoConnect" (without the " )and set it to 1
3) set "allow suspend" from 1 to 0
4) restart your phone and now you should not have anymore problems with the wifi.
Hope this helps all of you and also let me know if you are having any problems
Value Type
Hey
I am not well read on reg editing and i was wondering, while creating the new value what do i set the "value type" drop down menu to.
Cheers mate
the value type should be string
Also i would recommend you to use the mobile registry editor because all you need to do is to have your phone synchronized and edit it from your pc.
Hope this answered your Q's. if you have anymore questions let me know

Ok, I have started Mobileregistryeditor,
- right click on param,
- create new string 'EnableAutoConnect'
- fill in '1' as value
- press ok and get error 'acces denied'. Active sync is working
WM65
.NET3.5
It's what i am finding. I will try. Thank you, shayan
I didn't have this problem. i really don't know what to do. i checked it again and worked fine. it could be the rom you are using.
It doesn't work for me either, same message.

Dear shayan.k,
I did as you explained but it didnt work and i still have this problem.
Can you plz help ...
Just an FYI..
I'm using a Tilt 2. In fact, I'm configuring about 30 of them. And maybe 1/4 of them had this problem. It seems to be completely random. I havne't figured out how to fix it. All my phones seem to be exactly the same. I did have some different hardware revisions, but they didn't line up with the problem. I contacted HTC, they said they don't support registry changes.
WTF?
this isnt working for me...although im not sure im creating the string properly...
NOT
"DWORD" ? right? a string? and then just pop a 1 in there?
could u maybe make a screenshot of your 2 strings? so i know what it should look like?
sorry to all the people here.i have been really busy and haven't been checking my posts. this is for WM 6.5 with sense 2.1 that wont connect automatically. now that we have Wm 6.5 with sense 2.5. this hack is no longer needed.
+ Aman's sense 2.5 is faster than 99% of all the other Roms out there, especially the prime 3. if u can i would recommend u to try that if u have Hspl installed.
Sorry for this
I'm using flipz 1.56 RUU and for some reason, when it tells me to connect the phone to the PC, it says it cannot be found. I usually use a MAC to connect my Hero and all sorts of stuff, and I just found a PC to be able to unroot. What seems to be the issue? I know the phone is connected because I can look at it's folders and such.

I'm having this EXACT same issue... But, if you can look at its folders, go into the notifications and set it to "charge only" and make sure USB debugging is enabled.
You need to install HTC Sync on the PC in order to use the RUU.

Grrr...oh well unrooting I stay
Am about to unroot so I can take my Hero in to sprint, I have dust under the screen. Anyone want to point out the best (easiest) way to unroot?
I seen a post where it could be done by just sdcard, would that or using the kitchen be the best way to go?
I am running a 2.1 ROM.
Thanks!

Method 1 is dead simple
Just 5 steps?? WoW
I looked for a little bit today at work and could not find anything this easy. LOL
Anyone tested this?
1. Download the following file: http://www.multiupload.com/Q3RMV5MTRF
2. place in /root of SD card
3. Reboot phone into HBoot mode, by holding Volume Down
4. Press action (the trackball) when prompted
5. Reboot phone
while i havent done it, so cant confirm, the unroot from sd does seem to be the most foolproof way to do it. all their going to look for is the correct recovery.img and stock feel, so it only makes sense
Cool, Thanks!! I am going to give this a try (15 mins before I run in to sprint) I am going to hate to go with about my custom rom and add the added stuff I get with root!

I phone reboots and when I try to go to HBoot so I can nandroid a backup I have I get this screen.

when i first start the app it asks for superuser permissions i allow and check the allow always button. so i'm 98% sure i'm good there. i have no idea why this will not work. any ideas??
Ive never had this problem, only when my phone was not rooted..
Hmm.. have u tried the regular stuff? Uninstall, reinstall, reboot, etc?
*This was posted from my Evo 4G using Tapatalkpro! Great app, if you want to browse and post through many dfferent forums*
Are you sure that you uninstalled the previous versions before you installed new ones? And if you installed a rom with it already installed, then used something like Titanium Backup and it restored Wireless tether, that can cause issues
yessir, i've uninstalled/installed every version of wifi router from oldest to current. i've also tried reloading my ROM 3 times with a different release each time.
the bizarre part is when i first got my evo i used unrevoked until i learned about full rooting and until then, my wifi router worked flawlessly. it's when i did the full root and nand unlock and installed OMJ's rom(with wifi built in) that the app quit working.
try this......
If you have root permissions, but still cannot start tethering, it may be an issue with either the tethering binaries or your tethering settings. From the main tether screen, try going to Menu->Setup->Menu->Reinstall binaries/configs.
when i hit menu from the main tether screen i get Settings, Access Control, Show Log and About.
So menu, then setup, once setup is open hit menu again and the option will pop up.let me know if it works.

Update your SuperUser Permissions app. ROM Manager has that, and you can find it on here.

i have FINALLY found a working way to manually update your mytouch 3g device! all the other methods have broken links and not working SAPPIMG's, so i have to files that will update you to froyo 2.2.1! so you can skip that google activation setup if you reset your phone
with the following files, it should be named update.zip what you do, is put it on the root of your SD card (not in any folders at all), then you turn off the phone, and hold the home and end (power) keys until a warning triangle and a phone appears, then you tap home and end (power) again and it should bring up a menu, and one option should say, update.zip select that option and select it with your trackball then it should show a loading bar and it should restart your phone a couple times. then when it turns on again, put the 2nd update file on your SD card, power it off and repeat the process above.
again, it should be named update.zip if not, rename it to update.zip then do the same as you did with file one, then viola! you're mytouch 3g is now running android OS 2.2.1 enjoy!
if you're updating to skip that annoying google sign in thing, because you don't have a mobile network, then this IS for you! after this update, when it tells you to tap the android, tap it, hit skip, then between create and sign in on the google page there should be a skip button, that will skip the google sign in!

Greetings,
first of all, since this is my first guide, please be kind and for another thing, english is not my mother tongue so pardon eventual spelling errors.
I'am sort of a "flash-o-holic" and one thing that drives me nuts is everytime i flash a new rom, i have to reenter my saved WiFi-networks including their passwords. And since these passwords are really long, about 16 to 26 characters, it's a very tedious process.
But a found a solution or workaround, that i want to share with you.
First, grab your wpa_supplicant.conf file, usually it's saved under /system/etc/wifi/ (you can either pull it via adb or copy it with a root explorer to your sdcard) a save this file on your PC.
Now download your desired rom (if you haven't already), open it with a zip tool (i use 7zip and so should you ), navigate to /system/etc/wifi/ and replace the wpa_supplicant.conf file.

}
And that's it!
You can just flash it like normal via custom recovery.
Worked for me everytime. (=
Nice, I never thought about that. I usually restore this using Titanium Backup, but that requires getting TB onto the phone first. With your method wi-fi will be available imediately after booting.
EDIT: Except... that file is mostly empty. For me the file with my wifi data is /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
...or you can just backup your data using Google. it restores your WiFi passwords
