If you are planning to return or exchange a Nexus S at BestBuy they probably will check your phone for root before taking it in. I'm not sure how they are doing it, but when I went in to replace my Nexus due to the reboot problem and they checked to see that it was updated to the latest version, and then they checked if it was rooted.
Before I went in to return it, I factory reset my Nexus, wiped everything, flashed stock Gingerbread, and stock recovery, and then relocked the bootloader using "fastboot oem lock"
I made the mistake of flashing the stock rom here on XDA, but I didn't realize that it had superuser and noAds installed with the rom. I guess the clerk at the mobile department saw that superuser was installed and told me there were no returns with rooted phones. Who knew they were that smart?!?
I didn't see what he was doing with it, but I know he at least checked to see if there was superuser on the phone.

LoL.... thanks for the tip, but this shouldn't surprise anyone:
http://www.bestbuymobile.com/article/pitfalls-jailbreakingrooting-your-phone (I know much of what they say here is plain wrong )
I can't believe you went through all the trouble of doing a factory reset and then you flashed a rooted ROM!!! Derp! Bummer dude!
They found out you rooted your phone because it had.... "Superuser" on it. You just answered your own question
They didn't check mine when I returned my nexus s for a dead pixel. All they did was put it in the box and hand me over a new one. Guess it depends on the clerk if he knows what rooting means. Lol.
Edit: restoring is a must tho. Better safe than sorry.

My phone got dropped last night and half of the screen has gone black. I need to send it back.
My plan was: Install stock rom then unroot.
I was on Cyanogen RC2 and I downloaded and tried to install both files from the "Stock Restore" section of the Resource Bible but both times, after I wiped everything and flashed the appropriate file, it takes a few seconds (way way less than usual when flashing a new ROM) and then says it's done. After I reboot, I'm still with Cyanogen. What is the deal and how do I actually get this thing back to stock?
Also, what does Tmobile do if you send back a phone that's been rooted and has a different ROM on it?
I think it depends on if you are trying to get warranty service or an insurance replacement. If you are using your insurance, I don't think it matters what you have done to your phone...insurance is insurance. They won't do warranty service on a rooted phone though. I would wait for some others to chime in, but it might be a good idea to just finish it off and get an insurance replacement.
Wait, are you trying to flash the pcxxxx.zip (can't remember the rest this early) through recovery? If so it wont work I don't think you need to boot into bootloader and it will find the file flash it and your unrooted.
Hope that helped,
Nic

It's the PD15IMG.zip file.
How did you root your phone. Did you Gfree or root.sh or visionary? If you did Gfree you have to go back to that thread and follow the process to reverse it, if you did the others you just drop the PD15IMG.zip file on the root of your sdcard, boot into bootloader, let it load the zip and follow the prompts.
This is how you get it done

Well, Tmobile sent me another since it was only a few months old and under hardware warranty. The issue I have now is, the screen won't come on at all for me to get it back to stock. Will they see that and honor the warranty or will they fix it, see that it's rooted and not honor it?
Any encouraging words?
First off, let me explain what's happening. Just by my post title you are probably thinking, use the search button. I have and will, but my situation might be a little different.
I had unlocked my phone, rooted it and installed cwm in the past. A friend of mine came over this past weekend and offered to install a custom rom on my Atrix as he did with his and he would show me what to do to update it, restore, or try different roms later. Well I had to leave for a hour and while I was gone he messed something up. He had then essentially returned my phone to stock. It's no longer rooted and when I start my phone it no longer says unlocked. Do I need to go through the unlock process again or can I just root and install cwm? Can anyone tell me where I should start?

Have to flash pudding again. Then install cwm and play from there. Most ROMs here are pre-rooted, so no need to root anything.
Thank you. That's what I will do.

Since Asus seems to have fixed the issue for the c4 serial numbers but not the few of us on c3, I'm assuming we're somewhat on our own. I don't expect asus or any devs to solve this issue(fingers crossed none the less). So I started calling asus phone support on a regular basis, I explain I'm stuck on the .17 firmware and I don't receive any ota updates. This usually leads to them telling me to update manually, to which I play the dumb computer user, "I shouldn't have to do all this complicated stuff just to get regular updates" or sometimes I said I bought this tablet instead of a computer. Mind I avoided mentioning that I tried to unlock. I always mention that I know that the issue goes beyond myself and asus solved it for the c4 users. Just today they finally caved and offered to repair it. All I have to do is pay for one way shipping to the service center. I assume they will simply exchange it though I could be wrong.
tl;dr: If you can't update and you get a network error when trying to unlock, call tech support, if they don't help, politely ask for a supervisor to show you're serious.
I also want to ask for some advice, I rooted the tablet and obviously installed the unlock apk. So if I factory reset will it be noticed? I would hate to send it in for nothing.
Factory reset should get rid of all traces of root, and since the Asus factory reset erases the SD card, the unlock app will be gone, too. Just to be sure, after the reset, use the Asus file explorer, and check /system/bin and /system/xbin for a file called "su". I think factory reset erases everything, though.

No it doesnt get rid if root it just deletes superuser which you must download again from market

He's not trying to reroot. He wants to unroot, in which case he just needs to get rid of /system/bin/su.
Yep I know but I just mentioned that factory resets do not unroot

If I'm rooted without superuser installed will they notice? I always thought rooting was essentially getting superuser properly installed in the root directory. But I'm certainly not the expert.

If there is a someone checking the tablet they will find out. If not then they wont. I don't know if they check though so it's worth a try. but if you want to be certian you can always reflash the stock rom or unroot using the supersu app (or something like it).

You also need to remove the su binary from either /system/bin/su or /system/xbin/su.

I renewed my at&t 2 year contract on Sept 5th and upgraded to an s4. The phone has given me nothing but problems from the moment I first touched it. Long story short is that im taking it back to the store tomorrow and returning it. I called the store today and the girl on the phone basically said that since im still within my 14 days it will be a straight across trade for a new s4. I didn't mention to her that the phone is rooted and debloated. When I first received the phone it wasn't running the MF3 firmware. I unlocked and rooted the phone and installed a couple different roms trying to eliminate the near unusability due to lag and freezing. (I Know I should have just returned the phone immediately) I ended up soft bricking the phone while flashing custom firmware... So I used odin to get back to the original stock firmware, then did the at&t MF3 upgrade and rooted. Question- I know this is doubtful, but does anyone know of a way to restore the MF3 firmware to stock? If not, what should I do to get the phone as close to stock as possible? I was thinking I could reinstall all of the AT&T bloat from the playstore, turn them back into system applications via titanium back up and the uninstall SuperSU. The current device status under about device is listed as "Official"...

Thanks for the reply! Do you think I would absolutely need to do that before taking it in for exchange, or do you think restoring the bloat and uninstalling SuperSU would be sufficient. BestBuy is kinda out of the way for me but I would do it if it was absolutely necessary...Thanks

Yea if it still says official under device status you're fine. Uninstall all rooted apps like greenify, superSU, titanium backup, etc... Make sure you defrost/enable any freezed/disable apps just in case.
When you go in tomorrow, stay positive and act as if nothing happened.

I took the phone in yesterday and got a stubborn rep who wanted to trouble shoot and blah blah blah. She took the phone in the back. When she came out she said all the phone needed was a new sim. I said no I want a new phone. So she said to come back tomorrow when the manager is there. Whatever she did to the phone caused the custom status to return. I had official status upon entering the store. Dont know how that happened. Im off to att to see if I can trade it in today.

Sounds like what I went thru. Brought my new phone home and accidently updated to MF3 without knowing I screwed myself in the process. Returned 2 days later complaining of random reboots and sod's. They tried to troubleshoot my phone and told me a restore was needed to get my fon right. Told them if they don't replace my S4 with a new one I'll cancel the contract right on the spot.
After about an hour of their blah blah blah they gave me a brand new 32gb on MDL and I'm happily rooted now on CM... I'm liking this phone a lot now!

Yesterday I took the phone into BestBuy to have them flash it with MF3 to try and get rid of the custom status and boot screen. They looked at me like I was speaking Chinese when I asked them to do this in the phone dept. Even the geek squad had no idea what I was talking about. They said they had no way to reflash the phone. All they could do was restore the phone within the settings...UHG!! So no luck there on going back to official status. I found instructions here in the forum that work like a charm for going back to official status and getting rid of the custom boot screen. I used theses steps. All thanks go to Senior Member - ou812bkewl
1. Re-root again using the same method you did before for MF3, then:
--a) Reboot, update SuperSU app and it's binary
--b) Reboot again, verify device status is back to"Official"
--c) Reboot again, verifying that, this time, the boot screen is back to normal again
2. Download a file manager app in the Play Store called "Total Commander" and enable "Root functions everywhere" in its settings.
3. Navigate to a folder called "/system/xbin"
4. Delete ONLY files in that folder with the word "busybox" within its filename or symlink path. You should end up with three files left. I did. Two of them are SuperSU related. DO NOT DELETE ANY OF THEM!
5.Open SuperSU and, in its settings, select the "Full un-root" option. Once SuperSU closes, reboot.
When you reboot, wait a full minute and check on device status. It should still say "Official" and you will be fully un-rooted.
So im completly unrooted and official...Im off to the AT&T store shortly to try and exchange this thing...wish me luck!

I made it to the att authorized dealer where I bought the phone. The manager was totally cool and exchanged the phone for me no problems. The new phone came with the MDL firmware as well as the first. This phone was not buggy and laggy out of the box like the last one. I updated the firmware to the mf3 build and decided to leave it unrooted until there is an unlock and restore method for this build. This phone is working great and having no problems. I'm pleased

I hope you don't ever want to install a custom rom. Since you did that, you will likely never be able to.
I'm not really worried about. I pretty much enjoy a stock experience. I have two nexus 7 tablets for hacking and playing with mods. I use this phone for my business and I'm just after a straight forward experience. If there's ever an app that I want that requires root I can always root this firmware. And I would be surprised if this bootloader stays locked forever.

I tried to tinker with my Nexus 4 in an attempt to try and back it up before installing Android 5.0. Up until getting the notification for the OTA update I never once tried to tinker with ROM's or messing with Root. The phone was never tinkered with.
However when I got the OTA update request I tried to back up the operating system so that if the OTA update to Android 5.0 went wrong I could turn back time and put the original Android 4.4.4 back on.
I tried the Cynogen Installer but it did not install correctly, as advertised. My phone sort of reverted back to Factory Settings and I did get the request for the OTA update. However when I downloaded the OTA update, it never installed. Instead I got the Android Robot icon on his back with the exclamation mark saying "error". And that was it.
When I rebooted the phone, I never once received a further OTA update.
How do I revert my phone back to pristine condition so that I can get the OTA update to allow my phone to go from Android 4.4.4 to Android 5.0 or even 5.1?
I am worried about messing things up and ending up with an expensive brick.
Cheers

Hello
It's taken me a week or so to read the How-To-Guide in your link. It was quite tricky to follow and understand as it had one or two bad links for stuff needed.
Anyhow, I read it a quite a few times before plucking up the courage to Flash my phone.
And, I have to say that once I got my head around putting and extracting everything into one folder on my desktop computer and then opening a terminal within that folder it all went like clockwork. The only small hick-up was when my phone showed up 8Gb of storage rather than actually having 16Gb.
On the whole, I am very impressed and happy with the outcome.
Thank you

Glad you got it working. If you still have the storage issue go into the stock recovery and clear cache then do a factory reset. That should get you back to 16gb.
