No need for Root!!! - Galaxy S II General

Ok please dont start flaming me, its just my opinion after all
I received my first SGSII 6 weeks ago, and as flash addict (because of my previous sgs), I started to itch and I had mucsle cramps and my mouth drooling. this was 2 weeks after
From that moment I realised that I have to start over rooting my device & then flashing it (to get my daily fix). I did my homework for 2 days (thx to the great devs and the wonderful community here) & then rooted it. the experience is easy and straight forward.
2 days after I started flashing different awesome roms, all of them r great with very solid form factor. However, my phone front speaker was not clear and after asking here i found that I need to replaced it (special thanks to JJe who is dedicated to help)
My experience
After receiving a new phone and playing with it for around 2 wk now, I was able to realise that the advantages in rooting+flashing the awesome SGSII are very marginal, in contrast to the old sgs. In fact this device has cured my addiction, for now and im having a real life again
yes, I miss titanium, CWM, the beautiful theming of the new roms, file explorer, quick reboot, gps aids and few others. Nevertheless, the device is fast, snappy with crisp experience out of the box.
My advice
1- Dont listen to people who r *****ing about the phone all the time because this phone is almost perfect but not perfect though.
2- Dont, I repeat Dont root+/-flash ur device unless u reached the point of understanding the advantages of doing so
Disclaimer :
I held no responsible what so ever if I caused u any pain by reminding u with ur addiction

Second.
The stock Touchwiz UI has a LONG way to go to match the aesthetics and usability of MIUI or CM.

Generally pretty damn true.
But you forgot the best reason ever to root, because you can!

The advantages of rooting imho are: cwm, titanium backup, access to the conf files, adfree, and some more. I don't care about custom roms, the stock is good, you can freeze unnecessary stuff and instal other kernels or launchers.

Even still not that stable, but the usability still blows the stock ROM out of water, especially MIUI.

Root can be really nice if you know what you doing. I fully agree with the op. But again I'm sure the most people know what they are doing. My GSII is not rooted this is the first time I didn't modify the phone for my own needs.
The galaxy is perfect as it is. I miss titanium, cyanogenmod etc. Bug I have a solid os. I really don't need any root (atleast for now).
I read all the issues on xda and I must say I have none of them. No random boots I have great battery life 1 day heavy usage. I had no lag what so ever.
This phone is great as it is. I have nothing against rooting but I won't recommended to normal users

In some countries if you don't have root you can't use "market enabler" for you to update Google Maps.

this world is not about rooting only, tons of apps and upgrades r going on without the need for a root access.
however, rooting is a double edge weapon dont use it until u understand it+plus u need to watch what r installing on ur phone as they will have more access than u know

Fully COMPLETE Roms discussion....

Ok I really disappointed in the Xperia x10 development section.
The only usable Roms are based on 2.1. Now these roms are fantastic. Really do the job well and I would class them as fully operational.
Now the other threads based on 2.2,2.3,MIUI etc are indeed under development. Some excellent work going on and if the 3 Musketeers could only project manage then Im sure a full working rom would be achieved.
So really Im wondering why XDA does not have a full working rom section that allows noobs like myself to go to to download knowing its a fully tested working rom?
Now before the fanboys jump all over me I would state that I am a donator to worthwhile causes and development but seriously the roms released so far can in no way be advertised as stable enough for daily use. It is a phone after all....eg. In one prominent thread today a developer is congratulated for releasing a rom that cannot make a telephone call.......Yesterday one was congratulated for an update that doesnt allow the phone to even switch on!
I do notice in the majority of other areas of XDA there are plenty of full working roms for other devices. Im fully aware that SE's security on this device has so far made it impossible to cook a newer version of android without using old parts.
So perhaps the x10 forum sections do indeed need an area for full working roms. Id presume the developers would also like this so they can transfer there work to it when completed and in return be suitable rewarded for there efforts.
Your thoughts?
I'm releasing a gingerbread rom today with everything working! Oh hai jk guise nothing works lulz
On a serious note, free x10 has been great to me..only issue is camcorder, but it is otherwise perfect

Thanks for your reply. I did indeed try this ROM but I was getting way to many errors in my day to day use for it to be considered stable for daily use. I was also not keen on the support from developer. I believe he has been MIA now for a considerable time....
I do fully understand though that without that developer I would not have been able to do the majority of things I have done to my phone....Hopefully this ROM will one day be Fully working and can be classified as such...
Weird I have not had a single issue... I use my phone a lot too.
I've been using wolfbreaks 2.2.1 CM6.1.3 for about ten days and it's stable. No stock videocam but flash & apps2sd more than make up for it. Very quick and aesthetically pleasing.

Again tried and far from stable! Perhaps though that is where the issues arise....One mans stable is another mans manic!
My version of stable is a ROM that allows me to use all my hardware functions and reports no errors.....Just like stock....
Ever think maybe it's you? I've been keeping up with the free x10 thread and most people don't report errors other than the camcorder..
non working camera and videocam is a deal breaker for me, therefore still sticking with official.

No I am experienced enough thanks to this site to dowload the rom and install. If you cant see the other reports of errors in that thread then perhaps it is me and I need my eyes tested....
Battery drainage?

Dropping 3g connection?
To name but 3......
Anyhow going slightly off topic when really the point is too see if anyone else thinks a section for fully working roms would be helpful?

I think it's a great idea, but it will be difficult because of the word "fully worked/stable" (what for one person is stable is not for another)
Sure you could put that section in but don't expect to see a single rom that is 2.2+ in there. I realistically as much as i hope I'm wrong don't expect to ever see one in there. This phone is pretty much at the end of it's run now and the bootloader is still locked with no intention from SE to unlock it due to certain copyrighted materials and the such. Sad but a fact i think we all need to start facing.
I almost think we're at the point where there is very little more that can be done other than variations of the same roms already available.
Please do not take this as a shot at the devs as i have much respect for the work they do and without them my phone wouldn't be half what it is today. But in my opinion its time to stop wishing and hoping for things that just aren't in the cards with this particular piece of hardware.
did you come here just to complain? atleast they are making something and wasting thier time for us stop moaning and if your unhappy then dont flash the roms otherwise be happy with what you get.

These kind of bugs are always reported about OFFICIAL ROMs also Just read every thread after every update from SE etc
I'm using [MOD][rendeiro2005]Cyanogen6.1.3_v01 (CM-updated) for many weeks now for my daily use... Working awesome... Camera works, just video-recording doesn't work properly... This is the only issue... ROM works like a charm

The FreeX10 (beta4) is still 2.2.1 (I'm using it as we speak, very stable, I can't complain). The only 2.3 ROM I've seen discussed for the SE Xperia x10 is Cyanogen CM7.0 RC1 v005 Gingerbread 2.3.3, which --based on current thread discussion, I haven't tried it myself-- appears to be very unstable at this time.
If there's another 2.3 ROM for the X10 circulating the forums, I haven't seen it. Then again, I haven't really looked through the entire thread.
great
I like what this was supposed to become but not what it s actually.
I'm also a new x10 user, I come from htc desire (z). and I was happy to see that it was far more easy to root the x10i and remove the root when the phone has to go for reparation.
It was not my intention to come and play with different roms, but deu to a wrong installation of a theme I had to instal a custom rom. Now, I like the stock X10 interface. so I'm looking for roms who runs better as the stock rom but look more or less the same...
any suggestions?

Not true. I don't have those issues, and neither does Eternity, Blue Sparks, etc.
I think this is a good idea, but in practice would fail. There are FAR too few "fully functional" ROMs to warrant a separate forum. Maybe we should just start using [STABLE] tags or something.
There would seriously be like 5 legit posts in that forum, and then it would get filled up with crap till it's unusable.
for u, i think the stock rom and the JIT mod will do it for u if u like the stock rom =)

[Q] Which ROM do I pick?

I haven't updated my ROM in a while, mainly because I don't have the time to. I was running Baked Snack 1.9, but now I want to upgrade to Gingerbread.
There are tons of ROMS in the development forum, and I'm not sure which one to pick. I'm not really concerned with how a ROM looks, since I'm going to load LauncherPro on there anyway.
So, here are the requirements that I have:
- Running Gingerbread
- 4G, GPS, both cameras supported
- Good battery life
- HDMI mirroring
- No FPS limit
- Preferably can run CIFS Manager
Is there anything else that I should be looking for??
Thanks in advance!

FFS people do some research test a few roms and pick the one you like the best
we don't all have the time for that. i could easily spend hours researching and trying them out, which is all time that my phone is half functional, but there are higher priorities on my plate.

OFFICIALLY CM7 says it supports 4G.
However, my experience with CM7 WiMax has been shoddy at best. If you move from a 4G area to a non-4G area then back, most of the time the 4G breaks and you must reboot your phone to reconnect. Even if you stay in a 4G area, sometimes the 4G simply drops out, and you are stuck with both 4G and 3G icons on the screen, once again having to reboot to restore the 4G. There are some work-arounds, but it's definitely not stable, even in RC3. Don't even get me started on trying to wireless tether via 4G on CM7, even if you are lucky enough to get it to connect, you get about 2-3Mbits down whereas on Sense with Wireless Tether for Root Users you get 5-6 Mbits down.
Very annoying.
Anyway, I've given up on CM until the 4G issues are ironed out. I'm not paying an extra $10 a month for 4G if it's not stable enough to use.
My recommendation is to hop over to a MikFroyo ROM. It's as stable an fast as I've seen with everything working. You can apply themes and mods to get the Gingerbread look you want while you wait with the rest of us for the EVO to get official 2.3 support.
Good luck and hope this helped!

there are tons of reasons to root, as you probably know. i would like to use CIFS manager, tether, and use HDMI mirroring.
i was not aware that the stock rom now has unlocked FPS, but this was why i went to a non-stock rom in the first place. but now that i've gone to non-stock, i find that they are faster and have better battery life than stock.
Very tru they are way better with way more options. Idk wat the cifs is. But as far as tether goes there is pda-net for stock. But imho half the fun of rooting is trying all the roms from all the fabulous devs here on xda. It really doesn't take to long to see if a particular Rom is for u. Especially if u have TB. Then if a Rom isn't for u just nand restore to ur old Rom and in my experience its about 20 mins to try it and restore if its not for you. Plus everyone will have their own opinion about a Rom so in order for u to kno which one is for u u gotta try it

I gotta stick up for the OP here a little bit. He's asking for our help, and that's not a helpful comment to ask him "Why root?"
Not having to pay $30 to tether your EVO to a PC was reason enough for me. Or to overclock. Or to theme it to the max. There are many reasons to root.
This is a community for people who want to make the most of their phones. That is why we root.
Please don't come to XDA and ask "Hurr durr why did you root if you're not gonna blah, blah."
If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all, amirite?

Now I'm not trying to be rude. I see this same q on here all the time and ppl usually give their opinion about the Rom they like. Then proceed to say they need to try them to find the one they like. And op is saying he doesn't have time to do that. It's just odd to me that ppl go and root their phone then ask for others to tell them wat the best Rom is. And that's a subjective term. I agree that paying for tethering and all the other charges are bs but honestly if ur gonna root its cool to ask for ppls opinions about the "best" Rom but if u don't have time to try them y bother. So somebody says so and so Rom is the best then he trys it and hates it so y not just try them urself. Usually the op for the roms will tell u what works and not working

Sorry if I jumped the gun in assuming you were rude. As you can see, I've been lurking the forums for a few months, but today is my first time posting. I can understand if you get tired of "What's the best ROM?" threads, because you are right, the "best" ROM doesn't exist, only the best ROM for YOU.

Maybe becausae on the first page of this particular forum alone are 4, FOUR threads all asking the same question.

No Offense But....

I really respect the efforts of developers to port all roms to our x8, but see sony is a Japanese company they know what x8 can hold and what it can't , so they stopped updating it after 2.1.a...
I've tried 2 roms myself
1. GingerDX 0.8 and 0.9
2. FroyoBread 0.20
and after 1 day switched back to stock rom using xrecovery, the reason was performance was like I was playing Assassin's creed brother hood on fx5500 overclocked..
i'm not *****ing about something, i'm just sharing my opinion, you may not agree with me but in my experience stock rom is so far best for x8.
maybe in future gingerDX will get better, but right now it's very slow in performance it's like when You installed few applications , it starts to lag... common, what is phone for? to call someone in emergency, what if you're touching the Dialer Icon on your screen 5 times and it opens after 10 Seconds and when you touch the dial button it takes more 5-6 seconds to dial..
sorry if I hurt someone..
Erhm, mine is doing alright, with GingerDX.
Then again, i havent tried a single game on this phone.
I'm also no offense, Stock ROM is on 2.1, Custom's are on 2.2/2.3. Which means we have more useful features, for e.g: App2SD. Also, our devs makes our CPU runs smoother, you can see it on benchmark, it's over 3000 without OC!
If you think just some lag on dialer which makes you feel Custom ROM is not good as Stock ROM, just use Stock ROM.
yah i'm using stock rom now and sticking to it for a long time now, the only featured I liked in custom rom was text to speech in sms, is it possible in stock ? can't find it anywhere...

Well, I really do respect your opinion, but see, I know there are several ROM`s here and there, some of them functional, while others are kinda beta stage, there is no offense in saying what you think as long as you say it with respect, which is just what you did, but guess what?, I am using miniCM 7 2.0.5a in a daily basis, for some weeks now, and I don`t have any kind of trouble at all, everything works fine for me, of course stock ROM may be the most stable, but also is very limited in some areas, ie: there are some apps which need 2.2 and up to run, I have USB tethering and WIFI hotspot functionality, automatic market updates, enhanced copy-paste and a (not so) few extras.
All in all, what really matters is to enjoy your phone, we do with our rooted ones, we really enjoy playing, searching, experimenting, discovering, we are free just as linux is.

if you had a company like SONY you would be doing the same, why don't u buy Xperia Ray which is even water proof, if you love features ? don't have money ? then buy Nokia 3310
No offense, but as I see you don't need Android phone then. It's more than just a phone, and beacuse of this, it is slower in some aspects than a normal simple mobile. Keep in mind that all OS on phones are slower than any non-OS phone (like old SEs, W300, K810...etc).

SE want us to buy neo/play/arc these high-level's phone. But they makes us not to buy their phone anymore by not upgrading X8.
If Sony thought like that, wouldnt it be better for them to upgrade gingerbread, so what we think great se supports any phone and since x8 is so good, then other se phone must be better so they would maintain a loyal customer base

I respect your opinion, i just don't accept it.. You didn't say directly that their work is worthless but in your opinion why should people use or prefer a ROM that just makes the phone slower and laggy? Why should people prefer that, right?
That's about the same thing as saying that it's not worthy to use a custom ROM.

If Sony thought like that, wouldnt it be better for them to upgrade gingerbread, so what we think great se supports any phone and since x8 is so good, then other se phone must be better so they would maintain a loyal customer base

Yes, but now they're not upgrading our phone or unlock bootloader either.

if this thread was that bad, who gave it a rating of 1 star in just 10 minutes ?

Pros of rooting a tablet

Just got this A500, my wife also has one and hers runs much smoother after this latest update... Kinda choppy initially... But she took the ota, as she is not really for rooting and modifying.
I was considering rooting my tablet but wondered what the benefits were... I know Cell phone has wifi tether and other goodies, but I didn't really know what I would be gaining. I haven't taken any ota updates a of yet.

Performance and battery life increase, removing annoying stock apps, being able to customize the theme and boot animation, easily backup all your apps and the data for them with titanium backup, being able to use root only apps such as adblock and sixaxis (use a ps3 controller to play games). And a couple more im sure .
Ok I need the performance increase, the A500 lags slightly. the last ota gave my wifes tablet a big boost but it also changed the bootloader or something so now it requires a different rooting method.

Overclocking and increasing the speed/performance of the A500 was my primary goal for rooting. The lag and stutter between screens and when opening programs and scrolling through menus was unbearable.
So now Im rooted, and running whatever roms I can get my hands on (totally addicted).

Almost night and day. Scrolling is so much smoother with performance scaling set and super stable running at 1504mhz on the lastest Epiphany 3.2.1 rom.
Using 2.6.36.3HoneyVillain-3.7+ kernel.
Also the security features of Apps such as LBE privacy guard - blocks permissions I don't like when I install a new app...
I don't care what anyone says, a torch app DOESN'T need to access call/sms logs, get my location, get my IMEI/IMSI or access the net....

Ok well it looks like i'll be rooting. Is this the method you used??
http://forum.sdx-developers.com/?topic=14268.0
it depends on what version of droid u are curently have installed
---------- Post added at 09:44 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:33 AM ----------
here is a video tutorial i used if you need to root from 3.2/3.2.1
http://youtu.be/zfSPP8UOn78
if you are currently running 3.1 you can use this one.
http://youtu.be/ks4T0coq68w
after rooted i suggest flashing a custom rom. this can improve your performance and battery life as most roms have all the useless stuff riped out!!

I am having a problem booting into recovery? I know I'm rooted because i just downloaded root-browser and it asked for SU rights and I granted them. I held the left volume, and power button, then released it after you see the ACER logo right when the small texts pops up.. mine just goes to the Triangle with exclamation point.
You don't have to install clockwork mod or flash a recovery to start installing ROM's??
yes get clockwork. sorry thought that was in tutorial.
also when booting hold the buttons down till the fourth line comes up

newbie

hi all
Just got my note and love it. ..any recomeded apps or patches etc. ..
Thanks all and helloo
For me I flashed rooted gb, flash ics repack and then flash stunner. Stock GB was terrible and the audio quality was painful. This rom looks, performs better and the audio is awesome

Wrong section dude. There is one section dedicated to apps and customizations for the note.
For now stay away from customized ROMs (not reccomended for newbies)

He does have a point. If you don't know what you are doing then you could easily turn your new phone into a paperweight. I would recommend you read. Read A LOT about ROMS and kernals and everything else that goes into the custom modding of your phone before you try anything. That's how i started and flashing new stuff is a walk in the park at this point.
Yeah I would stay away from flashing etc. Me being a total newbie on android and on note I'm waiting till official ice cream sandwich release and maybe start to play around with all the advanced goodies. I used iphone since day one and jailbreaking seemed pretty easy but I'm little intimidated by android stuff :/
If you must have urge to play with it try searching on this forum for step by step guide, or try http://rootgalaxynote.com/

Mate, first of all, welcome. You've got yourself one of the best pieces of kit on the market... Prepare to be amazed!
What are you after from your note?
If it's media, check out power amp for music, moboplayer for video, maildroid for email.
For basic customisation, and check out Dr ks thread for rooting and Chainfire kernal installation which will prove good for any customisation. Think it's in the stickies. Ics is awesome, but not without its problems especially installing so best check out the precursors.
Welcome dude, may you have lots of fun!

I will start to read up and explore the world of andriod. ..as i understand there will be a update ssoon.. Ics. Will the note self update or will i have to sort myself. ..also ive seen sky go working on a note but cant find it in app store( whoops) market..?
Ps love the way this phone works
If you would like stock gingerbread, flash lc1 or lc2. Im using lc2 its a very smooth fast rom with at lease one and a half days battery with normal use. But like everyone said read alot until u understand how to flash. Read how to flash lc1 or lc2 because newer roms u need to be already rooted before u can flash them and keep root.

Yes, the Note will officially get ICS, but we don't know when.
Here's Sky Go.
