Hello Everyone,
This is my first post. I'm a noob here. I have a question about upgrading the ROM installed on my phone.
I have an HD2 and I've successfully installed the CLK version of the Typhoon ROM through CWM.
I would like to know what the easiest method is to upgrade to a newer version of the same ROM.
I know this question must have been asked before and I've tried searching. After 3 days of searching, I think that I should backup the ROM using CWM in case something goes wrong. After that, I think I can use Titanium backup to back up the apps. Is this right? Can I just upgrade over my installation and expect things to be ok?
Also, I've spent quite a bit of time making my background just right in terms of widgets and positions of shortcuts. Do I need to re-do this, or is this preserved when I upgrade the ROM. I'm planning on upgrading through the ROM Manager app.
Finally, are my email settings preserved in the email app, contacts preserved, and ringtone settings preserved when I upgrade?
Thank you so much for your help and patience. I really tried searching, but I just couldn't find the clear answers. If there is a clear thread about this, I would appreciate you pointing me to the right direction. Thanks.
When you make a backup with cwm, there is no need to backup your apps with titanium.
To update a rom you can just take the new cwm rom zip file and install it over your existing rom.
all apps, settings and also widgets should be untouched after updating.
if the system or some apps behave crazy, run fix permissions in rom manager or cwm.
Happy flashing

That's really good to know that I can just overwrite it with the downloaded ROM in zip. I tried yphooN_CM7_v3.5.4-MAGLDR.zip and I want to upgrade when new versions come out of TyphooN.
What's the difference between MAGLDR and CLK?

I find that in about 50% of updates, when I just run the flash over the existing one (I use typhoon) it hangs during booting, in which case back into cwm, factory reset, restart and let the phone boot to the welcome setup page, back into cwm, backups/restore, advanced restore and restore the data and sd-ext partitions, and reboot.

I have the cyanogens 4.0.4 rom installed on my G1, and i was wondering, if I install the cyanogen updater and decide to update it, will my apps, widget homescreen positions, and settings get erased?
I know it's a newb questions but trust me I search the forums and nobody answers that, which leads me to believe that everything stay in tact.
I just want to know this, because with donut released today, I want to know how to update if and when cyanogen throws out another rom.

CM Updater does not wipe, it just installs. Most likely you won't need a wipe ifyou go from one CM rom to another BUT just incase it doesn't load after say 30 mins, then you may need to wipe and reinstall. Goodluck.
Thanks for the clarification. In case I do have to wipe and clean install, is there any app that can save my phone as it is, with all the apps installed my home screen customized with icons, and all the settings intact?
I've read about some apps that do this put I think that just save the apps and not the phone state.

If you are running CM 4.0.4, you are probably running Apps2SD as well. What this means is that all your applications are saved to your SD card.
So, as long as you don't delete the ext2/3/4 partition on your SD card, all the applications you download will be saved. (Even if you wipe the PHONE)
EDIT: Sorry, I misunderstood the question. If you want to backup the phone in its entirety, you have to do a Nandroid Backup through the Recovery Console (HOME + POWER on boot)
run backup for root users and a nandroid backup
because 4.0.4 is still cupcake with donut sprinkles, updating to full donut there is a very high chance u need to wipe....
all your apps will still be there if ur using a2sd
and if you run backup for root users before and after all your stuff should be fine
i assume you are waiting for cyanogens next rom before updating?
from what i have heard, you will have to have a donut rom (either the htc adp1 or one of his before the C&D)
in which case you will definetly need to wipe
backup for root is a life saver and a2sd makes it all a little smoother
good luck
Hi, I'm running Cyanogenmod 7 V2.4 for a couple of weeks, everything is really smooth, battery is OK and very happy but I'm having the GPS issue that takes lot of time to lock on the Sat's, I've read on the Changelog that V2.6 has some improvements on GPS (tried gps.conf fix but nothing), and want to go there, so my questions is, is there any way to just update from one release from Android to another using NAND? or everything is just backup apps, install from scratch and restore? I was not able to find the answer on the forum, thanks!
Unless you have already installed clockworkmod, you'll have to backup and restore everything. If you don't know what clockworkmod (CWM) is, you don't have it.
You might want to consider to immediately install 2.6 in CWM, to easen future update processes.
Or use something like titanium backup to restore apps and data. GPS is really still under a lot of work

Thanks both, I'll try to get titanium backup to do the backup/restore this time and then install 2.6 with CWM, I was reading and sounds cool. Thanks both replys!
You know, I was having the same issue with nearly every build and couldn't figure it out. Then I turned on the "use wireless networks" option under location and security and now I get a fast GPS lock with nearly every build.

I don't have data plan on my line, I've tried with wifi but it seems that from wifi didn't get the data. Another that maybe I'll try first is to upgrade the radio to latest version. Thanks!

I read about clockworkmod, but it's not very clear for me if I can do upgrades of the Android via clockwork or u meant to have clockworkmod to make backups? Thanks again.
When you flash a new rom through CWM, it doesn't wipe the one previously installed, but rather upgrades it. It's always recommended to create a nandroid backup (inside CWM too) first in case things go wrong.
Hello everyone,
I tried search the answer but only found something in a different phone section and it was not clear.
My question...I have already flashed with the Ice rom and it works fine...when I decide to change roms and flash a NEW one...what are the steps I must do for it to work correctly?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Brian K
If you're staying with the same rom (i.e. upgrading to a newer version of the same rom) - back up, wipe cache/dalvik cache, then flash
If you're changing rom but staying with Sense-based roms - do the same and see if you have any issues. If you do run into issues - wipe data/cache/dalvik cache, reboot.
If you're going from AOSP to Sense or Sense to AOSP - back up, wipe data/cache/dalvik cache, flash.
Its just do the same thing you did the first time. Make sure to do a full wipe and flash

Might be a lil off topic but I think it might be related.....you said 'do the same thing you did the first time'....so i'm guessing first time means the first time i flash a custom rom?? And if so, does that mean for the first time i flash a custom rom should i do a full wipe???
Thanks!

Yes you are correct. The post above mine is way more detailed. You should also do a nandroid backup of the rom you're on now in case you wanna go back.

The best way to move between ROMs is to make a nandroid + Titanium backup. Fully wipe. Flash your new ROM. Carefully re-import settings from Titanium if all seems to be working well. In the event of a failure, roll back to your nandroid copy.
Im really sorry but I still dont understand...I mean I kinda do but dont want to mess up and because of that, I'm trying to have a clear pic in my head.
Example...when you flash for the first time you have to:
flash recovery
wipe data/cach/etc
drop the rom onto the sd card
select the rom from sd card
reboot phone
Do you have to do ALL the same steps again, if you want to try a NEW rom...or no?
If no...what steps do you do differently?
Also...as for the Nandroid backup...do you do this everytime also, or just once?
Again, Im really sorry to be such a newb...but I am trying...I have just about every guide...its just that most guide are not for newbs and alot of times they are outdate. Dont get me wrong I appreciate the guides...I TRULY Do, I just dont want to mess this phone up.
Thanks in advance for any help

Repeat everything as you listed it except for flashing a new recovery (unless moving to/from a Froyo/Gingerbread; as recovery differs between Froyo and GB). I usually only make nandroid backups once I have found a ROM that I like and have it working well. It's a system restore! Then if I want to tinker with the "shiny new ROM" that just came out I can load it up and play with it. If it doesn't work well or at all, just roll back to your faithful fully working nandroid copy you made.

Actually switching between Froyo and GB has been made even easier by the new ClockWorkMod Recovery... TrueBlue's method works amazingly... Find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944681... Flash it like you would a ROM via CWM... His zip also INCLUDES the STOCK RECOVERY so if you ever want to recalibrate the battery you can do so by going into Rom Manager and selecting 2.5.1.4 as your recovery, when done just switch back by selecting 3.0.0.5 and that will load up 3.0.0.6..
To answer OP's Question...
Step 1) NANDroid backup (Backup and Restore > Backup > press trackball)
Step 2) wipe data/cache/dalvik (I always do each of them twice for safe measures); Like someone here already said, if upgrading to a new version of THE SAME ROM BUT ITS BEEN UPDATED, just wipe CACHE AND DALVIK. Otherwise, wipe all 3.
Step 3) Install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard > select the ROM you want to install.
P.S. FYI I WOULD DO THIS FIRST!!!!! For flashing TrueBlue's 3.0.0.6 to be able to flash both froyo and gingerbread roms without changing the recovery each time (which is a pain in the ass btw) FOLLOW STEP 3 EXACTLY. The only difference is you will choose GlacierRecovery_to_RomManager.zip instead of whatever Rom you want. Reboot, go into RomManager, scroll to the bottom and select All ClockWorkMod Recoveries, choose 3.0.0.5 and it should say successfully flashed. Reboot into recovery and make sure at the bottom it says CWM 3.0.0.6. If it does, congrats, if not, reboot and reflash it, and continue to do this until you see CWM 3.0.0.6 at the bottom of the recovery screen.
PM me if you can't get it to work and want some more help with anything!
Hello,
I want to say it again, that the people in the Android forums are so much more helpful then back when I had a iphone and needed help. The people over in the iphone forums would sometomes help, but most of all, they would be rude.
Android forum techs are the BEST!
As for the Nandroid backup...this part also is a bit confusing, cause a few guides/videos show them doing the nandroid after they do the 3 wipes. However, I thought it made sense to do it first like you said.
Last night at around 4am I flashed CM7 with no problem and it is truly amazing. I am started to make sense just a little bit of all this but right now...I still cant wrap my head around the whole flashing recovery process.
Please understand I.m not just asking for answers, I am also reading as much as possible...I am making an effort.
Thanks so much everyone,
Brian K
No problem. If you have any questions I'd be glad to answer them for you or direct you in the direction for your answer. Just pm me like I said.
Just continue to read read read.. That's why I did and this is the first phone I've rooted or done anything with and I've become knowledgeable with some of the easier concepts and I'm trying to learn more complicated concepts as I go along.. Everyone had to start somewhere, and most of us here on xda realize this which is why we are so happy to help as long as these questions aren't asked and answered 4000 times.
P.S. Where ever you read/watched to wipe before NANDroiding I would advise to not go back to that because that is COMPLETELY the wrong thing to do!!

I know I keep saying this but so far everyone here is sooo freakn helpful. Im shocked cause when I had a iphone and did the whole jailbreak thing...the people over there where very rude.
dont worry dnguyen1988...u were nice enough to help out and I promise to take you up on the offer for help
Amac1222...just to be clear...your saying to do a Nandroid backup before wiping ANYTHING...yes?
Thanks again for everything,
Brian
Yes, even when updating your rom, you can always move the nandroid off your sd to an external hd. Or you can delete them as you move up updates, (i.e. Build 41 to 42 to 43 delete 41 once you know 42 is good to backup to if needed). When I flash kernels I tend to not nandroid each time although I should. As a super noob I would and I used to until you are comfortable.
The basic thing is you always want something to fall back on in case you get stick in a boot loop or stuck on the mytouch screen.

I am currently using the stock rom on my rooted g2, and I want to get cm7. I got rom manager premium, and downloaded cm7. At this point one of my friends told me that I should boot into clockwork recovery, format every option except the sd card, and then I should install the rom from the zip on the sd card, using clockwork recovery. He said that this would remove all the old system files so that the new rom would install cleanly, and that if I dont do this I might have problems running the new rom. I thought that rom manager does this for you automatically, as long as you use the option "clear data and cache" before you install the new rom. According to my friend, that option in rom manager (to clear the data and cache before installing the new rom) doesn't remove all the necessary things. Is this true, or does rom manager take care of all of this for you?
This is my first time installing a new rom, so I wanna make sure I do it right.
I really appreciate the XDA forums in general, so I want to thank everyone for making XDA my go to place for anything having to do with my phone!

your friend has the right idea. one thing I would add (prior to formatting anything) is making a nandroid backup of your stock setup.
also, don't rely on rom manager to perform any CWM recovery functions properly. anything that will be done via recovery (ie flashing a rom, making a backup, etc) should be done straight through recovery and not through rom manager. ymmv there, but better to be safe than sorry.
Thanks for the quick and detailed post. I already made a nandroid backup, and saved it on both my laptop and my phone, but I forgot to mention it in the post. I will go ahead and flash the rom diretly from clockwork recovery. Thanks a lot for the advice!

Oh no...
I installed cm7, and it looks good, but it looks like I don't have the android market anymore! What should I do?
You have to flash the Gapps to get the market etc.. download from the link and flash through recovery.

Im sure this question has been answered somewhere but i can't seem to find it. I was wondering if some one could give me detailed instructions on how to flash roms on my DROID x. Im running android 2.3.3 and system version 4.5.605. I have rom manager with cwm recovery flashed and paid for the d2bootstrap app.i also rooted with petes one click moto root. Im just having extremely difficult time figuring out how to flash roms. Id appreciate any help?
First things First.
You said you have CWM flashed.
Good.
Make sure you have 2-3 gigabytes of free space on your SD card.
Boot into that via Rom Manager and make a "nandroid backup" as you'll hear them called.
[Simply labeled Backup]
Now Select Reboot.
Open Contacts>Settings>Export To SD (or something similar).
Install This
https://market.android.com/details?id=jp.eguchi.android.bookmarkbackup&feature=search_result
And backup your browser bookmarks.
Next install this.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en
(The Pro Key makes this process...faster...but not any different.)
Open it up and Options>Batch>Backup all User Applications
Now...Find the ROM you'd like to try.
http://rootzwiki.com/forum/16-droid-x-developer-forum/
I'd Suggest Liberty 3 if you're wanting a semi-stock experience with good battery life and decent customization.
MIUI if you want a SUPER pretty experience...with superb customization.
Or
CM7 if you want Great customization + AOSP (How Android feels STOCK).
*Use RevNumbers pinned in the CyanogenMod Forum for CM7
The download you find will be a .zip.
Put this on your SD card...
And boot into CWM.
I always do a factory Reset Here.
And then...
Navigate to Install Zip From SD...
Find it...
Install it.
Congratulations!
You're now running a Custom ROM!
You can now import your contacts...
Sign into your google account and reinstall Titanium and that Browser Backup app...
And use Titanium Backup to restore your Applications (Most people Say NOT to restore Data with this, as it may cause Force Closes...however...if you do...You can always Factory Reset from CWM and Reinstall the Zip if you have problems. Data = Saves for your Games...how Facebook Remembers your Password...stuff like that.)
And that other application should restore your browser bookmarks.
If any of this process leaves you with a broken phone...
And you somehow messed up...
Or would simply like to return to where you were...
You can use CWM's "Restore" option to restore your backup...
Or if you can't boot into CWM...
You'll SBF
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/331-guide-flashing-droid-x-sbf/
Re-root...
And restore.
man i really appreciate you taking time to explan all that to me. it worked FLAWLESSY!! im finally rooted and flashing custom roms with no problems thanks to your answer. so thanks man
No problem at all man.
The hardest part of flashing your first rom is finding out how to do so.
I wish there was a simple guide out there stickied in every forum, as I know I could have used one...would have saved me a couple sbfs...and I'm sure I'm not alone on that.
