[Q] I have very low mic gain on TyphooN CM7 - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

My mic gain is so low that people in the other end almost can't hear anything. If I shout they can just hear me.
It started after I updated my TyphooN CM7 from 3.4.2 (I think)
I tried deleting htcleo.acdb, didn't realy help. Then I tried installing the one that fixes the high mic gain Didn't work either
I have tried reverting back to GBX v12 and also some older versions of TyphooN CM7, still not working.
I have recently changed CLK, could this be the issue? I didn't notice anything just as I changed, but maybe people just didn't tell me.
even though the voice is low I hear a lot of noise when moving the phone around, so I'm thinking that maybe the mic is broken or covered with dust. Where is the mic located if I want to try and clean it?
Any ideas?

This could have been solved if I had just gone low-tech from the start.
A needle in the mic pinhole did the trick

Problem with microphone volume when calling

Hi,
Since my Hermes fell off the table people keep complaining that they have problems hearing my voice while talking on the phone. They say the volume of my voice is too low. When using a headset everything's fine.
I've never had a problem like that, nevertheless I dismantled the Hermes to see if there was anything wrong with the microphone after the fall, but it seemed ok.
I also recorded my own voice using the voice recorder in WM6 to test the microphone and strangely enough my voice sounds pretty loud and clear to me.
After some googling I found that many people seem to have a problem with their voice barely being heard by other people on the phone.
Solutions I could not find and I do not understand why that problem has occurred after the Hermes fell down, as it seems to be software-related (otherwise my mic-test would have resulted in a low-volume recording, which it did not).
Has anyone here had that problem and found a solution?
Well, I've solved the problem, although not by the means I originally wanted to. I just did a recovery of a Backup from before the day the Hermes fell down and voila - everything works again as it should (although I still don't get it how the phone falling down can change the SOFTWARE, but hey, as long as it works).
Again we see the importance of regular backups.
I had this problem before. tried to fix it but didn't work. Flashed all sorts of roms, all didn't work. Even newly flashed roms still had this problem.
Headset is fine
but just speaking into the mic isn't.
Same as you, recording works fine too, but mic to phone just doesn't work. I am curious how did you dissasemble your phone though, do you have a manual or something?

Hi again,
Well, the problem's back again. Even after resetting the Hermes at first it worked fine, but later people complained again that my voice was too low. So it seems that the problem is first solved by resetting/backup recovery, but then reappears. Don't know how that is possible, but I fear that it is indeed hardware-related.
Has anyone any suggestions as to what I can do?
Am I right in assuming that the hole next to the one for resetting the phone is for the microphone? Because when I dismantled my Hermes the corresponding part did not look like a microphone at all. Here's a picture of what I am talking about:
Is the part where the black rubber-thingy (circled below) that easily falls off when dismantling is placed over the microphone?
As for the dismanteling, go there:
http://www.mikechannon.net/page1.html
and search for "Hermes", there are some nice guides there.
I appreciate any hints that could lead to me solving this problem.
Update:
I've been searching for corresponding Registry Entries and so far have found these:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Phone
Changing "Vol" to 65535 increased the mic volume a little bit, but it was still too low for being acceptable (I have been testing the volume by placing my Hermes next to my PC speaker while playing an audiobook at a normal volume and calling my landline as to see how it sounds).
See also here for the thread where I found this info.
I also found these two threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-260171.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-256734.html
My Values at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\AUDIOGAINx were originally at 18 and 19. I changed them first to AA and this did, or so it seemed, increase the volume more notably. Changing the Values to CC however changed little compared to AA (although this should make the mic even louder). I may be mistaken, but I even think that the quality was better with AA.
I am not familiar with the actual volume of the mic at the receiver's end, but in my opinion the volume was pretty ok. I will call a few of the people who have been complaining and see what they have to say about the volume.
Update:
I just called my brother and he said my voice was as low as before, so my modifications had no effect.
Next thing I will try is to totally disassemble my Hermes and put it back together so to check every connection that might have gone loose.
Update: Dismantled it totally (except for the screen part) - didn't help either.
Seems like there is no solution to this problem. Most likely I will have to get a replacement. This sucks.
HI
Exactly the same problem here.
(No phone audio but Note recording & Headset works fine)
Only the phone was not dropped. Just happened !
Did a reset but did'nt wok either !
Phones in great condition.
Like you though it was a Software Issue
How much was a new mic ?
Can it be economically soldered on ?
Is there no solution whatsoever ?
Please keep me updated
Many Thanks

Hi Sampler,
In the end I found no solution to my problem. Got myself a Vario III and am using that one ever since.
Please let me know if you find anything that can solve this.
Greets,
Cartman
Some of these problems (I don't say all) may be caused by damage to the mini USB port and the fine wires inside it. The port has wiring related to sound both earpiece and Mic. As you know connecting a handsfree headset cuts off the Mic and earpiece, so you can see that damage to the port or bend pins inside it can cause Mic problems. This may be why sound recording is fine, but in phone mode the Mic is cut off.
I say this only to avoid the assumption that the Mic is damaged (it may be), but it can also be the port and associated wiring that causes the problem. If you are dismantling check the solder contacts around the USB port for cracks and also for bent pins in the socket.

Help! No sound from speakers

Hi guys,
I have Tmobile HD2 and it's on stock radio 2.08. I flash nrg rom 04/23 6.5.x and everything was working fine. Today I just changed the rom to 4/23 6.5 and now my speaker don't make any sounds. Everything play fine through headphone but not from speaker. I play music, movies, ringtones nothing works. No sounds. I just did task29 and flashed to 2 other different roms and still no sounds. What happened to my phone? Is the speaker gone for good? I only had this phone for a week. Any helps is appreciated.
I've had a similar issue in past phones, where after removing audio jack the phone still thinks it is plugged in and even a hardreset didnt fix it. Try to remove and insert the audio jack rapidly in succession, its worth a try. Good luck.
Regards
Flashmore
Thanks for prompt reply. I tried multiple time with no success.

I don't think it's rom related. I try nrg, miri, stock and cell. none works.
I had the same issue. I think thats happen after i use earfone.
Do you solve this problem?
thx
I had the same issue. The easiest way to tell if it is the same issue is to look to see if you have the headset icon in the bar when you dont have any connected. I solved this by (not suggesting you do it unless you are sure) there is a pressure prong on the top of the 3.5 jack. I used a tool to bend it down a little. If you still can I would swap it out for a new one.
i have the same issuse, and i've tried 2 rom until now.
in a call, if i press speaker, i can hear everything.
if i'm using mediaplayer, tcmp, youtube client, i get no sound.
even if i try to change the ringtone, i cannot hear when it plays for demo.
but if i plug in my headphones, everything works prefect, i can hear.
i have no headphones icon in the upper part of the display (so that the phone thinks i didn't get the jack out).
any ideea would be really appreciated.
Hi all,
i bought unbranded/unlocked HD2 on 5-6-2010 and played alots with it - so i didn't really noticed a serious speaker problem.
Within the first week i wondered about the fact that i sometimes couldn't hear the callers voice. I had this effect even when i called somebody. I thought about a software error - so i flashed to the latest german stock ROM.
But it didn't fixed the problem. I was only able to hear somebody, when i used the internal speaker or the headset.
One day i got a call and i "accidentally" pressed the phone speaker a bit harder than usual to my ear and the voice came and left - (ear)speaker defect.
I informed the dealer about this defect and i got a new HD2.
He told me, it would be the ninth HD2 with this particular defect since January 2010.
Please check your speaker for a defective contact - maybe it hits you too.
Good luck,
Stephan
mine was a software problem.
i have elegancia 8.5 now and it works, i can hear youtube, fm radio on the speaker.
the other thing that bothers me is that the sound i hear in a call is too low.
i don't know if it's a radio problem.
ah, btw, i can't use the volume hardware buttons, they are broke from a down fall, and i can't seem to find how to change in a call volume from windows.
I also hat that prob. The funny solution: Audio was set to silent in windows media player. After turning up the volume the problem was gone. I had this problem only one times. Strange thing...
I have the same problem with my hd2 now and still couldnt fix it.I have htc2 for 2-3 months, didnt have this kind of problem, no sound from the phone without earphones.can it be solved with any sound driver or sth like that, I tried hard reset, flashing, orginal rom, downloaded previous working rom, no solution.Appreciate if you could give some advices.thanks

??? help pls ???
My speaker stopped working last night. Had been working fine for the last few weeks.
Haven't installed anything or done anything different in the last few days.
Have only recently got my phone set up as I want it, so I'm loathe to do a factory reset. Read on another forum that HTC are aware of this and that 65% of HD2 owners suffer with is - not sure how true this is though.
If it's a hardware issue, is it easy to replace the speaker? If so, is it easy to order one?
Thanks
SC
I have the same problem! I have try like for ROM already and no solution i even uninstall HSPL to see if anything happened but not luck so far. can any expert or someone who have already solved this problem post a solution or something PLEASE i getting worried or i mean i am already!!
THANKS!
fixed It!! speaker Problem!HD2
well is was pretty simple! all i did was i put speaker volume on muted and with the earphone start to plug in and and out the jack several times while i was playing a video on windows media after that i unplug it and set the speaker volume up and hit play!!! speaker on!!!!
Just had the no sound from speaker problem, I always use my bluetooth motorokr s9-hd headset but i didnt feel like charging it so i used my sony earbuds with the 3.5 jack for the first time and it caused the no sound from speaker issue......I plugged the earbuds back in, played with the volume buttons on the phone and the speaker is back on

My #1 concern with Android builds at the moment: Volume.

I know at first many complained of speaker volume being too low. So developers did something. What exactly was done?
I have noticed 3 things with all builds I have tried:
1. When making/recieving calls the initial volume is random, either too soft or too loud. The volume indicator (one that comes up when volume buttons are pushed) never seem to relate to the actual volume level. Often the volume indicator is all the way down while the volume is all the way up. And in order to turn it down I have to adjust the volume indicator all the way up and then move it back down which works. Weird.
2. In-call audio sounds bad compared to WinMo. It sounds harsh, like its very slightly distorted. Its as if there are audio/eq settings in Android that don't match the hardware.
3. Finally, why this is my biggest concern, I blew out my outside speaker when on speaker phone in Android (there was a little pop sound in the middle of a call, I could not hear rings or anything after that, in WinMo as well). I am starting to see others report this. Luckily I got it replaced. But I am now scared to do speaker phone in Android. I have used speaker phone with WinMo plenty with no issues.
I used to have inconsistent sound issues in some builds, I used Louder Volume Hack from the market to modify the volume for headset, bluetooth and in call boost (Range) and it works pretty fine. As for the external speaker, I can't really say... I haven'T noticed.
I have this problem too! My speaker phone blew up while I was using Mdeejay eVo Sense v. 2.3 rEVOlution. I'm pretty sad because I can't even get notifications anymore or rings. I have to leave my phone on vibrate. Speaker doesn't even work on winmo either. I tried task 29, new winmo rom, new android rom and tried to factory reset and nothing work. I'm pretty sure my speaker is done.
Froystone 2.3 on 7.6 the sound volume was great. No problems however going to evolution 2.3 I notice I struggle to hear on some calls.
i get great sound in skinnyevo by phireMOD. havent tried speakerphone though, doubt ever will after reading this thread.
I haven't had any issues with my speaker.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
My number 1 concern too.
I use the HD2 for navigation and playing around. I have a e71 for phonecalls.
The speakervolume with the latest kernels is an absolute dissaster for me.
I don't see any developers reacting on this issue reported by several people which frightens me a bit.
I dont mean to curb people from using their speaker phone. I am just one experience. But I wanted to see if anyone else had the the same problem. Particularly the not-so-great sounds issue in general.
What build was running when You had speaker failure ?
Try the [UPD][BUILD][01.11.10]|<<Mdeejay FroYo Sense Series>>|2.29.405.2\
Next Sense 2.7
Very loud. I had the same problem but this one is 1/2 volume just to be tolerable.

Ok, not one I tried but I hope this turns out to be bad luck and not a general problem !
You say others have had a similar problem ?
from a electronics point of view an impedance miss match speaker/amp would generally damage the amp before the speaker, speakers normally let You know if You are "over driving" them a good while before they burn out
I highly doubt the speaker loss is a general problem. But the less-than-stellar sound seems to be a general problem, and I am wondering if they could be related.
If I had the time I would dig into the builds myself to see how the sound settings are handled n such.
I just put XAndroid 2.2 (Froyo) on my Tilt2 and got it working - I always use the speaker phone when making calls... was very exited to see that it works - until I realized that when the speaker is on in a call - I can hear them - but they cannot hear me. If I turn off the speaker - we can talk again - but for some reason - speaker for me is mute for them... not sure where to post this as a possible bug.
I used this package: XDANDROID.2.2.1.AOSP.FRX03.21.11.10.FULL_PACKAGE
on an AT&T Tilt2 (Rhodium) running Windows mobile, I believe 6.5.
thanks for your patience - this is a big place - and it hard to find my way around.
updated my zimage and the speaker now works
thank you to everyone!

[Q] Cyanogenmod 10.1.3 RC2 persistent headphones microphone woes... please help!

Hello XDA
Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Forgive me in advance if I lack XDA etiquette or am posting in the wrong area.
Many of you CM users are familiar with [and have suffered through] the headphones call audio bug that plagued 10.1/10.2 nightlies for some time back in August, which have been allegedly fixed. The bug involved broken headphone microphone ability; one can hear call/non-call audio coming from the headphones when plugged in, and the headphone microphone will work with out-of-call applications (i.e. sound recorder, etc.), though when in-call the microphone is rendered useless and does not work. The actual phone microphone fortunately remains working, so the caller can just barely hear you to say, "Hey, can you put your phone up to your face? You sound muffled." This results in me having to hold the actual phone close to my mouth in order to use headphones, which defeats the purpose of headphones entirely.
The problem seems to be fixed on CM 10.2 nightlies when I was running them, though for stability purposes I prefer to revert to CM 10.1.3 RC with ktoonsez AT&T kernel. I always flash clean, wipe the cache/davlik appropriately, etc. Everything else with this current setup is phenomenal, save this damned headphone microphone issue. I do a lot of multitasking when on the phone and this is a crippling defect.
I've searched long and hard for an answer to this issue but have ended empty-handed and am going crazy. It seems most people are no longer experiencing this issue. Am I the only one left? Does anyone else have the same issue?
Any help would be infinitely appreciated!
I have a similar problem. If my headphones aren't already plugged into the phone when a call comes in and I then plug them in, the other person cannot hear me at all. I usually have to restart the phone with the headphones plugged in to get them to work on calls.
Sgs4 mic issue with cm10.1
Yes I have the same problem and couldn't find any solution either.
M on 10.1.3 RC2 same as you and this problem bothered me ever since I installed cm10.1 nightly back in August.
I will do a clean wipe (including nand erase) and install latest Samsung stock os, and see if this solve few of issues (I have problem with my gas as well).

Very Low Mic Volume On Custom ROMs

So the problem is that no matter what custom ROM I use the mic volume is incredibly low. Talking on the phone I cannot be heard at all, if I put it on loudspeaker I can be heard faintly. Same problem for any app that uses the microphone, like sound recorder, recording a video, it barely picks up any sound.
But what's strange is that everything works perfectly on on Stock. I've installed custom ROMs on this before and last used cm10 before I upgraded way back. But now the problem also exists on that CM10 ROM. Any ideas how to fix it?
Additionally I've tried disabling the google now search listening (which fixed the same problem on my OPO) but does not work here. I've tried the following ROMs: CM10, CM11, CM12 all official nightlies and Crdroid 5.1.1.
Very frustrating as otherwise CM12 works perfectly and I intend to give this phone to someone!
So testing it further I found out that it works fine using google now and search. So either the internal microphone is disabled or maybe noise cancelling is messed up.
