Why sbc? - EVO 4G General

Everyone seems to be asking for sbc for the upcoming sense kernels. I haven't been in a while..the last time I was looking at kernels it sounded like the general consensus on xda was that sbc was unfavorable and could even be dangerous to the phone. What happened?

Nobody could really substantiate the fear-mongering (for lack of a better term) and people just sort of accepted that SBC wasn't going to cause your phone to explode. It does give a pretty nice battery boost, so people went with it.

Way more people like it now
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.

Cause there is a major flaw in our phone where when u charge it and it hits a full charge the battery stops running off the phone charger but off the phones battery yeah i know crazy so when u take it off the charger it is already at %90 instead of a full charge

Luv SBC but alittle afraid to plug my phone in at night to charge! Is it safe to let it charge over night?

My phone is on the charger as much as it's off, since I'm usually keeping it connect via USB so I can get into the SD card at will, and it charges all night.
No probs.
Don't believe the scary hype about SBC Kernels....

It was pretty much a witch hunt. Some guy made a thread about his battery burning up, posted some half ass pictures and let the masses run with it. I used sbc with froyo with zero problems, always charged overnight and no issues.
Sent via Android

I wanted to prove that SBC causes no harm to the battery. 9 months later my battery is still rocking. 12 hours off the charger and at 86% with SBC. You must be reading some old threads thinking that SBC will do something crazy.

I dont use sbc because of stories people have told about melting batteries.....I might try it if there's a post just about sbc and why its safe that I can read

Here is a post from the guy who created this mod and why he thinks it is safe.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10085717&postcount=127
First and foremost, we can't charge the battery to "max capacity" anyways. Those people aren't looking at the picture correctly. How are we gonna charge it to max capacity if the phone is on? I say it's charging to max capacity because the charging gets it close there, but as long as the phones are on there is no way on earth you can actually do that because the phone uses power while on the charger. That's why its so easy to charge from 0-90% but takes a while to charge from 90-100%. Once you get to 90% the current going into the phone is about 200mA but the phone is using ~100mA and thats if its just idle. Now with this charging, the mA decreases overtime, so the ending mA should be a bunch of +0mA. At that point, the charger itself is powering the phone but the battery is still losing power, so trickle charging begins there to maintain the battery voltage but the power for trickle charging is only +2mA. So charging to max capacity is tough, we can get it close (about 4.18V) but actually getting to 4.2V is pretty tough when the phone is on.

I use sbc kernels exclusively and have not experienced any issues, even when charging overnight. I'm a battery life freak and want to extract every mA I can out of the battery.
Four months using sbc and my batteries are in great condition.

SBC

That's good to hear...never was one to believe that it caused "battery explosion" but i was unaware that it gave that much of a battery boost. Sweet

SBC Rumors are false... SBC FTW!

The "problem" with SBC was two fold:
A) Several random people claimed significant damage occurred and a lot of people didn't see the connection, although the claims were right after the initial public release of SBC
B) A group of people, including some engineers, asked for a "disclaimer message" [something that we even have when rooting] for SBC modified kernels and yet the developer refused for the longest time
Are SBC kernels going to make your battery explode and house burn down? Probably not.
Could they significantly reduce the lifespan of your battery? Possibly. There's engineers that believe it.
Should they come with their own disclaimer like every ROM/Kernel/Root method/Modification etc on XDA? Certainly.

evo 3d charges to 4.35v.
evo 4g charges to 4.2v
same battery technology.
in almost a year of sbc kernels (intentional consistent usage) I haven't killed any batteries be it explosion or shortened life.
your safe

It's not a flaw, it's by design. I'll let you do the research on it, but pretty much every thread about why SBC is either good or bad that includes any technical details will lay out why the phone doesn't trickle charge.
Whether that design is worth the loss of battery life is the debate.

I have used SBC kernels since the very day it was released and I have never had an issue. I leave it charging overnight and I haven't really noticed a drop in battery performance so I don't really see a reason not to use it.

i think i have an ideea with our battery

our sgs think our battery its empty at 3,7v or 3,68.
if we could change the limit for the battery is considered empty, somewhere in the 3.1 to 3 V, thinking how much could keep a battery, the phone started.
if the battery is not empty exaggerated, I believe it can be used without problems.
Sony Ericsson uses batteries to 3.2 somewhere if I remember well.
I dont know how I could do something like that, that's why I posted here this idea.
from here http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries
"Power loss through Protection Circuit
Besides common aging, a Li-ion battery can also fail because of undercharge. This occurs if a Li-ion pack is stored in a discharged condition. Self-discharge gradually lowers the voltage of the already discharged battery and the protection circuit cuts off between 2.20 and 2.90V/cell. Some chargers and battery analyzers (including those from Cadex) provide a wake-up feature, or “boost,” to re-energize and recharge these seemingly dead Li-ion batteries."

sony ericsson use this trick to have longer battery life, anyway we dont use a battery 2 years.
i dont now how to implement this trick.
I have the battery monitor app and in stock XXJVK, at 01% the battery is between 3.4 and 3.5 volts.
Fully charged is 4.18 volts or thereabouts but this falls fairly quickly to 4.0 volts which is where the battery stats need to be accurate to show true percentage and not just jump down to 80%.
Fully charged for me takes about 3 hours but I charge all my batteries (three using a separate charger and not in the phone itself.

Tiamat SBC Kernel

Excuse me for the first post I make here may be stupid but here goes nothing. In the SBC kernels specifically the Tiamat how do you know if the trickle charge is working. Do you need to turn it on or just it just work automatically. Also the HAVS. I seen in another rom there was a controller for it implemented. Is there a such stand alone thing is is this ROM specific? Help and details needed. I've spent an hour searching with no luck.
I just found out the trickle charge will not work if you're using your phone(kicks in at 100%). Its built into the kernel by default. Only way to test is to download battery monitor widget from market, leave it on charge over night, and check the history and you'll notice that it was trickling positive mA's(around 12-15). I've heard the savage zen rom has a havs controller but I've never used it before. In the dev secs there's a thread with some havs scripts you can run for more control etc.

I have installed Battery Monitor widget and took my phone off the charger about 11pm last night. I played on it for almost 2 hours solid and went to sleep and left it off the charger. I got up and spent about 30 minutes on it this morning. So far it has been up 9 hours and 17 minutes and still have 53%. It appears that it is working because it stayed at 100% for most of the first hour. Now to just see if it trickle charges at night.
I selected a SBC kernel because I read on a thread on XDA that it's best to use them if not charging all the time and you only charge overnight. Lot's of speculation on these kernels killing the batteries from what I read but I have yet to see any confirmed reports that this kernel damaged the phone.
I tried to use those undervolting scripts for custom kernels that was featured yesterday and all that happened was a constant boot loop or no boot. I've been told that they made a set for Tiamat kernels specifically here on XDA but haven't been able to locate them. Any truth to this?
Sorry if there is a bit of detail to this post. I just figured I would give a short review of the kernel as any information is always helpful. Thanks to both of you for the help.
Here's an example of trickle charging working overnight. Once my phone hits 100% completely the trickle charging begins and it just pushes 12mA's all night to slowly fill the battery to its maximum. With out sbc kernels your phone will never let you completely fill your battery to it's true 100%.

Dude, he said he built these scripts off of the tiamat kernel. Some phones will accept them and some zips will be rejected causing a boot loop. Good thing he put a reset zip in there also you just have to test them to see what your phone likes.

If it was only one of the 1750mah batterys then you really should've done a bit more research, 3rd party batteries typically only have ~80% of the capacity they are rated at giving you ~1400mah or quite a bit less than the stock battery.

How to increase battery life 200%!

Hi, i stumbled across something.
Normally my fully charged X8 lasts about a day (I charge it every night)
I was at this friends house and forgot my charger, so i borrowed his HTC charger. This resulted in a battery that lasted twice as long! I tried it a few times and there is a real difference between the 2 chargers.

My battery life s*cks. I have to calibrate the battery and do some improvements (like use "Battery Doctor to save battery" app)
I think the charger doesn't make difference because the battery as a limit, and the charger charges the phone to that limit =D xD watch out, don't use chargers with different voltage and amperage, if you use one with more than the stock charger you probably will burn out your battery xD

Sometimes ROM doesn't affect battery life, affecting battery life is your own habit.
As doixanh said (the dev that make GingerDX), reboot phone after listen to music, etc. I wish i could help you.
every one that wants longer battery life, download SuperDim from the market. My battery lasts 2-4 days depending on usage using Floyo .30

Found out the ONE issue I have with this phone

My battery life blows and it's not for a lack of conditioning or calibration. I know how Li-ION batteries need to be calibrated and that they only last for about 300-500 charges. So I'm basically just kinda getting ****ty battery life.

I've tried everything. It's just a bad battery. I only get 4 hours on tiamat CM7 with undervolt by 225 and cpu set to 691-921

Get a replacement? lol
Is that 4 hours with constant usage?
On and off usage (medium use) and I can't goto sprint and get a replacement. I'm stuck with bestbuy's replacement plan and I have to wait for my dad to call them.

Medium use I can easily get 16 to 20 hours.
Definitely a hardware issue
If its just a bad battery why not get another?

I can't just goto a sprint store though. It's under best buy. I mean I can see if a manager friend of mine can help me out.

Well, your issue isn't the Evo itself, it's your personal phone.
I too had a bad battery. Use or no use it lasted for 6 hours max. Said f it! Got extended battery. NOW its a manly man's phone! It's got some girth! Feels like a brick lol. But I'm also a power user. Even so, 17 hours of use on first full charge. Definitely a top mod in my book.

Try an SBC kernel cause battery calibration isn't ur answer. Also its not ur phone its ur kernel and also the governor and oc settings u set on ur phone.
free the dirk
Deck 1.3d. Tiamat 407 SBC. Conservative governor. (Start w 384min and 998max) Play w the values a little. Battery calibration app. V6 (optional). Don't see how it could go wrong. My battery has me in love w my Evo again after almost a year of owning it. Sense is a resource hawg. Until gingersense can figure out how to get the battery life froyo sense had it wont be back on my Evo anytime soon. I lost a t9 dialer going to Aosp...the theme engine makes up for that as mixer looks nice.
No kernel, voltage modification, or ROM is going to change the fact that your battery is bad.
I'm going with what Matty said as you all don't know what I've gone through with this phone. I've gotten all of the mods I was supposed to. I did everything possible I really think it's just a bad battery

Did this not stand out to anyone else?
How on the world do you under volt that much A....
And 2 why would you set your min voltage so freaking high? Use, 245 or 128, I am under clocked to 128 614, which you hold yours constantly above that...
And E, I assume you are a power user. What is am average day like?

Non-SBC kernel.
Tiamat 4.07 with -75mv lower voltage.
Admittedly, I've been using my phone constantly for the past three hours.
Before that, I was at 70%.
Stock battery.
